Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - October 8, 2025 [Autumn Rex]

20251007-20251006-IMG_20251006_145037467.jpg

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety.

Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another random assortment of interweb debris. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors.

Man caught on video stealing beloved dinosaur statue from LA gas station

A man was caught on surveillance video stealing a large dinosaur from a gas station in Brentwood.

The incident happened Saturday, Sept. 27 at a Sinclair gas station on 13060 San Vicente Blvd.

Video shows the man walking towards the green Apatosaurus and appears to unscrew it from the ground. He walks away then returns with a white tarp or blanket over his shoulder.

As he covers the dinosaur, a white pickup truck then pulls up besides him. The man then places the dinosaur into the pickup and gets into the passenger side as the vehicle drives off.

Update: Beloved dinosaur statue returned to LA gas station

A Sinclair gas station owner in Los Angeles is breathing a sigh of relief after a beloved fiberglass dinosaur statue was returned after being stolen late last month.

It's a crime that was so shocking, the owner said people were crying and even leaving flowers at the spot Claire the dinosaur stood.

The green Apatosaurus, named Claire, was returned after being stolen over a week ago. The dinosaur was covered in a blanket along with a note that read, "Sorry for stealing Claire! Please do not press charges!"

Five random bits of unverified (by me) Texas trivia found on the interweb:

1) El Paso is closer to California than to Dallas

2) The King Ranch in South Texas is larger than Rhode Island.

3) Dr Pepper was invented in Waco in 1885. There is no period in Dr Pepper.

4) The name "Texas" comes from the Hasini Indian word "tejas" meaning "friends." Tejas is NOT Spanish for Texas.

5) The first word spoken from the moon, July 20, 1969, was "Houston," but the NASA Space Center was actually in Clear Lake City at the time - just outside Houston limits. Clear Lake City was annexed by Houston in 1977.

We Finally Know How The Lights Switched on at The Dawn of Time

According to data from the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes, the origins of the free-flying photons in the early cosmic dawn were small dwarf galaxies that flared to life, clearing the fog of murky hydrogen that filled intergalactic space. A paper about the research was published in February 2024.

"This discovery unveils the crucial role played by ultra-faint galaxies in the early Universe's evolution," said astrophysicist Iryna Chemerynska of the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris.

Somehow, TRex made it this far thought life without seeing the early days of Snoopy's story. Shame, shame.

How the Beloved "Peanuts" Found Its Way to Define the Modern Comic Strip

In 1950, Schulz took a somewhat spiffed-up "Li'l Folks" to United Feature Syndicate for nationwide distribution. The group agreed to publish the strip, with one stipulation: The name had to change. "Li'l Folks" was deemed too similar to multiple existing newspaper strips, so the syndicate rebranded it "Peanuts," a reference to the peanut gallery on the "Howdy Doody Show," where boisterous little children sat. Though Schulz never liked the name and would harbor no small resentment of it for decades, the cartoonist nurtured "Peanuts" into one of the most successful comic strips in history.

8 So it's been a minute since a health update, so I figured I would catch everyone up on what's been going on lately.

As most of you know, about a month ago I was in the hospital for the better part of a week due to what turned out to be a bad stomach virus. While in the hospital, an abdominal CT Scan was performed to rule out anything more serious. We were somewhat bemused when no mention was made of the tumors in my liver, but we figured they weren't looking for that.

When I saw the oncologist 2 weeks ago, he was somewhat confused as well, so he asked for more information from the hospital's radiology department.

We saw the oncologist again today (scheduled appointment), and he showed us the images that he was sent. There is lots of calcification (indicating tumor cell death) where the smaller tumors had been, but he didn't see any sign of the small tumors anywhere. The area where the largest (8 cm) tumor was now shows lots of calcification and a significant amount of tumor shrinkage.

Posted by: Teresa in Fort Worth, Plucky Comic Relief, AoS Ladies Brigade - Eat the Cheesecake, Buy the Yarn. at October 08, 2025 10:03 PM (SRRAx)

9 The largest tumor has now shrunk to 3.9 cm in diameter. The amazing thing about that is that while a tumor of 8 cm has an approximate volume of 268 cubic centimeters, a tumor of 3.9 cm only has an approximate volume of 31 cubic centimeters.

What means is that in the time that I have been on this medication (about 8 months), my largest tumor has shrunk by almost 90%!!! 🥳🎊🥳🎊🥳

My next CT scan is scheduled for November 3rd, at which time we are pretty sure the oncological surgeon will be discussing surgery to remove the lobe of the liver where the tumor is located. Barring surgical complications, this should give me more time with friends and family.

While we don't know what the timeline might be, the fewer cancer cells that are in my body (there is no way for surgery to remove every cancer cell), the longer it will take for the cancer to return.

Happily, it looks like I will get to spend Christmas with family at least one more year, if not more. Thanks to EVERYONE who has been praying on my behalf - they are definitely working! As always, we will keep everyone informed as we go along 😊♥️🎄

29 Hey everybody! Hey ONT!

Autumn Rex, thanks for the Peanuts link. If there is one thing I'm a fanatic about (besides good pineapple-less pizza), it's Peanuts and Charles Schulz.

It's an interesting fact that if you actually look at the early Peanuts strips from 1950 to about 1955, it wasn't made clear whose dog Snoopy was. Sometimes he seemed to be just a neighborhood stray puppy.

It wasn't until sometime in the mid-1950s that Schulz finally made clear, Snoopy is/was Charlie Brown's dog.

Schulz also did some topical humor in the 1950s, including a great Sunday strip where Charlie Brown wants to buy a comic book from his nearest liquor store. When he finally finds them, it's full of books with titles like "Strike," "Gore," "Maim," "Terror," and "Kill," and a title on the display: "For The Kiddies."

47 Dolly Parton is one of the greatest folks ever. I hope she never dies.

When I was at college, a young coed appeared in my sophomore year. She had large br**sts, blonde hair that went out to the sides, a southern twang, and was one of the sweetest people I ever met. "Yew talk funny!" she told me.

Anyway, I nicknamed her Dolly Parton, which she apparently didn't like. It was always meant to be affectionate, which she eventually understood.

She left after one year. It became one of those "I always wonder" bits. I hope she's happy, content, and has bustling grandkids.

Dammit Ford! Reminds me of a time back in middle school when BMX Plus (or maybe BMX Action) had a drawing contest. I made an awesome drawing that might have won, but definitely would have been published. Before mailing it in, I showed my art teacher. There was a gathering of several other students hovering around his desk for the reveal. He said man, Lemmiwinks, you have really outdone yourself, I can't believe you are a 6th grader.... BTW you mispelled....

You can't understand how deflated I was. I didn't send it in and I couldn't change it cuz it was inked. One of the cutest girls in the school asked me if she could have it. Of course I gave it to her (not like that pervs)

Wiki - House at Pooh Corner (song)

"House at Pooh Corner" is a song written by Kenny Loggins, based on the children's book of the same name. It was first performed by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on their 1970 album Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy. [A great album, and even though I didn't care about the book or movie, was where/when I really fell for this sweet song.]

…Originally Disney would not allow Loggins to record the song, claiming copyright infringement. At the time Loggins was dating the daughter of Donn Tatum, the CEO of the Walt Disney Company. She arranged a meeting between Loggins and her father, who gave the okay for the song to be recorded.

…The song was later recorded by Loggins and Messina themselves on their debut album Sittin' In, released in November 1971

Wiki - Return to Pooh Corner [album]

…the eighth studio and first children's album by American singer-songwriter Kenny Loggins.

220 Well, I successfully fixed a big Quantum LED maglite. It was getting flaky, and finally quit working altogether. Finally figured out the problem. The battery carrier has little spring-loaded contact buttons on each end. The switch, which is in the cap cap, is retained in the end cap by a spanner nut. Thickness of said spanner nut is about equal to the height of the spring-loaded contacts at full extension. They just could reach the contact plate for the switch anymore. Put a drop of solder on each button, problem solved. For a while, anyway.

The NYTimes used to have a weekly item listing restaurant violations. My friend worked downtown and one of the restaurants listed one time was a Chinese restaurant his office often ordered from.

The citation was for having 'cats in the freezer'.

His office was horrified. My friend, being the shit he was, asked them if they liked the food? Did they get sick? No? So he ordered from them again. No one else ordered, though.

Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”[a] says the Lord. 20 On the contrary:

Posted by: Captain Obvious, Laird o' the Sea at October 08, 2025 11:45 PM (WvZaB)

When I was an oblivious hippie college coed I wore my hair in two braids, apparently appropriating from Native Americans. My hair was to my waist. Sometimes this is how I wore it and did not care what others thought. I yam who I yam.

Of course, in hospital nursing you either had to have short hair or wear it up. I wore mine up, and once I got my cap I was rocking that look.

Like the military, we got a stripe for junior and senior year so random people could tell what level we were. It was cool and I thought it a pity to end caps for nurses, altho I am glad our school did not have those hankie types. Our velvet stripes were on the side vs across the cap, as I am sure this is riveting and need to go to bed.

I am sure to save oil Greta cuts her own hair with pinking scissors or a rusty knife she found and repurposed. Or the top of a tuna can.

Stagg Chili without beans still lists beef as the first ingredient (beef broth is the second).

No soy, oats, or (god forbid) carrots.

372 I get pretty dang irritated about the doc title. It is for MD's in my little world.

Once I was working in the newborn nursery and a father came to get his baby. I said Mr. whatever and he rudely said DOCTOR. He was a dentist. I should have said I am NURSE, you dikhead, but I refrained. How freaking weird people are!

I refrain from doing a whole lot, which must mean I am sort of sane vs homeless insane people barking or liberals.Today I refrained from telling a rude and ignorant woman, as she loudly complained of a medical receptionist being rude (she wasn't), to look in the mirror. Address an MD as "Doctor" when in a medical setting, a dentist (DDS) as "Doctor" when in the dentist's office, and a college professor as "Doctor" when engaging with him/her at a college.

Some years later when she finished the 4 year she did the graduation. I asked if she was going to do pictures, hang out, etc. She says no, not really, maybe talked to a few people and we left. Years later when she got the masters she went to the ceremony, gets her diploma, doesn't say shit, she walks to the car, pulls off the gown, rolls it into a ball and tosses it in the trunk and says lets get the hell out of here. 417 @382...my blonde advice is to not think so hard. I could die tonight and feel I have had a great time.

God made you with love. We are all here for a purpose. Sometimes just a moment of kindness and a smile. Or, depending if they are Antifa, I might run you over with a smile.

On days I produce nothing due to a zombie state or laziness of retirement, I still think I am awesome. Which is possibly odd in itself, but I don't think deeply about theology and accept God's Word since toddlerhood.

My motto is simple: Find Joy. Look for it in small things and it becomes a habit. Laugh often and loudly.

Thinking deeply, say finding 'x' annoys me. If I am annoyed I move on. I am apparently awesomely annoyed sometimes but it is brief.

I lived through deep grief at 20yrs old and losing the first love I met within four months due to a rare cancer.

A year later I met my future husband. I was super busy living life with college, and had no choice but to continue, but for awhile it was horrific. Now I see that as a blessing for leading me to the real love of my life. Sometimes, not all the time, you can see good things come from bad.

This thinking is giving me a headache. Blows kisses.

I see the difference in *relative* text size. The text in the grey boxes in bigger relative to the size of the grey box. The word wrap makes the lines shorter.

After yesterday, on Chrome, that relative size is the same as the desktop Chrome. It's a relative font size issue somehow.

I think the senior Obama was a non-entity. May have been a Commie; which was very much in fashion for African "students" in the '60's. I think it went down like this: he was muddling through college, on track to failing the year. FMD gets Stanley Ann Dunham knocked up, an abortion cannot be procured in time, so FMD tells BHO Senior that if he marries Stanley Ann, and acknowledges the child as his, he gets a guaranteed pass from the university, and no child support obligations. But he has to hot-foot it back to Kenya with the ink still wet on his his diploma.

454 mikeski, Hold Me Now is one of the all-time great songs of any genre.

I call them "ketchup songs." You know how when you go to almost any restaurant, there's ketchup on the table? Sort of like that with music. Any decent personal music collection will include that song. :-)

Other ketchup songs IMHO:

- Cherish, The Association
- Lovesong, The Cure
- Jailhouse Rock, Elvis
- any number of songs by Rolling Stones

etc etc etc

https://is.gd/GWVplS

Solomon Linda, South African singer, 1939 recording. It was "Mbube", which is Zulu for "lion".

The story was he was a singer at some joint, and just got to riffing on that, and recorded it later.

Ah, yes. I am listening to Marty, she's in the background & I pay no attention to her.

I once read she slept with all the band but Marty. He didn't like her, either, and she got the message. I reckon she was a ho.

Miracles is my favorite song on that album. And the year I needed one. 1976 was better, except for the roller coaster of my bf/husband's seasonal need to break up with me for no reason as we were not arguing or having issues. Twenty-two is young for a cassanova, not my problem as I was the same age; and also had my act together.

When you are the last of a herd of many girlfriends it takes time for a 22yr old dude to realize what he has (this is how I figured it after he got his act together). It's all been fine since. He "thinks" he had over 20 girlfriends from HS to college.

The songlist on my phone depends on my mood. Sometimes my neighbors probably hate me if I'm dancing on the deck, but I simply don't care.

529 At 2:50 in, note the background soprano. I thought that was an instrument, and not a voice at first.

--------------

Some years ago, on a highway, Christmas eve I push a button on the radio and it's a classical piece, full orchestra with a chorus and it's beautiful and there are three women sopranos, maybe contra alto and they are over the top (mid section climax), hitting high notes hard. It could have been Stan Kenton's or Woody Herman's dream trumpet section. It was tremendous.

I've listened and looked and never found it. What a loss.

My life has background music, too.

Counterintuitively, I can usually clear a song by listening to it a few times. Maybe singing along, if I'm far enough away from other people to prevent any restraining orders.

Or, as others here have said, by listening to something even earwormier.

That is so a word. No red underlines, computer.

True. I used to do it in one shot, but now we break it up. We also take a different route thats waaay nicer. I used to take 81 through virginia but thats the bataan death march. Way too many trucks, way too slow, way too long. Now I shoot across PA into ohio and drop down through kentucky. Way better.

Doof sent me an entire Road Trip music collection of about 4000 songs. Well, the first 100 or so are the theme songs from every TV show of the 70s and 80s.

Some I recognized immediately, others not.

Fun road trip game to see who gets it right first.
