"Reptilicus" is hilarious. There are actually two versions--the AIP one in English and one in Dutch shot at the same time.
In the Dutch ones, Reptilicus flies. AIP thought it looked so bad they cut it out and substituted acid spit. Posted by: BeckoningChasm at October 19, 2025 07:03 PM (CHHv1) 6

Mine charges 20%, and for that they put them on the Gunbroker auction site, take care of shipping, and deal with all the paperwork with the buyers. Selling guns outright to pawn shops is a terrible idea. At the best of times, they can offer you only a fraction of the guns value, as they have to put it in their inventory and hope that they can someday sell it. At the worst of times, they will skin you like a catfish and laugh behind your back while they do it.

My observation about long range shooting. Theres a YouTube from X-Ring about how incredibly easy it is to shoot a mile these days. 100 yards is not a mile but over half a mile. With a decent rifle and scope it is very possible using your weasel taught math and an app on your phone.
Well, at least the ranging. Windage takes some mystical arts. If you can do the windage yourself you can shoot a long way with not much invested in equipment. Posted by: blaster at October 19, 2025 07:34 PM (HfCWn) 62

Expect Weasell and others are on the road so probably not in a burning mode. For me it’s a Perdomo Bourbon-barrel Habano on the porch on a spectacular warm fall day. Anyway, gun stuff. Talk about making lemonade from lemons. That car accident already saved me $1K. Local shop, advertising on Armslist had a really nice Parker double barrel 12 gauge. I've always wanted a Parker. I don't need a Parker. But if I would have had the KIA parked by my door I would have had a Parker and be out $1K.

I brought 2 Remington heavy barrel 700s in 308 that weren't fired in 35 years. 1 that was never fired ever with a new scope that I laser bore sighted before I left home. Right out of the box it was only a little right and a little high at 100 yards. A small bit of adjustment and it was good. For shits and giggles I went right for the 700yd target, which at the time I thought was a 500 yard target. It has the mil-rad reticle, so I did the right holds for wind and elevation and hit it on the first shot. It was a bit of relief because it's been 35 years. The other rifle didn't do so good. Rifle was fine, the cereal box Bushnell scope took a shit. That will get a new one as soon as I get home, and the old scope is getting the Carlos hathcock treatment.

The person needing to sell some estate guns would be wise to find a shop taking consignments. There's a big shop in Hot Springs, and they only charge 15% IIRC. Now, legal stuff comes up. If the shop is selling it, they have to do the 4473 and if anything goes sideways after that they are the responsible party.

Man,
I would purchase a Bluebook of Gun Values at Amazon or Barnes and Noble. The front of the book describes and has pictures of gun grading examples and is the most complete of price books. Gun Collectors Guide us similarly available but may lack odd variations that can be quite rare. Then price the collection as a whole and item by item. If you come to have a dealer put them on gun broker, you should decide if there is a reserve price, penny auction, or beginning at a set price but no reserve. There is also a hybrid buy it now price set above auction starting price auctions. Occasionally a semi rare collection can be sold to a dealer as a whole who does pickup, paperwork, etc. FFLs can buy and sell across state lines, individuals usually can't. Also consider whatever state laws apply where the owner lives. Still easier to liquidate while living than as part of an estate later on. Posted by: man ------ The consignment idea is probably the easiest route, but the fastest requires a little more work. Make a list of each gun with description, serial #, and a picture. Send this list to a bunch of large gun stores all over the state, rather than just local - but stay in Texas, going out of state becomes a paperwork nightmare - asking the for a bid on the lot. You'll probably lose 10% on what you could get, but you'll be done. This is what a neighbor's estate did - he had over a hundred guns - and they were done in a couple of weeks. It was done because all the heirs and the executor lived hundreds of miles away. Posted by: buddhaha at October 19, 2025 08:12 PM (88Uk6) 134

My estate situation is also (very) far away. Have long known how to use GunBroker etc to get a general market price for guns, figure that will be the basis of my estimates. This owner I know to have had some unusual guns (not Class III or anything, more special rifles built for local purposes), but most of them will be pretty conventional, and all in good condition. I do think he had a "box" of H&K P7s, but how many, what condition, mags or not, dunno.
Will do an assessment of the local gun stores. This is in a very gun-oriented western state. Most likely outcome is a few will go to heirs, most will be sold (either consignment or outright) to local store, avoiding all transport/legal complications. "Reptilicus" wasn't Dutch, it was Danish. The monster ravages "Tivoli," one of the world's first and greatest amusement parks, and I think The Little Mermaid in the harbor gets a piece of the action too. The effects may be laughable, but the B-movie plot is pretty intelligent. It might be Denmark's only monster movie, if you don't count various takes on Beowulf.
The writer was Ib Melchior, whose father Lauritz was the most famous Wagner tenor in the world -- probably who they had in mind when they did the Bugs Bunny parodies -- and had a pretty good sense of humor himself, playing characters after he retired from the Met, and even had a pilot sitcom about a retired opera singer, if you can imagine such a thing. Ib had his fingers in a lot of odd science fiction projects, and lived to be 98. I think we wrote him up when he passed on a few years ago. Reptilicus may be the best bad movie you'll ever see. Man,
There are actual nostalgia collectors now for JC Higgins or Ted Williams brands (Sears store brands) and other such. Some 50's models of center-fire were made by FN or Winchester for example. High Standard made some of their 22 lr revolvers and so on. Ditto for Montgomery Ward, Western Auto, Otasco, etc. One rare Winchester made under the Sears JC Higgins brand name is the famed model 70 pre 64 for example with a plain stock. Expect Weasell and others are on the road so probably not in a burning mode. For me it’s a Perdomo Bourbon-barrel Habano on the porch on a spectacular warm fall day. Cabrillo monument closed due to King Trump’s shutdown, but we had a great walk down on the bay and had a nice view of LHD-4, USS Boxer, returning to base, presumably after taking part in the amphibious festivities up at Pendleton yesterday.

213 Anyone have a "recoil plate" for a Detonics Combat Master laying around?
Posted by: WiseguyThreeOne at October 19, 2025 09:04 PM I put a big Lost & Found box of valuable and semi-valuable items in the MoMe closest. However, I did not specifically check all of the contents. If you can wait a year (sorry) for the recoil plate, then there is a decent chance you can retrieve it at MoMe 11. All three were fine as far as that goes, the PPQ was snappy, the trigger on the FNP45 was...different, the XD45 was best overall but my holster for it isn't great. Need a new IWB holster.
