my problem was not the feed hoses, it was the hose from the drum to the pump that came loose during the filling phase. I only realized there was a problem because I started wondering why my "small" load of laundry was taking so long to fill.
One day I will have a floor drain in my laundry room and never be paranoid again. (except for snakes coming up it)y Posted by: Kindltot at October 26, 2025 02:06 PM (rbvCR) 6

I don't know why a washer line would break if left for a few weeks. Certainly not a steel one. I have rubber ones, and we tend to do a bunch of laundry on a free weekend, and then leave it for a few weeks. No problems.

Miss a 1/2 cup in the lines at the Minnesota fishing camp and you get "the waters not on" "the pump is running" "I hear water" "Shit it's spraying behind the wall" add 1/2 day delay in opening. ChatGPT to the rescue. A light flips on in my dash yesterday. I photograph it, ask ChatGPT what it is. "Your tires are low." It's funny, when I went to the hardware store to buy a tire gauge, the other one is in my mom's car (which turned out not to be necessary anyway because I discovered a few minutes later that the pressure check at those $2.00 for Air machines is free), I asked the guy behind the counter what the difference was between the $2 gauge and the $6 gauge. He laughed. "I don't know; I don't know anything about checking tires!" I didn't feel so bad after that. I felt great putting air in those tires and watching the light go away. ALSO, the $2.00 air itself is also free. You just ask the guy at the counter and he turns it on for you. Posted by: Blonde Morticia at October 26, 2025 02:13 PM (5e+/e) 15

FWP #1 I have an ice dispenser on my refrigerator. I push the lever with my glass and cubes fall in. Very, very slowly at first. Then, when the glass gets almost full, the flow increases dramatically and cubes are falling all over the floor. To be kicked under the refrigerator. 'I don't know how often feed lines rupture. I have stainless steel lines, and I can't imagine that robust water lines such as those fail very often, but the conventional wisdom is to turn off the water when you are away.'
That fixture is nice to have but I have had washers for decades and worked on them but have never had the water lines rupture. Plus, you have to be there to deactivate the water supply. Now a valve that detects a drop in pressure and shuts itself? That would be good to have. Posted by: Dr. Claw at October 26, 2025 02:15 PM (fd80v) 18

I have one of those dryers that have a water feed line to do steam??? drying or something. I think it's a gimmick, I've never used it, but you see it a lot on newer models.
Anyway my wife was trying to dry clothes, it wasn't working, looked in and the dryer had an inch of water in it! So I pumped out the water, capped off the stupid steam line and it's worked fine since. A dryer that needs water. That's the opposite of drying. An undryer. I have one of those, but it has 90° elbows on the top and connects to two copper 1/2" pipes coming directly out of the wall. Unfortunately over the past 20 years or so, water has leaked out of the valve along the horizontal brass turning axis and down the attached steel handle. So much so that the handle has corroded and is no longer strong enough to turn the valve. It's a mere shred of what it used to be. So without choice, I just leave the water on when I leave the house. What could go wrong? The rubber hoses are only 25 years old.

I may have had a clothes washer's water feed libe fail once. I have had a hot water tank fail more often and, most irritating of all, I have had the gaskets in the water mixing device inside one of those accursed single handle shower water valves fail three times (it cannot be adequately drained of water for overwintering, so what water is there may freeze and thereby permanently distort the gaskets -- hilarity ensues). Those three incidents were total fiascoes to correct because the first step is to order the replacement part and then wait for a few days until it arrives. We learned the risks of rubber hoses many years ago. One night at about 2 AM our LOUD smoke alarm started going off. We both stumbled out of bed (minimally clad) and see what looks like smoke in the hallway. Husband starts banging on the smoke alarm with a broom handle to try to get it to stop.
It took us a while in our befuddled state to realize that it wasn't smoke but steam from hot water. The hot water line for the washer--close to the smoke alarm--had broken and hot water was spraying all over the hallway. It was actually beneficial because we shut off the hot water before it caused any real damage. So now we always have stainless steel hoses and shut off the water when we're away. AND we also always forget so we put a Post-it note on the washer: "Water turned off." Posted by: Art Rondelet of Malmsey at October 26, 2025 02:29 PM (FEVMW) 51

Thankfully, I had a builder with a brain. The washroom opens out into the garage. And (this is important), the washroom is one step lower than the first floor of the house, but on the same level as the garage. Soooo, should the lines rupture, the washroom (and it's cheap carpet sitting on padding and cement), and the the garage (cement) will not be a clean-up problem.
So, in summary. I never turn the water off. Even if I'm away for over a week. I, also, added insulation on the hardline coming into the house and any pipes near the exterior walls of the house to help prevent freezing. Posted by: Orson at October 26, 2025 02:39 PM (dIske) 75

I've experienced the joy of "fixing" a longstanding dishwasher issue after the repairman had paid two visits to say nothing needed fixing. I paid a visit and when I spun the dishwasher around and pulled out the hose from the back to attach it to the kitchen sink tap, it was a eureka moment. The college kids using it had no idea of the existences of such dishwashers, and no one had told them, so they were "running" it with no water going in or out.

I asked the guy behind the counter what the difference was between the $2 gauge and the $6 gauge. He laughed. "I don't know; I don't know anything about checking tires!" I didn't feel so bad after that. I felt great putting air in those tires and watching the light go away. ALSO, the $2.00 air itself is also free. You just ask the guy at the counter and he turns it on for you. Posted by: Blonde Morticia Generally, the pressure guages that only go up to about 40-60 psi are somewhat more accurate. Look for a guage that has the reading for your needs at the halfway point of its readout. My motorcycle only needs 28 psi front/rear. So i looked until i found a low pressure guage that only went to 60, from a tractor and farm implement supply house. I built an inflation setup rig that uses an antique pressure regulator that only reads up to 90 psi on an 8" dial. Yes. Yes, I am anal about my tire pressure. Never seen the pictured switch. Gas and water levers usually go with the direction of flow. If the lever is in line with the pipe it is open and if it is cross wise it is closed. They are sometimes refereed to as gates. If you think of it that way you can see the gate as open or closed.

I have stainless steel lines, and I can't imagine that robust water lines such as those fail very often, but the conventional wisdom is to turn off the water when you are away.
Oddly enough, the only time I have had a stainless steel, corded connector burst is after turning the water off (to clear the electric heater, not, fortunately, because I was going away) and then Turn water back on after clearing water heater. Where is that noise coming from? Looks around. Nothing. It sounds like running water. I cant see any. Looks around. Why is water leaking out of the wall? Run into the kitchen the kitchen floor is covered in water. So is the living/dining room floor, which I had literally just finished flooring a few days ago. Turn water back off. Ah well. The slaam, iirc, was a nuke that could low orbit forever being propelled by nuclear propulsion, the when the order came could strike its target.
There were a lot of worries in those days about being hit first and being able to respond. They wanted to have planes loitering in the air as well without coming down. I am not sure they ever tested the B-36 with a nuke they had plans for before missile tech improved to the point to make it all pointless.
