Nearing the end of my time in Sussex for this trip. Dealing with yard work -- removing marsh grasses and small shrubs and trees from our garden beds -- and cleaning up stuff that was outdoors ahead of bringing it inside. The cooler, but sunny weather is a big plus for doing this.

My "shut 'er down" trip for this place is not yet on the calendar, but will occur before Thanksgiving, at the latest.

She was in The Collector w/ Terence Stamp (later Gen. Zod), and did a TV series version of The King and I in the early '70s. She was roughly a contemporary of Diana Rigg, whom she somewhat resembled. I wonder if she was ever considered to play Emma Peel on The Avengers.

Though they've been in America since 1990, Siberians are not as well known as Maine Coons and Persians are. I usually qualify the breed name by saying "Siberian cat" so the listener doesn't think I have a husky-type dog.

Did you catch his name? A lot of breeders and owners go with the tradition of giving them Russian names, a la my "Tatiana" and "Chekov." I broke with that tradition by giving Dagny a Norwegian name. But I tucked "Sophia" in there, after her mother.

Basically an office assistant animated character in Microsoft Word 97. (I think I still have an installation CD for that around here somewhere...)

There were other office assistants too. I didn't mind the cat.

Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at October 18, 2025 06:10 AM (O7YUW)

50 The problem with the original Clippy (and other office assistants) is that they didn't wait to be called on by you clicking on them and asking for help, the software would throw them in your face when you started a task and it tried to guess what you were going to do. "It looks like you're writing a letter, would you like some help with that?"

Leading to the phrase that lasts to this day each and every time Microsoft tries to push stuff on us in the middle of us doing our actual work:

NO. STOP "HELPING" ME, MICROSOFT!

55 Clippy wasn’t a terrible idea, MS just tried to be too cute with the animated characters (an anamorphic paper clip?) and far too intrusive when it showed up to help.

Thankfully it only really did a lot in Word.

There was also a dog character you could choose I think.

Now they do all of that with helpful tips in some apps that show up when you first open the app, until you turn it off out of annoyance.

58 Oh, and Microsoft interrupting us while we're trying to get our actual work done (with advertisements, with popups demanding that we do something with respect to the operating system, etc...) is the problem I want to avoid, and why I installed Linux Mint on my laptop I use for taking notes in meetings.

Linux Mint has performed flawlessly. It loads quickly, lets me log into a local account, and then steps out of my way and lets me load LibreOffice Writer and get to work. It doesn't bug or harass me, it just works quietly in the background like a good operating system should. When I update it, it updates efficiently and quickly.

Microsoft has forgotten this. It interrupts. It pesters. It takes liberties with your personal data that it shouldn't. It takes forever to install updates. When it updates, it often screws up basic things (like sound or graphics) that causes further problems for you until they unscrew themselves a couple of weeks later. It's obvious that they're not doing testing or quality assurance prior to release. End-users are abused by them by standing in for QA.

Windows peaked with Windows 7. Everything after that was a rolling dumpster fire.

My Win11 box is currently pestering me to update to version 25H2 for all the great new features, which I looked at, and was not very impressed.

I just know if I click on Restart to Update it’s going to take about ten or fifteen minutes and then when it comes back on it’s going to try to convince me to use OneDrive and won’t let me just say No, and will remind me in three days and then when I tel, it No again I will still get the same message again in a few weeks telling me to I need to complete my Windows setup because gosh darnit Windows isn’t complete until you’re backing up everything to OneDrive and have CoPilot running in the background the entire time.

For a bunch of libs out of Seattle, MS sure doesn’t believe that No means No.

76 @69/Skip: "I forgot there was a government shutdown"

That's the thing with there being so many "non-essential" government employees.

At times like this, it begs the question: If they're non-essential, and citizen's lives aren't impacted by a shutdown, do we really need them?

To be fair to them, they may have been essential at one point, but once the problem they were hired to address is solved, they may just be kept on because it's so difficult to fire government workers. They become the sand in the gears that really needs to be blown out when the machine is stopped...

And that's what Trump is doing right now.

85 @72/AltonJackson: "I'm using Win7 right now."

Kudos to you for being able to perform the IT-jujitsu necessary to keep Windows 7 from the forced upgrade to Windows 8 (back when that trickery was going on.) I did the same, and also have a Windows 7 box that still works perfectly fine.

It's a time capsule at this point, with specific software installed that works perfectly at what it's supposed to do. Upgrades would likely break things badly, and I have neither the time, nor the inclination to put myself through that particular flavour of hell.

That or they just hoping they remember who had their backs once they eventually get amnesty through and they can get citizenship and vote.

The left is tired of their people across the West who just won’t vote correctly.

So it’s time to replace the people.

Seems to be the entire game plan from here to Germany.

92 @89/FenelonSpoke:

G'morning, and please also relay a greeting from me to FenSpouse along with the following?

For the route I'm currently assigned to, the kids have mostly calmed down. It's not my regular assigned route you see, but they shifted me to it a few weeks ago, because they had a need and I answered the call.

I had something cool happen yesterday afternoon. A student, getting off the bus, asked me if their regular driver would be back on Monday. I said that no, I had it confirmed that I would be on this route next week. I was expecting a resigned nod. Instead I got a big smile and a "Oh thank god!"

*blink* Apparently the kids on this route have warmed to me and like me... A lot. I must be doing something right.

94 No Kings No Celebs No Pop Stars No Semi-Socialist Administrators

No king(s) has had any effect on America or Americans for about 230. But you know who effect the lives of everyday Americans? The Celeb that gets the liberal white woman to divorce her hard working husband or support million of illegals stealing Medicaid. The Pop Star that promotes homosexuality and trans to millions of pre-teens and teens that see reels and tiktoks of 1 out of 1 MILLION that the money and support to live a lifestyle that ends in disease, suffering, and many time death.
And finally the FauxChis and Dr Scarf and Lois Learner types of America that will the minute they get the chance put the thumb on the scale of life to control your thoughts, you life, and your livelihoods.

I hope it rains on the No Kings Bitches.

105 I encountered those two arrested for Antifa terrorism at a shooting range in Houston several years ago, and told people I had met an antifa sniper team. The Tranny was the shooter, and a very skilled (1 MOA) shot, the spotter with the beard made the same wind calls I would have made. They were surprised I talked to them. I am surprised that they didn't kill anyone in that attack. I took them as seriously as I would have taken a Soviet era sniper team. I now understand that the police officer who was shot in the neck surprised the two while they were on foot, not in sniper firing positions, and that the Tranny made an offhand shot on him. Very few people survive being shot in the neck.

——

Read the story of Yuri Nosenko sometime. He was a high level Soviet defector in 1963. A previous defector warned the CIA that there would be a defector who was really a double agent. Nosenko was held in “solitary” for 1277 days, and they tried pretty much all the dirty tricks trying to get him to break. They still argue whether he was legitimate defector or not

You guys using WIndows 7, what browser are you using? Most browsers won't even update with Windows 8.1 that I've been using for many years. Banking is not possible with outdated browser versions. Many medical sites won't display properly either with outdated browsers. AOS will probably work with Windows 3.0 with Firefox 1.2 as well, but most sites will not.

132 @127/thatcrazyjerseyguy:

On my Windows 7 box, I've got VirtualBox Version 6.1.44 installed. It might be the last version that was supported for installation on Windows 7, but I see from the "older releases" that I could try updating to 6.1.50. Version 7 of Virtualbox onward doesn't support Windows 7 (ironic, that.)

Anyhow, inside of a VirtualBox, I have the latest version of Linux Mint installed, and that's how I'm browsing the net, doing email, and doing my "outside world" stuff. I have a shared folder between the Linux Mint guest virtual box, and the Windows 7 Host so I can access whatever I've downloaded while I'm in Windows 7 and/or push files to the shared folder if I want to send something out.

As for a browser, inside the Linux Mint VirtualBox, I'm using Firefox 143.0.4 (Linux Mint specific sub-revision mint-001 - 1.0).

At some point I'm going to hit a version of the Linux Kernel that no longer supports this old version of VirtualBox, and then I'll need to examine what to do next, either move this entire machine to a completely air-gapped "archive" status where I only access it to play old games I have installed on it, or maybe dual boot Linux Mint and Windows 7.
