Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Tuesday Overnight Open Thread - October 14, 2025 [Doof]![]() Bishop Paolo? Bishop Forced to Resign After Being Accused of Having 17 Secret Lovers ![]() A Peruvian bishop submitted his resignation to Pope Leo after a Vatican investigation revealed that he was secretly dating multiple women simultaneously. 51-year-old Ciro Quispe Lopez, the bishop of Juli, in Peru, stands accused of having up to 17 secret lovers. Although he denies the allegations against him as part of a defamation campaign by ‘dark hands’, Lopez handed in his resignation to the Pope last month, more than two decades earlier than Catholic bishops usually retire. The Vatican investigation began after an investigation by Kevin Moncada, a journalist for the Peruvian newspaper Sin Fronteras, found that Ciro Quispe Lopez had been exchanging explicit messages, photos and videos with various women. On top of that, he accidentally sent pictures and videos intended for his mistresses to his house cleaner, who alerted the Catholic Church. “A nun who was one of Quispe’s lovers was jealous of a lawyer the bishop was also seeing and sent information about his affairs to a third lover who got into a fight with the lawyer,” Paola Ugaz, a Peruvian journalist who has seen a Vatican document on the investigation, told The Times. “It was a real soap opera, but also lifted the lid on a serious abuse of power. Many of the 17 women were too scared to come forward because they were frightened of him.”The Paolo he, how you say, gives mad respect.
Just days after the federal government shut down, a wave of illicit activity began in Yosemite National Park. Since the beginning of October, there has been an uptick in illegal camping, unpermitted hiking, and BASE jumping within the park. Half Dome, one of the most sought-after hikes in the park, has seen hikers taking advantage of the strained resources to score a trip up on the peak’s infamous cabled section without a permit. Recent videos and photographs show walls of people on the iron cables, likely a result of unpermitted hikers attempting the summit at the same time as those with permits. At this time, it’s unclear how many Yosemite employees were deemed “essential” to continue operations during the government shutdown. But with significant park resources like visitor centers and information booths closing down across the country, national parkgoers are unable to access ordinarily available resources. In addition, national park websites don’t get regular updates during government shutdowns, which contributes to a lack of information to incoming visitors. The shutdown hasn’t just brought hikers trying to sneak onto famous trails; it has also brought illegal campers, according to reporting by SFGATE. Permitted camping tends to be strictly enforced within park boundaries, but now, people are taking advantage of the limited park resources and illegally setting up camp.Check out the whole thing. I really like Ratt's EP and first two albums a lot. And Vinnie Vincent Invasion's first album. For bluesy: I like Whitesnake, particularly Slide It In and the self-titled album after that. Or Cinderella's first album. Though those are hair metal adjacent at the very least. Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at October 14, 2025 10:22 PM (y+qgR) 98

Yeah, foreigners are pretty stupid in national parks. Most foreigners come from places where they literally never - in their entire lives - have encountered a pristine forest or any wildlife, and it shows. They have no concept that wild animals are dangerous, or that there are no slavish janitors coming along to pick up after them. They think it's a theme park - particularly the Asians.
But nobody in the world is more horrible than American hippies in the national forests. Not because they don't know, but because they don't care, and unlike the parks, the forests are largely unpatrolled. These pigs will set up shop and wreck the place until they get kicked out - by which time, the place looks like a garbage dump. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at October 14, 2025 11:06 PM (BI5O2) 249

But nobody in the world is more horrible than American hippies in the national forests. Not because they don't know, but because they don't care, and unlike the parks, the forests are largely unpatrolled. These pigs will set up shop and wreck the place until they get kicked out - by which time, the place looks like a garbage dump.

You could still do it depending on conditions, usually the snow is too deep for xc skiing.
Posted by: Minnfidel ----- Huh? On racing XC skis, maybe. Skis of "normal" width and length will stay up on top of anything except fresh powder. The big problem with XC skiing into deep backcountry is that most people aren't very good on real downhills. If your experience is on XC trails, you haven't gone down anything steep and long. Telemarking requires lots of training and practice, step turns are so slow they don't control speed, and holding a solid snowplow with floppy bindings is really difficult. That's where the problems arise. I've taken boy scouts out on 10 mile overnights multiple times on deep snow in the Cascades. qdpsteve,
For burgers at home, the first thing is never buy hamburger buns in the 8-pack. They suck bigly; too small. I use a roll and make a 1/4 to 1/3 lb. burger, shaped large to fit the bun. Once they're shaped, I put salt, cracked black pepper and a dusting of smoked paprika on each side. I also prefer shaved lettuce over big honking pieces. But to each his own. You'll learn what you like the more you make something. My Italian hero recipe is simple. The cold cuts (pepperoni, salami, smoked ham, then maybe mortadella with pistachios, hot or sweet capicola, or whatever feels good at the moment), imported provolone, a jar of roasted red pepper slices (patted dry), and a pureed spread of roasted garlic/Kalamata olives/Parmegianno Regianno. It elevates the sandwich. Make the sandwich and wrap it in plastic and let it sit out a half-an-hour to an hour to get the chill off. Remember: The irony of cold cuts is they are not meant to be eaten cold. Posted by: RickZ at October 15, 2025 12:19 AM (gKDq2) 399

From where I sit, pizza is too much trouble to make. Too many ingredients, too much time. Time has value, too. Better off, once in a while, to buy a pizza from a reputable pizza joint. Consider it a treat.
A pot of spaghetti is easy to do, if you use a canned sauce. Not much prep work involved. Get a crock pot. Use it to make stews, and chili, and soups. You do the prep work in the morning, and the crock pot simmers all day, and yields a delicious hot meal come supper time. And usually a day or two's worth of yummy leftovers, too. For those of us living the single life, it is a real boon. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at October 15, 2025 12:28 AM (8zz6B) 417

RickZ, if you have to watch salt, I know you *have* to pretty much cook for yourself. EVERYTHING that's ready-made at the store, fast food joint, or a restaurant is packed with salt.
In fact that's one of the funniest thing I learned, when I was teaching myself to make dishes at home. It can actually be *difficult* to add too much salt, sometimes. Posted by: qdpsteve at October 15, 2025 12:33 AM (/p+XQ) 425

It's a lot further away than Catalina but San Clemente Island is where Cicero needs to go (when he's got a few days). Was usually all motoring from down here (overnight), 68 miles from tip of Pt Loma to Pyramid Cove, but from Dana Point could be a broad reach sail I would think.
Just check scisland.org to make sure you won't be running afoul of cruise missiles, submarines, UUVs, aircraft, or other stuff you pay for. Usually weekends the Cove is open for recreational boaters. Just checked and the site has a notice up which illustrates why it's such a cool destination: "Effective 16 SEP 2022 a semi-permanent training mine field is bounded by the following coordinates: 32°47'45"N 118°24'18"W (and so on) But really it's an untouched marine environment, feels like you could be hundreds of miles from CA. Same for canned red beans going into rice and beans. Use dried. Their meatier and more filling. Now canned red beans make fine refried beans (for burritos, tacos and the like). Oh my, I almost threw up in my mouth a little bit reading that. Grits are not a vehicle for sweet stuff. Not at all. I'm sure that would violate the Grits Law here. Grits are a vehicle for salt, pepper, and butter. For me, that's all I need. Now, cheese and shrimp and some other savory things are sometimes added. There's even some Jalapeno grits recipes. In my experience with the US military dining facilities in spicy locales overseas, the southern influence was pronounced, and of course a blessing. Grits at breakfast every day. Had rarely had them, but they became a staple (when I made it to breakfast). Fried chicken at lunch and dinner (usually), oh my. But the worst: the leftover fried chicken at mid-rats, and worst of all, the aroma from mid-rats was usually detectable at my luxurious quarters. Somehow I returned about the same weight.

Nice to see these revoked visas, but remain stunned at the lawlessness and damage to constitutional executive authority in the case of the Columbia idiot. SecState's power to revoke visas for national security/foreign policy reasons is pretty much plenary. Of all the substantive areas the judiciary is neither authorized nor competent to deal with - which is most - foreign policy stands at the top. Yet the administration has acquiesced to ridiculous lawless aggrandizement by the judiciary. If the big guy and his advisers really want their change of direction to have some legs, they need to start making the bold moves and start restoring constitutional order.

I was just looking into this. Stone ground and what I'll dub "regular" grits are not really the same. Stone ground is coarser and less refined, the kernel and germ gets ground up in the mix as well. This makes the shelf life less than regular grits (never been a problem, as I go through it fast enough). The "20 minute" rule famously popularized in "My Cousin Vinny" is for the regular grits. Stone ground is more 25 minutes. Now, yellow stone ground can take even longer. I like yellow grits upon occasion.
