CCP engineering - "Tofu-dreg project" is a phrase used in the Chinese-speaking world to describe a very poorly constructed CCP buildings, sometimes called just "Tofu buildings". The phrase is notably used referring to buildings that collapsed -- the Bangkok Audit Office skyscraper collapse initiated by aftershocks from the March 2025 Myanmar

Eromero, I would kind of like to, but it's a complicated situation.
My father has basically disowned my entire family, in favor of his 'new' wife's family. (To said group's credit, they have told my sister, the only person in my family that they've spoken to anywhere near recently, that they think it'd be nice if he had more of a relationship with us.) He is entirely cocooned in that 'new' family to the point that none of us can even get messages to him. His 'new' wife intercepts everything first, and we have no idea what he ever sees or doesn't see. My dad *loved* rock and R&B from the early 1960s, and a few years ago, a bottle-green vinyl LP came out of the Booker T & The MGs album, Green Onions. I got a copy and loved it, and was thinking of buying another copy, then sending it to my dad, both to prove I still thought of him sometimes, *and* see if I could ever get a response. I suppose I could still do it, although my family is *not* optimistic I'd ever hear anything back. Anyway like I said: it's complicated. And it didn't help that for several years after my father first abandoned my family (in 1984), I and my sisters barely missed him. Posted by: qdpsteve at September 25, 2025 08:37 PM (/p+XQ) 150

Evening, AoSHQ adherents! I'm back at my hotel room after getting myself lost. I drove out to the nearby Walmart; no problem, and to a diner for some ice cream. I thought I knew how to get back home. But I missed the turn for my street. Evansville does not light streets well, and they don't believe in putting up street name signs at every major intersection. And when they do, those signs are rarely well-lit. I found myself on an interstate going north, got off at the next exit and beat my way west and then south, until I finally got back to a street I recognized.

That was a theme of the part of the Foundation series that was actually good. Trantor built a geosynchronous station and a large tower to lead to it. That gave the world-city an edge to space other planets might not have. Then it collapsed. Yes yes, this was a Babel reference, but geosynchronous orbits are actual SF. I am trying to think of a precedent. Holocaust, of course. Taiping Rebellion, maybe. The effects of small pox and weasels on the new world. Hell, even the black death was maybe 30%. Venice saw it population decline by 50% over the course of a decade. And society during the black death survived. But 40%, all at once? That would be hell. Manufacturing would be fucked. Count 2 is obstruction of a congressional inquiry, including with false statements. On the surface seems like 1 was redundant/already covered by 2, but whatever. Mark Lenard also played a Klingon in the first movie, ST: The Motion Picture.
I think he thus the only major Star Trek actor to play all three, Romulan, Vulcan, and Klingon. They were kind of feeling their way about Spock for a while, in some early episodes he refers to himself as a "Vulcanian" instead of a Vulcan. He also in one episode says that he had a human ancestor. Finally we find out he is half Vulcan and the son of a famous ambassador yet Kirk was apparently unaware of it. I think that with seminomadic groups like a lot of Indians at the time, if some Basque or French sailor showed up with the sniffles, the Indians had a big problem.
I think it was Michael Mann's 1491 mentioned this, that plagues from the Old World were ravaging the east coast of North America even when Old World fishermen were just there to... fish, or trade. After a certain point the natives refused to trade with the white man directly, just laying out their goods (beaver pelts etc) where the white traders could drop their own goods next to them. So, yeah; villages just randomly emptying out was a thing. Especially if some rival village could take the opportunity to hit the sick village when they were down. Pam Bondi Makes Life Harder for Some of the Criminals Who Received Biden Commutations
Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the transfer of eight former death row inmates to the U.S. Penitentiary Administrative Maximum Facility in Florence, Colorado, known as ADX or “supermax.” These individuals had their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment by President Biden in December 2024, a decision that drew sharp backlash for overlooking the gravity of their crimes and the pain of victims’ families. The move places them among some of the most dangerous offenders in federal custody, including terrorists like Ramzi Yousef and drug lords like Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, in a facility designed for extreme isolation and security. https://tinyurl.com/3hns8wnh Posted by: Captain Fantastic at September 25, 2025 09:46 PM (VPPG8) 344

Of all the Star Treks (and I consider "all" to be TOS, TNG, DS9, and Voyager, with Enterprise reluctantly added), my favorite characters of the whole thing are Elim Garek of DS9, and The Doctor from Voyager.
Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at September 25, 2025 *** Garak -- "Plain and simple Garak"-- was the Cardassian tailor who always denied he had been a spy, right? Peter Allan Fields, who produced or was story editor on DS9, had been one of the cleverest and most ingenious writers for The Man From U.N.C.L.E. almost thirty years before. And MfU was famous for its tailor shop front to the headquarters in NYC. So making Garak a tailor/spy --- and, I understand, putting a "Del Floria's" sign on the station promenade -- was Fields' nod to the show that got him started. Yes, indeed. And it turned out at the end he was the actual son of Tain, the head of the Cardassian Obsidian Order. Andrew Robinson played him, and played him well. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at September 25, 2025 09:58 PM (w6EFb) 360
