This is a lovely portrait on many levels. The soft background emphasizes the girl. Her flawless skin tones and very feminine posture in that lonely setting speak of solitude, maybe isolation. Her subdued clothing almost blends into the sky and rock. It's based on a French novel from the early 1800s but it could be Penelope looking out to sea waiting for Odysseus to return. It has that classic feel of patience and contemplation as she pauses repairing the net and stares out. The emotional impact of the painting starts small but grows as you continue to look at the image.

Graziella
Jules-Joseph Lefebvre A pretty painting. (Very nice feet) The Metropolitan Museum of Art Jules-Joseph Lefebvre French. 1878. On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 800. Graziella is the title character of a novel by Alphonse de Lamartine that recounts the tragic affair between a young French man and the beautiful granddaughter of a Neapolitan fisherman. --- Alphonse Marie Louis de Prat de Lamartine, French, 21 October 1790 – 28 February 1869)[2] was a French author, poet, and statesman. Initially a moderate royalist, he became one of the leading critics of the July Monarchy of Louis-Philippe, aligning more with the Republican Left and Social Catholicism. Lamartine was a leading figure in the 1848 French Revolution and was instrumental in the foundation of the Second Republic along with the preservation of the tricolor as the flag of France. During the revolutionary year of 1848 he served as Foreign Minister and frequently worked to ease tensions between the government and the working class. He was a candidate in the 1848 French presidential election but lost to Louis Napoleon Bonaparte. After the election, he retired from political life. (Wikipedia)

LizLem, I think Louis XVI would have had to have been a much sterner monarch to bring that one home. At that point he was fighting the intellectuals who were trying to grab positions for themselves, the street which was under employed and in poverty, and dealing with the problem that the kingdom was broke and wanted more tax revenue.
He would have needed some hard-hitting supporters to back him up to make that change. Posted by: Kindltot at October 23, 2025 10:46 AM (rbvCR) 208

It's also important to note that he's Cenk Uygher's nephew. And he lives in a mansion in LA while telling everyone to be communist. Forty-five cents per dozen. They had good reason to complain. They had to work an hour to buy a dozen eggs. That would be like a dozen eggs costing $20 today. The average hourly wage for production workers in 1935 was approximately $0.54. This figure represents the average for manufacturing production workers, and other sources note that the average wage for common labor started at around $0.43 per hour in 1930 Posted by: Archimedes at October 23, 2025 10:53 AM (Riz8t) Posted by: Commissar of plenty and festive little hats at October 23, 2025 10:53 AM (MPQZ2) 227

Forty-five cents per dozen. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, seeing dreamlike horrors with Mario Bava at October 23, 2025 10:51 AM (GBKbO) Median HH income in 1935 was around $1500 then. So you could buy 3333 dozen eggs with a median income. Today median income is $83k and price of eggs is around $1.50 today (govt numbers). Which means you can buy 55,333 dozen eggs with a median income. Even if eggs were $10 they would still be cheaper today relative to income. But they killed the dollar man!!!!
