Oklahoma Girls Basketball Team Returns Championship After Discovering They Actually Lost ![]() In a powerful display of honesty and sportsmanship, a high school basketball team in Oklahoma City has become a national example of integrity — by giving up their own championship title. The Academy of Classical Christian Studies girls basketball team had just celebrated what they thought was a thrilling victory. Their buzzer-beater in last season’s division championship game against Apache High School seemed to seal a 44–43 win and their place in the record books. But that same night, head coach Brendan King went home and rewatched the game footage — and something didn’t feel right. “As soon as I walked out of the locker room, my stomach kind of turned into knots,” King told CBS News. “I said, ‘I’m going to need to know if we really won this game or not.’” King painstakingly reviewed each basket, and his worst fear was confirmed: the scoreboard had been off. The actual score was 43–42, meaning Apache High had been the true winner. “It really tore me to pieces,” King said. By league rules, the score couldn’t be changed once the game was over. The Academy’s win was official — at least on paper. But when King told his players what he had discovered, their response made him proud. Together, the team made an extraordinary decision: they asked that their championship be revoked and awarded to Apache High School. The league agreed, and Coach King personally delivered the championship plaque to Apache.Amazing display of honesty and sportsmanship! Desperate to get into prison and help his young grandson, a 60-year-old man from Guadeloupe robbed a local supermarket at gunpoint and then waited patiently to be arrested. The unusual incident took place at the end of September in Sainte-Rose, a commune in the north of the Guadeloupe archipelago. A former firefighter with no criminal record walked into a supermarket located near the local police station with a balaclava over his mouth and holding a firearm. After demanding all the money in the cash register and helping himself to “a piece of Emmental cheese and a bottle of wine,” the man was arrested as he slowly walked back to his car, as if he wanted to be caught. It turns out that this was his goal exactly, as he wanted to get into prison to help his grandson.A bit much, don't ya think?
![]() ![]() A fashion plate showcasing the bustle’s bold curve, circa 1875. ![]() ![]() Such jabs highlighted the bustle’s preposterousness, but it was a cultural flex. Its size signaled wealth, as only the elite could afford the fabric for such lavish silhouettes. The lobster tail in particular screamed high fashion, demanding intricate draping to accentuate its sharp lines. Yet, it sparked debate: doctors warned of spinal strain and reformers decried its impracticality. ![]() ![]() By the late 1880s, slimmer lines took over, though bustles briefly returned in the 1890s with subtler “swayback” styles. ![]() ![]() Today, the bustle’s bold spirit inspires. In prep to adding a whole-house surge protection unit to my breaker cabinet, I removed the cover. Okay - so all of a sudden, the exhaust hood didn't have power. Checked the breaker - flipped it Off and then back On. No joy. The hood is new so I assumed it was still good. Checked the receptacle for current. Nope. Neither of the outlets. Took the cover off and then checked the hot wire to the receptacle. Still nothing. Checked all the GFCIs even though that circuit shouldn't be on any of them - all good to tested and reset them anyway. Damn!! Went back out to the breaker boxes (I have two) and with a tester plugged into the 'bad' outlet and my wife watching it, went thru the entire boxes and flipped most of them off and back on - all except the 'obviously can't be on that circuit' ones. You know, HVAC, Oven, Pump, Water Heaters, Microwave, etc. STILL NOTHING AND THIS IS STARTING TO FROST MY BEHIND!!!! Finally, it dawns on me. The 'Microwave' circuit isn't. Last year when I replaced the MW with a vented hood and moved the MW to a different spot, I didn't change the label in the breaker box. The hood breaker was 'Off'. Damn. I remember a lot of both my grandmother's ancient things in their kitchens. I remember a strange toaster where the sides tilted down, and each side held one slice of bread. There was a sugar bowl with a top that had a small piano hinge running across the center, and it flipped up on one side. One granny had a percolator that needed the burner on the stove to heat it. Depression glass was the other things. Both had a pile of it. The shit was far older than me, but people didn't just throw stuff out in their generation. I think they kept it until the earth reclaimed it.

Klein and Favreau have a podcast where they argue the point of the government shut down is to rebuild the Democrat's electoral fortunes.
Its interesting they would be so obvious about it. But it does reinforce the notion that this resolution of this shut down will be a pivotal moment for the country. If the Dems get funding for illegals turned back on they'll spend the next year and a half grinding the government to a halt with ever more insane schemes...and they'll win the midterms. I hope, and at this point expect, that Trump has played this all out and will continue to make the shut down worse and worse for the left. But from an apolitical perspective, keeping the government shut down until the midterms isn't a bad idea anyway. We have too much debt, there are very, very few things the government is spending money that are more important then just not increasing the debt. Hollywood finds new depths of depravity.
They are making a movie 'based' on the trials at Nuremberg. Yeah, I can smell the stench of wokeness and failure through the screen. Where did this woman come from arguing with this man that there is no international laws about war crimes? Is this going to be another 'inspired' by true event piece of flotsam? I do think so. Cameras everywhere. We live in a digital panopticon.
And just like that - when nobody can get away with shit, they decided “Fuck it. Posted by: JQ at October 12, 2025 11:22 PM (rdVOm) I have some 1920's radio sets with Bakelite knobs and panels, that are still strong and dimensionally true. 1920's Bakelite has stood the test of time a whole lot better than 1920's "pot metal". The one "antique" plastic that failed dramatically was catalin. Ironically, catalin is in the same chemical family as Bakelite, namely "phenol-formaldehyde", but whereas Bakelite had a lot of filler material, like fabric, carbon black, or ground mica in it which added strength and stability, catalin was just pure resin, and dyes. It made beautiful works or art, but they would shrink and crack readily. They made some really wonderful Art Deco radio cabinets out of catalin, but there are few remaining examples, because the catalin plastic degraded so badly. Maybe I spelled it wrong. Could be Cellulous Acetate. I heard it said both ways. First plastic known to mankind from what I remember. Came out in the earlier 1800s. Was used for pool balls, door knobs, etc. I think we know it best from being on accordions. Us vintage guitar guys know it from being used as fingerboard inlays and guitar picks. the vintage 50's gibsons used it for fingerboard inlays. The downside is it would shrink. I think it's still being made in italy. There's a huge market for it in some guitar circles. Guys would pay to have their reissue guitars redone with the correct inlays. One of mine was done by the previous owner. Actually done by the dude who does Satriani's guitars. Nothing else looks like it, the plastic modern stuff doesn't capture it.

I don't see how a basketball game score could be in error and not discovered immediately. Somebody on each bench is keeping score. Fans are looking at the scoreboard after every basket to see the number change. (Or, in this case, I guess, to see 2 points awarded when no basket was made). Fans for one side would be howling at the scorekeeper.

There was a casein based plastic used, it was basically milk proteins treated with formaldehyde.
I think it was called Galalith, and it had a nice ivory color but could also be dyed other colors. it is not as stable as bakelite, so it crazes and goes milky. It was used in combs and buttons and radio parts. Posted by: Kindltot at October 12, 2025 11:41 PM (rbvCR) Posted by: Blanco Basura - Z28.310 at October 12, 2025 11:42 PM (lUFok) 282

Wiki article on Bakelite is pretty good.
They could use the resin to make pretty translucent items. The long lasting product would have wood /fiber or canvas fillers and be the classic brown or black. Really good stuff if using asbestos fabric. Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at October 12, 2025 11:47 PM (/lPRQ) 292

Any of the swirly looking plastic of the 30's, 40's, and 50's was no doubt celluloid, or cellulous. I heard it both ways but it's the same shit. Its super flammable, so it mostly fell to the wayside. Guitar picks are made from it. You light up a guitar pick it will burn like a flare and won't leave an ash. I found that out the hard way years ago when I stuck a cigarette in an ashtray that had a worn guitar pick laying in it. Some of the vintage 50's guitars that had the tortoise shell pickguards were made from it. As it decomposed and shrank it would turn any metal around it green from the out gassing of the chemicals in it.

Pretty much standard for the automotive industry. You need a material that resists heat, can be accurately molded to fine dimensions, and is a perfect electrical insulator. Bakelite fills the bill. A lot of the phenolic art plastic was by the Dura Corp in Toledo. They shut down their landfill, The Dura Dump, in the late 30's and the site is still hot. About a block away was the General Tire Textileather plant, that made the unique "Toltex" patterned fabric you need to restore amplifier cases. When things were going good, of course, those sites were clear out past the edge of town and nobody was much bothered. The Ottawa River flowing between them escaped everyone's notice.

I don't know if they do this outside of the guitar circles, but on the real high end guitars they use real mother of pearl inlays. 250 The problem with Bakelite was it only came in black or brown, or near enough. There was another kind of “plastic” before plastic, used for household items like radios that was in bright colors, orange, red, blue, green etc, and swirls, that was pretty collectible. Art deco AM radios in brilliant colors used to get serious $$$. It shrinks, unlike Bakelite, and cracks.
What the hell was that shit called? Posted by: Common Tater My first thought was Melmac, or more generically, melamine resin plastic. But that came in the 1940s, so a little too late for the Art Deco heyday. If you use a different brand push rod it could change, because it might be a different thread pitch. If its not 32 threads per inch and is 24 threads per inch the stock adjustment in the manual goes out the frigging window. I told him a scientific way to get it right every time. 318 Melamine ground up fools the device used to measure protein content in things like wheat flour or milk powder. Get a better price on bulk shipments, cargo ships or whatever. Kidney failure in dogs or babies, no worries. Posted by: Common Tater at October 13, 2025 12:13 AM ----- The Chinese farmers / ag dealers spike their agricultural products with melamine monomer. Melamine is a six-membered aromatic ring with three carbons and three nitrogens -- water soluble and loaded with nitrogen. Protein content of dairy products etc. is often measured as nitrogen content. The melamine fools the measurement, and gets a higher price. Polymerized melamine does not dissolve -- would not poison people and pets. Posted by: Semi-Literate Thug at October 13, 2025 12:52 AM (DokPW) 358

Part 2
The hydraulic unit has 1/4" of travel, or .250, and you want to land in the middle, thats 1/8" OR .125, so close the pushrod all the way, grab a micrometer/caliper and set it for .125, and then see how many turns on the pushrod brings you to .125, or 1/8". that puts you right in the middle of the hydraulic units range. Its fool proof. No matter the thread pitch or the maker of the pushrod, you'll get it right every time if you measure how many turns it takes for you to make the pushrod 1/8" longer. Easy right? Not this guy. He comes back with well I was taught 3 1/2 turns. Are you a fucking idiot? Meanwhile, harley stop using adjustable pushrods on their last few engines, and went with a fixed custom length for each valve, and they can't be mixed up. You CAN put adjustable ones in, but you need to know the thread pitch and use the formula if the instructions of the pushrods don't tell you. So what does this chucklehead do? He does pushrods in his friends motor, and uses the 3 1/2 turn spec for an engine they haven't made in 40 years on a newer engine, and bends the pushrods and valves when he goes to start it. I was going off the previous example before, but I *get it* about measuring the travel. Apparently both Axis and Allied forces used PMMA, aka Plexiglass, Lucite, Perspex, etc. (all different brand names) in WWII. It seems to have been invented independently by a couple of British chemists working together and a German chemist at about the same time in the early 1930s. Du Pont claims to have invented its own version in 1936, but that was after seeing the British and German versions already on the market.

No rod adjustment.
Ugh Posted by: JQ, playing Carnac at October 13, 2025 01:06 AM (rdVOm) JQ, its really easy. There are only 4 pushrods and they are color coded with a band of paint. Put the right color in the right spot and you're done, and the book will tell you what goes where. If there are no colors, like if they get worn off just lay the pushrods down. The longest is front exhaust, the next shortest is rear exhaust, the next shortest is front intake, and the last one which is the shortest is rear intake. I do it that way anyway just in case. Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at October 13, 2025 01:12 AM (dhIRp) Older harleys can be run as solid or hydraulic. The hydraulic unit is a separate unit that literally drops into the lifter, remove it, drop a solid adapter in and poof, you got solids. Then you adjust them to where you can just spin the pushrods. They are all roller cams too. In 1984 with the new evo engine the hydraulic units are different, more like a car, and the 99-up twincam motors basically use chevy LS lifters. The make hydro-solids for the '84 -up newer engines. There is a travel limiter in the unit, so they get adjusted down to the limiter like a solid, but then backed off like a 1/2 turn. Hydraulic quiet while cruising around, solid when you grab a handful of throttle. Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at October 13, 2025 01:22 AM (snZF9) 386

People worry about plastics materials hanging around forever, but art museums displaying artifacts made of plastics are having a hard time preserving them. This seems to be a bigger problem with some plastics than others. On the other hand the Smithsonian is having trouble preserving Neil Armstrong’s lunar space suit due to plasticizer leakage from PVC tubing inside the suit.
