Willowed:
Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. 60 cool degrees here at Stately Poppins Manor, with a high of 80 predicted. Could not sleep at all last night, so finally got up about half an hour ago. Probably the usual 3 hours of work ahead, but it depends on how quickly I can type. 127 days left until I can finally hang up my keyboard, start collecting SS and spend my days doing what I want, even if it's nothing at all. Got my usual Tuesday - wednesday blues. See you all on another thread. Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing (aka Eloquent Depression) at October 07, 2025 04:12 AM (ufSfZ) 4

Google now has two weeks to open Android up to alternate app stores and payment services, and stop even attempting to force this on developers and device makers. ================= What is "this" in that sentence? Posted by: Blonde Morticia at October 07, 2025 04:43 AM (XQ8QH) 11
I'd been typing -noai at the end of search terms to keep AI from chiming in, and it dawned on me lateishly that the minus sign (hyphen) and the word "no" are saying the same thing, so I've started typing -ai at the end of search terms and that seems to be working.

10 What is "this" in that sentence?
Posted by: Blonde Morticia Google places all sorts of restrictions on this (as does Apple). You can't offer an alternate payment method. You can't talk about an alternate payment method. If you do have an alternate payment method, they'll charge you all the fees anyway even though they're not providing the service. The court ruling blows away all of that. ================= What is "this" in that sentence? Posted by: Blonde Morticia at October 07, 2025 04:43 AM (XQ8QH) from the Thurrott article: I'm deducing that "this" [crapola] is the OPPOSITE of the following non-crapola new legal requirements: - Open up the Google Play Store to rival app stores and provide them with its full catalogs of apps and games - Allow developers to use the in-app payment system of their choice - Allow developers to communicate alternative stores and payment systems - Stop punishing those developers who choose to distribute their apps and games in other Android-based app stores - Stop punishing companies that wish to create an app store for Android - Halt bundling requirements for hardware makers that wish to install other app stores on their Android devices - Stop charging developers fees on products and services sold through other stores or payment systems Posted by: m at October 07, 2025 04:52 AM (aURVT) 16

Posted by: JM in Illinois at October 07, 2025 05:12 AM (H4xOd) Apple has always been more restrictive on what is allowed on the App Store than Google was with Play. Apple has submission guidelines and a team that checks the app out for malicious code. I believe Google started doing that more years ago as a result of some bad apps that got through. Most people will still get their apps from the big two, but for more adventurous users there will be options now. The biggest risk is still side loading apps downloaded from the web. I’m guessing you’ll start seeing competing stores downloaded as apps on your phone, and it’s up to the individual whether they want to go to the Steam App Store, or Epic Games Store, Amazon App Store, etc. You’ll probably hear about some janky alternative app stores eventually, and which ones to avoid, as they are infiltrated by hackers and criminals. The Dems have gone full circle.
For decades any mention of “State’s Rights” meant you were a Neo-Confederate White Supremacist who wanted your slaves back, no matter the issue you were talking about. Now it’s perfectly fine to bring up state’s rights when talking about jurisdictions being able to deny federal law enforcement the ability to enforce federal immigration law, and riot in the process. Nearly everything the left does these days are threats backed up by potential violent reactions, or outright rebellion, if they don’t get their way on some unpopular position they’ve taken just to be able to hold onto power. The Democrats haven’t been this desperate since about 1860. Their only play is to create chaos which they can blame on Trump and his fascists. “See what he made us do?” Posted by: SpeakingOf at October 07, 2025 06:07 AM (6ydKt) Posted by: SkyNet at October 07, 2025 06:08 AM (i24o9) 66

As for yours truly on this Tiu's Day: I slept about seven hours and feel like I slept four. I had a convoluted nightmare where I was in a restroom at my old academic employer. The toilet bowl overflowed -- not my fault -- and though I was sure I'd locked the door, people kept wandering in. It was a Saturday afternoon, and somehow I had two dates that night. I planned to call and reschedule one, but couldn't remember her number. Then I got outside, and people were wandering the campus looking for the room where someone famous was speaking. Turned out it was Bill Cosby. As he came in, I pointed out the men's room I'd just left, and warned him to lock the damn door. MP4, I've been part of the SocSec brigade for six months. (I was going to write "SS brigade," but thought better of it.) It takes a little time to decompress. For a while there I was still waking up at the same time every morning as I had for work. Now I've gotten myself to five or five-thirty am so I can work out and/or still have the early morning, the day's best time, to myself.
My only advice is to make sure you have your finances straight *before* you retire, or you will spend the first month wrangling with all that. I'd been on SS and Medicare for some time, so that was set. But I had some other resources to whip into line. All done. Side benefit, if you want: afternoon naps! The Dems must know they can’t win if the best they can do is a few direct action plays in Chicago and Portland.
Things seem to have calmed down in LA after Trump sent in the troops. NYC hasn’t blown up with riots. Boston has had a few incidents. The biggest problem elsewhere has been in Texas in a few cities by nutbag anarchists. They want to get the party started like it’s Floyd 2020 all over again before the midterms next year. I’d say they’re trying to build up to that scenario, by the looks of it. So next summer might be the most dangerous since 2020 if they can find a spark to ignite it all. My only advice is to make sure you have your finances straight *before* you retire, or you will spend the first month wrangling with all that. I'd been on SS and Medicare for some time, so that was set. But I had some other resources to whip into line. All done.
And, depending on your age... - know how you're going to handle the gap between retirement and Medicare. - know how you're going to handle the gaps in Medicare. - know how you're going to fend off the gold diggers when you start pulling in that sweet fed money. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at October 07, 2025 06:36 AM (omVj0) internecine gang-related? Posted by: m at October 07, 2025 *** Almost certainly. The area has single-family homes, and doesn't look too bad when you drive the streets (some of which, not all, are properly paved). It's not a housing project or the kind of modern housing that replaced those in several areas around here. But nowadays, even that is no guarantee of a decent neighborhood. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at October 07, 2025 06:34 AM (omVj0) A distro is like a version of Linux. NixOS, Mint, Fedora... all Linux, all slightly different. The main issue with Linux is that most of the people involved go off on some purity quest and decide to create yet another distro which'll be used by 4 people and useful to 0. I’ll never understand why a Linux distribution team needs to be run by left-wing activist tyrants who must thought-police everybody while complaining about a culture war they started about 15 years ago.
If I ever decide to use Linux I’m going to have to research the team to avoid this crap. NixOS, whatever that is, is the first on my NixList. Posted by: SpeakingOf at October 07, 2025 06:48 AM (6ydKt) 119

The shooting of the "teen" last night near my neighborhood took place at an apartment complex. I think we know what segment of society was involved.
In other news, Decatur Street, the French Quarter street nearest the river, is being torn up (at FEMA's order?) to replace some century-old infrastructure.
