Got a new six month old kitten yesterday. He is beautiful and very friendly. Other cats are not thrilled. Buckley wants to play with him but the kitten is not there yet. He's not terrified of the dog and will just watch him but doesn't hide or run away. Kitten was raise in the country by a hippie family with lots of other animals so had a flea problem. He has some scabs around his face from scratching. He'll be strictly indoors now.

I want to thank everyone for your prayers over the past year as I get treated for breast cancer. They have sustained me, through the Grace of God, through the surgery, chemo and now radiation. I know in my whole being there is no way I could have endured this without everyone's prayers. I have 8 more radiation treatments and then I hope I'm done. There will be lifelong drugs afterwards, but the worst will be over.

Mr. Finn is still at the emergency vet. When I went out at about 6:30 yesterday to let everyone out, he would not get up. It was obvious that he also had urinated on himself. He complained loudly when I got him up with a leash. I got him in last night and right now he's undergoing blood work and an X-ray. While this is not a euthanasia situation (right now), I fear he's on the closing chapter. He's 10 years old (a good age for a Borzoi male) and is obese. Be kind to yourself. Huh. There are studies that estimate between 5%-10% of the population doesn't have that "inner monologue" that narrates thoughts, reflects on experiences or rehearses language silently in the mind. Other studies indicate that between 30%-50% DO regularly experience the inner monologue. That means as much as 70% of the population either lacks it or it is infrequent. Good morning, good people, as TonyPete would say. And good morning to the rest of us too.
I'd appreciate some prayers from the Horde. I'm one of the 5% of gov't workers that make the other 95% look bad, and I'm trying to move to the private sector for various reasons including getting punished by the process for doing the right thing (even if everyone I talk to agrees I did the right thing, the process itself to get formal resolution is punishment right now). I've finally found a good possibility (among the hundreds of "might as well apply and see" so far) to both meet or exceed my pay and do an interesting job that's a good fit for my skills and interests. Had the 2nd-stage interview last week. Waiting to hear back from that and find out if I made it to the final round. Praying that if it's where God wants me, it all goes well and quickly. Praying that wherever God wants me, He make it clear, and the road smooth. Hoping this is it. Posted by: RandomDave at October 04, 2025 08:33 AM (aJQbY) 56

Posted by: SpeakingOf at October 04, 2025 08:22 AM (6ydKt) --- The biggest factor is the weather. If it's warm, people will sit out front with the candy and the whole neighborhood held a block party. We've also had snow and sleet, so much less traffic. The subdivision is closing out a generational turnover as it was built in the 1970s and the original owners are passing away or moving out. I worked a route in some of the old school neighborhoods. Subdivisions built right after World War II. Street names like Patron and Liberty. Not very large houses, not very large yards. 3 or 4 basic designs maybe. But they were houses, and the GI home loans made owning a home possible.
There were still yet a few of the pioneers living sprinkled around. I inferred from the remainder that these were very nice places to live and raise a family and grow. Solid people make the difference. They also had neighborhood grocery stores. The 24 hour handi marts and shopping centers didn’t exist, so small outlets where you could get the staples were pretty common. Posted by: Common Tater at October 04, 2025 09:09 AM (DaCyj) 122

Posted by: naturalfake at October 04, 2025 09:07 AM (iJfKG) --- It's highly localized. This is a big country, after all. This is also nothing new. New York's famous blackout in the 1970s kicked off a wave of looting, but a multiday power outage here over the summer had no such effect. If anything, people reached out to each other more. There's a line from Hurricane Katrina that has stuck with me through the years. A reporter went to the French Quarter and found that the bars had opened their doors and were offering up water to those that needed it and cooking up their food before it spoiled. Sometimes we forget, a “high trust” society isn’t simply one of those nice things to have,
This is not optional, your society will not be sustainable in any way, not for long, without it. A lot of our public national malaise, the “news” dances around this. It’s apparently so obvious no one can see it any longer. It isn’t even discussed. Posted by: Common Tater at October 04, 2025 09:16 AM (Vq1kH) 132
Sadly, Halloween has become prime child predator pickings. Every year we read about an abducted or murdered child around that time of the year. And we're in the sticks. In town it's a damn field-day for p3d0s.
Or was. Not sure how the situation is now with the change in public perceptions and, perhaps increased LE attention. The grandkids will come over and Mamaw will shower them with treats before they go on their own trick or treat with friends in their 'hood (which is mostly pro-Trump rednecks.) Since I trick or treated as a youth, I will ALWAYS give out treats on Halloween. One of those "do unto others as was done onto you" - I can't tell you as a kid how much it sucked when someone obviously didn't give out candy. And if you don't want to give candy, buy a roll of quarters and give out cash. It's the giving and getting a door open that makes a kid happy, less the actual treat. Of course you don’t want to hurt the cattle in the process, that’s bad business. Posted by: Tom Servo at October 04, 2025 09:14 AM (WZaJc) --- That's a very crude way of putting it and not at all how they thought. The question of rulership was bound up in divine legitimacy, and so if you are the rightful king/duke/count, you don't want to take over a desolation. Yet the English in the Hundred Years' War did engage in pillage through their Chevauchees, which were designed to delegitimize French rule because they obviously could not protect their realm. There were rules of a sort, and they generally came from the Bible. If a city resists, you offer it terms. If the terms are rejected and the city falls, it gets no mercy. The notion that there are unbendable laws without any reciprocity is a purely modern phenomenon, and utterly unsupportable in practice. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Posted by: Tom Servo at October 04, 2025 09:27 AM (WZaJc) --- Yeah, and his system collapse how quickly after he died? As I've gotten older, I'm more convinced that much of the hate against the nobility is completely fabricated by a greedy and envious middle class. "Prima Noctem" is a fraud, total fabrication. Zero contemporary evidence. The nobility had extensive obligations to their estates and were required to provide justice and enforce the laws. Far from being idle, they had an obligation to grow their holdings and their people. It's interesting that when the franchise was extended to non-propertied people, the servants and tenant farmers voted heavily for the Tories because the alternative was living in a row house in a factory town. Having "your people" starve was a disgrace to the family name. And of course in time of war, one was supposed to sacrifice sons for king and country. Some years ago in a gaming forum, there was a discussion of officers vs enlisted in real life and a Brit remarked that his company commander was of noble birth, from a family that had served in the Army since the days of Marlborough.
He said that this gave the enlisted a tremendous trust him, because they knew that he would die a hideous death rather than stain the family honour. He's was also highly capable, no doubt having been taught the basics of the family business since birth. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at October 04, 2025 09:44 AM (ZOv7s) 185

Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd Agree, A. H. A lot of folks here describe a coming "new feudalism" as if it were a completely bad thing. But feudalism was a system of reciprocal rights and obligations involving those at the top as well as those at the bottom. Even in the Age of Absolutism, the monarch felt answerable to God for his/her governance. Today's elites have no responsibilities to the common people, and certainly no accountability to God. The bane of all dictatorships, good and bad. Marshall Tito had the same problem, succession almost never works. I would argue that high on the minds of all of our Founders, who were very knowledgeable of what to them was fairly recent history, was how to redo Cromwell’s revolution without making all the mistakes that caused it to fail the first time. In mind of your writing, I find Cromwell and Franco to be very analogous leaders. Except of course for the Very Catholic and the Very Puritan contrast between then. -------- Nope. You're thinking as an Anglo-speaker does. Merchant classes and lesser nobles have pulled off successful revolts against the monarchy in Britain and America, but for everyone else, it's rampaging peasantry, or quickly descends into that. Those revolts also usually failed, for a very long time. This is because of serfdom, which began dwindling away in Britain centuries before it did everywhere else. People hate being serfs. You can keep them in serfdom. You can argue it's better for them, or that it's the natural state of affairs. But they resent it. And eventually they'll break out of it. It's also the old "compared to what" thing. The bourgeoisie is much less likely to revolt when there's a massive, restive underclass they're afraid to descend into or be killed by. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at October 04, 2025 09:56 AM (BI5O2) --- The abolition of monarchy gave us world wars, far more pitiless than anything short of the Thirty Years' war. Even the wars of Napoleon were less destructive. That's because democracy requires the people to be worked into a frenzy, and once activated, the bloodlust cannot easily be sated. Under monarchy, wars are frequent, but limited, and the costs borne by the Crown, armies made up of riff-raff, and no one particularly invested in the outcome. Oooh, who shall be the King of Spain, that inbred or the other inbred? Negotiated settlements all the way down. Serfdom and class arrangements were highly localized. This isn't a case of the Continent vs England. The Netherlands was not Prussia, was not Hungary, was not Poland was not Russia was not one of the Italian states. What is the practical difference between sending a share of your harvest to the tax collector vs landlord?
------- Protracted, benighted immiseration of whole nations as a stultifying lack of property ownership and individual liberty hampers forward progress so severely that it takes nearly a millennium for them to reach the level of achievement they had reached in the world formed by the mighty Republic and Empire that preceded them? And which achievement only occurred as those nations slowly but surely sloughed off their kings? But that's just the practical things. There's also the god-given self-determination and presumption of human equality that kings snatch away from their subjects. If longevity is your only criterion, then sure, I guess monarchy is awesome. If there are any other criteria, it starts looking less good. It's good to be the king.
Posted by: Your Highness! ====== Weak kings not so much because of rival nobles, trouble at court, and worries about succession to the throne. Strong kings, even they had regrets like Louis XIV did at the end of his reign for squandered wealth in wars. And all kings/queens were vulnerable when their health was failing as matters of state often took the place of familial love and care. Posted by: whig at October 04, 2025 10:48 AM (WDjG6) 338
Update on my brother Joe, his wife is still alive and "sleeping" but the end must be soon. My brother seems a bit more accepting of the inevitable but still pretty badly grieved. I came here to his town just to try and be a comforting presence but I am not that good at it. I mostly just listen.

Some did, some didn't. Aristocracy was a very uncertain roll of the dice for commoners on justice, welfare, and taxation. The main difference between aristocrats and our current elected officials is that aristocrats could take (not always) a longer view than our current politicians determined to stuff as much plunder as they can while they can. You did see that behavior though with King's ministers as your tenure was definitely uncertain.
_-_ Yep. I'm king and you have to do what I say, or else...I can't be king anymore...and sleeping soundly, yeah probably forget about that. Posted by: Your Highness! You look like the lowly pissboy! at October 04, 2025 10:51 AM (gZoFe) 345

At discount tire, if you ask, there may be some pull offs they can install. A lot of people are upgrading nearly new tires after they buy those insane huge aluminum rims, and need new low wall tires. I got a standard set of four with less than 3,000 miles on them for around $800 last year.

Always kinda fun to pursue the Wisconsin geography lessons. Good morning Saturday hot beverage and divine petitions folk. And today so far I saw three things that made me laugh and /or smile . One was a chipmunk skittering quickly across the road. I ' ve always liked chipmunks.
Posted by: FenelonSpoke at October 04, 2025 09:58 AM (7RYym) When I was 3, we camped in Estes Park. I wandered away from the full table during supper and decided to "share" my food with a chipmunk. My dad says that it managed to latch on to my thumb, I stood stiff in horror and let out an ear-piercing shriek before he rescued me. I became "Little Chipmunk" and called him "Big Chipmunk" for years before finding out why. Many years later, my husband found a lifelike sized chipmunk in a giftshop that happened to be a puppet. It wound up in our car, and "Thumbiter" preys on innocent thumbs. Posted by: pookysgirl, a/k/a Lil Chipmunk at October 04, 2025 10:52 AM (Wt5PA) 351

"I think kids go to Halloween parties now, instead of trick or treating. Parents too worried about letting out on the streets, I suppose. I've seen less and less put at night over the past 10 or 15 years."
Here in Kenosha, Wisc., my wife and I hand out 100+ pieces of candy each year, if weather is at all decent. The city sets hours for trick-or-treating for the few hours between the end of school and sunset, which makes sense. We love to see the young moms and dads escorting their little ghosts and goblins around the neighborhood, and the junior-high kids often have very creative costumes. I like Halloween!
