Woke broke the bookstore.
The radical Lower East Side shop that lured drug addicts to its storefront by offering free clothing, food and Narcan suddenly shut down Tuesday -- sparking internal warfare and finger pointing.
Without warning, Bluestockings Cooperative announced that it would permanently shut down after more than 26 years, stating that "daily operations are unfortunately no longer sustainable on multiple fronts."

Bluestockings came under intense outrage from its posh Lower East Side neighborhood, which transformed into a "zombie apocalypse" of strung-out junkies shooting up in broad daylight who were drawn to the bookstore's free and indiscriminate services.
The self-described "radically inclusive" shop was a state-recognized Opiate Overdose Prevention Program and offered "harm reduction services" like Narcan, drug-testing strips and a used needle-drop off bin -- which neighbors alleged enabled the junkies.
In recent years, Bluestockings plunged into around $100,000 in debt to its publishers and book distributors, according to reports.

Neighbors, however, celebrated the closure and expressed hope that its termination would finally usher out the five regulars who have turned Suffolk Street into a drug den.
"It's going to be a plus," said Marie, 68, who has lived on the block for her entire life.
"I heard they were giving out free needles, which is a good thing and a bad thing because everyone knew where to go, but I guess no one was overdosing from a bad needle ... You see the [drug] exchanges in front of your face."
The retired meter maid admitted that the issue has lessened in recent years, but that the street -- which houses a pre-school -- fills up with homeless addicts at night. Police pass through during the day more frequently, she added.

Numerous "worker-owners" of the cooperative flooded the comments section of the Bluestocking's closing announcement to claim they had not been consulted before they were fired from their gigs, a move they described as "violent" and racially-charged.
"My collective of in-store workers, all melanated POC, did not make this decision. the white folks on the lease who are former worker owners made this decision without consulting any of us. hold the white folks attempting to act like this was a collective process accountable. this is false and white violence," one employee by the name of Dheivanai claimed.

There was no "consensus" between workers and owners over whether the owners would add to their $100,000+ debt to keep the radical queer melanated POC feminists on the payroll. And then the owners, who are paying all the bills, made the "violent" white decision to stop losing money.

All of this is very reminiscent of the Philadelphia coffee shop run by radical queer folx that BlackOrchid brought to our attention a couple of years ago.

The workers do not call themselves workers. They call themselves "worker-stewards" -- the latter indicating that they are the caretakers of the property. In other words, they're implying some kind of Squatter's Rights to continue occupying the store while also receiving a wage for not working very much at all.

The "black folx" further allege that the owners' decision to shut the store down is a "violent legal force" by white people. The "worker-steward" then emphasizes that this is "extremely violent."

Let me explain: Let's say you were put in charge of a company that you yourself didn't patronize. It's not your style, it's not your taste.

Do you read studies and talk to customers to find out why they like the company's offerings?

Or do you solipsistically, narcissistically decide to remake the company wholesale to appeal to you because you're angry that not every single corporation in the world caters exclusively to your tastes?

The first option is the professional, real-CEO option.

The second option is the unprofessional, narcissistic, self-obsessed childish option.

And companies keep appointing incompetent DEI girlbosses who decide that they don't like the products which have made the corporation a titan and so they're going to change it all to appeal to themselves and their sorority sister c*nts.

The reason I don't go anymore is the price. Simple breakfast food shouldn't be that expensive. Also, they stopped supplying the boysenberry syrup and that pissed me off.

The restaurants were always just an offshoot of the main operation selling sausage to groceries at the factory. I think Bob only had one by the factory for a long time.

Sounds like the common thing where the main office gets lazy and lets bad franchises drag them all down. Friend of mine was a fry cook there and got hugely burned by spilled hot oil. Manager tryed to tell him to gut it out, he told him to go to hell.

161 I've never understood the business case for IHOP. Its only virtue is that it is open when people ought to be asleep. The food is mediocre on a good night. The place has the ambience of a bus depot. The servers all act like they are on parole or in between hooking gigs or burglary jobs. The customers are drunken riffraff and a brawl is always a possibility. I assume the managers have Narcan just in case you collapse before your rooty tooty fresh and fruity combo shows up. I've cruised through small, charming Newburgh, IN, and then over the Ohio to Owensboro, KY. I like Owensboro a lot. The roads are better paved, everybody is just as nice as in Evansville, there are plenty of amenities, and you can park downtown without highway robbery. Or paying anything at all, if you look a little bit.

I think ESPN is the best example of under-utilizing an asset EVER. There's a HUGE demand for *sports* programming and information. But there's far LESS demand for "Sports, while we attempt to socially reprogram you into leftist thinking". ESPN should have stuck to baseball, basketball, heavy doses of the NFL, and some golf and hockey and late night strong-man competitions. We never wanted the WNBA. We never wanted "international baseball night" where the Dodgers and Padres played in Mexico city and the entire broadcast was propoganda. We never wanted *women* doing 70% of the "sports analysis". There used to be a rather large independent commie bookstore on State St (the main drag in downtown) in Santa Barbara. One of the biggest bookstores in a town that had LOTS of bookstores. They'd have authors and special events that was all hippie commie idiocy.

Just for laughs I brought a copy of the local weekly arts newspaper to show the family up here in Fresno. My right-wing deathbeast aunt just about choked to death on her tea, she was laughing so hard. Great fun.

I suspect they fell prey to the same sort of crap. They closed down about 15 years ago, and now there's a yuppie Old Navy store in their old retail space.
