Her subdued clothing almost blends into the sky and rock. It's based on a French novel from the early 1800s but it could be Penelope looking out to sea waiting for Odysseus to return. It has that classic feel of patience and contemplation as she pauses repairing the net and stares out. The emotional impact of the painting starts small but grows as you continue to look at the image.

Holy shit I was right. I've been there and saw vesuvius across the bay of naples. My grandfather used to fish there, so years after he died I just happened to be in the area and decided to see the area as he saw it. I'll never forget that view of vesuvius. It was kind of eerie really.

Median HH income in 1935 was around $1500 then. So you could buy 3333 dozen eggs with a median income.

Today median income is $83k and price of eggs is around $1.50 today (govt numbers). Which means you can buy 55,333 dozen eggs with a median income. Even if eggs were $10 they would still be cheaper today relative to income.
