Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Unhelpful in the Battle Against Socialism’s Growing Appeal: Sherwin Williams Eliminates Employees’ 401(k) Match Amidst Stock Buybacks and Increased CEO Compensation![]() “Sherwin-Williams said to pause 401(k) matching as macro headwinds dent sales” [MSN / Seeking Alpha – 9/17/2025] Sherwin-Williams will temporarily suspend its matching contributions to employee 401(k) plans due to weak sales and higher costs, Cleveland.com reported this month, citing an internal communication. The suspension will apply to the paint manufacturer's policy of matching 100% of the first 6% of eligible employee 401(k) contributions, starting October 1. CEO Heidi Petz said the decision was a result of high mortgage rates weakening housing demand and inflation reducing DIY demand. Tariff policies also dented industrial demand and raised costs for the company. "Sherwin-Williams is not immune from these conditions, which have lasted longer and been more impactful than anticipated," Petz said, adding that macroeconomic headwinds will likely persist through at least the first half of 2026. The company has also taken up cost-saving measures such as reducing third-party spending, delaying new hires and restructuring global assets.I’ve read several news reports about the financial headwinds forcing Sherwin to cut employees’ compensation via suspension of the 401(k) match, but I have not been able to find any documentation of “cost savings” to be realized by giving a haircut to executive bonus plans. Neither have I been able to find any reporting that stock buybacks are being suspended to conserve cash. Whenever I discuss executive pay, I receive some pushback arguing that stock incentives are not an expense, and therefore do not affect a company’s profit. That’s true. Executive stock incentives come from diluting the ownership of existing shareholders and redistributing it to company executives. But when a company uses its cash to buy back shares, and then it awards stock shares to its executives, it is a two-step distribution of the company’s cash and equity to its executives. Our friends at the Heartland Institute recently released a very disturbing poll indicating that socialism is becoming increasingly popular among young voters: Heartland/Rasmussen Poll: 53% of Young Voters Want a Socialist to Win the 2028 Presidential Election, 76% Want Government to Nationalize Major U.S. Industries [Heartland Institute – 9/04/2025]Additionally, 76% of respondents said they “strongly agree” or “somewhat agree” that “Major Industries like health care, energy, and big tech should be nationalized to give more control and equity to the people,” suggesting that increasingly more young American voters favor radical socialist policies. In case my persistent bashing of woke corporations and rapacious executives causes any misunderstanding, please know that I am a passionate capitalist / free marketeer. I detest socialism and communism. What bothers me is how many corporate executives do not share my passion. Too many executives seek oligopolistic barriers to competition, regulatory favor, and labor laws that allow them to use foreign labor that is chattel-adjacent. Many executives also see their companies as a pool of wealth that they are entitled to tap into for personal self-enrichment. The open contempt that much of corporate America expresses for American labor and labor expense is dangerous. If we don’t want young Americans getting seduced by the appeal of socialism, we can’t have corporate executives re-allocating employees’ retirement benefits toward uses that will personally benefit those executives. In a free market economy, CEOs like Heidi Petz have the ability (with the pliant acquiescence of their Boards) to loot their own companies and cut employee pay and benefits. But just because they can, doesn’t mean they should. Similarly, voters have the option of casting their ballots for candidates who will nationalize corporations and also loot them. Just because they can, doesn’t mean they should do so either. But the scary part is that they can vote to impose socialism. The job for those of us defending capitalism from the siren song of socialism is made much harder by executives who feel entitled to ever-growing 8-figure compensation, irrespective of their companies’ results, and made worse by their attitude that employees and labor expense are a pestilence that reduces executive bonuses. In return, those banks gave the government preferred stock, which didn’t have voting rights either – but did give the government first dibs on dividends and liquidation. That’s ownership. Even better, Bush’s Treasury also demanded warrants — rights to convert into common stock down the line. If Trump had exercised those warrants in his first term, the federal government could have taken actual equity in Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, and the rest. The piece is behind a paywall, buy if you’re a Blaze subscriber, I’d be honored if you’d give it a read.

Given that most executives are functionally retarded and a significant fraction are now Indian, the argument about attracting talent seems questionable. Posted by: I used to have a different nic at October 03, 2025 11:04 AM (ExV1e) 11

Posted by: Its Go Time Donald ======= Actually if a company offers its executives retirement options, then they are bound to offer those to workers. Quite often the whole offering of options and warrants are the equivalent to 401ks except not offered to the workers. So if you want to tax all wages, salaries and ancillary benefits like company cars, private jets, deferred compensation, etc. accruing to top management, then it would be more an apples to apples comparison. In reality, in publicly held firms, the top executive level and board act more like looters than sober fiduciary guardians of shareholder equity. Our problem isn't the attitude of businessmen. They've been selfish since time began.
Our problem is the massive governmental interference that discriminates against small businesses and gives a massive advantage to large businesses. Complying with the myriad of regulations in this country means that the larger you are, the more the cost of compliance is diluted. (There are many other and most benefit large business, including lobbying to make it that way.) The larger the business is, the more the opportunity for grift, the more people getting screwed by short-sighted executives, the more people think government is the answer when government is the problem. It is a shame that short term thinking dominates most companies these days, with all energy focused on hitting metrics for the next quarter, and no thought about five years from now.
What that does is give credence to the socialists, and the socialists still have not figured out, over two centuries later, that socialism does not work economically. Socialism is a net negative financial system. It cannot produce wealth, only erode it. Socialist systems always strip mine the environment for cash, and eventually rely on slave labor to perpetuate the lie as long as possible, until they inevitably collapse. Sherwin Williams has just announced that it is suspending its 401(k) matching program, which matched employee retirement contributions at an amount up to 6% of an employee’s pay. This is expected to save the company about $165 million per year.
Meanwhile, Sherwin Williams has also flushed away $892 million on stock buybacks in the first two quarters of 2025 to prop up its stock price, a move which is critically important for Sherwin executives, whose compensation is heavily based on stock awards and the performance of its stock. It's a bold plan, let's see how it works out for them. Posted by: toby928 is this a trope? at October 03, 2025 11:19 AM (o9/HH) 66

Yeah the execs do not cover themselves in glory, certainly. It is very hard to point to an exec that makes clear decisions that further a company's progress. Maybe many do, but quietly, in a slow methodical unremarkable way that is boring to report. SCOTUS takes a 2A case. Grants Cert in Wolford vs HI. This is a big deal because it addresses the Blue states "Vampire Rules" (You can only come in if invited) that prohibit Concealed Carry unless the owner of a business specifically allows you to enter. In most states businesses may prohibit entry to Concealed Carry, in the Blue states NY, CA, HI etc they turn that upside down and invoke the Vampire Rule toward lawful carrying.

The only thing that makes sense regarding the shutdown is that Dems are hoping it helps the VA governor race. It might. I dunno. That's probably why everyone's pushing polling saying that Republicans are to blame (while Democrats are doing exactly what Republicans did in 2013 when everyone blamed Republicans...whatever don't care).
But that's like bunting with two outs, a runner on third who may score, and already down by at least 5. All while your bullpen has used up every reliever and you've sent in your third basemen to pitch the next inning. Very hard to prevent or even limit any individual from acting in their own best interests, regardless where on the employment or executive ladder they are. CEOs will try to maximize their pay just as janitors will.
At one time, boards jealously guarded a company's income and finances. That was decades ago. Now, the board and CEO are joined ass-to-mouth and together loot the company, while the shareholders just watch. It's hard to know how unfair losing the matching is unless we know what the SW employees are paid. In some instances, there's no 401k matching because the salaries are already above average. The benefit of capitalisms is that it allows a free market to let producers and consumers decide what to best employ their money and labor, What we have now, though is a centrally controlled financial system and regulatory system, which allows for certain players to manipulate the landscape to promote their own success, and doing so also destroys market signals and promote misallocation of funds, and hides outright theft, Posted by: Kindltot at October 03, 2025 11:33 AM (rbvCR) 115

Stock buybacks are a temporary way to juice your stock price without having to execute any real-world improvement of the company's business.
That's a good argument for selling on the bump, since the company's long-term value probably isn't going to improve. Posted by: Cicero (@cicero43) at October 03, 2025 11:40 AM (Q1uY4) 141

That is funny, having worked with auditors from most of the top firms, PWC is the only one I have worked with that to me was honest.
I review the board members, and look at which companies they have worked at, and which president put them on federal committees and vote accordingly. Sherwin Williams, when they noticed the DEI track heading south, immediately rebranded the effort to "Belonging and Culture" while keeping the same DEI employees and policies in place. Many corporations did this, but this is one of the first articles I've read where it was admitted and defined. Most corporations, I assumed, would be more covert than that and throw the DEI employees into the legal office under some "compliance" title. Posted by: Orson at October 03, 2025 11:45 AM (dIske) 166

But on the other hand, it opens the door to new competitors. Basic influences of Porter's economics.
Posted by: Diogenes ==== The problem is that those competitors may or may not be based in foreign lands, and additionally that we all live in the short run in a specific place and time. And often the issue on some industries is that they become natural monopolies due to the scale of capital needed for startups and first mover advantage. That is leaving aside the inevitable government/monopoly or oligopoly capture. Principles and theory do not run the world because they are always heuristics when dealing with humans, not an absolute description of reality. Reality is messy whether it is counterinsurgencies, trade policy, labor policy, or taxing policy. To quote Herbert Simon, we muddle through via informed pragmatism, not theory. In retirement we've been able to leave our employer based retirement plan alone and directed more effort into a wealth management program that we, and our advisor control. It's doing quite well. Profit is the tangible measure of your success in a venture. Gain is just a number that's higher than it was yesterday. It the latter looks good, it might just be papering over the former looking terrible.
Is your business succeeding at creating profit, or is it just creating gains? Profit is the creation of wealth. Gains are zero sum, merely moving money from one place to another, and the negative half of that sum will inevitably bite you in the keister. The appeal of socialism to the younger gens isn't really based on their fear of capitalism. Do we really think teenagers are paying attention to what happens to company's 401k-matching policies?
What drives the appeal of socialism is the two things that have always driven its appeal: (i) jealousy and (ii) sloth. Number (ii) is especially a more recent development. Even in the corporate world, the younger generations aren't willing to work as hard or long as the older gens. I saw this at Big Law Firm Inc. I signed on to insanely long hours and no life, in exchange for piles of money, prestige, and career opportunities. Posted by: Sapwolf at October 03, 2025 11:44 AM (5pS45) Well, the quickest way to increase American wages would be to stop the importation of millions of people willing to work VERY cheaply because they are not subject to the laws Americans have to follow. (Like housing restrictions, insurance requirements, etc...) Another way would be to discourage female participation in the workforce, as all the increased women in the workforce also lowered wages and made single-income families have a much harder time. (Two-income families now compete for housing with two-incomes also driving up the price of housing... additionally negating the benefit of more income.) The problem is that those competitors may or may not be based in foreign lands, and additionally that we all live in the short run in a specific place and time. And often the issue on some industries is that they become natural monopolies due to the scale of capital needed for startups and first mover advantage. That is leaving aside the inevitable government/monopoly or oligopoly capture.
Whig, Valid points. In a global economy foreign competition is inevitable and not necessarily bad. And across a given industry, competition "should" make that industr better. Posted by: Diogenes at October 03, 2025 12:05 PM (2WIwB) 246

NASA lost a shuttle and seven astronauts at least indirectly due to a ban on Asbestos. Feynman highlighted the O-ring trouble with solid rocket boosters but if you read the report, the deletion of asbestos putty used to pack around the O-rings was at least as disastrous.
The loss of the heat shield tiles on the other shuttle was, according to rumor control, at least in part due to inadequate cleaning of the surfaces prior to installation, resulting in poor adhesion. They banned the use of suitable solvents. Lead paint is not healthy to be sure, but I’ve no doubt it makes for a superior coating. I expect it is much less prone to flaking or cracking over time. I have to laugh at the rich boomer myth. Based on recent stats, the median boomer has less than $500K in accumulated financial wealth. That is more than the other cohorts, but it would only give a retiree about $1200 a month.

Denton, Tx did that for Texas Instruments years ago. Completed Loop 288 construction on the north end, gave tax incentives and even covered the costs of building the facility. TI said they weren't interested, but Denton pushed forward. They expected it to boom, started building an Outlet Mall near by and expected hotels to come in an build.
TI occupied the facility for maybe 18 months and shut it down. It sat vacant for a spell, now is a part of the UNT Technology Department. I surprise myself to reason this way, and it still rings a little bit specious to me:
Federalism provides benefits to the basic functions of government, not instead of them. Posted by: Axeman Madison's Federalist 46 deals with that. Basically a pragmatic argument that both states and the federal government will end up competing over who has the affections of the population. That means a non performing state or localities will eventually cause fedgov to move in to fix teh issue. If the state or locality function better, then the population as a whole will resist such incursions by Fedgov as nah bro, we got that covered. E.g. Mississippi with its vast reading improvements without Fed input is an example and other states now beginning to return to phonics for reading as well. Madison, as the Federalist papers were designed to sell the new Constitution, glosses over when the Federal government desires and causes dysfunction in states and localities because of being driven by trying to gain power or being at the behest of special interests to force states and localities to do bad things like trannyism and forcing gay activism into school curriculum. This is what corporations do now to inflate their profit and share price.
But they make a lot of enemies along the way. I don't ever want to see the effing airlines come to congress for a bailout when their CEOs make effing $25 million to $33 million per year. And the seating is so tiny you can't even bend over to pick something up from the floor. Posted by: Random PJ at October 03, 2025 12:23 PM (RRCAT) 277

Posted by: Thomas Paine Gen Z due to open borders, DEI, and other nasty policies such as the accumulated debt of the US are living in austerity. Some you may argue are self caused like student loan debt servitude but that impoverishment is likely to lead to politics of resentment and socialism because they view the entire system as unfair to them. One can argue whether factually that is true or not but the argument that generations ahead of them screwed them royally is hard to refute. And I am a late Boomer and agree with them. The absurdity and self-dealing inherent in public company stock buy-backs is illustrated by one fact: if the entity were privately held, executives would never spend cash buying back stock of minority holders.

The largest gas refinery on the west coast just blew up in El Segundo California. Get read for $7.00 per gallon gas (if not more) on the west coast.

My mother retired at 55 years old from Walgreens after 30 years and never made over $10 an hour as a Pharmacy Tech. My father had her put in the max contribution for every financial program they had because he knew when he passed he would not to be able to leave her anything since he was basically uninsurable because of type 1 diabetes. Also his military pension would end.
He was prescient since he died at 55 years old . But my mother was set for life because of his advice. You don’t have to live in poverty but you need to live within your means. You don’t have to get an updated iPhone whenever a new one comes out for example. I don’t think the last two generations understand that. Late to the party but it IS worth remembering that socialism has LONG appealed to the young. Just look at who supported McGovern in 1972.

My new house used Sherwin Williams. The builder gave me a free gallon of interior paint for touch up. I bought a gallon of exterior on my own and was shocked at the cost.
Posted by: Willie Nailer Sherman William does a 40% off sale 4 times a year (or something like that). The contractors load up on paint at that point. Stupid concept. It’s much better paint than home despot behr (I’ve used both) and they should offer it at a competitive price where they aren’t losing. Increase the customer base from people who randomly go in and say omg this is too expensive I’ll go to home despot.
