Mondays.

Goose is so proud of her eggs.

A pigeon sandwich.

Work smarter not harder.

Tarantulas are the cats of the spider world. I realize this makes neither species more popular.

Those dumb animals about the lion with the guy from Ferris Buehler.

This dog is Reflex-Maxxing to get chicks.

Summer fun.

Little skitterbugs.

Dog shows his friend, the cow, his favorite toy. The cow don't care.

66 Hey again, everybody.

I don't really have too much of a problem with people who want to, er, 'not honor' Columbus himself. IMHO and from what I've read, his mission wasn't really about peace, goodwill, or any of that stuff. It was about trade, pure and simple, and Columbus wanted to be rich, revered and famous.

Also, he wasn't the first explorer of the Americas. We all know about Amerigo Vespucci, and if Columbus's ships had sunk in the middle of the Atlantic, I'm sure there were many others ready to take his place.

If Chris were around today, IMHO he'd have a (most likely not very popular) podcast and be trying to get attention on social media.

I *do* have a problem with idjits like Kamala and Liz Warren who can't be bothered to understand that this continent was worth exploring, for all the misdeeds and mistakes of the first settlers.

112 AOP, true.

The impression I have is that Cortez was a much nastier piece of work than Columbus. Chris excused his excesses by saying "Hey, at least I'm bringing them Catholicism and saving their souls!"

Cortez OTOH didn't appear to GAF and killed the Aztecs (who needed it btw) because they were in the way and deadly, not to save native lives.

134 Per the photo above - they have Huy Fong sriracha on the table. It's a great product. It originated in L.A.'s Chinatown, and my family has used it since I was a little kid, after it found its way into Chinatowns throughout the Western US from their expanded facility in Rosemead, CA.

But, though the facility was big enough, and the family had put down roots in Rosemead, they were forced out of there after a bitter civil suit, and now make their amazing product in Irwindale, CA instead.

"Why would this happen," you might ask, "why would Rosemead want rid of these crafty, slant-eyed entrepeneurs and their delicious sauce?"

Well, it wasn't because Rosemead natives wanted them gone. It was an industrial district, and Huy Fong was a good employer there.

It was because hipsters moved in, and they didn't like the spicy smell surrounding their fair-trade, gender-neutral art district they were Handcrafting With Alley-to-Table Love in Rosemead, so Huy Fong had to go - along with the rest of Rosemead's industry.

I always think of this little vignette when I think of what my fellow millennials did to this country.

Piri Reis claimed to have used Portuguese and Columbus' maps, but it doesn't really explain the far south and possible Antarctica, since one was unknown and the other was pretty sketchy. Arguing that one source was 40,000 years old to show an ice free Antarctica is pretty hard to swallow though.

I think the last time Antarctica was completely ice free was about 35 million years ago.

However, it looks like there was some substantial melting as last as the HCO, the Holocene Climate optimum, maybe around 8 - 6K years ago. The exact timing of all that is not known very well, but Antarctica did have much less ice than today in the early Holocene.

The Flying Crowbar. A hypersonic drone powered by an unshielded nuclear ramjet. The original design called for it to scatter out A-bombs, but for Gaza, simply having it cruise the length of Gaza, to and fro, to and fro, until its reactor shut down, would be all it takes.

If the Drake passage were blocked, it would interrupt the current around Antarctica which keeps it cold. I have wondered if glaciation would have closed the passage at the height of the Older Dryas, which would have allowed a number of things, from a partially warming Antarctica and the possibility of ocean travel from Australasia to South America along the pack ice.

As far as life goes, we have a sample of exactly 1 data point: Erf.

However, the assumptions are life anywhere will probably be a lot like life here, and DNA will likely be a very basic component.

Life could be really different of course, some utterly alien, unknown chemistry, but the assumption is "life as we know it".

313 >> , it would have been sunk in the meltwater pulse at the end of the Younger Dryas, when the oceans rose with melting glaciers.

He thinks it's far more than rising sea level with the meltwater. When the weight of the ice sheet is removed, the crust rebounds a bit, isostatic adjustment, which gets complicated. You've got this big rotating ball of mass, with various mass distributions. Move the mass around, and the shape will change to get back in equilibrium

Now, what if there was a weak spot somewhere. Rather than a smooth lowering elsewhere to compensate for the rising here, you get a weak spot that all the sudden sinks.

He thinks that happened in the Azores.

Putting "Indigenous Peoples' Day" there instead is an insult orders of magnitude worse than being given a participation trophy for just showing up. Because those "Indigenous Peoples" didn't even show up, they were and remained ignorant of the rest of the world for generations. Everybody else knew the various continents and nations and how to get there. Columbus brought knowledge of the Americas back, where the new world was, and how to get there. And many nations did. The "Indigenous Peoples" were not building ships and setting sail for rum, slaves, spices, and other goods.

What blew my mind is isostatic adjustment works backwards to what you'd think in the effect on the earth's moment of inertia.

At first naive blush, you'd think that melting ice from the poles and moving the mass to the closer to the equator would increase the inertia and the earth would slow down.

It does initially, but as the thing adjustments, the equilibrium goes the other way. Ice at the poles results in a *higher* moment of inertia than an ice free earth.

The isostatic adjustment of melting ice results in a lower moment of inertia eventually. So, counterintuitively, ice caps cause a more oblate shape than no ice caps.

371 Columbus spent years trying to persuade Isabella of Castille to fund his expedition. Writing his briefs to the Spanish court in whatever Genoese dialect of Italian existed at the time wouldn’t have aided his cause. Catalan for her majesty, of course!
Posted by: NemoMeImpuneLacessit at October 13, 2025 10:02 PM (ZVgZ4)

ISTR that the court language of the Aragonese court was Catalan, but Isabella only spoke Castilian and Latin.
However, I was talking about his personal papers, not his petitions to various courts

373 I have to go back and watch that NYC 1960s in Color vid.

Evening, all. Somebody stole Siberian kitten Dagny and swapped in a ringer!

Well, not really. But I lifted her off the table and placed her on my lap -- and she stayed, glad to have her belly rubbed and fur ruffled, for nearly twenty minutes. The first lap time in 3.5 years! I told Linda, "Somebody swapped out my cat for a lookalike. Maybe this is her mother Sofia."

She was just waiting to get to know you before any long-term commitments like belly rubbing.

Now you need to break out a laser pointer and some catnip and after some exercise and fun she'll love you forever.

404 Now, the wildest theory is the Exothermic Core-Mantle Decoupling – Dzhanibekov Oscillation (ECDO) Theory

it says the core will become uncoupled from the mantle. allowing the Earth to wobble wildly and change orientation, before flipping back.
This also argues from archeological evidence that this has happened before.
