Having read enough history books and biographies, I've learned that castles and palaces are frequently mud-sucking places to, actually, live in.
Sure there are grand staircases and state rooms and such, but the living quarters are stupidly laid out, the dining room is a mile away from the kitchen, the bedrooms are freezing and the plumbing is primitive.

Newport's Golden Age was when the uber rich of the early 20th century built their summer cottages and moved their for the entire summer. There's an entire section of the city that is populated with these oceanfront mansions and they are opulent beyond belief. The Breakers, the Vanderbilt mansion, has over 30 bedrooms. For the help.
Almost all of them are now museums or have been taken over and broken up for other purposes. Nobody can afford to live in these places today other than Musk and some of his pals.

Sadly, Snowflake is happy outside.
She was an outside cat for awhile. After she was catnapped and stolen from me, I tried the 24 hour thing.
She was pretty good but I have a life to create. Her family has a nice warm cat house they have for her and an electric bed. She's not the first cat to be outside in a Canadian winter.
I miss Trumpy who was also with me, catnapped and taken out of town. Beautiful cat. Some family is currently bending to his will.
Right now, I'm busy trying to create a life and take care of the dog. I've been lifting him off my bed and carrying him down the stairs more. And the feeding is always hell. Old people and animals are horrible to feed.

Absolutely, I want nothing to do with major cities. At the same time I don't want to be the wilderness family. I don't want to be 20 miles from the nearest gas station, or food, etc. It took me a while to find where I am now. The goldilocks zone was real. I wanted breathing room, neighborhoods where the houses weren't on top of one another, far from any shithole cities of jersey, yet close to things you need. I found the farm lands that are surrounded by larger properties. Mine is 2 acres, the dude next to me is 3 acres, a few houses down has 18 acres, across from me I can't even see because he has an 800ft driveway with god knows how much land. Yet, I'm less than 1.5 miles from stores, or gas. As I go just a little farther south, like a few miles, the properties get bigger and more spread out, and then poof, you find stores, and gas, and anything you need. Thats what I like to find again.

My driveway is quite short. It was a selling point. Many of the houses in my neighborhood have driveways that curve into the house, and the garage is disguised as part of the main structure, with windows and even curtains and things. Makes a very imposing facade.
But ours is short and direct, and because I do it myself, I have more money for firearms purchases.

I recall him doing an obit for a scientist smeared by that Mann jerk, and he talked about how the lawsuits "took years off his life." IIRC, the guy died in his late 80s. How much longer was he supposed to go?
There's a huge section of people and sites I've all but forgotten about. Ace is still good, but it's also the threads that he never reads (or at least comments on): books, prayer. Those were really important during the dark years, and now they're a source of comfort and joy.
I do think it's funny how much insane winning we are getting these days. Hegseth's speech was every SNCO's dream come true. It is epic, amazing, historic, and already it's being pushed aside by other epic, historic wins.

But we have a few folks who bought absurdly overpowered snowblowers and desperately want to run them flat out, so sometimes they clear all the sidewalks on the block.
My father is like this. Once he gets that thing going, he doesn't want to stop. Same with his lawn mower, which takes longer to set up than actuall cut his postage-stamp-sized lawn. Anyone with 300 yards is in danger of a trim or a plow, whether they asked for it or not.

I can't wait to post photos. I needed to make the house mine. I took care of Mom and Dad for 14 years here. And apparently to make the house feel mine....monkey statues.
There's one inside and 1 outside by the curb. I'm on a corner lot. Quiet neighbourhood in a very quiet town. I think Dude will be popular. He's a beautiful painted monkey statue, 175 pounds, cemented onto a pedestal, 75 pounds.
A few Halloweens ago, a girl about 10, told me she would come up to our porch after school and hug the dog statue. She'll love the monkey.

One of my friends from high school lives in Texas and he says it has two seasons - spring and yellow.
He loves the politics, but misses four seasons. My wife, who is from Kentucky, has at long last embraced the beautiful quiet of winter. I think I prefer it to summer, honestly.

Summers are worse if you are carrying weight. 100% humidity at any temperature is demoralizing.
Fortunately, in the non-rural areas, one goes from an airconditioned house, to air conditioned car, to airconditioned store... the lots are so small there is nothing to do outside, and the airconditioned gyms offer all kinds of recreation these days.
I kind of like not having snow and cold, almost makes the cauldron summers worth it. Now if I can get rid of the damned deer flies that ruin sunrise/sunset activities.

In Apr 2025, I got a Manuwan infection from a SourceForge download. Win Security logged it deep in the Event Log, but gave no overt notification because it is just a "Low Severity" PUA. That was the start of it all.
(In 2016 SourceForge swore up and down this stuff would never happen again. I'm here to tell you, they didn't do jack.)

Texas climate is Hellish, but the least Hellish is a band that runs through Lockhart into Uvalde that lacks the severe weather, both tornados and frozen rain/snow. The humidity is tolerable without being desert.
I chose ETX because if I were to survive TEOTWAWKI† I want a climate that can be tolerated year round, have water and ready supply of protein. Also SPP is the least endangered RTO‡ in the US.
