43 Boston Harbor
Charles Manger

From the Smithsonian -
Smithsonian American Art Museum
Luce Foundation Center
3rd Floor
9B

"In this painting of Boston Harbor in the 1860s, a ship carrying a passenger sits in the center, while an assortment of seafaring vessels dots the hazy horizon. In the foreground, birds fly low among waves that reflect the colors of the sky. Manger’s use of glowing light and smooth brushstrokes was a popular approach among American landscape painters at the time. This work was completed around the time of the American Civil War when Boston Harbor served as a training camp and coastal defense for the Union army."

Very nice opening to the week, and we're blessed to see this painting online for we cannot see it at the Smithsonian because of the SCHUMER SHUTDOWN.

Thanks

Significant quote:

In around 1908, Thomas Sullivan, a New York tea merchant, started to send samples of tea to his customers in small silken bags. Some assumed that these were supposed to be used in the same way as the metal infusers, by putting the entire bag into the pot, rather than emptying out the contents. It was thus by accident that the tea bag was born!

Album by The Pogues released un 1985 featuring such classics as Sick Bed of Cuchulainn and Sally MacLannane. What kinda fence?

I put in a "Critter Fence" 7.5' deer fence for a garden and it's fantastic. Not exactly ornamental, but easy to put up and not crushingly expensive. The company is a bit schizophrenic with their branding, it's either Critter Fence or Deerbusters or something like that.

In around 1908, Thomas Sullivan, a New York tea merchant, started to send samples of tea to his customers in small silken bags. "It's not entirely clear that there will be a meeting between President [Donald] Trump and Xi Jinping at the end of this month, because Xi Jinping is under a lot of political trouble at home. Lower than that actually. Census Bureau does not take into account non cash welfare benefits like housing, Medicaid, food stamps, etc.

Pennsylvania about a decade ago, reported that the total benefits including cash welfare totaled up to 67k or so for a recipient with children. That sum makes it much harder to get people with limited education, work experience, etc. off the dole and into a job. They lose money by doing so.

They should have had Gillian Anderson be the big bad, instead of a bad Elon Musk clone in her son, and had Jeff Bridges' son involved in the good company.

Weirdly enough, Jared Leto and the witch from Acolyte were the best actors in the cast. The two main AI characters were more human and had more motivations and emotions than the rest of the wooden humans put together!

They almost managed an industrial revolution in the 6th century under the Song dynasty. It really seemed to hinge on a fairly complex and fractured political landscape, good weather and developing trade, and a system of easily accessible credit which in that case was backed originally by warehouse receipts backed by trade goods like silk and iron goods. The Mongols ended that.
Amazingly the European renaissance was started in the Italian states under much the same conditions; the Italians developed credit markets and banking as well to support their international trade.

Reportedly set up "MONTHS AGO."

They will never stop going after him. Trump is in Florida NOW and departs TONIGHT.

"Prior to the President’s return to West Palm Beach, USSS discovered what appeared to be an elevated hunting stand within sight line of the Air Force One landing zone," FBI Dir. Kash Patel told Fox

"No individuals were located at the scene. The FBI has since taken the investigatory lead, flying in resources to collect all evidence from the scene, and deploying our cell phone analytics capabilities."

Comment is ambiguous. From all accounts, the best rock music club scene probably was NYC in the 70's for sheer variety.

Boston itself had two major bands coming out of that town, Boston and the Cars. One was a fake touring band, the other was a genuine bridge between New Wave and older guitar rock styles primarily due to effective use of synths.

Posted by: Pudinhead at October 20, 2025 11:20 AM (jFCkp)

346 The tariff IS a tax on whoever is the last person to pay for a product. (Hint: it's consumers).[/i[

Only if the tariff is globally imposed, otherwise actual laws of economics apply and the producers under tariff still have to operate in a competitive economy. Some low margin stuff like cables and cheap stuff from China will stay low because they are competing and can't afford to lose the market, or they may go out of that line of business. The producers may hike prices on other stuff, too, and that might bring the prices higher, but this is offset by making the profit in competing worth expanding into the area.
It is not a simple "tariffs make the world more expensive" though they do act like taxes. It does make the taxing a bit more even handed though, and easier to collect.
