The Trump Administration’s Purge of Illegal Truck Drivers Is Having a Huge Impact
to foreign nationals who don’t speak English or know U.S. traffic laws. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement just arrested an illegal alien who was provided a CDL in New York under the name, “NO NAME GIVEN.”
Craig Fuller is a former trucking and logistics executive who now operates Freightwaves, a publication dedicated to those industries. After Donald Trump’s election in November, Mr. Fuller was thought to be a candidate for Transportation Secretary, and although he didn’t get that job, Fuller has the ear of all major players in the trucking and logistics industries.
In recent days, Mr. Fuller and Freightwaves have been documenting a massive federal effort, ”The Compliance Crunch,” to go after drivers operating illegally. This is obviously also disruptive to those enterprises who put unskilled and illegal drivers behind the wheel of semi-trucks.
With immigration authorities and regulatory agencies targeting any trucks on the road in violation of federal regulations, massive fraud is being revealed, including:
• Carriers bring foreign truck drivers in on tourist visas, have them drive for 90 days, at which time they leave and are replaced by another driver on the 90-day cycle. Per Craig Fuller, “Entire fleet business models [are] built around this.”
• Eastern European drivers are being brought in by organized crime syndicates from their home countries, and operating with little understanding or respect for US laws.
• Because of the crackdown, alien truckers are starting to ditch their trucks along highways, leaving them for the trucks’ owners to come pick up.• ICE and cooperating police agencies are aggressively patrolling truck stops. • Carriers that rely on cheap foreign truck drivers are reporting massive absenteeism. Per Mr. Fuller, “This is going to destroy entire business models. Trucking companies only survive through cashflows of running freight. They are toast if this goes on.” • Truck stop parking lots are suddenly much emptier than normal. • ICE is also showing up at businesses where shipments are loaded and unloaded, verifying that the truckers have legitimated CDLs. Shippers therefore are becoming proactive in ensuring that only legal drivers are backing up to their warehouse docks, and refusing to load or receive shipments from non-compliant drivers. • Trucking companies and freight brokers are being advised by legal counsel to immediately cease working with non-US domiciled truck drivers and those who lack a legal United States CDL. Mr. Fuller quotes one of them as telling him, “Plaintiff attorneys will scorch any broker or carrier for hiring an illegitimate driver.” • Insurance companies are likely to refuse to provide insurance going forward for companies unless they prohibit the hiring of truck drivers lacking US-domiciled CDLs. As to this last point, Craig Fuller states that “It’s all over” in regards to the business practice of employing illegal aliens and unqualified foreigners to drive semi-trucks on American roads.

Trucking and logistics companies should be taking immediate steps to mitigate increased exposure to drivers with non-domiciled commercial driver’s licenses – including an audit of all existing employee or contract drivers, a regulations expert advises. That advice, included in a legal alert by Greg Reed, a partner at Hanson Bridgett LLP, comes in the wake of an emergency rule issued in September by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration overhauling who is eligible for a non-domiciled CDL. In the alert, Reed points out that if an accident were to occur, plaintiffs’ attorneys would likely argue that logistics and trucking companies are on notice that non-domiciled CDLs may be operating unlawfully and are insufficiently qualified.It’s estimated that of the roughly 3.9 million commercial truck drivers currently operating in the U.S., roughly 200,000 (5%) will not be able to continue driving as a result of the Trump administration crackdown. Most truck drivers on America’s roads are legal and most companies operate ethically. But it is a disgrace that ethical companies and licensed American truck drivers have had to compete with foreign labor that operates as a form of chattel, being paid below-market labor rates while under the control of illegitimate operators. With the impending shakeout, shipping rates will improve for the remaining (legitimate) carriers, and American truck drivers will see the value of their labor increase with the illegal labor being removed from the marketplace. But for those companies operating illicitly, good riddance.
You know what though? These carriers did this to themselves, exploiting loopholes for bottom dollar drivers to be behind the wheels of their trucks. There was full programs running to cover visas, if they came to drive for companies in the US, and fill one more seat saving $$$

In conclusion, I found this final tweet by Mr. Fuller to be refreshingly honest, but it’s also a frustrating reminder of how easy it is to have unwavering philosophic principles until the day comes that our principles get mugged by reality. In this case, he acknowledges that his libertarian, pro-immigration, open-border beliefs have been devastating to the American trucking industry and to American truck drivers.
As a libertarian, I was always pro immigration and have an enormous amount of empathy for people that are born in very poor and unstable countries. I know how fortunate I am to be born in America. But over the past few years, my perspective has changed. I've seen what unrestricted immigration has done to the trucking industry and how it has destroyed the livelihood of millions of veteran American truck drivers. It has made the trucking industry an economic wasteland and made it impossible for legit operators to make a profit and survive.

I am disappointed that when illegals are pulled over and caught, the truck and its cargo are not forfeit. That should be the first thing done after the driver is deported. Then, on top of losing the truck and contents, criminal charges should be brought against the owner.

After accidents by illegals, some of whom could not speak English and had no name on their license, I am very glad for the crackdown. NJ roads are clogged enough without people who cannot read the signs being another incredible hazard. It's indefensible .

Adding people from other cultures will change your own. Now, when it is a small number of people, from a similiar culture, and you push the newcomers to abandon their previous culture and adopt yours the negative impacts are minimized...and it can be worth it to get the skills those immigrants bring.
But for 20+ years we've been bringing in millions from cultures nothing like our own, celebrating their cultures over heritage America's, and putting them straight on welfare.
Unlimited immigration has been an abject failure for everyone that isn't getting to harvest their votes or grift off their welfare payments

Anecdotal of course, but I was at the DMV (MVC in NJ) last week for a new license and the clerk told me that they have been told to crack down on all CDLs. She said that they are digging deep into the documentation!

And I saw one woman trying to RENEW her license that they sent home because she didn't have something they wanted...you know beyond the expired license, with her picture on it...
But over the loudspeaker, in every language known to man, they were saying that if you were an undocumented immigrant they would take whatever you had or...nothing.

I know some residential home building companies do it to a lesser degree.
I was sent to a six week school when I was a new hire in my white collar profession.

It's going to take a while to replace with qualified drivers. There may be some out there looking to get their old job back but after that... driving a rig without tearing it up or wrecking it is no easy task.
Rigs are so expensive it's surprising that companies gave that responsibility to unqualified drivers. They used to be uptight about that.

Just imagine how colorful our traffic would be if dot Indian drivers here painted and decorated their trucks like they do in Southern Asia! After a couple of them do it, it might go viral, and the fad spread across the USA.
Kinda like our native 'taggers' deface railroad freight cars, except less banal.

I'm on the interstates quite a bit, have my whole life. Even before this whole illegal trucker fiasco hit the news I've noticed over the last several years how rare it is to see what appears to be a non-foreigner behind the wheel of those rigs. Now it's exclusively Mexican and middle east/Indian.

Your state is frankly maliciously incompetent. Real ID was passed back in GWB era and has been the law of the land for nearly two decades. Waiver after Waiver when states whined they weren't ready for it when in truth, it would affect illegals that the elites, political and commercial, wanted here for their own purposes.

This past Spring the company I work for told all suppliers they would not take trucks driven by truckers who could not speak English. They done this after President Trump said it was illegal for trucking companies to do this. Even for small deliveries, like vans. The shipping and receiving departments were so proud to get rid of these drivers. It hampered their work. Have not had a problem since.

The Trump administration is cracking down, especially as it applies to aliens who are not licensed to operate these vehicles. The crackdown is revealing that a great many of these drivers are in the country illegally.
I would guess that 75% of the problems in this country would go away immediately with a simple enforcement of the country's, state's and city's laws.
The vast majority of the problems in the country are due to lack of will to enforce laws or deliberate non-enforcement of laws (blue cities/states... "space to destroy") as well as corruption.
This is why I have always been against "comprehensive immigration reform" since the 2006 Amnesty betrayal by W and the GOPe. There is no need for "immigration reform". There is 100% a need for enforcement of immigration laws and deportation of all illegal aliens.

As a libertarian, I was always pro immigration and have an enormous amount of empathy for people that are born in very poor and unstable countries. I know how fortunate I am to be born in America. But over the past few years, my perspective has changed. I've seen what unrestricted immigration has done to the trucking industry and how it has destroyed the livelihood of millions of veteran American truck drivers. It has made the trucking industry an economic wasteland and made it impossible for legit operators to make a profit and survive.
I've considered myself more of a libertarian in my beliefs for a long while (probably considered more of a Classical Liberal now). I've never believed open borders was a great idea, and it was obvious what the damage was going to be way back in the 90s before it got so bad in the last two decades.
This guy should apply that same ideological conversion of his to not just the trucking industry but every industry in the country that has replaced Americans with cheap imports.
The harm went a lot further than truck drivers, and that should've been obvious to anybody not blinded by some reality-denying ideological belief.

I think it bears mentioning that this will inevitably increase the cost of freight and thus, will increase the cost of everything. Just like energy prices increase the cost of everything - there is nothing that is mined, harvested, collected, processed, manufactured, packaged and delivered without a diesel-burning truck bringing it to where its point of sale is.
Now if we could get these stubbornly high diesel prices down (I'm still paying > $4/gallon for it up here) then that will offset a huge chunk of that labor cost increase.

Please do not read TOO much into "no name given".
There are parts of the world that do not follow the surname/given name structure of naming we use, and basically just have *A* name. When transferring that singular name onto a western ID, it's put into either the surname or the given name field, with the other being blank. Of course, the government doesn't like leaving blanks (for a variety of reasons), so they put something in there to note that it is intentionally blank.

My Wife is the head team physician for an NHL hockey team affiliate. We had one of our all-star players - who has been playing in the country now for at least 5 years - just got married in December to a lovely (American) woman. He's going through the green card process to become a citizen but he still had to leave the country for something like 60 days to renew his visa and he had a bunch of trouble getting his visa renewed to come back in. Missed the entire preseason and training camp because of it. I understand that its a long and tedious process and I do think that there is room to optimize that process but immigration is such a heated political football that it will never get done.

I recently heard an argument that there is a confounding of libertarian with libertine; libertarians will shoot you if you trespass on their land or rights, libertines insist anyone can go on your property and do whatever they want to you and your family because it is their right. I will add that the surprising number of libertines pretending to be libertarians are really hot on the government forcing compliance with their beliefs.

The Waymo essentially froze once it got to the hotel because some construction was going on in the parking lot and the car didn't know what to do with it, or have the intuition to simply go around it.

I've had 6... I think... eye surgeries. Mostly laser caused by diabetic retinopathy. But I had a vitrectomy done back in 2010 and since then my left eye can see, but I just can't focus it on letters. I can see cars, people, kids, bikes, moose... I just can't read the stupid snellen chart in the DMV with my left eye (my right eye is 20/20 uncorrected). So I have to see my eye doctor every other year to get checked out so that the DMV will keep my license active.
Such a pain in the arse.

Freight from my area has been cheap for 40 years... The only thing that has increased the rates have been the fuel surcharges that have been passed on for the last 20 but the underlying rates are terrible. I have been talking about foreign drivers for decades, telling anyone who'll listen that the industry is lousy with them. It will be interesting to see what will change with the crackdown

"Back in the day" I used to read reports how an incredibly small number of families owned more than 80% of the economy. That was a decade or two ago. I imagine with the cartels and the marxism that situation has only gotten worse. Its my non-statistical guess that the only way to "fix" Mexico would be through a complete overthrow of the government, and those only seem to happen FROM the Marxists and not TO the marxists.

The star in the upper right of the CDL drivers license indicates it is a "Secure ID" issued to "NO NAME GIVEN"
New York Governor Kathy Hochul must be so proud of the morons working in her state government.
Apparently, Texas now requires renewals of Secure ID cards be treated like new issuings, requiring all citizenship documents.

Locally, I don't understand how I know of people (US citizens) marrying undocumented immigrants - some with histories of criminal behavior in the US - and there are little to no barriers in such unions and then them getting health insurance, drivers licenses, etc. through the spousal connection. Further, if and when the criminals are caught, they're entitled to the best of care and legal consideration, and the spouse get no punishment.

Why give me a vehicle that can go 130 mph and only allow me to go 65mph .
Seriously it has to do with the maximum safe speed for the vehicle - which is 1/2 its top speed. Since some roads in TX have an 85 mph speed limit - we see new cars which have a top speed of 170. A car that is safe at 85 has to be much better built than a car with a maximum safe speed of 60 - better brakes, better tires, better handling.

They have to be trained by previous data.
That means they'll always eventually encounter something they haven't been trained on and won't have a clue how to do it or the ability to figure it out on their own.
There's video out there of robot traffic jams in Amazon warehouses because two or three robots come close to each other and keep moving in each other's way trying to get around the other.
AI is great for the routine and predictable, but at this point in time they are terrible for jobs that require actually thinking through a problem and solving it without humans aiding them.
