Top Story

  • Intel has taken the wraps off Panther Lake, its new laptop processor family due in January. (Tom's Hardware)

A full announcement is expected at CES and general availability by the end of the January.

It includes new performance and efficiency cores, a low power core that isn't described in detail yet, and a new Xe3 graphics engine that provides a preview of the upcoming Celestial discrete GPUs.

Also, while Lunar Lake was one size fits all, there are three different versions of Panther Lake:

The cheapest version has four P cores and four LP cores, four Xe3 graphics cores, supports soldered or socketed RAM, and has eight PCIe 4.0 and four PCIe 5.0 lanes.

The version for high-end laptops with dedicated graphics has four P cores, eight E cores, four LP cores, four Xe3 graphics cores, supports soldered or socketed RAM, and has eight PCIe 4.0 and twelve PCIe 5.0 lanes.

And finally a model for fast laptops without dedicated graphics has four P cores, eight E cores, four LP cores, twelve Xe3 graphics cores, supports soldered RAM only, and has eight PCIe 4.0 and four PCIe 5.0 lanes.

So you has to pick and choose. There is no model that gives you everything.

Though potentially the last of these can support CAMM2 modules to allow for expandable LPDDR5X RAM, and four lanes of PCIe 5.0 is enough to drive a mid-range laptop GPU.

It's also supposed to user 30% less power than Lunar Lake thanks to the move from a 3nm to 1.8nm process.

58 Evening and morning, AoSHQ satellites throughout the system and beyond! 'Tis Friday, the consummation devoutly to be wished.

Last night I went out to the pipe trunk show at the local pipe/cigar shop. There were beautiful pipes for sale by three or four manufacturers, but most of them were priced much higher than I usually am willing to spend. Say, 2.5x to 3x higher. So I hung out, had some crackers and cheese, smoked a couple of different blends offered by attendees, and let it go at that.

So, whassup?

It's no secret that Donald Trump wants a Nobel Peace Prize. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is among a handful of world leaders who have nominated the US president to the award committee in Norway.

But as we've reported earlier, Trump may have to wait a little while longer as nominations for this year's title closed in January, just as his second term in the Oval Office was getting going.

I don't see any reason to be upset at PDJT not getting the Scandi bauble.

1) Whether he's rewarded or not neither enhances nor diminishes his accomplishments.

2) The Nobel Peace Prize is a joke anyway. When it goes to the likes of Carter, Gore and Obama, you know it's been completely discredited.

No one has more bad things to say about NYC than me. However, they may be right. With the epidemic of people going postal, as we old folks say, it has not escaped notice that the social media companies built an outrage machine. I'd bet most of the crazy shit we see is people addicted to social media and literally overdosing on outrage. Shouldn't be an issue. Just keep up with that and any security program you have. Mind you, a lot of companies will simply stop supporting Win10 so you may have to make other plans.

You'll need an anti-virus also. Be aware that Malware Bytes often interacts poorly with anti-virus (they scan files because the other one scanned the file so it wastes a lot of resources).

Be aware that, eventually, things like web browsers will stop supporting Win10 and, eventually, web pages will go wonky.

All that being said, yes... you can stay on Win10. There are people who still use Win7.

Hola!

I had to step out of an on-line meeting to "reach a consensus on a set up plan" for the halls where we will stage our annual show next month. An "amiable" blowhard with a couple of years' experience under his belt sought to throw out a decade's worth of experience of how to accomplish e task within our time limits in favor of his own "well considered and thought out revision" that catered to a coterie of whiners who insisted that their area's needs were paramount. His whole argument hinged on him asserting time and again that "surely we can agree that an area with fewer items to be put in place will be completed long before the other area with more items to be put in place". It was dishonest all the way down and I had to step out several times because I was getting enraged by that dishonesty.
