Gun Thread: Pre-TXMoMe X Edition!

101225 TX MoMe X image scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the Pre-Texas Mome Edition? I am back home and frantically preparing for the TXMoMe as I write this, so again, apologies for the abbreviated content.

Sunday Update: On the road, see some of all y'all soon!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals

Last chance to practice your fundamentals before Texas! This week we look at grip and trigger mechanics, or is it grip and sight alignment?

FUNdamentals of MoMe'n: TXMoMe X

101225 hello-moron scaled.jpg

10/12/25 - No updates this week

Changes to note from prior years:
We are implementing a change regarding the safety briefing and range access this year. The daily mandatory safety briefings are really mandatory now if you plan on shooting each day. Without exception. These will be conducted on the carport at 10am on Friday and 9am on Saturday. Due to the growth of the shooting programs, at the conclusion of the safety briefing you will be asked to sign a liability release form and only then be issued a color coded wrist band for the day. The wrist band is your ticket onto the ranges. No wrist band, no range access. If you visit the bar during the day, you remove the wrist band. Simple.

For those who miss the mandatory briefings in the morning, we will attempt to accommodate with a secondary briefing sometime after lunch for late arrivals to sign the release and be issued a wrist band for that day.

The time has come to begin the discussion of the upcoming TXMoMe in Corsicana, TX on October 17-18. This is the TENTH annual TXMoMe, or Conservative Burning Man as it's popularly known, and it promises to be a doozy. If you're in either the Northern or Southern Hemisphere of the Planet of the Earth, contact Ben Had for details on attending. The dates and email links for all MoMes are always helpfully included on the blog's main page, left sidebar.

What started years ago as a small get-together and informal plinking session lasting a couple of hours has matured into a full scale jamboree-hootenanny including a program of shooting activities for both handguns and rifles over two days. I have to thank Ben Had, Cow Horse Queen and RancherBob for making this whole thing happen and providing the opportunity for the shooting to comprise such a significant portion of the event.

But wait! There's more! Combine that with world class food and drink, and the even world classier company of your fellow Morons, and you have a weekend that legends are made of. For those not inclined to shoot (?), there are non-stop opportunities to relax in the shade of the carport or under a handy nearby tree with a beverage and visit with your online pals to your hearts content, which is really what the whole damn thing is about in the first place..

Allow me to be serious for a minute. I have said this probably two hundred and fifty-seven times now. These gatherings are a really good time, and I know of no one who expresses regret after having attended one. Actually it goes beyond that. It's not just a weekend of laughs, it's an opportunity to connect with lots of like-minded people and create lasting friendships and priceless memories. No kidding. Think that's hyperbole? It snot. Would your ol' pal Weasel lie to you? Well, yes he would, but not about this. TXMoMe veterans will attest to the funness and completely laid-back nature of the event. Don't be a dork, do yourself a favor and get yo' ass to Texas!

TXMoMe veterans: please jump into the comments to encourage the scairdy-cats to join in the fun! What was your first MoMe like? What were you expecting? Were you surprised? Did you have a great time?

I also want to reiterate the TXMoMe is not a gun thing with some socializing attached, but rather is a social thing with some shooting attached. If you aren't a shooter, I guarantee you will not feel out of place and will have a great time. No fooling!

Are all y'all getting excited? Weasel are!!

9 No range report.

But I have been eyeing a couple of acquisitions at the beginning of next year.
The NYPD finally got around to renewing my rifle/shotgun permit (still waiting on handgun license), so I am thinking of buying a new rifle setup. It will hopefully be revealed at the mini MoMe in NH. Of course I will send pictures and a write-up the Weasel.

I am also looking at getting a cheap gun safe as NYC is pushing for that now a days.

Its a place larger than the surface of the moon, you don't even see the shooting. If you don't want to shoot there will probably be 60 people hanging under this epic constructed large breeze way that aren't shooting and doing what they do here, only in person WITH food and drinks. I hate calling it a car port. In my old line of work it would be called a breezeway. A roof between 2 buildings, but this place is more like an epic covered patio. Its really not something you want to miss. I drive from so far east that I almost have to start in a submarine, so if you're within a few states away don't be lazy bastards and make the trip. The GI M4 "waffle stock" is a lot cheaper than the CAR-15 Vietnam era stock. I bought a GI "waffle stock for only $20. A surplus period CAR-15 stock will go for at least at couple hundred bucks. If you've got the $$, AIM Surplus has police trade in AR-15A3s for $799.95. You'll have to provide the carry handle and CAR-15 stock.

175 Sat in a deer stand Saturday morning and watched a nice fat 6 point follow a nice plump doe across the soybean field in front of me. My Hawken (cap lock) misfired twice before they strolled out of range. Cap #3 did the trick for a ballistic unload.

Have a great week everyone and thank you Weasel.

177 So the fun of being 55 has caught up with my shooting. I've developed a bad case of Glock knuckle where arthritis in my middle right finger is just telling me every time how much it hates certain grip and trigger guards.

Ouch. I am having trouble with my G20, 21 and 30. Which is a damn shame.

I did test out and verified that my XD9 and CZ P-07 and PSA Microdagger do not have this issue. So I do have carry options and all three are more than accurate.

Still. Sucks yo.

I was pleased to see how accurate the XD9 and the P-07 were even with iron sights.

260 Had to drive back to Mom's house, so I'm still catching up --is the Best Western closed? Because they took my reservation...am I being set up for a horror movie?
Posted by: Dash my lace wigs! at October 12, 2025 09:13 PM

Nobody's yet answered your question, so I will. No, the Best Western should be fine. When I attempted to get a reservation at the Hampton Inn & Suites, I could not because the hotel was undergoing renovations. So, I went across the street to the Holiday Inn Express. It's behind the Sonic rather than behind the Waffle House.

Hah!

25 of the 26 letters can be silent in English, so that's the upper bound for your joke. But I don't know if all of them can start a word silently, so it's probably fewer than 25.

I did a whole alphabet like that, once, although I had to make a couple of extensions to one I found on-line. There are, as I recall, two letters that aren't silent, or can't don't produce a deceptive sound, (think "X as in Xerxes" which most people would think had a "Z") at the beginning of a word. One of them is "R", and I chose a different tack, using a word with a common homophone that started with a different letter, like "R as in Rap" which goes along with the "W as in wrap".

RobWords had a video out this week on the NATO spelling alphabet, so I've been meaning to post the one I came up with as a comment to that video, and I can't find the dang thing. It might be on this one USB hard drive. I hope. I'll know if I can ever find it.

She is delusional. Apparently she has some odd and completely irrational idea that the Mariners are a good baseball team.

it's sad, really.

279 Well, I wouldn’t know what a good baseball team looks like, seeing as I’ve been a Mariners fan since forever.

But, we seem to still be playing and a lot of teams aren’t.

Meh. I’m just a dumb girl though.
