Good morning kids. Welcome to October. Wow!

Tonight marks the Kol Nidre service that ushers in Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, the holiest day in Judaism. To my fellow Jews (have an easy fast) and all of you good people out there may you all be inscribed in the Book of Life for a year of health, happiness and prosperity. As for our enemies may the Lord open their eyes and minds, and soften their hearts to recognize the error of their ways so their souls may find redemption. Amen.

And as you may know, the Schumer shutdown has commenced! Are millions of people dead and dying in the streets? It's still dark outside so I can't see.

The federal government partially shut down at midnight Wednesday, hours after all but three Senate Democrats voted down a short-term funding bill. The measure fell five votes short of passing.
The shutdown is the first since December 2018, which saw non-essential government operations cease and tens of thousands of federal employees furloughed or forced to work without pay for 35 days until lawmakers agreed on a stopgap funding measure.
White House Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought notified federal department and agency heads shortly after Tuesday’s failed Senate vote to keep the government funded to begin preparations for a shutdown.
Democrats Senator John Fetterman (Pennsylvania) and Senator Catherine Cortez Mastro (Nevada) voted fo the measure. Independent Senator Angus King (Maine) also voted for the bill. The bill needed five more Democrats to support the measure in order for it to pass.

The one phrase that jumped out at me is non-essential government operations. Well, if they're non-essential why do they even exist in the first place?! Yeah, I get it, priorities. But my observation still stands. What are the priorities of both the Federal government and of course the citizenry that in theory give it the power to engage in those activities. Or at least in theory. And that has been the issue since the founding of the Republic and then beginning with FDR who shot that to hell as the ever-expanding bureaucratic state drained our wallets and denuded our individual liberties.

While no doubt the traitorous propaganda media complex will spin more furiously than Iranian centrifuges to paint all this as the fault of President Trump and the GOP we'll see if the public at large will buy into it, especially since all essential activities and payments and so on and so forth will continue as if nothing happened at all.

While the sight, sound and stench of this vile beast is enough to disintegrate solid iridium, it's this kind of vomitus that makes for effective campaign ads.

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) admitted on Tuesday that Democrats are “demanding healthcare for everybody” in their fight against the continuing resolution (CR) bill. “Are Democrats demanding healthcare for illegal aliens?” a reporter asked Waters on Capitol Hill on Tuesday. “Democrats are demanding healthcare for everybody,” Waters responded.

Absolute gold. Yeah, keep buggering that chicken strychnine-tits all the way to the midterms and beyond.

And speaking of illegal aliens, this item is particularly disturbing:

Registered to vote? Registered to vote?
That suggests some political involvement, possibly with an illegal alien-promoting NGO or a union involved in get-out-the-vote efforts.
Roberts' meteoric rise to Superintendent of Des Moines public schools didn't come about without a lot of politics, particularly teachers' union politics. He not only was in the country illegally, he reportedly faked his highest degree. His scaling to the top had to have involved a lot of DEI and a lot of glad-handing with the ruling leftists and he knew how to do it. He held positions all over the country -- Pennsylvania, etc. -- but it all started in the Washington-Baltimore area.

Elsewhere, there are some troubling things coming out of Ukraine. Could they have anything to do with Pete Hegseth and President Trump's recent confab at the War Department (I love that) with top brass. I hope not.

Once again, it feels as if we’re tiptoeing toward an official war between the United States and Russia — as opposed to the proxy war that has endured for three and half years between Russia and NATO-backed Ukraine.
Although President Trump has downplayed the “rare and urgent” meeting of top military commanders from around the world at Quantico, Virginia, on Tuesday, the event has generated intense speculation. The Pentagon says that secretary of War Hegseth merely wants to deliver a speech on the “warrior ethos” and make sure that military leaders are all walking in the same direction. The president describes the focus of the gathering in general terms: “We’re talking about what we’re doing, what they’re doing, and how we’re doing.” Still, to gather the highest-ranking members of the U.S. military in one location for a chat with the president and secretary of War leaves the impression that something of significant importance will be discussed.
On Monday morning, ZeroHedge gathered data from several sites that analyze open-source intelligence to predict military engagements. Those sites were all tracking a large deployment of U.S. aerial refueling tankers crossing the Atlantic on their way to Europe. A social media account that tracks pizzerias near the Pentagon showed a spike in orders late Sunday night. The last time these sources noted a wave of air tankers leaving the United States and increased carryout orders from restaurants near the Pentagon, the U.S. military was preparing to destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities. When these open-source data points are viewed alongside the unusual meeting of top military commanders in northern Virginia, it is difficult not to conclude that a potentially significant military operation is imminent.

Yeah, I know some people tend to poo-poo ZeroHedge, but still. Let's hope it's not this, but also as I mused the other day, with all the talk and incidents of Leftist/Democrat political violence and actual terrorism, my fear of internal civil war outweighs getting our hair mussed in Ukraine, which I think President Trump despite wanting to bring about the end of that bloody mess, would not be dumb enough to actually trigger war with Putin, even by accident.

It's less a real term, and more a legal one.

Like all civil cases stop in a shutdown once any reserved 2025 funds dry up. That doesn't mean we don't want Trump to win at the Supreme Court for decision #22...he just can't. It's not a function which happens in an "emergency".

Same for IRS. Right now, they will operate under reserved funds for a few days...and then they must stop. But we do still need tax services done (at least why we legally still tax people and corps).

It's why I hate the term "non-essential". It's like Obamacare actually describing good healthcare. If you don't understand the term, you don't realize it's meaningless and usually means the exact opposite.

A better term would be what's used in the snow closures - "emergency services"...except it's hard to say federal bennies are emergency services, but they always got included b/c seniors would literally storm Congress if those ever stopped and no one would win an election again who'd be serving.

And the bennies need (what would be) non-essential folks to pay them...but those folks become essential b/c no one is stopping a federal bennie, be is SS, Medicare, SNAP, Medicaid, WIC, etc in a shutdown. Budget process is far more complicated than new media's lazy ass reporters can manage including WaPo. FWIW, I was working for Congress in the Carter years on House side, there were several budget shutdowns from 1974-1980 that went unnoticed by teh public. Democrats then took to using them as political weapons.

I long ago learned that the 150,000 job per month target was because of population growth, to keep up with new people entering the workforce (minus people retiring).

But, what if the basic assumption of population growth in a normal economy was simply not applicable now?

What if we're seeing actual population declines? What's a good job number then?

I guess it depends on how much of a drain the illegals are in the old age area. Their departure helps with healthcare costs, education, infrastructure, policing... it also helps, non-governmentally, with rent, food prices, probably fuel.

I suspect that they're a net negative on SS and Medicare but that's only a guess and those are the programs that rely most heavily on a monotonically increasing population.

Precedent matters when dealing with statutory interpretation but even the foremost promoters of judicial review at the Founding never thought the Judiciary would be a standing constitutional convention able to de facto amend it at will by a majority vote.

On statutes, Scotus only interprets them once because it reasons that Congress can change the law itself if the Scotus interpretation is unreasonable.

It does the opposite on the Constitution taking upon itself, for example in determining what the 8th Amendment means, Trop v. Dulles, 1958, had this bilgewater for example, "interpreting the 8th amendment "must draw its meaning from the evolving standards of decency that mark the progress of a maturing society."

This means that the court can and has banned whatever it liked as cruel and usual punishment if the court felt like it reflected their belief of a maturing society.

Past shutdowns have been minor affairs with limited impact to anything outside of unplanned vacation for government workers. Everyone's made whole, and things just keep on.

However, Russ Vought, Director of the OMB, has signaled that he's going to fire hundreds of thousands of fed employees and cancel a bunch of federal grants that wouldn't be allowed with the government open. Presidential prioritization of spending in a shutdown is really broad.

Bullshit, no such court order existed and the Florida case documents came out in Biden's era because of state courts. Giuffre and others had civil cases and a NY judge released that batch of depositions,etc.

Same could have happened with Epstein's grand jury transcripts but a Dem appointed judge in Manhattan refuses to release them and another such federal judge refused to release Ghislaine's grand jury transcripts either.

Getting rid of a bunch of job competition on the low end, especially those who can work at below minimum wages because they're illegally working, is going to have massive positive benefits on the lower end wages.

Also, the sudden departure of millions of people is going to have downward pressure on prices for things like groceries and rents.

Shutting the border and aggressively doing inland deportations is going to do more for the economy, especially on the low end, than any government welfare program ever could.

The car is because it's relatively quiet and the acoustics are better. In a house or apartment it can get an echo-ish effect that fucks the audio, even in small rooms. Sometimes he would go outside while a piece was playing and you could hear the sounds of the water and seagulls if he didn't come back in time to change the record.

Was speaking with an elderly and extremely bright/informed former Scot lately who conducts seminars at our local Community College.

Told him how disappointed that the Scottish (from whom my paternal grandfather descended) rejected independence and asked why that was/happened.

He explained that it was the older generations who'd become accustomed to the European Welfare State who ultimately carried the day ... but as they die off, the younger generations there will demand and eventually achieve Independence from the suicidal shitheads in Brussels and London.

I fear it will be too late though as The Caliphate rises in suicidal Western Europe ...

There is a reason why the Founders dismissed universal suffrage democracy as antithetical to a government's stability and longevity. That is why they had property restrictions and/or financial requirements for voting.

Those will money and property are less likely to try to vote themselves into wealth as a class because they would in turn have to pay the taxes to do that.

The GimmeDat block of voters and the ensuing requirement for a large government to provide services to them during the twentieth century era is what has metastasized leftist control over government.

They use the gimmedats in every country as electoral allies to win elections that enshrine leftists in de facto power--in the bureaucracy if not the government itself.

Technically, it was an "early retirement" for those not 100% eligible... for the others, it was just "retirement."

Nobody resigned. There's a subtle difference with regards to retirement monies if you're offered "early retirement."

But, I do think it will put the pain on the state and local governments as their clients and funding go. Schools get funded by the number of students so departed foreign students, less money to go around. Ditto for colleges. Less illegals committing crimes--less incarcerated, less cops needed, etc.

Deportation and forcing remigration most likely will gut a lot of blue service jobs and ngo jobs servicing that population with taxpayer money.

God, I LOVE this place.

We had a great FM Pirate Radio Station locally here out of Jerome, AZ called "Gulch Radio" that played fantastic blues & rock songs rarely heard on the air (they're not licensed and legal) ... good times, good times.

Instead of "Mountain Standard Time" which we have year-'round, they used to announce the Time occasionally and suffix it with "Mountain Stranded Time."

My (federal government office) redacts sensitive and classified information from documents that are to be released through FOIA or Litigation. FOIA and Litigation are suspended during furlough so my office - even though required in statue and regulation - is closed during furlough. I believe that redacting information that could be used by terrorists is a very important function even if not deemed "essential" in terms of a partial suspension of government operations.
