Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - October 1, 2025 [TRex]![]() Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety. Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another random assortment of interweb debris. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. We're at October 1? Really? Yeah... [Random top photo: McClurg Covered Bridge, Hanover, PA, circa 1880]![]() ![]() ![]() Jane Goodall died today at age 91. She was not offended by this cartoon. ![]() ![]() US egg prices fell to about $1.80 per dozen in late September, the lowest since May 2024, as recovering supply, subdued wholesale buying and the view that much of the inflationary adjustment has already occurred combined to ease prices. US egg production in August was about 8.89 billion eggs, down 2% from August 2024 but slightly higher than July, which suggests layers are laying more steadily month over month. The number of layers was roughly 1% lower year on year and the rate of lay per 100 layers also slipped about 1%, which tempers upside but still leaves supply out of steep contraction. On the demand side wholesale prices weakened with light to moderate orders for shell eggs and lower values for dried whole eggs and yolks, while retail prices have retreated from historic highs and removed buying urgency. Egg-type chick hatchings rose by roughly 5% year on year and eggs in incubators are up materially, indicating future layer inventories should grow. source: USDA ![]() ![]() At the moment that Captain Smith crashed the plane into the Empire State Building, Betty Lou Oliver was working on the 80th floor as an elevator attendant. The crash caused her to be thrown out of her vehicle, and as well as suffering from severe burns, Betty had a broken pelvis, back, and neck. They were terrible injuries, but it was clear that Betty would survive as first aid workers helped her and placed her on an elevator to the ground floor. Soon, she would be driven to the hospital for proper treatment. The rescuers had placed Betty on a stretcher and put her in an elevator on the 79th floor. Unfortunately, they didn't know that the cables on the elevator had been weakened in the crash. As soon as they placed Betty on the elevator, the cables snapped, and Betty started to hurtle down towards the bottom of the elevator shaft. Her entire life must surely have passed before her eyes as the elevator rocketed towards the ground. In a few seconds, she would be dead at just 20 years of age; with no opportunity to achieve any of her goals in life nor would she see her husband again. Remarkably, Betty survived her second ordeal of the day with an extraordinary amount of luck by all accounts. The elevator plunged a total of 75 stories, approximately 1,000 feet, so in reality, Betty shouldn't have survived. As it transpired, the thousand feet of elevator cable had broken away and fallen to the bottom of the shaft before Betty landed. By the time she landed, the cable was there to provide a softer landing surface. The rapid compression of air also added to the cushion. Although there are more fun ways to end up in the Guinness Book of Records, Betty's name was added for the unlikely feat of longest survived elevator fall; a record she still holds today.Quite a day for Betty. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() TRex has no comment on rumors that the dino was approached to dance at halftime of the big game and declined. After 100, so rant time: I'm a loyal Linux Mint Cinnamon fan who's been using it for years. I upgraded from v21 to v22 a week ago and had nothing but problems with it. They dumbed it down so that nothing works as good as it used to, as I detailed in the last ONT, and today LibreOffice stopped saving files to local media. It says it did, but it didn't, according to the Files browser!
Then this fresh hell today: According to Google AI, "The prompt from walmart.com asking for a PIN, specifically claiming Brave Browser requires it, is not legitimate and is very likely a phishing scam. You should not enter any information." Yes, today that started happening to me. Lucky I didn't fall for it. If this week old install got compromised, it's the FIRST time I've been hacked in decades of software engineering experience, on ANY platform, even on old SCO Unix servers running bare exposed WAN-facing FTP and Telnet. I'd see dictionary attacks logged all the time, and warned management, who didn't care. Never hacked on Windows. Never hacked on Linux before. This sucks so bad. I've spent all day inspecting my many computers for compromise. I'm asleep when Pixy thread comes up. GI BILL is a trifling amount. It goes to the recipient, not the school. It would be an issue because it is typically used for rent and food and things like that.
Initially it was a great deal. When first enacted, it paid tuition to whatever school you wanted. Of course, you had to get accepted and in those days it was difficult to get in to the top tier Ivies. But if you had the chops, Uncle Sam would pay for Deah Old Hahvahd or Yale. Not any longer. Elevators and me. Several stores, but here's one:
Worked in the ED of an 8 story med center in FL. Got on one of the back or patient elevators to go to the 5th floor. The elevator zoomed up to the 8th floor and then went zooming down to the 1st floor again. Not stopping on any floor. Going super fast up and down. The only other person on the elevator with me was a maintenance man. He was holding the rail and cowering in the back, sweating, mute and pale. I did not have time to chat, either. By the 2nd zoomie I was pushing and pulling buttons. I finally got it to stop long enough on the ground floor by holding the stop button and getting off (he got off as well and simply ran away without speaking). I thought wth was that? Went back to the ED, found a sharpie and wrote a sign "out of service" to tape to the door after calling the operator to alert people. It was wild. I had two thoughts: we would launch up past the heli pad into space, or pancake down to the bottom. At least I tried vs being a useless mute puddle like that guy, who possibly ran past me because he wet himself or worse. I just went back to work then got on another elevator to the 5th floor. The End. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at October 01, 2025 11:07 PM (6PCLE) 253

One is a Canon flatbed scanner that only works with Win 7, because Canon is a bunch of dick-eaters who won't even bother to make compatible drivers every time Windows changes the required driver architecture.
Second thing is Win 10 running my Flex 5000 xcvr, an excellent xcvr with excellent features, Except: crusty old FireWire interface. That's such a shitshow lashup, I don't even know how Win and Flex EVER made it work. And even if a vendor is blessed, gremlins at the vendor or ANYWHERE along the supply chain could slip in all the hacked keys they want (exploding pagers, anybody.)
Top dog FIDO Alliance won't even stoop so low as to sell the damn things THEMSELVES. No, that's beneath them. At least there'd only be two breaks in chain of trust, or one if they shipped by licensed bonded courier. Plus the damn things cost a fortune, $55 per each. And they'll wear out in no time from plugging and replugging. What am I supposed to do, buy one for EVERY machine I operate? Nuts to that. I am not a smart man. This is a genuine question.
If the elevator is plummeting at, say, 50mph, then aren't all the occupants also traveling at 50mph? So when you jump you may slow your speed a bit, but you were just traveling at 50mph! I suspect in that scenario you're screwed either way. That being said I'm still going to jump. Posted by: 496 at October 01, 2025 11:21 PM (r/nnx) 280

I made more progress on the Avanti today. Got the shifter linkage rod installed. Both the transmission and the lever are in "park" right now. Will need a road test to see how the rest of the positions shake out.
Got the right-side exhaust pipe "mostly" done. I was able to pull the intermediate pipe out of the muffler. No rusted in place, woo-hoo! I hammered a teaspoon-size dent in it to clear the corner of the transmission pan, and also cut a bit of the webbing out of the frame X-member to let it move a little to the right. Should have a quarter-inch clearance at the tightest points, now. Cut up an old '65 Studebaker Y-pipe to get left and right head pipes, and got the right one prepped and test-fit. Left about a 14" gap between it and the front of the intermediate pipe. And about a 45 degree angular difference, too. I dug around in my stash, and found a pipe with 2 bends in it. One bend was too shallow, but th other was dead-nuts on. Cut 15" out with the bend in it, and it being one size larger pipe, it easily slips over the head pipe and intermediate pipe, and looks like it belongs there. Done for the day. I think I only have one fat lady on an elevator story. I was in the Carpenter's Union, Local 257, East Side Manhattan. Was wearing overalls and a v-neck t-shirt taking the elevator to go down for lunch. Chubby lady gets on the elevator looks at me, smiles and says, "I'm sorry. I just have to do this". She grabbed my chest hair with both hands and kind of pulled, twisted it. Then she said "thank you". I think I might have responded-"glad I could help".

In at least three episodes, and that's only counting TOS. The orginal series had to recycle a lot of plots to get to 70 whatever eps. It is the nature of hydraulics to slowly leak down. The loader bucket on my tractor does so with some alacrity, and I never get under it! My 4-post hoist in the shop is raised/lowered by hydraulics, and I never go under it until I have done a walk-around and verified that each of the 4 locking dogs has engaged its slot on the upright. I guess none of you Morons can explain the fast yo-yo elevator ride I survived above? I have always wondered.
It was scary. When I got off I had some sweat on my forehead. I did not get a good look at the guy who was useless that ran by me. It was not women and children first, he ran off before me because I was pulling the stop button when the doors opened by a miracle. At least I tried to stop it, and for 3 rides all the buttons were useless. You'd think this would end my elevator days but it did not. I told others about it who have an elevator phobia and they were stunned. I am often, when in danger, too stupid to be stunned and work on fixing it vs collapsing and screaming. I said no words to this guy to help me, either. I think I glanced back and he looked freaked out and I knew no help was coming from him. Thankful I did not die with that guy. I'd never seen him before and never saw him again. I barely glanced at him when I got on and the fun part started. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at October 01, 2025 11:56 PM (6PCLE) 366

Lee Marvin's only number one hit record was "Wand'rin' Star," which reached the top of the charts in the UK for three weeks starting March 1, 1970, and also topped the charts in Ireland for two weeks. The song, originally written by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe for the 1951 stage musical Paint Your Wagon, was performed by Marvin in the 1969 film adaptation, where he played the role of prospector Ben Rumson. Huh. I wonder what's got his antennae up. Posted by: Blonde Morticia --- This is reportedly to prevent leaks to the press, amid a climate of perceived 'disloyalty' and dissent against Defense Secretary (or War Secretary) Pete Hegseth. Polygraphs are typically used in the military or intelligence community in cases of suspected foreign espionage or instances of suspicion of handing off classified information. Hegseth has already greatly narrowed his trusted inner-circle. "All military service members, civilian employees and contract workers within the office of the defense secretary and the Joint Staff, estimated to be more than 5,000 personnel, would be required to sign a nondisclosure agreement," WaPo says. ... There is an additional directive from Feinberg which establishes a random polygraph program for said officials, but it's unclear if there's any limit to the scope - suggesting that even four-star generals and admirals could be subject. Out of curiosity, I had Grok crank some numbers for elevator terminal velocity. In free air, terminal velocity would be a whopping 120+ mph. This is based on the general drag equation for a blunt object. Now, in a shaft, that drag term becomes a horse of a different feather entirely. It's not compression of the air in the shaft underneath so much, but a pressure differential caused by the high speed relative to the narrow gap of air between the car and shaft. In the old days in the older skyscrapers, that gap was tighter than current standards. Terminal velocity would be around 47 mph, according to Grok's formula. Mythbusters did a show on this, and came up with 53 mph for the terminal velocity. In modern, wider gap designs, that terminal velocity would be higher. Wouldn't be near full open air terminal velocity, but the gap is bigger. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at October 02, 2025 12:45 AM (w6EFb) 461

Word had leaked that he was planning a classified briefing for Elon Musk on China, a revelation that infuriated President Trump and raised alarms inside the Pentagon given Musk’s business ties to Beijing.
“I’ll hook you up to a f—ing polygraph!” Hegseth shouted at Adm. Christopher Grady, the then-acting chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, according to two people familiar with the exchange. Hegseth demanded proof that Grady hadn’t leaked news of the March 21 briefing. Grady was never subjected to a polygraph, and Hegseth would go on to accuse a number of other people for the leak, including Lt. Gen. Doug Sims, the Joint Staff director, whom Hegseth also threatened with a polygraph test. But for Hegseth, the episode marked a turning point in an already rocky tenure. Coming just days after revelations that the former Fox News host had shared sensitive military information in unsecured group chats on Signal, the leaks deepened his frustrations and eroded his trust in his close circle of advisers, the officials say. --- This appears to be all WalPo so grain of salt. Personally thinking he should rub that salt in hard. Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at October 02, 2025 12:47 AM (SP4ma) 465

I figured that the death rate per trip with regular stairs might be higher than escalators. It's not. The absolute number of deaths from stairs is much higher, about 2000 - 12,000 (near full order of magnitude uncertainty there), but there are about 10 - 20 trillion "trips" on stairs per year. That translates to a fatality rate of 0.1 - 1.2 deaths per billion trips. The high end of that would be greater than the elevator rate, but the low end would be less. Berserker, now I'm listening to Twilight Zone (Golden Earring). Reprieve? ;-)
Posted by: qdpsteve at October 02, 2025 01:07 AM (/p+XQ) Thats not a bad one. The lyrics are actually pretty good. The one thing I can't stand is when lyrics don't say anything. Dio used to piss me off with that. He'll sing shit that makes no sense sometimes. Holy diver was like that Holy diver You've been down too long in the midnight sea Oh what's becomin' of me You? Who the fuck are you? the dude is down in davy jones locker room and your bitching? Were you feeding him an air line and now he's dead and you're up in the boat alone? Ride the tiger You can see his stripes but you know he's clean Oh don't you see what I mean No, I don't see what you mean. Are you on safari or in the fucking ocean? No fucking clue what you mean. kiss my ass. Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at October 02, 2025 01:19 AM (snZF9) 502
The one song that was everywhere in 80s late commie central Europe was Joe le Taxi by Veronica Paradis. I liked the sax part, but got right damn tired of the rest.

Berserker, I feel exactly the same about Blondie's Rapture. Then again I don't think any rap lyrics at that time made any sense, unless they were about illicit substances.

Safest thing to do about riding an elevator is make sure you clear the gap when entering and exiting. Number two is to make sure, when stopped, the elevator is flush with the floor. Then there is the indecisive one that keeps on adjusting up a little then down a little.

Also, for any fans of Der Kommissar:
I just now read that Laura "Gloria" Brannigan recorded a song on her second album, called Deep In The Dark, that used the *exact same melody* as Der Kommissar. Yikes. Gonna have to check that one out... Posted by: qdpsteve at October 02, 2025 01:22 AM (/p+XQ) 506

I love btw that Laura Branigan's "Gloria" has been retrofitted into a "girl power" anthem.

And he said he "I didn't see that," talking about the top brass assembly, like he didn't want to be associated with it -- wormy style. Posted by: Soothsayer =============== To me, that was more like "Why are you asking me, dummy? Go ask someone who was there." His whole affect smacked of exasperation and annoyance. The lyrics of Tozzi's version are quite different. "Gloria" is a fantasy woman created in the mind of the singer. He becomes obsessed with this fantasy and goes of the deep end. He vows to search the world for his Gloria. Laura Brannigan's version was going to be the same theme, with genders reversed. But they decided to keep the name and change the meaning around. It was Gloria who was the crazy friend. If they had gone with the original theme, the title of the song was going to be "Mario". Imagine her singing "Gloria" but with "Mario". publius, mamma mia! ;-)
Glad they changed it. I think we've all known someone delusional, who we wanted to brutally confront with the truth. That's what seems to be happening in the song. Posted by: qdpsteve at October 02, 2025 01:38 AM (/p+XQ) 515

There's a lot of songs with lyrical content that, when you deep-dive into it, are... disturbing.
Listen to "Clair" by Gilbert O'Sullivan sometime. Was a huge hit in 1972. And Gil is professing his romantic longings for a girl who is... FIVE YEARS OLD!!!!! Posted by: qdpsteve at October 02, 2025 01:39 AM (/p+XQ) 517
Holy Diver may have incomprehensible lyrics, but it's still 6000% better than almost anything within the last decade. Modern metal wishes it had the chops of RJD. Bunch of Greek homos.

Tozzi and Laura Brannigan together: https://is.gd/tMhCA3 She does Gloria at the end, her version. She comes out about 2 mins in, and does a little duet with Tozzi with a different song.
