NBC Lays Off 150 "Journalists," Sacking Its Black, Latinx, and Gay DEI Unites "NBC BLK," "NBC Latino," and "NBC OUT"

Racist homophobic NBC has officially joined MAGA.

They're slashing their payrolls in anticipation of spinning off basket-case MSNBC from also basket-case NBC "News." Also, they hate blacks and gays. Anytime you take an action adverse to the interests of any blacks or gays that means you're acting out of "hate," right? Right?

NBC News eliminated its teams dedicated to covering issues affecting Black, Asian American, Latino and LGBTQ+ groups as part of its layoffs of about 150 staffers on Wednesday, according to two sources familiar with the matter, a significant culling as the Peacock network separates from its sister news network, MSNBC.

The cuts mean that the verticals NBC BLK, NBC Asian America, NBC Latino and NBC OUT will no longer have dedicated teams bolstering their coverage. The verticals will continue to publish stories related to the specific groups and NBC News may ultimately retain up to five staffers who will contribute coverage on the verticals to the newsroom, according to one source, as the dedicated teams focused exclusively on these verticals are sunset.

The total reductions, which affected NBC News' entire news operation, make up about 7% of NBC News' newsroom of about 2,000 staffers and 2% of the wider NBCU News Group, which includes Telemundo and the network's owned-and-operated local news stations. The cuts did not target specific teams and were driven by the network's budget and the desire to streamline its editorial efforts, according to one source.

...

The job losses came as the network no longer needed to support two different news operations, as MSNBC has moved under the spun-off company Versant....

The layoffs also reflect the media industry's larger retreat from efforts focused on diversity, equity and inclusion. Gannett, the nation's largest newspaper chain, removed mentions of diversity from its website in April and said it would stop publishing demographic data on its website. Disney also rebranded its internal DEI efforts last week to "Opportunity & Inclusion," according to Puck.

MSNBC has begun growing its own newsroom, hiring swaths of talent from NBC News, the Washington Post, Politico and others as it builds its newsgathering operation. It plans to launch its rebranded image -- including its new name, MS NOW -- in the coming weeks.

LOL, sure.

CBS will also be laying off "journalists" soon:

Significant layoffs underway today at NBC News... big round of layoffs coming this quarter at CBS News...

Bonus: All of you guys who paid for a lifetime subscription to CNN Plus are going to be psyched about this -- CNN's about to launch its next failed streaming service.

I don't know about you, but the thing I miss most about cutting the cord is Jake Tapper's Enormous Honker. If I could see that big sneering nose and hear it honking like a flock of Canadian geese again, I'd just be ever so happy.

Speaking of failed network CNN: David Ellison has been looking to buy Warner Bros. Discovery, and thus CNN, as part of his spending spree to become an absolute media magnate. I don't know why they would even want the debt-plagued WBD. I sure as hell don't know why they'd want CNN.

Paramount made its offer to WBD, and the offer was refused. They're now preparing a bigger offer.

Paramount Skydance (NASDAQSKY) is preparing a second bid for Warner Bros. Discovery after its initial bid was rejected, according to a Los Angeles Times report on Sunday, which cited a person familiar with the matter. Warner Bros. Discovery shares rose 3.6%.

Billionaire Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison has agreed to help finance an offer from Paramount Skydance, which is run by his son David Ellison, according to the report.

The update comes after Bloomberg reported on Sunday that Warner Bros. Discovery (NASDAQ:WBD) initially rejected Paramount Skydance's (NASDAQSKY) bid for roughly $20 a share in recent weeks.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is said to want upwards of $30 a share in a deal, according to a NYPost report on Monday.

I just don't know why you'd want another movie studio when you already own two (Paramount and Skydance). Warner Bros. is on a winning streak this year with a bunch of hits, but so what? The movie business is entirely hit-and-miss and cyclical.

It's probably no secret by now that I think Ferrari builds overpriced crap cars and treats their customers like shit. Yet still buyers line up. Never underestimate brand prestige or Veblen appeal when it comes to selling the highest-end luxury products.

Of these 20 new "models," I suspect at least half are going to be very limited-run variations of existing models that are sold to their richest buyers. This is quick and easy way to make piles of money for doing basically nothing.

There may also be quick facelifts of the new Testarossa and 12Cilindri. The new TR has been universally hated for its exterior design, with the 12C not far behind. Ferrari does not like to be mocked.

I don't know how media companies are structured, so I need someone to draw me a picture of this:

>>The verticals NBC BLK, NBC Asian America, NBC Latino and NBC OUT will no longer have dedicated teams bolstering their coverage. The verticals will continue to publish stories related to the specific groups and NBC News may ultimately retain up to five staffers who will contribute coverage on the verticals to the newsroom, according to one source, as the dedicated teams focused exclusively on these verticals are sunset.

At first it looks like these "verticals" used to run stories from both NBC News, probably other sources like News Channel and News Source, and from their own dedicated teams -- but now they won't have the dedicated teams.

But then "The verticals will continue to publish stories related to the specific groups." So they'll get the stories from other services, like the aforementioned News Channel and News Source?

And then NBC News might have ~5 staffers who will -- makes no sense, seems like they'll get content from the verticals for the newsroom...

True, but the very fact that Gunn has to mewl that his major, splashy, heavily-pimped reboot of a very valuable IP might have turned a profit is pure cask-strength copeium. Profits just are not there anymore and this is what happens in declining industries. TV is declining, radio is nearly dead, and papers are dead. Movies are transitioning to streaming rather than showings at theaters. And streaming is still struggling to make a buck for some.

That is probably why Paramount is eying Warner Bros--HBO Max is one of the few streaming services making money supposedly. And a streaming service requires a catalog of work as people tire of some tv shows/movies and switch to another service for variety. I think HBO Max is one of the few resisting that trend of flux.

That's a common ploy used by companies that are spinning off less profitable businesses. In a manufacturing environment, that part of the company that was doing better will try to foist as much of the firm's environmental exposure (read: costs) onto the part that is getting turned out to pasture to pursue "new and exciting opportunities".

Some time later, the part left with the sacks of shit finds the courage to haul its former parent into court to seek redress for being left with said sacks of shit. Good times!

True, but the deal is much more complicated than that. I did some research and wrote a detailed comment on it a while back. The side with the debt gets substantial ownership in the side without the debt, it's all public so they have to find buyers (suckers?) to buy it, and the TV side despite some clunkers has some very valuable IP.

Will it work? Who knows? It will make banks rich.

"The Justice Department presented evidence to a federal grand jury in Maryland against former National Security Adviser John Bolton for allegedly transmitting highly classified materials through his private AOL email account during his 2018–2019 tenure.

The investigation centers on documents labeled Secret and Confidential related to weapons of mass destruction, as well as personal notes resembling a diary that may contain additional classified details.

Prosecutors argued that Bolton willfully removed, retained, or transmitted national defense information in violation of sections of the Espionage Act of 1917."

Rick Beato has already shown that there are no new bands rising up on the charts--basically as too costly for producers and record companies compared with promoting solo artists that have a large number of followers already.

Recording deals have declined to the point that legacy bands rely on touring for their bucks, not recordings and in many cases have already sold off their rights to private equity to exploit. Bowie, Springsteen, Pete Townshend/Who, Michael Jackson, the Beatles music publishing are all owned by large equity firms now.

If you take a look at the current spotify top acts, most of that publishing revenue goes to a producer/writing team and not the artist who gets the performing revenue. During streaming, the low royalty rates paid by streaming have essentially reduced performance royalties to a fraction of what they used to generate. Radio, which pays better, and record sales, ditto, are dwindling except for nostalgia acts and the very top artists like Tay Tay.

So to earn a living, they must tour even oldsters.

287 But that kind of future makes me a little sad. I don't go to more than one or two movies a year these days, but there's just nothing like watching a well-made film on a 25 foot or larger screen. And I'll always remember the 80s and 90s when going to one or two movies a month was just part of American life. A future without movie theaters is a downer.
Posted by: Crusader at October 16, 2025 02:03 PM (TN0g+)

One of our Multiplexes in the next town has two theaters with 60 foot screens, stadium seating and 48 channel Dolby Atmos sound. The only way to watch a movie. Saw Top Gun Maverick there as well. Fantastic.

The matched marketing cost, assuming $200 million, would put it right about at break even with the $600 million box office.

The split is usually 60-40 from studio to theaters on box office.

312 All I can say is, "GOOD." It is good. It is all very good to disembowel the media any way possible.

I think the last movie I saw in a theater was "The Passion of Christ." I could not deal with anyone yapping on a phone or being weird. We pick and choose what we like at home.

We went to our first concert in two decades this summer: Alison Krauss and Union Station in a botanical garden, under the stars. It couldn't have been more perfect. 3K people there, mostly around our age, mostly white (not that I care, but I did notice), as bluegrass is not on many Lantix! or black's choice. Polite and respectful crowd.

However, and we were all in camp chairs we dragged in for a picnic, there was one sow cow who just had to stand up and "dance." She looked the fool as I know how to dance. She did not impede my vision from her VIP roped off section, but the girl's diagonally behind me. As I am always willing to fight for others if I like them, I asked a volunteer if they could as fatty to sit down. They could not. Some of us yelled at her to sit down, which aroused her passive agressive self to stand til she got tired. The offended girl did move a bit and life went on, no problem.

Open Shot is the old standard of free video editing on windows and linux. That has improved quite a bit. Right now though, Power Director is probably the cat's meow if you really want all the bells and whistles but expensive now as a subscription service. Includes all sorts of royalty free music and visual add ins. Plus the latest and best video compression algorithms.

Older video software I used was Camtasia (decent but limited) and Premiere. Premiere got silly expensive as most Adobe products have become and as I said, Camtasia is old school but even there has become a subscription service.

None of these are professional grade but equal to what you would have found for much more back before 2010 or so.

People like communal experiences. Movies can be one. The movie theater will diminish over time, but it won't go away.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison

================

Exciting new movies in gigantic, beautiful theaters right down the street from Hollywood was so damn fun back in the day I can't even tell you. Premieres were huge. People brought sleeping bags to Westwood and spent the night on the sidewalk and then sat in line all day to be first in. (That's how safe Westwood was back then.) You would see directors, movie stars, anyone else you might recognize in the crowd. The audiences were half-rowdy -- you could feel all the emotions a movie was evoking. Maybe someone can bring that experience back. Maybe it will be live theater instead, which is doubly intense.

Probably closer to 50-50 now though due to the reliance on overseas markets, where the split is much less favorable to the studio. Like China's box office, Hollywood only gets something like 25% of the box office. That's probably the worst split but other countries aren't a great deal better.
