After spending more than 1/2 hour today with my head stuffed in an MRI machine this rings true. They called me when they made the appointment to ask about metal in my body. They called me 2 days ago to ask the same thing and they made me fill out a form before the exam asking me the same thing. Then the tech, very cute by the way, asked me again. She even asked if I've ever had metal in my eyes. Wut? MRI trivia:
The superconducting magnet in a working MRI is never off, even when there’s no patient being imaged. There’s a special procedure for powering down the magnet in a controlled fashion. It’s spectacularly bad if it powers down (called a “quench” ![]() Despite whatever is said on House, for at least a couple of decades orthopedic implants have been made of titanium, so not attracted to the magnet. Can’t specifically say about the oldest in that range, but over the last decade or so virtually all orthopedic implants are MRI safe (although will degrade image quality) Posted by: Steeldoc at October 16, 2025 07:54 PM (B/IJT) 56

I've been watching House, M.D. They're big on MRI mishaps. Specifically, when people with steel pins or hips go into the MRI room, the metal in their bodies gets torn out by the magnets or heats up and starts spitting fire.
And have them placed in a ridiculously non-secure manner so basically any swinging díck can walk right into the MRI room with ease. Like, Final Destination levels of stupid. The hazards posed are why hospitals and imaging centers have only one way in and out and you have to go through an antechamber to get there. Cuomo and Sliwa both braced madmani that he gave the finger to the statue of Columbus. The question was about parades. Cuomo and Sliwa said they'd march in all of them. Madmani deflected. Then Sliwa asked about the Columbus day parade and he deflected again. nobody asked about the salute to Israel parade.

I just had Grok run through the basic details about eddy currents in non-ferrous implants. "Approved" implants generally aren't a problem -- conductivity of titanium is not as high as copper and silver and gold, for instance. Main parameter is temp rise, which should be known or estimated and kept under 2C. The biggest problem is imaging artifacts caused by the eddy currents reaction field. It's larger implants and those with loop geometries that can be a problem. How much dB/dt there is influences that, and they might have to limit that depending. Grok says there are all sorts of protocols about this, as you'd expect. IOW, the techs are supposed to know this shit. I had manual windows in all my cars for years, until I bought the '89 Olds Cutlass coupe in late '91. Since then, all power windows (even the '84 and '86 Mercedes), and I wouldn't want to do without them. It's great on a hot day to run all the windows down, drive for a minute or two, blowing the hot air out. Then you start the A/C and run the windows up. Hard to lean over and crank the passenger window up manually with a console in the way, and the back windows would be impossible.

Never got the whole Tom Cruise height thing.
He's never made any claim to being tall and he's cast films and appeared with dudes that are taller than him and dates tall women. So he seems quite secure in his height, whatever it it is. Posted by: Thomas Bender at October 16, 2025 09:57 PM (XV/Pl) 272

Start a car company and only make vehicles based on five models: a late-70s 2-door Olds Cutlass, ------ In the garage. '78 Olds Cutlass Calais. It awaits the installation of the 403 sitting on an engine stand. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at October 16, 2025 09:37 PM (XeU6L) ------------------- I had the very same, except mine had a 350 Rocket that a friend and I rebuilt (OK, I mostly 'helped', he was the one who knew what he was doing). It had some rust on the fenders but it ran like a raped ape. I really am getting old - I just had the urge to say, "They don't make 'em like that anymore." But, it's true. They don't. at one point the US decided to try to frack for natural gas using a smallish nuke. Being the US, they decided to leave a cow at ground zero. It didn't get fried or dead, but it sure got levitated for a second

Boy we've got a s#!† ton of MR experts in the moronosphere! Though I probably have seniority: I worked for the inventor, had my first publication in 1983 and my PhD in 1991. Nowadays I spend a lot more time on the patient side (wrist, knee, brain, heart, prostate, ...)
Above commenters are right that the most serious concern is with ferrous metal, non-ferrous metal can heat up from eddy currents, and most ortho implants (mine are 26 years old) are titanium and MRI-compatible. Tomorrow I'll tell the rat story. Posted by: Otto Zilch at October 16, 2025 10:33 PM (Ws2ua) 277
