Today In History Baby Jessica rescued from a well as the world watches On October 16, 1987, in an event that had viewers around the world glued to their televisions, 18-month-old Jessica McClure is rescued after being trapped for 58 hours in an abandoned water well in Midland, Texas. The drama unfolded on the morning of October 14, 1987, when McClure fell through the 8-inch-wide opening of an abandoned well while playing with other children in the backyard of her aunt’s home day-care center. After dropping about 22 feet into the well, the little girl became stuck. Over the next two-and-a-half days, crews of rescue workers, mining experts and local volunteers labored around the clock to drill a shaft parallel to the one in which McClure was trapped. They then tunneled horizontally through dense rock to connect the two shafts. A microphone was lowered into the well to keep tabs on the toddler, who could be heard crying, humming and singing throughout the ordeal. On the night of October 16, a bandaged and dirt-covered but alert Baby Jessica, as she became widely known, was safely pulled out of the well by paramedics. By that time, scores of journalists had descended on Midland, a West Texas oil city, and the rescue was carried out on live television before a massive audience. The Allman Brothers song pre-dates Baby Jessica ![]() On October 16, 1958, Chevrolet begins to sell a car-truck hybrid that it calls the El Camino. Inspired by the Ford Ranchero, which had already been on the market for two years, the El Camino was a combination sedan-pickup truck built on the Impala body, with the same “cat’s eye” taillights and dramatic rear fins. It was, ads trilled, “the most beautiful thing that ever shouldered a load!” “It rides and handles like a convertible,” Chevy said, “yet hauls and hustles like the workingest thing on wheels.” Ford’s Ranchero was the first “car-truck” sold in the United States, but it was not a new idea. Since the 1930s, Australian farmers had been driving what they called “utes”—short for “coupé utility”—all around the outback. Legend has it that a farmer’s wife from rural Victoria had written a letter to Ford Australia, asking the company to build a car that could carry her to church on Sundays and her husband’s pigs to market on Mondays. In response, Ford engineer Lewis Brandt designed a low-slung sedan-based vehicle that was a ritzy passenger car in the front, with wind-up windows and comfortable seats and a rough-and-tumble pickup in back. The ute was a huge hit; eventually, virtually every company that sold cars Down Under made its own version. In the United States, however, ute-type vehicles were slower to catch on. Though the Ranchero was a steady seller, the first incarnation of the El Camino was not and Chevy discontinued it after just two years. In 1964, the company introduced a new version, this one built on the brawnier Chevelle platform. In 1968, the more powerful SS engine made the El Camino into one of the iconic muscle cars of the late 1960s and 1970s.The Black Keys - From their album "El Camino" Nine months after the execution of her husband, the former King Louis XVI of France, Marie Antoinette follows him to the guillotine on October 16, 1793. The daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Francis I, she married Louis in 1770 to strengthen the French-Austrian alliance. At a time of economic turmoil in France, she lived extravagantly and encouraged her husband to resist reform of the monarchy. The increasing revolutionary uproar convinced the king and queen to attempt an escape to Austria in 1791, but they were captured by revolutionary forces and carried back to Paris. In 1792, the French monarchy was abolished, and Louis and Marie-Antoinette were condemned for treason.French Revolution according to Rush ("The guillotine will claim her bloody prize!") Willowed: I had manual windows in all my cars for years, until I bought the '89 Olds Cutlass coupe in late '91. Since then, all power windows (even the '84 and '86 Mercedes), and I wouldn't want to do without them. It's great on a hot day to run all the windows down, drive for a minute or two, blowing the hot air out. Then you start the A/C and run the windows up.
Hard to lean over and crank the passenger window up manually with a console in the way, and the back windows would be impossible. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at October 16, 2025 09:55 PM (omVj0) 9

I often say, I was a KISS fan. then I turned 13.
But, in all honesty, they (especially Ace) introduced me to rock music. Despite the primitive recordings, their first to albums, KISS, and Hotter than Hell had a raw energy, and a darkness that captivated me and led to so much other music, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden. Even at 29, I still love metal music. I am listening to Tryptykon right now. the outro of Black Diamond on their first album is wonderfully creepy. I saw an actual Ford Ranchero parked on an uptown shopping avenue the other evening. It was not in perfect condition; in fact it looked as if it had been ridden hard and put up wet. But the very sight of one was startling -- the sheer length of it, especially the hood. It was like the flight deck of an aircraft carrier.
The moment I saw it I thought, "El Camino!" Showing that the Chevy version is more ingrained in car culture, I guess. As I got closer I saw four letters on the hood instead of the Chevy bowtie emblem, and knew it was the Ranchero. 1958 . . . the second car my father had that I recall was a '58 Chevy Impala, the first year of that model. Earlier he'd had a '47 Cadillac fastback coupe, which I loved and wished I could drive. No A/C even in Caddies in those days. The Impala did not have it either. So Dad had an aftermarket unit put in under the dash, and I guess the compressor and other gear fitted under the hood. A handsome, soft-riding car -- though its red paint faded to a suede look in only a year or two.

He rarely drove over 45 mph, so lots of horsepower probably didn't matter much to him. Chevy offered multiple engine choices in those days. On the other hand, he usually bought an example of the outgoing model year, still new, as the new year's models were coming in -- a '58 as the '59s were showing up, e.g. -- so I doubt if he special-ordered his cars. If someone doesn't like their music that's fine. De gustibus and all that. But most don't actually know their music because it rarely if ever got played on the radio. The Dead was a live band and they didn't care at all about fitting into radio format. But if you liked their music their live shows were like a Meet Up every show. It was the music plus seeing like minded people who had their own place every show. So you got dancing Dead Head flower children, lawyers, truck drivers and everyone in-between having a party every show. And the tapes. Posted by: fourseasons at October 16, 2025 11:44 PM (3ek7K) Aye. One of my former classmates from nursing skool told me she should have been a grandmother first. True! Being retired and more laid back we deal with anything. In fact, when they were 4 and 2yrs, what we refer to as the Chimp Years with our sons, we'd look at each other and laugh before we broke a brawl up. Our first granddaughter was the first girl born in my family since I was. A carbon copy of me. The world should worry, we just laugh. She's the twin of our son, who looked more like me, and looks a lot like my father. His DNA is shining through with her. She even laughs like me! However she's much smarter and is going to be gorgeous. I hope I am around in about 10yrs when our son is fighting off boys. I will leave a letter for her and her sister to wait for the right guy and not settle. I did not settle and waited. There parents were HS sweethearts vs meeting in college. I'm already telling her she has to wait til after college. She's 4yrs old. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at October 16, 2025 11:52 PM (6PCLE) 243

During this so-called "emergency" situation, police stood around for 40 minutes, armed themselves with rifles and a ballistic shield, went into Trevor Case's home without a warrant, and shot him. Gun Owners of America@GunOwners FYI @TheJusticeDept supports the warrantless home invasion of gun owner Trevor Case. DOJ says federal agents (like@ATFHQ) "make warrantless entries into residences" & need to "prosecute cases" where they "encounter evidence of a crime" without a warrant https://tinyurl.com/nvu6wv5u Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at October 17, 2025 12:00 AM (XH6Dk) Posted by: JQ at October 17, 2025 12:00 AM (rdVOm) 255

263 The 11 yr old is an amazing musician already, he is into track and field, reads anything he gets his hands on.
Meant to add that he sounds like a great kid. Music helps the brain with math somehow. I hope ours will be great readers, as I am and one son was. But the parents of these kids are not great readers. I am trying to encourage it and think our first girlie will be fine. We still have a ton of our sons books, so it is a priority. Track is also a great thing. My husband and his brother were long distance champs in NY. He ran a 4min mile. I ran a 12min mile because I hated it. I'm a swimmer and tennis person. I am thankful I can still swim when I get motivated to find a pool outside. Inside pools creep me out somehow. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at October 17, 2025 12:20 AM (6PCLE) 279

Hey everybody! Hey ONT! Hey Doof!
Texas only requires TWO guns to enter?! I thought their minimum was *much* higher! Also everyone, have a (admittedly slight) story to tell you all. I helped deport a Mexican at the border tonight. Posted by: qdpsteve at October 17, 2025 12:28 AM (/p+XQ) 281

Remember when, during the Barcelona Olympics, NBC kept calling the festivities "Club Barcelona"?
Also they pronounced club "cloob." Letterman was having some fun with that. Anyway, sounds like Cloob MoMee is going well. Posted by: qdpsteve at October 17, 2025 12:34 AM (/p+XQ) 286

Gun range safety briefing is 10am local time on Friday. NOT 8am!!!
Posted by: Doof at October 17, 2025 12:28 AM (ym7CX) Correct, but the rifle clinic is at 8am tomorrow. That’s not mandatory but the 10am safety briefing is if you are going to shoot. I got that from the schedule in the last Gun thread. Posted by: haffhowershower at October 17, 2025 12:44 AM (PjY10) 289
Hubby will not get to shoot. He will have to be happy that I will be tickled to meet y'all.

My take on the popsicle woman. I think that's some photographer's idea of a "remembrance" photo. I look at it this way.
Faded image up to the left is the dearly departed husband of this woman. The photo chosen from the past shows him eating a popsicle. And, she decided (or the photographer did) that she should mimic him to ...oh, I don't know...show some sort of connection. Just be grateful that dearly departed hubby wasn't doing something even more suggestive or obscene even. I just read what I wrote, and it's kind of depressing. Sorry about that. Posted by: Orson at October 17, 2025 01:02 AM (dIske) 291
Orson, as I recall it, photo studios were desperate during the 1970s and relied on all sorts of gimmicks to get people to come in.
Posted by: qdpsteve at October 17, 2025 01:06 AM (/p+XQ) 292
Orson, the mirror portrait was a thing in the 80s. Somewhere in the world is a photo of me as a 7th grade girl with a mullet. Mirrored. It was an abomination.i hope it never becomes a meme.

I swear -- We're having to take shifts keeping an eye on my dear 95 year old mother and her O2. She has to go the bathroom a lot at night. And I take the overnight shift. And now, while dozing, she will sometimes reach up and pull the canula out of her nose. Her O2 saturation dropped to 77%, and nearly gave me a heart attack. And the O2 supply outfit pissed me off this afternoon. I called to order some more portable tanks, and asked could they send one of the little humidifier bottles for the concentrator. The woman on the phone sounded like some Katie Porter type and snottily informed me we needed a "doctor's order" for that. After he stroke, they had her on O2 for a while, which she didn't really need. It was different supplier, and the delivery guy gave me two of those bottles right out of the truck. Only problem is, this machine is different and those old ones won't work, without some fitting adapters. That really pissed me off. I see I can order something from Amazon that will work with the fittings on this machine. Complete bullshit about doctor's orders and I don't know why she was pissy about it. Some medical/insurance people are jerks because they can be. Caretaking and advocating for a loved one is hard. There is a blessing in there but it is hard.

Ace Frehley question for anyone still up. Did he pronounce it "fray-ly" or "freely"? I've heard both from people on the TV. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at October 17, 2025 02:19 AM (w6EFb) 305

Heh, I just found a video of Ace being interviewed and asked the question. He said there are actually 3 different pronunciations people used. "Freely" wrong. He went on a bit about the distinction between "fray-ly" and more "freh-ly". He pronounces it close to the latter. The 'a' is not quite so hard. The way he pronounced it was sort of in between. Let's see I forgot the proper symbols for the different 'a' sounds. You got 'a' as in father, vs 'a' is in "bat". And then maybe subtle variations around those.
