  • Four words to drive a stake into the heart of Sam Altman: Artificial intelligence is mid. (Anil Dash)

    Put less succinctly:
Technologies like LLMs have utility, but the absurd way they've been over-hyped, the fact they're being forced on everyone, and the insistence on ignoring the many valid critiques about them make it very difficult to focus on legitimate uses where they might add value.
But who exactly feels that way?

Turns out, almost everyone in the industry:
What's amazing is the reality that virtually 100% of tech experts I talk to in the industry feel this way, yet nobody outside of that cohort will mention this reality.
    Can't risk bursting that don't-ever-call-it-a-bubble.

27 Anyway! (As our former pretend "president" used to say . . .) I'm up, awake (basically), sipping some coffee, with the Killer Kittenz From Outer Space with me. Stirling is sprawled on the floor near my feet, and Dagny is pacing like she's waiting for a bus.

Stirling caught, but didn't manage to kill, a tiny gecko that got into the apartment last night. He'd been clearly hunting something, and then suddenly there it was on the carpet, trying to get away while he patted at it. Linda sprung into action, tossed him into the bathroom, then got a plastic tub and scooped the gecko into it so she could release the creature outdoors. It baffled Stirling -- at least until I gave him some kitty treats in compensation for losing his quarry.

I'm gonna have to get serious about doing that soon. The older (2020) laptop is Win10, and the last time I fired it up, MS wanted to update it to 11. I turned them down -- but who knows whether they will sneak it past me in the future.

I use the Win laptops very little, though. The Mac on the desktop and the MacBook Air work just fine for me. Changing one of the others to Linux will give me something to play with.

32 I had to stop my brother from stomping on a lizard one night years ago. Not because I'm a big lizard fan but because the lizard was in the house and I didn't feel like cleaning up lizard guts out of the carpet.

So I said: "No, don't kill it!" while he looked at me like I was some kinda PETA hippy.

And then I grabbed two red Solo cups and corralled the little green guy into one and covered it by sliding the other in on top. Then I took it outside to lizard freedom.

Cockroaches and other bugs are one thing, but lizards are a lot more messy for cleanup.

Change "typo" to "transcription error"?

A Tiny Typo May Explain a Centuries-Old Mystery About Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’ and ‘Troilus and Criseyde’

[T]he exact wording of the sermon itself—copied by a scribe in an unsteady calligraphy—has been the subject of debate since at least the late 1500s.

“Lots of very smart people have torn their hair out over the spelling, punctuation, literal translation, meaning and context of a few lines of text”....

... In the new study, Falk and Wade suggest the scribe incorrectly transcribed two key words....

Yes . . . and since Stirling for some reason doesn't usually eat all of what he kills, there would have been some small mess to clean up. Linda keeps saying he's an "immoral" cat because of that -- her other cats all ate their kills. I keep telling her he's *amoral,* not immoral. Cats have no moral code. (Or maybe it's "unmoral"?)

35 I'm starting a new job in a few hours.
I'm not sure yet if I'll be able to work from home or in the office. Hoping at home because I hate traffic.

I'm updating and redesigning a website I did for this company years ago that really needs it.

To Pixy's great disappointment, I'm going with WordPress, probably. But it's the easiest way to make a site that will work with all screen formats (PC, Tablet, Phone) and it's a breeze to update as needed once everything is up and running.

I don't know of any WordPress replacements that are ready to go on most server hosting, either.

It'll work for now unless I find something better.

Wish me luck on this new chapter in my life.

My sister-in-law's last cat always like to bring her dead birds as presents, which got left on the floor with a broken neck.

57 Yesterday, I was doing some google searches to find out how to remove old kernels in LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) as it's slightly different than the standard Linux Mint.

The first result was Google's AI telling me explicitly how to list out and manage those kernels in the Update Manager. The problem is that this is one of the critical differences between Linux Mint, and LMDE. In LMDE you don't have access to manage installed kernels through the Update Manager. (And yes, I verified this in the current installation.)

So the LLM was wrong. Again.

It happened with another thing I was searching for as well. For three tech searches today in regards to working with LMDE, two of the three AI results at the top of Google's search results were just flat out incorrect in important details.

This is why I normally ignore the AI results.

63 Confirming bitlocker status on all your drives:

Run your command prompt (cmd.exe) as Adminstrator (this might require right clicking on the icon for it and selecting "Run as Administrator")

The command to list out the status of all drives:

manage-bde -status

For each drive, you want to see:
Conversion Status: Fully Decrypted
Protection Status: Protection Off
Lock Status: Off

To decrypt a drive (let's use a data drive, D: as an example)
manage-bde -off d:

Three options:
- Fixed Data Drives
- Operating System Drives
- Removable Data Drives

- Fixed Data Drives
- Deny write access to fixed drives not protected by BitLocker

SET THIS TO: Disabled

Or malicious actors who infect a website with a javascript payload that tries to do mining in the background? The two might interract in a very negative way, with users not aware until their machine halts and catches fire (HCF).

I think so too.
Now it's just deciding on which pagebuilder and theme to use and then it's off to the races remaking the old site to start.

87 I must've skipped right over BitLocker when I installed Windows on here, because I'm not even seeing a BitLocker section in Control Panel.

Even typing in BitLocker takes me nowhere.

88 I've only overheard a tiny bit of people out in the wild commenting on this no kings bullshit.

It's universally scorn and mockery, regardless of who is saying it. Dude bros. Hipsters. College kids. No one takes this crap seriously.

It's just a bunch of boomers fucking up traffic, really.

90 Morning, Horde...How goes it?

I checked my work email this morning after being away for a few days.

I had 34 unread messages, not one of which was particularly important....Just a meeting invite that I needed to accept. That's it.

93 Tom's Hardware explains how to check BitLocker in a guide:

https://tinyurl.com/56c6t75x

Apparently, I don't have to worry about it because I installed Windows 11 Home on this PC.

So if you're just using home, no worries.

But if you're on a laptop with Win11, check it out and copy your BitLocker key(s) as I think most OEM's put BitLocker encyption on laptops automatically for security reasons.

94 I had 34 unread messages, not one of which was particularly important....Just a meeting invite that I needed to accept. That's it.

My approach to work email when I get back from vacation is this.

1. Check the subject lines of all of them. See if anything needs my attention.

2. Select all of the others. Mark as read and then delete.

If it's important, the sender can reach out to me.

I'm old enough to remember the old DIN connectors.
Those snazzy new PS/2 connections were a lot easier.
I've probably still got one of those keyboards in the attic, but I'm not sure.

96 It's nice weather and people are bored. They want to get outside and do something and they don't have the good fortune of being able to attend a Southeastern Conference football game. So they flatten one of their many Amazon boxes, get out the big old chisel tipped Sharpie marker and make a lame sign.
Then put on the threadbare Che t-shirt and go to the nearest gathering of other people trying in vain to feel significant.
Yawn.

Should be on the road in about two hours for the final stretch of the return to Summerville from the TxMoMe.

As always, an amazing time, hosted by a wonderful lady.
And the efforts of an untold number of fellow Horde members.

Time to go home though....we miss the kitties.

Reports that the Gaza ceasefire collapsed are greatly exaggerated.

There's lots of pressure (from the US and Arab states) to keep the truce intact despite breaches.

Israel and Hamas also don't want to resume full-scale fighting anytime soon.

So don't be surprised to see brief eruptions of military action that end quickly.

With that said, the situation in Gaza will remain tense for some time.

But there's one very noticeable change from the past: Such eruptions no longer involve large Hamas rocket barrages. Hamas no longer has the ability to do it.
