While serving in the Navy, one of my sons was invited to tour a brand new Chinese Destroyer during a port call. Many spaces were off-limits of course but J. told me that many of the welds that he could see were third rate, 'watertight' hatches weren't, and much of the machinery and deck weapons were obviously very poorly maintained.

Unfortunately I had a horrible relationship with my dad at the time, and probably spent more time being resentful of him than enjoying the beauty. Result is that I don't remember much about the park; same is true about our visit to Grand Canyon.

Hope to return someday, preferably within the next couple years.

My father has basically disowned my entire family, in favor of his 'new' wife's family. (To said group's credit, they have told my sister, the only person in my family that they've spoken to anywhere near recently, that they think it'd be nice if he had more of a relationship with us.)

He is entirely cocooned in that 'new' family to the point that none of us can even get messages to him. His 'new' wife intercepts everything first, and we have no idea what he ever sees or doesn't see.

My dad *loved* rock and R&B from the early 1960s, and a few years ago, a bottle-green vinyl LP came out of the Booker T & The MGs album, Green Onions. I got a copy and loved it, and was thinking of buying another copy, then sending it to my dad, both to prove I still thought of him sometimes, *and* see if I could ever get a response. I suppose I could still do it, although my family is *not* optimistic I'd ever hear anything back.

Anyway like I said: it's complicated. And it didn't help that for several years after my father first abandoned my family (in 1984), I and my sisters barely missed him.

The way things are going in California, we should expect a lot more sinkholes soon in Malibu, Venice, and other spots.

There's already whole sections of coastline highway in Big Sur (not sure if it's PCH or Highway 1) that have been closed off and impassible for years now, because of huge sinkholes that Sacramento doesn't want to spend the money to fix.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been fun to watch. It has Captain Pike, Spock, Uhura, Nurse Chapel who is a war veteran hottie, young Scotty joined this year and Lieutenant Kirk makes appearances.

I loved TNG, but I have to admit it did not get its legs under it and begin to run its own race until the episode with the Binars, the little digital guys who steal the Enterprise for (to them) good and sufficient reasons.

TNG's second year, they did "creepy" stories; in the third, they really came into their own, and gave us more gems than clunkers almost until the end.
