His owner is a big fan of The Three Stooges, I presume

German shepherd is so happy to be adopted from the shelter.

Instant dog track. (I've posted this before.)

Helping eight ducklings get over a curb.

Goose seems to be "attacking" people but she's really just trying to get a person to help her rescue her gosling.

Baby elephant knows his name.

Cat is a big fan of The Fall Guy.

Elephants rob a broken-down truck carrying oranges. (The video I've posted before is of elephants robbing a broken-down truck carrying bananas.)

Cat finds a nice woolen blanket to cling to.

Friend, foe, or footwear?

A goofy basset hound tries to smile. Another cute smile.

This duck wants to win the race enough to resort to cheating.

Puppy vs. Roomba.

Advanced dog-cuddling techniques. Not for beginners.

Dogs are so excited to be reunited with people they haven't seen for just a week or two.

A magpie plays with her two dog brothers.

On the other hand: Many dogs are not fond of your pet bird at all.

IMHO, Lindsey did the all-time best solo music of anyone from Fleetwood Mac. *Not* Stevie, who was always doing this strange PowerGirl bit in singles like "Stand Back." Had the impression she wanted to be a superhero, not a singer.

18 I did not pay attention to FM at the time, although we had a cooy of Kiln House and the first album with BN. I had shingles this summer and listened to an audio book by Carol Harris, Lindsey's squeeze after Stevie. At this point, I've read way too much and bought too many CDs. But it's a pleasant topic to argue on the internet and the Stevie vs Lindsey fans aren't shooting at each other

Posted by: Notsothoreau at September 24, 2025 07:51 PM (kUxzU)

19 gKWVE, oh man. There's a reason that the studios where they were recording Rumours and Tusk, were called a "cocaine blizzard."

Stevie, at one point then, was also dating the very troubled brother of Brian Wilson, Dennis. A lot of people blame her, and the Mac, for Dennis Wilson eventually succumbing to drugs in about 1983.

Listened on a drive today to Rachmaninoff's The Bells, a choral symphony setting of Poe's poem. The performance was Ormandy's, sung in English.

The poem was translated into Russian and set to music. To perform it in English required translating the Russian version back to English. To use Poe's original is impossible; the words don't fit the musical structure.

They patched it up, then broke up again during Rumours. Mick then had an affair with Stevie and cheated on her with her friend Sara Recor, who he later married.

43 Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk" album was originally called "Penguin" because the entire band had been so high for so long they believed hostile penguins were massing outside their recording studio. When this turned out to be true, Warner Brothers, bowing to the demands of Big Penguin, changed the title and insisted the title track be re-recorded. When the band members refused, studio penguins were brought in to immortalize the lyrics in the version we know today.

Premature book thread comment. I'm reading The Luck of Barry Lyndon by William Makepiece Thackeray, a picaresque novel that is the basis of the Kubrick movie.

A really great book. The movie follows it closely enough, except for the ending. The book goes into more detail about the horrors of army life and Lady Lyndon is presented far less sympathetically. A fascinating read.

They look like rundown parts of New Orleans, and not in a good way. I've learned that electricity prices here are insane -- one businessman told me he has a three-bedroom house and his power bills average $400/month. Uh, time for a re-think on the relocation?

Tomorrow I'll gas up -- I have a Shell card, but there is but one Shell station in all of Evansville -- then drive down along the river and over to the Kentucky side of the river, Owensboro. The Street View seems to indicate that it's nice. We'll see.

If had to drive between Louisville and Evansville, he may still be shell shocked.

I have driven a lot of places in a lot of states in my life. The stretch between Jeffersonville and Evansville is one of the worst.

Hell, I fucking love Dallas to El paso by comparison.

118 Listened on a drive today to Rachmaninoff's The Bells, a choral symphony setting of Poe's poem. The performance was Ormandy's, sung in English.

The poem was translated into Russian and set to music. To perform it in English required translating the Russian version back to English. To use Poe's original is impossible; the words don't fit the musical structure.

124 Yes, I circled through the downtown area of Evansville -- there is actually parking available for free, something the "leaders" of Da Swamp do not understand -- and talked to some shop owners. Bought a collection of three Chekhov short stories in a slim volume for $5.

Then I drove back through some areas I would not want to break down in and got to an east-west boulevard. That brought me to a diner on the east side called G.D. Ritzy's. A hamburger and a "junior scoop" of ice cream cost me all of $7.50. I made sure to tell the manager when I left, "Good food, and reasonably priced." His face lit up.

125 I smelled something burning from outside during Jeopardy!
When Jeopardy!was done, wife noticed a cop car with lights flashing across the street. Subject house had a lot of people outside, driveway full, people leaving. Heard the cop ask if everyone was all right. A little kid was heading back in the house and the cop said, "stay outside, there might be smoke".

Then four fire trucks rolled up, one rescue truck, the supervisor's pickup, and a handful of other cars.

A couple guys went in, mask and tank equipped, and everyone else stood around.

Nothing dramatic, probably a kitchen fire, or a dumbass doing something.

_STEREOTYPE_ON
The house was bought by a couple Hispanic guys a few years ago. There is at least one Mom there with a couple kids. They are quiet, don't bother anyone, and just sunk some money into replacing flooring.

Today, when gathered outside, there were at least ten people there, about half kids. This was after the extra cars left the driveway.

So, maybe a party going on, who the hell knows.
At least the place didn't burn to the ground.

132 Interesting bit at the top story in insty:
This incident was weird, but not for the surface reason. The weird thing wasn’t this retiree I had met ten minutes earlier casually wishing death on a political figure supported by roughly half the country. No, the truly bizarre thing was how pedestrian this kind of occurrence had become in my own life, how inured to it I had become. It should be unusual for someone to make inflammatory political remarks to a fellow countryman after having known him only ten minutes. But it’s not. It happens thousands of times every day in professional middle-class circles like the ones I travel in.

Someone needs to tell the AF that they have two choices.

- Quit being whiney bitches, fly A-10s and support the ground troops.
- Don't object to the Army having their own fixed wing pilots.

Last year 36 of the 200 birds died and it was suspected they died of Avian flu. No tests were done. Canuckistan ag rules demand that the whole flock be destroyed, even though the remaining birds are healthy and have no signs of avian flu, after more than 200 days.

One of the big players on the US side of the MkUltra project during the 1950s and beyond, can’t recall exactly who off the top of my head (but a genuine POS nonetheless), stated flatly that mental illness is “contagious”, just as you surmise.

Their ideological heirs have been driving the populace crazy or into self-destructive behavior ever since. Once you know what you’re looking at, and why, it starts to click.

What was even more sobering, is he claimed that while mental illness is “contagious” in the social sense, he did believe it was actually inheritable from a genetic standpoint once “caught”.

246 Loved the baby deer and Mama.

We have a herd we normally see in the winter's snow. One night we were helping put the grand kids in carseats and a herd of 11 or so came running up the hill. They live in the gully below us, I guess. We are about a mile from the start of the mountains in the foothills, with green areas around us.

This summer my husband came home and saw a wee spotted baby dear peeking out by the garbage cans. It was eating plums off the tree and ground with Mama. My guy was thrilled as he gets irritated when the high purple plums splat on the concrete near the garage. The deer leave the pits.

This was not a good year for plums as there was wind and a freeze when they bloomed. I wanted to freeze some for tarts and make jam. So he rejoices in a bad year and I am a bit bummed, but glad the deer liked them.

Where were we? Oh the Marines, they may grumble but in the end they'll take the hit for the greater good. Maintenance and storage will be tight though, maybe we could throw in a small and insignificant counter-drone cough-AI-cough refit to ease the transition.

Yeah it's ironic that military bases are basically gun free zones. I remember we had a surprise barracks inspection, I'm standing out in the parking lot in formation with a 9mm tucked behind my back in my PT shorts. Sweating bullets.

288 I think the reasons for the safety paranoia are made evident once you've been a Platoon SGT.

I remember one day outside the armory we were cleaning weapons. SGT Bivens thought it would be a great idea to draw bayonets out for familiarization.
So I've my razor sharp bayonet attached to my M-16A2 but the damn release latch to get into the butt stock (where the PMCS tools are stored) I'm applying more pressure, leaning into ...and my hand slips and all that torque drives my shoulder down, along with my head right past the bayonet about an inch from my eye.

I look around (because I know I just fcked up) and
SGT Bivens is just sitting there staring at me with a "Father why have you forsaken me" look of incredulous shock. Sometimes the circuses and monkeys belong to you and your future is entirely in the hands of a senior Corporal who almost fell face first on his own bayonet.

Oh keep this between us. With this story, not one but two roasted LAV-25 engines (at $750k a pop), to say nothing about shutting down a CAX and forcing the entire air wing to u-turn back to base... the fuel costs alone ouch, people might get the wrong idea

Posted by: Fenrisulven at September 24, 2025 10:34 PM (ciYHQ)

289 But if you are ever running an op with Marines and they go fanatical over marking diesel and 30 weight cans so they can be differentiated by touch when refueling the generator in pitch black conditions, that was me
