Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Report — 10/1/25![]() The federal government partially shut down at midnight Wednesday, hours after all but three Senate Democrats voted down a short-term funding bill. The measure fell five votes short of passing. The shutdown is the first since December 2018, which saw non-essential government operations cease and tens of thousands of federal employees furloughed or forced to work without pay for 35 days until lawmakers agreed on a stopgap funding measure. White House Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought notified federal department and agency heads shortly after Tuesday’s failed Senate vote to keep the government funded to begin preparations for a shutdown. Democrats Senator John Fetterman (Pennsylvania) and Senator Catherine Cortez Mastro (Nevada) voted fo the measure. Independent Senator Angus King (Maine) also voted for the bill. The bill needed five more Democrats to support the measure in order for it to pass. The one phrase that jumped out at me is non-essential government operations. Well, if they're non-essential why do they even exist in the first place?! Yeah, I get it, priorities. But my observation still stands. What are the priorities of both the Federal government and of course the citizenry that in theory give it the power to engage in those activities. Or at least in theory. And that has been the issue since the founding of the Republic and then beginning with FDR who shot that to hell as the ever-expanding bureaucratic state drained our wallets and denuded our individual liberties. While no doubt the traitorous propaganda media complex will spin more furiously than Iranian centrifuges to paint all this as the fault of President Trump and the GOP we'll see if the public at large will buy into it, especially since all essential activities and payments and so on and so forth will continue as if nothing happened at all. While the sight, sound and stench of this vile beast is enough to disintegrate solid iridium, it's this kind of vomitus that makes for effective campaign ads. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) admitted on Tuesday that Democrats are “demanding healthcare for everybody” in their fight against the continuing resolution (CR) bill. “Are Democrats demanding healthcare for illegal aliens?” a reporter asked Waters on Capitol Hill on Tuesday. “Democrats are demanding healthcare for everybody,” Waters responded.Absolute gold. Yeah, keep buggering that chicken strychnine-tits all the way to the midterms and beyond. And speaking of illegal aliens, this item is particularly disturbing: Iowa Man, the illegal alien known as Ian Roberts, who was arrested by ICE wielding a gun on the run, but otherwise had been "serving" as superintendent of Des Moines public schools, has more history than originally reported. . . I have confirmed from Maryland Freedom Caucus Chairman, @MattMorgan29A (R) that Des Moines Superintendent Ian Roberts has been a registered voter in Maryland since 2012. Roberts is an illegal alien.@elonmusk also agrees, it’s time to clean the voter rolls. pic.twitter.com/4encSIQwfk — Dustin Grage (@GrageDustin) September 29, 2025 Registered to vote? Registered to vote? That suggests some political involvement, possibly with an illegal alien-promoting NGO or a union involved in get-out-the-vote efforts. Roberts' meteoric rise to Superintendent of Des Moines public schools didn't come about without a lot of politics, particularly teachers' union politics. He not only was in the country illegally, he reportedly faked his highest degree. His scaling to the top had to have involved a lot of DEI and a lot of glad-handing with the ruling leftists and he knew how to do it. He held positions all over the country -- Pennsylvania, etc. -- but it all started in the Washington-Baltimore area.Elsewhere, there are some troubling things coming out of Ukraine. Could they have anything to do with Pete Hegseth and President Trump's recent confab at the War Department (I love that) with top brass. I hope not. Once again, it feels as if we’re tiptoeing toward an official war between the United States and Russia — as opposed to the proxy war that has endured for three and half years between Russia and NATO-backed Ukraine. Although President Trump has downplayed the “rare and urgent” meeting of top military commanders from around the world at Quantico, Virginia, on Tuesday, the event has generated intense speculation. The Pentagon says that secretary of War Hegseth merely wants to deliver a speech on the “warrior ethos” and make sure that military leaders are all walking in the same direction. The president describes the focus of the gathering in general terms: “We’re talking about what we’re doing, what they’re doing, and how we’re doing.” Still, to gather the highest-ranking members of the U.S. military in one location for a chat with the president and secretary of War leaves the impression that something of significant importance will be discussed. On Monday morning, ZeroHedge gathered data from several sites that analyze open-source intelligence to predict military engagements. Those sites were all tracking a large deployment of U.S. aerial refueling tankers crossing the Atlantic on their way to Europe. A social media account that tracks pizzerias near the Pentagon showed a spike in orders late Sunday night. The last time these sources noted a wave of air tankers leaving the United States and increased carryout orders from restaurants near the Pentagon, the U.S. military was preparing to destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities. When these open-source data points are viewed alongside the unusual meeting of top military commanders in northern Virginia, it is difficult not to conclude that a potentially significant military operation is imminent.Yeah, I know some people tend to poo-poo ZeroHedge, but still. Let's hope it's not this, but also as I mused the other day, with all the talk and incidents of Leftist/Democrat political violence and actual terrorism, my fear of internal civil war outweighs getting our hair mussed in Ukraine, which I think President Trump despite wanting to bring about the end of that bloody mess, would not be dumb enough to actually trigger war with Putin, even by accident. "The one phrase that jumped out at me is non-essential government operations."
It's less a real term, and more a legal one. Like all civil cases stop in a shutdown once any reserved 2025 funds dry up. That doesn't mean we don't want Trump to win at the Supreme Court for decision #22...he just can't. It's not a function which happens in an "emergency". Same for IRS. Right now, they will operate under reserved funds for a few days...and then they must stop. But we do still need tax services done (at least why we legally still tax people and corps). It's why I hate the term "non-essential". It's like Obamacare actually describing good healthcare. If you don't understand the term, you don't realize it's meaningless and usually means the exact opposite. A better term would be what's used in the snow closures - "emergency services"...except it's hard to say federal bennies are emergency services, but they always got included b/c seniors would literally storm Congress if those ever stopped and no one would win an election again who'd be serving. Leftist word salad enthusiasts like Norris are there to gatekeep. They are so bad it’s almost SNL levels of parody.
No way they want tough, competent black folks into leadership positions. Because that’s what is needed, and thoroughly exposes the AWFL abject failure. They love to muddy the waters, to try and make it look deep. “This is really super complicated guys! You wouldn’t understand. It takes an Education Major to unpack this, and leverage our synergies to facilitate Lifelong Learning.” So it makes sense she’s going to champion a club 85 illegal alien with fraudulent credentials, 3000 large, and an illegal handgun as he absconds with a taxpayer supplied school district SUV. The Pentagon says that secretary of War Hegseth merely wants to deliver a speech on the “warrior ethos” and make sure that military leaders are all walking in the same direction. The president describes the focus of the gathering in general terms: “We’re talking about what we’re doing, what they’re doing, and how we’re doing.”
And that seems to be exactly what happened. A lot of people are setting their hair on fire thinking WWIII is coming via Ukraine and China invading Taiwan. Personally, I think we’re safe on those scores, for now at least. Trump & Hegseth are preparing for the next war in this increasingly multipolar world we’re entering. Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at October 01, 2025 08:05 AM (a4flb) Do you really want a Yahoo article with the quotes...they apparently were good about quoting actual words, but still doesn't have the whole thing. I'll scan Youtube for a copy of the actual speech later, but I need to start teaching kids soon so that's a later...but considering no one in the faith is freaking out much, I'm assuming Yahoo's "break down borders between peoples, don't build walls between you and your neighbor" is probably on point enough...it was the right gospel for that type of homily (my priest gave the "build bridges with those around you" speech - you get a lot of similar homilies from similar gospels)... I mean if the bishops even here are still "countries can enforce borders, we just wish they'd do it nicer right now", then I doubt the pope was much different. ====== Mandatory entitlements like Social Security and Medicare do not follow the discretionary budget statutes because technically they have their own revenue stream (fwiw, Social Security cannot be changed even via Reconciliation by statute--has to go through filibuster). Thus the shutdown considers only discretionary items in the budget. Plus the mess Democrats have made of regular process since Obama means a lot of programs are no longer statutorily authorized by their standing committee. Technically as Trump warned, all of those programs with no funding can be shut down permanently along with staff in a shutdown. Funding was the figleaf via appropriation bills to allow them to continue to exist with an expired authorization. Budget process is far more complicated than new media's lazy ass reporters can manage including WaPo. FWIW, I was working for Congress in the Carter years on House side, there were several budget shutdowns from 1974-1980 that went unnoticed by teh public. Democrats then took to using them as political weapons. Posted by: whig at October 01, 2025 08:16 AM (WDjG6) 121

I think it's at least 1 in 4 people who have come to view assassination, terrorism, and coup d'etat as legitimate political tools. Zerohedge is largely a Russian propaganda site posing as libertarians. It is run by a person with Russian intelligence contacts and specifically the FSB. That can all be verified based on open source information. The guy lives in NJ, for Pete’s sake. It’s also evident when you read the site, which almost always takes an official Russian government point of view, except on issues they use to exploit readers and convince them otherwise. It’s also a place of pretty rampant antisemitism. And while they’ve tried to calm it down in the comments, it’s still there. I wouldn’t trust anything they say or take it at face value. batman(n.)
"officer's servant," originally military title for "man in charge of a bat-horse and its load," 1755, from bat "pack-saddle" (late 14c.), from Old French bast (Modern French bât), from Late Latin bastum (see baton). Related to baton(n.) 1540s, "a staff used as a weapon," from French bâton "stick, walking stick, staff, club, wand," from Old French baston (12c.) "stick, staff, rod," from Late Latin bastum "stout staff," which probably is of Gaulish origin or else from Greek *baston "support," from bastazein "to lift up, raise, carry." The meaning "staff carried as a symbol of office" is from 1580s; the musical sense of "conductor's wand" is by 1823, from French. Often Englished 17c.-18c. as batoon. I've been thinking more on how The Trump got the Dems to play all their high cards over the last 8 months.
But, especially, how he forced them to completely expose how deeply they had corrupted the Judiciary. Like, they really thought their usual tactics would work: They break all norms and standards, the Republicans huff impotently, and the media giggles while controlling the narrative that it's the Republican's fault. Instead, he has them on the 20 side of multiple issues. Driven there by the media. He has them being blamed for the shutdown. He has them fighting with each other. Has them so addled with anger and derangement against Trump, even the Judiciary are fighting each other. It may not look like it, but up and down the federal bench, there's a whole lot of "that's about enough of this shit." But what's amazing is the Rs. Instead, the sun was coming up, birds chirping, cows chomping grass. _________ The power went out here one afternoon. Crisis, right? I went out to sit in the rocker on the porch. The Senate has interpreted the language of Section 310 as limiting the number of subsequent reconciliation measures to enact legislation pursuant to these instructions to no more than one for any of these three categories. Therefore, as many as three measures can qualify as privileged, although that number could be reduced if they were to be combined as a consequence of the language of the reconciliation instructions." That crank clown judge will be over-ruled at SCOTUS 8-1. Not on all points but, from the fact that he ruled the newly-created 1st Amendment right he granted to foreigners on visa (Visitor's International Stay Admission) leads to the insane part that their right is superior to the Executive's absolute and plenary foreign policy authority. He didn't just say their right supersedes the Executive, he went to the insane step that the Judiciary has a right to manage foreign policy. That if the Judiciary--a mere unelected judge--thinks the speech of visa holder's is not detrimental to foreign policy, then it can over-rule the Executive's determination! That's Crazy Town shit that only the stupidest Justice will agree to uphold. Posted by: People's Hippo Voice at October 01, 2025 09:01 AM (24UpJ) 289

260 arguing that the high court should not blindly follow past precedents without considering whether those decisions adhere to the Constitution
Posted by: GWB ======= Precedent matters when dealing with statutory interpretation but even the foremost promoters of judicial review at the Founding never thought the Judiciary would be a standing constitutional convention able to de facto amend it at will by a majority vote. On statutes, Scotus only interprets them once because it reasons that Congress can change the law itself if the Scotus interpretation is unreasonable. It does the opposite on the Constitution taking upon itself, for example in determining what the 8th Amendment means, Trop v. Dulles, 1958, had this bilgewater for example, "interpreting the 8th amendment "must draw its meaning from the evolving standards of decency that mark the progress of a maturing society." This means that the court can and has banned whatever it liked as cruel and usual punishment if the court felt like it reflected their belief of a maturing society. This shutdown is another distraction from Mike Johnson not swearing in the newest Democrat into Congress, preventing a vote on releasing the Epstein files
Why doesn't a government shutdown trigger a general election in America? If the government cannot come to agreement on a budget then surely it's not an effective government and should lose the mandate? The fact the Dow isn’t -1000+ with a fucking government shutdown shows how idiotic the system is. The economy should be crashing because the country’s government literally is in shambles. The shutdown allows them to reduce the fed, blocks the release of the Epstein files, & continues the tariffs. Yet it's somehow the Dems fault that the GOP gets a trifecta of what they want. The job market is about to get very competitive from the shutdown. The new generation that is coming into the workforce don’t stand a chance. Trump threatening to end programs that Democrats like was very telling. They're not programs for POLITICIANS in Congress, they're programs that the people they supposedly represent want. Told him how disappointed that the Scottish (from whom my paternal grandfather descended) rejected independence and asked why that was/happened. He explained that it was the older generations who'd become accustomed to the European Welfare State who ultimately carried the day ... but as they die off, the younger generations there will demand and eventually achieve Independence from the suicidal shitheads in Brussels and London. I fear it will be too late though as The Caliphate rises in suicidal Western Europe ... These people are delusional and actually voting is scary.
Posted by: dantesed There is a reason why the Founders dismissed universal suffrage democracy as antithetical to a government's stability and longevity. That is why they had property restrictions and/or financial requirements for voting. Those will money and property are less likely to try to vote themselves into wealth as a class because they would in turn have to pay the taxes to do that. The GimmeDat block of voters and the ensuing requirement for a large government to provide services to them during the twentieth century era is what has metastasized leftist control over government. They use the gimmedats in every country as electoral allies to win elections that enshrine leftists in de facto power--in the bureaucracy if not the government itself. Shutting the border and aggressively doing inland deportations is going to do more for the economy, especially on the low end, than any government welfare program ever could.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison But, I do think it will put the pain on the state and local governments as their clients and funding go. Schools get funded by the number of students so departed foreign students, less money to go around. Ditto for colleges. Less illegals committing crimes--less incarcerated, less cops needed, etc. Deportation and forcing remigration most likely will gut a lot of blue service jobs and ngo jobs servicing that population with taxpayer money. Years ago, there used to be a fellow in Gloucester MA who had his own small FM band and set up his own classical music station. He'd just put on a record and let it play.
Sometimes he would go outside while a piece was playing and you could hear the sounds of the water and seagulls if he didn't come back in time to change the record. Because it's a DNC op. The idea was to take over the news with it just like RUSSIA for the next four years and link every possible story to it to control the Narrative. That's all. They're still trying but Trump saw the trap and blew it out of the water from the start by doing what they thought was unthinkable or impossible. The man is a genius.

Workers Org, 'Philly meeting shows why anti-fascist defense can work,' By Joe Piette posted on September 27, 2025' The author participated in this meeting’s defense. He explains why.
It begins, Philadelphia "At a meeting Sept. 18 called by Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner to oppose the use of federal troops in Philadelphia or other cities, community members stood on an historic church’s steps and kept about five fascists from entering. Krasner is running for a third term as District Attorney. Part of his re-election campaign is persistent criticism of President Donald Trump’s policies. At the first of three meetings Krasner called earlier to oppose the use of federal troops in Philadelphia or other cities, a Trump supporter named Frank Scales alongside a few others disrupted Krasner’s remarks with racist, right-wing denunciations." Frank Scales is @FrankJScales, Christian, American, Republican | Founder of: ⚡️SurgePhilly & the Make Education Great Again Movement. Scales was interviewed on Radio 1210 WPHT, 9/29/25 & in a NY Post article, 9/23. Krasner is known as a "Soro DA" as are others in the immediate Region. Green grants work until the $ is gone. In other words, Chuck Schumer shut down the government because he's afraid of losing to AOC in a primary. 7:33 PM · Sep 30, 2025 Posted by: L - No nic, another fine day at October 01, 2025 09:54 AM (NFX2v) 390
"The one phrase that jumped out at me is non-essential government operations. Well, if they're non-essential why do they even exist in the first place?!"
My (federal government office) redacts sensitive and classified information from documents that are to be released through FOIA or Litigation. FOIA and Litigation are suspended during furlough so my office - even though required in statue and regulation - is closed during furlough. I believe that redacting information that could be used by terrorists is a very important function even if not deemed "essential" in terms of a partial suspension of government operations.
