Years back, in 2013, as part of the marketing campaign for the little-regarded Carrie remake, a company staged a viral marketing prank in a coffee shop. They rigged the shop with simple (but effective) practical special effects, induced a bunch of marks to enter the shop for a free coffee, and then had a "telekinetic girl" go crazy and start wrecking shop. The movie might have been lame, but the marketing was great. If you somehow missed this gem, check it out here. Below: They also staged the same basic prank in Brazil to market the movie there. This is probably new to you. The beginning is like the NY prank, but the ending features more pyrotechnics.

Man. My kid is getting serious with a young lady. He's pretty clumsy with girls, so I thought I'd for sure have to deal with this from his sister and some guy first.
I need to meet this girl, but I don't really know what to do. It's a girl, so I can't say "listen, I'll crack you in the temple with this decking hammer, wrap you in a tarp and shoot you if you fuck up." Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at October 03, 2025 07:50 PM (BI5O2) 9
Didn't a bunch of "ghost hunters" realize that they weren't ghosts but demons and quit? My wife used to watch those shows and said the attrition rate was pretty steep.

I remember this. Absolutely brilliant. But also a fascinating study in group behavior. Very few people noped the fuck out. Most of them stood around shrieking and gawping. Others shrieked and gawped and broke out their phones. Mob paralysis is probably a thing. And people are kinda retarded. I'm sure they'll say now "oh I knew all along it had to be a prank." Bull. I'm not sure, but your question reminds me of some unique punctuation I came across years ago. I was reading something by William Faulkner - might have been Old Man or maybe one of the Snopes novels, not sure - and right in the middle of a paragraph, Faulkner opened a parenthesis and began writing sentences that eventually resulted in the parenthetical prose requiring its own new paragraph. Only time I think I ever saw something like that. Posted by: Paco at October 03, 2025 08:05 PM (mADJX) 55

From an AI search: "Faulkner's prose was unique for its experimental and complex style, featuring innovative stream-of-consciousness narratives, long and convoluted sentences, frequent shifts in time and perspective, and an intricate narrative structure that blurred past and present to explore themes of Southern history, race, and identity. His dense language, complex syntax, and unique narrative techniques created a rich, multi-layered literary experience for the reader, setting him apart from contemporaries like Hemingway. "
That description, not unlike Faulkner's prose, definitely has what we call, in North Carolina, a certain je ne say what? about it. Posted by: Paco at October 03, 2025 08:16 PM (mADJX) 101

Man sent photos of bear at his campsite. He was found dead days later, AR cops say
A 60-year-old Missouri man was found dead near his campsite in Arkansas with “extensive injuries” consistent with a bear attack, authorities said. The man’s son called authorities Oct. 2 after not hearing from his father “for a couple of days,”according to a news release from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office. When a deputy arrived at the Sam’s Throne campsite to check on him, he found “evidence of a struggle and injury” with “drag marks leading from the campground into the woods,” according to the release. Investigators found the man dead several yards away, authorities said. https://is.gd/wc8F3k Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks, Going For the Brass Ring! at October 03, 2025 08:19 PM (L/fGl) 115

We used to have "mooky spoovie" (spooky movie) time on Saturdays when I was a kid. I saw lots of the old Bs, some of which I recognized in that compilation. And some of those movies delved into serious psychological horror! The Mole People -- live underground all your life then burn yourself to death by stepping into the sun as a sacrifice. The Brain That Wouldn't Die -- crazy doctor's beautiful fiance is horribly injured in a wreck, he keeps her head alive in a dish and goes hunting for a body to attach to it, gets undone by a humanoid he assembled from spare parts that he keeps locked up, the cops come (pretty sure they show up to shake their head at the smoking ruins), and fiance utters the last words of the movie: "Beh. I've never seen anything. Do I believe it? More than less. Posted by: RickZ at October 03, 2025 08:23 PM I would say I'm a non believer in ghosts. I've had some weird things happen in my 100 year old house. A pair of french doors in a guest room, that were locked and bolted, I would walk by and the doors would be open, not unlocked, open. No one had gone in there and this happened about 10 times and a cattle type gate opened itself on camera at 2 am. I told myself the bolt wasn't thrown, but, I know if it's not bolted it will swing open on its own. A friend was visiting with their brother Catholic Priest and he blessed my house and I brought him to those areas and he prayed with me and blessed everything and I've had no problems since then. I'm sure there's a simple explanation but I've got nothing. Posted by: CaliGirl at October 03, 2025 08:30 PM (gpah0) 150
I'm going to ruin everyone's paranormal delusions and suggest that any strange experiences are explained by science. SCIENCE!!!!
Einstein suggests that time is not linear, but past, present and future can exist at the same point. I think it's called Block theory...intwined with the theory of relativity. Time is, in fact, relative. Therefore, voices, "apparitions", electronic recordings...are, in fact, actual people and the window between these dimensions is somewhat fleeting for some reason. Can you communicate with these "ghosts?" Depends. Can they see you as you see them....hear you as you hear them? Sometimes yes. Sometimes no. Posted by: Orson at October 03, 2025 08:30 PM (dIske) 151

150 Einstein suggests that time is not linear, but past, present and future can exist at the same point. - Orson

Posted by: runner, austere religious scholar at October 03, 2025 08:38 PM (g47mK) --- That really doesn't sound like Job, who was renown for his righteousness and gave to any one who had need. The whole point of Job is that he was not punished for any sin. The whole point about Job is he was a man who put skin in the game, and was not a passive harrumpher. Elihu who comes the closest to getting things right, doesn't merit a mention from the Lord, because he's right, but no skin in the game. The book very clearly shows that Job did not run away from misfortune of others, and perhaps this is why the Lord regarded him as He did. Posted by: Axeman at October 03, 2025 08:43 PM (krQz2) 189

I recall a horror story that was done on a message board. It was kind of clever. I think it was posted here. Basically, some friends are posting on a message board and talking about some kids show they all watched. As it goes along, it gets creepier and creepier and then horrifying. The last post was somebody who talked to his mom and she said there was no TV show. Her son (the poster) would just sit in front of a TV that showed a station with nothing on. Just static. She thought he was just using his imagination. I think SyFy Channel made a mini series out of it. It was forgettable. There was a lot more to it, just can't recall it.

See, I don't have to decide anything, here.
I can believe that there are no ghosts only demons. I can believe that some ghosts are spirits of the dead, but it wouldn't have to be that "lost" rationale (and I don't know what rationale to replace it with, either). But I believe that Samuel (described as "elohim") appeared to Saul, the actual personality from behind the grave. And that's as Biblical as the scripture saying it was so. You find various traditions refuting this because it conflicts in what we understand of God's laws, but the text says: Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” Posted by: Axeman at October 03, 2025 09:02 PM (krQz2) 250

He's on the left, she's on the right. She suddenly realizes something horrible is going on and she starts to scream or beg. Guy keeps staring at her with evil smile. Nightmare on Elm Street? Israel's MOSSAD chief, before the current chief, wrote a book and is now doing a bit of interviewing. Promoting his book and answering questions , like "What went wrong on 10/7". His answer is basically "Everything". Now, so you guys understand, MOSSAD does not work in eternally, only enemies outside Israel's borders is their focus and mission. For internal matters, they have a version of FBI , Shabak/ShinBet. I gather that major mistake was to treat Gaza as an internal , rather than external threat like Iran or Hezbollah.

A group of Confederate reenactors was camping one night in the Chickamauga battlefield in Tennessee.
They saw a group of teenagers were camping on the far side of their hill, and decided to have a little fun with them. So they waited until the moon set and the kids were asleep in their sleeping bags, and, staying in character as ghost soldiers, they stole a march through the woods nearby. The teenagers woke up, screamed, and high-tailed it back to their van to escape. Posted by: Beverly at October 03, 2025 09:22 PM (Epeb0) 313

One thing I remember them talking about back kn the days of HMOs (member them?) Was that they had made it to where it was nearly impossible to make any real money as a doctor anymore. I would assume government health care would be worse. Posted by: Aetius451AD work phone ----------------- Ohhhh yeah, I remember that, especially around the time of the ACA. Doctors would eventually be civil servants, all paid the same standardized mid-range wage regardless of the quality of their work. Since they're civil servants, of COURSE the system draws on "marginalized communities" for med students, so your doctor is not only likely incompetent but unmotivated. Well, we got my mother back home this afternoon. She's doing pretty good, but she needs O2 all the time. She can't go for more than a couple minutes without it, I discovered. So that means having to carefully get the O2 machine (it's a smaller "more" portable one, with battery power which will last about 2 hours per charge) in the bathroom with her. I tried to see how she would do without it, but nope, O2 saturation dropped to 80%. Even "mild" pneumonia will do a number on the lungs of a 95 yr old. I’ve never “seen” a ghost, but I’ve had some pretty mind boggling interactions. There are serious ones I would never talk about, and anyone who’s had such a thing would understand.
But one of the more amusing was in an apartment my daughter rented in an old part of Ft. Worth, an upstairs unit in a 6 plex built in 1912. It was said to have a “reputation”, we paid it no mind. Most of the lights were out, so first thing I personally spent time replacing all the lightbulbs. Then she and I went to target together, to get some stuff. Important; at that moment no one had keys but she and I , and we were together. So we got back about 3 hours later, I tried to turn a light on, nothing. I checked- no light bulbs . None. They were all gone, and nowhere to be found. And what was even more, on a desk, a pile of her jewelry and necklaces had been piled up in this weird little pyramid. She asked me, did you do this? I said no, of course I didn’t. She didn’t stay there long. At least whatever else stayed there was more mischievous than evil. Posted by: Tom Servo at October 03, 2025 09:53 PM (WZaJc) 384
