Daily Tech News 19 October 2025

Top Story

  • Solar car maker Aptera is about to go public and I'm worried. (Elektrek)

Also, prescient. This article was posted ten days ago.

Aptera listed on NASDAQ last week with a share price around $20.

Three days later it's trading below $6.

Aptera has spent 19 years and an untold amount of money - something like $150 million - trying to build what has been unkindly but accurately described as an electric tricycle, and all it has to show for its efforts is a handful of shiny prototypes.

Though given how similar the protypes have all appeared over the years it's not unimaginable that they just painted a solar cell pattern over the original diesel/electric model and called it a day.

Production was originally scheduled to start in 2008.

Tech News

  • Scaling Kubernetes to a million nodes. (GitHub)

    Why?

As John F. Kennedy famously said of the Apollo Program: We choose to go the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because we thought they would be easy.

I suspect that applies equally to the engineers at Aptera. Maybe more than equally.

  • People apparently don't want ultra-slim phones. (Mac Rumours)

Apple has reportedly cut production of the iPhone Air - at the same time it has boosted production of other models - and Samsung has cancelled the follow up to its competing S25 Edge.

I wouldn't mind a slimmer phone, but it's far down the list of problems with current models, most of which were self-inflicted by the companies making them.

  • Presenters prevented a tragedy at the Wikipedia conference taking place in New York when they tackled an armed pedophile who threatened to kill himself. (NBC News)

I fully understand. The cleaning crews in New York conference spaces are all union and those overtime rates will blow your budget into another dimension.

  • Migrating from Amazon to Hetzner Cloud. (Digital Society)

And getting nearly three times as much (virtual) hardware for a quarter the price.

Wait, didn't an entire Hetzner datacenter burn to the ground not so long ago?

    No, that was OVH.

    Oh. Carry on then.

  • A big small PC from Minisforum. (Liliputing)

It measures about 9" x 9" x 4", which is big for a small PC but small for a big PC, and offers four (SODIMM) memory slots, four M.2 slots, and three PCIe slots, and a Core Ultra 9 285HX (8 performance cores and 16 efficiency cores). Plus two USB4v2 ports (80Gbps) and a USB4 port (40Gbps), two 25Gb Ethernet ports, one 10Gb Ethernet port, one 2.5Gb Ethernet port, one HDMI port, and the usual bunch of USB3 ports.

Given the size and power constraints (it has a 350W power supply) you're not going to fit a high-end graphics card in it, but a low-profile Nvidia 5060 or an Intel Arc Pro B50 should work fine.

  • Anbernic is preparing to launch the RG DS, a dual-screen gaming device selling for less than $100. (Notebook Check)

It's designed to emulate the Nintendo DS and 3DS. It can play games made for older consoles but it's clearly aimed at those two since it looks exactly like them.

4 Gotta get a move on. Quote of the day/week/month:

@GadSaad

My daughter's class is going on a school trip to NYC. Many of the parents are incredibly upset that the school would visit the United States where there is a "daily genocide of women, trans people, and people of color." The parents are not upset at what is happening in Canada or that @ZohranKMamdani is going to become mayor of NYC. They are terrified for their children's safety because of @realDonaldTrump.

I have spent my entire academic career studying human behavior and human decision making, and yet I'm astounded by this level of suicidal stupidity.

10 @5/Biden's Dog: GoFundMe has created nonprofit pages for more than 1 million charities using public data.

And hasn't informed the charities, so they're taking in funds in other people's names, without informing them.

This reeks of massive fraud. One is left to wonder if the grifters that were funded by USAID are getting desperate.

33 The iPhone Air’s biggest problem is a $999 price tag for a phone with lesser specs than the base iPhone 17 at $799, which is selling really well.

The Air sold out in China but they love shiny new status symbols there.

I still think Apple is going to make a foldable out of two Airs basically. Will probably see that in the next few years.

Johnny Von Neumann was the classic “absent minded professor” in a lot of ways. A brilliant mathematician and physicist. He was such a brainiac that when he was on his deathbed they had military guys posted at his bedside lest he mumble top secret info in his delirium.

Anyway in better times it was well known he was so busy that he did not spend as much time with his family as he might have. His wife told a story that at one time she was in bed sick, and asked him for a glass of water.

After about 5 or 10 minutes he returned. “Where do we keep the glasses?” She said they had lived at that house for 17 years.

Cellphones use radio waves, so I assume for the same reason you can pick up that iffy radio station, that’s far away for you, much better at night than during the day.

Solar radiation interference?

48 People do t do scooters here.
Instead they love golf carts.

Had to wait behind a convoy of three of them yesterday driving through the neighborhood to go to a nearby neighborhood apparently to watch football at somebody’s house because they were loaded with coolers and containers.

It’s those bigger golf carts with knobby tires and turn signals for road use.
They are all the rage now among people who don’t want to walk through a neighborhood or ride a bike.

51 Yes, AM radio waves have a phenomenon called “atmospheric skip”. FM radio frequencies are much higher and don’t generally exhibit this characteristic at all. They are “line of sight”.

That’s why I wondered about cell phone frequencies. Usually it will become usable around dusk, and then till about 0730 or so. Sometimes able to get through during the day but very briefly. The time frame narrows by spring, only being usable starting very late at night, meaning one has to be a night owl to log on.

53 'I'm 89 and I saw my homeland rebuilt before - but now I don't believe Gaza has a future'

As near as I can tell they’ve never believed Gaza had a future because they’ve spent several decades consumed by the past and the future represented nothing but a chance for revenge.

Stop starting wars you can’t win and build a community dedicated to providing a better future for the children and you might get somewhere.

As it stands they are nothing but ignoble savages constantly holding pity parties in between military campaigns.

***
I understood the night reception phenomenon was because of "skip distance." A layer of the atmosphere, I've forgotten the name, comes down closer to the surface of the Earth at night. So the angle changes at which the radio waves hit it and reflect; it becomes less acute, so the distance between transmitter and receivers can become greater. In '72, I recall listening on an ordinary AM radio at night and picking up stations in Ohio and Kansas City, hearing the Eagles' "Take It Easy" a week before my local Top 40 station began playing it.

73 What I noticed about Young Frankenstein last night, and I've noticed before, is that it is not a rapid-fire joke machine of a movie. The pace is measured; it's not like Airplane! Mel Brooks was clearly trying to replicate the pacing of the 1931-1945 Universal horror films he was doing an affectionate parody of. The Irish started getting it together in the late 90s.
They’ve done pretty well for themselves as a base for American tech companies who needed access to the EU market. Low corporate tax rates and a drive to improve worked out for them.

Now they’re going down the same path as the UK with massive immigration and leftist policies that are slowly strangling everything.

They’ll be screwed if the EU keeps trying to manhandle every American company with rules and regulations, because those companies might decide it’s no longer worth it and pull out completely.

86 “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From liberty to abundance; From abundance to selfishness; From selfishness to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage.”

104 Winnie was wrong on that, I think. Sort of. Well, totally.

Curiously the early 20th century Army technical manuals described Democracy in not very glowing terms. “Results in license, agitation, discontent. Mobocracy. Attitude towards property is communistic”.

After the 2nd war to end all wars they described this anodyne bullshit. They would have PSAs on the radio claiming “In a Democracy, a dictator can’t take over. The people won’t allow it”. This a real howler, because democracies are exactly how dictators generally take over, it’s almost axiomatic.

The belief is that public and private virtue are necessary to uphold the Constitution, which is designed to be a government of laws, not of men, and requires a virtuous citizenry to succeed.

So maybe we've been lucky to make it to 250 years
