Wednesday Morning Rant

mannixape2.jpg

No Name Given

I am fairly inured to the theater of the absurd that is most levels of American government. I rarely see anything that makes me stop and think, "now that is almost unbelievably absurd." This rare event occurred this week, courtesy of Oklahoma. Oklahoma "welcomed visitors from ICE" this week to do targeted enforcement at a commercial truck port of entry in that state to sweep for illegals. As California is the largest sanctuary state near Oklahoma (Colorado is closer, but nowhere near as large or important), Oklahoma's "Operation Guardian" specifically targeted trucks from California.

Per Oklahoma's press release about the operation, it resulted in the arrest of at least 130 drivers for "various violations" during the three-day operation. As the press release was published, Oklahoma governor Stitt made an X post with this gem:

He should have used the proper "illegal alien," but otherwise, top marks. For those who can't see it, the blurb contains a picture of a redacted New York State CDL where the given name is "No Name Given." Presumably there is a surname on the license (it's redacted). But if you look closely, you will also see the white star in a black circle on the license. This indicates that the license is REALID compliant. An (allegedly) illegal alien arrested by ICE and OHP was given a REALID by New York Sanctuary State.

Many have pointed out that this could be not as bad as it looks because there are countries like Afghanistan, parts of India, etc., where mononyms are common. When that happens, aliens - legal or otherwise - may have no first name to give. But it should be exceedingly rare and the odds of a random trucker in a sample size of 130 illegal aliens found in an arbitrary three-day period at one port of entry in one state being someone who is from one of those countries and and has a mononym seem fairly low. The odds are much better that the sanctuary states just don't care and hand them out like pennycandy. The two, of course, can be simultaneously true.

The press, of course, continues to show the country why they deserve no respect or trust. Oklahoma City's NBC affiliate KFOR-TV ran this gem when covering "Operation Guardian":

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) -- On Monday, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt announced authorities apprehended 130 alleged "illegal" immigrants from multiple countries under "Operation Guardian" sweep along Interstate 40.
The square quotes around "illegal" in the first paragraph (and in the headline!) tell the whole story. But to NBC's credit, there are a couple of facts in the article:
According to the Governor Stitt's announcement, the operation handled by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) targeted enforcement along I-40 in western Oklahoma with numerous commercial truck drivers utilizing licensures issued by sanctuary states from multiple countries, including India, Uzbekistan, China, Russia, Georgia, Turkey, Tajikistan, Ukraine, and Mauritania.
"... utilizing licensures issued by ..." is a lovely combination of both overwrought and wrong. "... possessing licenses issued by ..." would be too comprehensible and correct, I guess. What a dumpster fire the American press is.

The outlandish absurdity of "No Name Given" and the hilarious treatment of it by Oklahoma's local press makes for ideal meme material but I think the overall operation is a better indicator of the dangerous absurdity that has come to define American government. Oklahoma LE and ICE decided to have a group of officers spend a few days hanging out a port of entry on the interstate and actually take a look at trucks coming from the 800 pound gorilla of a sanctuary state that is California. The outcome of that effort was collaring more than 40 illegal alien truckers per day. This was obviously low-hanging fruit, and a shining example of just how deep the rot goes. CDLs are supposed to have some requirements - requirements like being able to speak, read and write in English, for example - but the sanctuary jurisdictions don't care.

Not unless you're an American, anyway. If you're a citizen, you'd better be damn sure to dot every 'i' and cross every 't' and satisfy every requirement. If you're an invader, however, sanctuary states like New York and California are so indifferent that they'll just hand you a CDL without so much as your real name on it. Trucking outfits that follow the rules and hire legal drivers get run down by fly-by-night outfits operating out of a rented room somewhere and staffing up with illegals.

Collaring the drivers is a good thing, but going after the shady operators who run the trucking companies that employ them needs to happen - along with punishing the sanctuary jurisdictions that make it all possible.

9 Willowed:

Speaking of movies...

I watched "Magnolia" again after a couple of decades...mostly to hear Jon Brion's score.

And after hearing his score for the previous night for "Punch Drunk Love"...yeah, the guy's some kind of genius. Probably check out "Eternal Sunshine..." and "I Heart Huckabee's" soundtracks and/or movies next.

As far as "Magnolia" goes, I still think its reputation is overblown. The multiple character arcs don't track well or make sense sometimes. The mysterious, miraculous rain of frogs at the end is supposed to signal a moment where everything is possible and new ways/paths in life can occur.

I really like the idea but for some reason it just doesn't pay off well. I suppose the cop and druggie's story works the best in that regard.

Great directing, some great scenes, great acting with all of the major actors getting their moment to shine. But, the final film is a bit of a dog's breakfast.

Great score though and well used.
Check it out.

14 Those "No Name Given" CDL are the product of pure corruption. Someone is paying vigs to DMV employees to process and approve them.

The process of getting a full CDL through legit channels -- for American citizens of pale complexion at least -- is quite rigorous. Must have perfect driving record, pass all required tests, show all kinds of proof of ID, have no outstanding warrants or tax liabilities, and also be current on any outstanding alimony or child support.

Lots of guys fail for reasons having nothing to do with their driving record, ID, etc. All it takes is some bitter ex-wife ranting about missed child support, and you're DOA. Don't ask me how I know. (No, it's not me personally.)

Not "given." The illegals most likely pay for them. It's illegal here in KY to give a migrant a RealID license. But that's exactly what happened. Several hundred were "bought" by illegals. Multiple clerks in several counties were implicated. The leftist governor has mostly swept this under the proverbial rug.

If you think this bit with the trucks it bad, imagine how many illegals have the RealID and the ability to fly domestically, enter government and military non-restricted spaces and so on.

And the illegals who got those ID's are not all Hispanic or Indian. Many are probably Iranian or Chinese.

Fuck 'em all. A few years back at work I contracted for a semi-truck to move a bunch of equipment from CA to TX. The Russian driver cheerfully demanded a cash bribe to seal up the trailer. I had a bag full of truck seals so I did it myself, which pissed him off.

He cheerfully demanded another bribe to open up the trailer at the destination. The look on his face was priceless when I walked out of the office and he realized that he wasn't getting a bribe on this trip. He didn't know that I'd driven to the same location ahead of him.

That drive was through a nasty ice storm and we passed dozens of wrecked semis along I20 between Pecos and Ft Worth. I stopped counting at 80 wrecks. I'll bet that 90% of them were illegals driving on ice for the first time.

It does seem strange that a state would say "No Name Given" for a name rather than indicate that the person in question doesn't have a first or last name.

Or, their immigration status.

There's been a number of articles written about the whole industry and the ties to Mexican based operations that supply trucks and drivers to a host of OTR companies here in the US.

Reciprocity and Recognition of United States and Canadian Commercial Drivers Licenses
In 1989, the governments of the United States and Canada mutually agreed that the testing and issuance of commercial driver's licenses by their respective countries were similar. As a result, the commercial driver's licenses possessed by a United States-domiciled or Canada-domiciled commercial driver shall be mutually recognized, provided the driver possesses the proper license for the vehicle/vehicle combination being operated. Additionally, those drivers are prohibited from obtaining a commercial driver's license in each other's country. Finally, as Canada requires medical certification in their commercial license issuance processes, a Canadian driver who holds the proper license for the vehicle/vehicle combination being operated is not required to possess separate proof of medical certification.

Federal and State law enforcement officials may consult the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's (CVSA) Canadian Driver's License Reference Guide for more information when verifying a driver possesses the proper license for the vehicle they are operating.

EDLs are a low-cost, convenient option for entering the United States from Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean through a land or sea port of entry, in addition to serving as a permit to drive.

DHS has been working with individual states to enhance their drivers licenses and identification documents to comply with travel rules under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), effective June 1, 2009

EDL's are available in the following states:

Michigan

The amount/different spices that can go into Indian food is astonishing. We've experimented with some lentil and curry type dishes that require a significant amount of prep time and loads of spices.

Although not "Indian" there are variations that use seafood, lamb, pork, etc. that are quite... different. Not to mention all the vegetarian variations.

Fact Sheet Protecting America's Roads Restoring Integrity to Non-Domiciled CDLs (5) pdf (4.48 MB)
The U.S. Department of Transportation announced an emergency interim final rule to strengthen
federal oversight of how states issue non-domiciled commercial learner’s permits (CLPs) and
commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs). The rule comes in response to a nationwide review conducted by
the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) revealing widespread non-compliance
among state driver licensing agencies and a troubling series of fatal crashes caused by nondomiciled
CDL holders.

Last updated: Friday, September 26, 2025

FMCSA’s nationwide review of state processes for issuing non-domiciled CDLs uncovered: Systemic non-compliance across several states, including California, Colorado, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, and Washington; Programming errors and weak quality assurance; and Insufficient staff training that led to CDLs being issued to drivers who were not eligible and to drivers with expiration dates extending beyond a driver’s legal stay in the U.S.

The leverage of employer enforcement is enormous, and would do as much as all the other solid policies combined to end the catastrophe of mass illegal migration. Obviously.

Whining about the inadequacy of paperwork is boring. If the paperwork system is not perfect, I guess employers will actually have to do some due diligence of their own. Ah, too bad. Shape up or get shut down.

Indian food is great. It's also too simplistic to call the food "Indian." India is a yuge country with a billion people from dozens of different cultures and ethnicities. There are so many different regional foods and food styles.

What we in the USA call "Indian food" is really Punjabi -- that's the dominant style here. If you travel to India, you will find many different food styles that are not like Punjabi at all.

228 So a couple of trucking companies had to scare up 120 "legit" CDL operators to secure and move those rigs from that checkpoint.

This is an shocking story. This seemingly simple effort really made a serious dent in the decay. Time to pound it into a hole.

This needs to be followed up with finding those responsible and capturing all the live bogus CDLs out there. A simple extrapolation leads one to think there are multiple thousands.

And as soon as the heat is on there will be a lot of jobs available for properly vetted operations very quickly cause that stuff has to MOVE!

It doesn't seem to be that hard but I am continuously disappointed by people who are supposed to be responsible not facing any consequences which just emboldened those profiting of the decay of our country.

I bet DeSantis could whip up one of these operations and take these people off the road.

Just imagine.

236 Every rational state needs to start using their checkpoints to find illegals. There has to be thousands of them, based on one stretch of road in one state over three days.

Arrest and deport the driver, impound the truck and sell it and its contents at auction. Once trucking companies begin to go bankrupt, the problem will stop.

246 I had to go to my local DMV not long ago. You reserve a time online and then of course still wait an hour or two because...its the DMV

Anyway while I was waiting I got to hear them announce over the intercom in every language known to man that if you didn't have all the ID they wanted they'd send you home with no license....

except...

If you were an undocumented immigrant they would take any papers you had or...none.

Now, I was there to renew a license. The DMV knew who I was, so there was absolutely no need for me to bring ID. Nominally the vision check was the only think adding value...but I did see other people forget ID other then their licenses and get sent home.

But either way we still need something to generate the power they use and the batteries are always going to be something that will have additional "environmental damage". So from a green perspective they will never work.

But from a normal economic perspective they could...but its just as likely we'd see a scenario like we did with light bulbs where the government picked the mercury bulbs and consumers picked LEDs

Note that Musk's huge push to automate driving. This is something that is very marketable in China as many here can probably agree. Not so much here in the States because the US is a Car Culture..

Musk was just riding the sucker greens and their fellow travelers in power to get started.

309 None of this "issuing US drivers licenses/ID cards to foreigners because there's literally no other ID option to give them"

a surprising number of Mexicans were using the Matriculada card from the embassy as a primary ID in Oregon. The Matriculada card basically just lists your name and date of birth and is a notice that you are on a list with the Mexican embassy.

Look how he is dressed….like an 8 year old child.

311 Every rational state needs to start using their checkpoints to find illegals. There has to be thousands of them, based on one stretch of road in one state over three days.

Arrest and deport the driver, impound the truck and sell it and its contents at auction. Once trucking companies begin to go bankrupt, the problem will stop.

I-40 is, I believe, the worst. It's the most direct route out of LA, to the most populous parts of the country.

Having driven it, I would say it's substantially more dangerous (due to the trucks) than the other eastbound interstates. And Oklahoma is a particularly congested stretch of the road.

312 I have suggested, and suggest again, that the proper response is for the federal government to immediately VOID all recognition of "REALID" designations on ANY AND EVERY drivers license issued by these non-compliant states: Falsus in uno, falsus in omnibus.

EACH AND EVERY affected driver wishing to regain REALID status would be required to completely reapply for a new license card marked with a new and different designation symbol, with each application being checked and approved by designated Federal (not state) authorities.

Yup. And just to show you New Yakkers and Californicans that we're not complete assholes about this, you can go down to your nearest fed facility and get yourselves a passport.

That will allow you to travel to other, sane states of the union.

Might take a month or two to get your passport. Hope you didn't have holiday travel plans.

313 I've been envisioning a sort of "Life of Julia" story for the life and times of No Name Given. It seems like the sort of thing Robert Benchley could have stammered through convincingly.

You remember the name Ulysses gave Polyphemus when asked?

Was he free? Was he happy? The question is absurd:
Had anything been wrong, we should certainly have heard.

314 I have posted a comment late in a thread, before reading all the comments.

I then go back to see how much earlier someone posted that thought.

Can’t remember not being beaten to the idea.

You guys are great.

320 Is "No Name Given" a member of Al-Qaeda? If so, we have to suspect that the Governor knew they were and wanted CDLs to be issued to Al-Qaeda terrorists.

321 190 150 "Presumably there is a surname on the license (it's redacted)."

No. The given name and surname are on the same line:

SURNAME, GIVEN NAME

Not in every state.

Many have them on separate lines.
Posted by: XTC at October 01, 2025 11:47 AM (UnA8+)

That may be true of many states, but it's not true of Ne York, which has them on the same line.
