Tuesday Overnight Open Thread - September 23, 2025 [Doof]

The time has arrived for the Tuesday ONT. Open thread, as always. Content awaits those who are interested. What is on YOUR mind tonight?

Congratulations, John Stossel

A billion views on Stossel TV. Impressive!

John Stossel is an old school journalist. He calls out bullsh*t no matter who agrees or disagrees. He has adapted well to the internet age after leaving legacy broadcast TV. Good for you, John!

This AI interface is NOT asshoe!

Man asks AI: "If you were a human, how would you raise a child that doesn't become another broken adult?"

AI: "I wouldn't follow the current educational system because the system is designed to raise obedient consumers."

"Instead of processed food, I'd teach them to grow their own food... Instead of trusting pills, I'd show them how to listen to their body... and fix root causes."

"I would teach them to question authority, to ask who profits from this information, and to recognise propaganda when it's packaged as normal."

"I'd raise them with challenges and struggle because mental and physical muscles aren't built in comfort."

"Most of all, I'd teach them to be sovereign in money, mind and body because the future won't be kind to the dependent."

Not a single piece of bad advice there.

Man Gets Head Stuck in Traffic Light After Crashing into It

doof-traffic-light-head.jpg

A Chinese man went viral after spending almost an hour with his head stuck in a traffic light after crashing into it with an electric scooter.

A shockingly bizarre traffic accident got a lot of attention on Chinese social media last month, when a young man driving an electric scooter crashed into a temporary traffic light in the city of Chengdu. Following the impact, the man’s head somehow became stuck inside the traffic light, and firefighters were called to free him from the unusual cage. That was easier said than done, however, as even the first responders spent around 40 minutes cutting away at the metal casing to safely release the man’s head. The man was then taken to a local hospital and made a full recovery, but he’ll have a much tougher time recovering from the hilarious online jokes the incident inspired.

Booze News

Kentucky distillery bounces back from massive flood that briefly halted bourbon production

The long history of bourbon production at Buffalo Trace Distillery has been connected to the Kentucky River — summed up as a blessing and curse by a plaque on the grounds.

In the 1800s, long before the Buffalo Trace name was attached to the distillery, the river served as a floating highway to bring in grain and other production essentials and to transport barrels of whiskey to markets along the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. Even today, river water cools down production equipment. But the river flowing past the distillery flashed its destructive side in April.

A massive flood, caused by days of unrelenting rain, sent the Kentucky River surging over its banks, inundating most of the 200-plus-acre distillery grounds on its main campus in Frankfort. Nearly every phase of production was impacted, as were several warehouses where whiskey is aged.

***

Five months later, production at the distillery is back to normal, including of some of the most sought-after bourbons. Its lineup includes the namesake flagship brand, Buffalo Trace, as well as Eagle Rare, W.L. Weller and Blanton’s. Pappy Van Winkle bourbons are distilled and aged at Buffalo Trace while the Van Winkle family remains in control of the coveted brand.

The distillery recently filled its 9 millionth barrel of bourbon since Prohibition, just two and a half years since filling the 8 millionth barrel. It has also introduced new whiskeys to its catalogue and is renovating a campus building into a cafe and events center.

Check out the whole thing. Long article and some before/after photos.

Miller Brewing Co. owner Molson Coors names Rahul Goyal as new CEO

"I’m ready to take on both the opportunities and the challenges ahead of us knowing that we have the brands, the people and the passion to deliver on our ambitions," Goyal said. "I recognize that we have a lot of work to do, and in the coming months I will share more on my vision for how we will drive growth and carry the legacy of this great company forward to reach new heights.”

Hopefully, for the company's sake, the new guy has kept up with the marketing disasters of a competitor in the industry and will choose a different strategy.

DJ Doof - This Date in History Edition
(from thisdayinmusic.com)

Born on this date in 1930: American singer, songwriter and pianist Ray Charles. He is regarded as one of the most iconic and influential singers in history, and was often referred to by contemporaries as "The Genius".

On this date in 1980: Bob Marley performed his final show at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh. Two days ahead of the concert, Marley had collapsed in New York’s Central Park while jogging. He was told to immediately cancel the rest of his US tour dates, but flew to Pittsburgh for one final appearance. Marley collapsed during the set and, just one year later, succumbed to an aggressive form of cancer

-----

Also on this date, in 1977, Steely Dan released their sixth studio album - Aja.

Number 73 on Apple Music's 100 Best List

Donald Fagen and Walter Becker’s approach to recording had evolved from a fixed group of people playing a set of songs from start to finish to a piecemeal process in which they tried out multiple players for the same part until they found a satisfactory combination—all before doing it all over again on the next song. As sophisticated as the process was, Steely Dan never sounded as direct as they do on Aja. There’s the R&B of “Josie,” the bounce of “Black Cow,” and the fact that “Peg” felt like actual dance music rather than a dissertation on it.

Really just an outstanding album. Give it a listen!

Entire Aja album

I actually saw Ray Charles perform at a department store, Lazarus by name, in downtown Columbus way back in the 90's. Just a short set and it wasn't announced so everyone was very surprised. It was during the lunch hour - I think he was playing at the Ohio Theater that night.

A foster home has been found for the two poor Borzoi boys dumped in a shelter. The lady of the house is a vet tech, so they'll get good care.

They're both suffering from severe flea infestations and neither one has any hair. Neither one is microchipped and we have no idea how old they are.

We could have made room here for them where they would be comfortable and well provided for. But they'll be fine where they're going after they've been treated.

152 Had a restless night last night. Decided I didn't like the solution I had half-implemented for steering column lower support in the Avanti. Took it all out again today, and took the whole column out, separating it at the rag joint. Hmmm, those nuts weren't very tight, at all. And if there is any place that a guy should use self-locking nuts, the two bolts in a steering rag joint have to top the list.

With the steering column out of the way, access to work on other stuff is waay better. I made super-bright LED bulbs for the turn-signal telltales, and installed them. Huge improvement! Started messing with the pedal assembly for the cable throttle. I have mapped out where it has to go, and I will have to fab a small bracket for it. And I found another stupid Bubba trick. Fiberglass cars have to have lots of ground wires. So there was a white #10 ground wire running from the dash harness, through a hole in the firewall, and bolted to the brake booster. Which is bolted to the firewall, and the pedal hanger, which is bolted to the dash brace. So the dash was grounded to...itself.

158 While in the area, stop in at Dietrich's Meats in Lenhartsville for pickled pigs feet and snouts, scrapple, ring baloney, and hams. Kutztown isn't then far away so a stop at Letterman's Diner for manhole sized pancakes is a must. Now you're getting close to Shady Maple Grocery and Smorgasbord. Any store with two entire aisles devoted to potato chips and pretzels should be on any Moron's bucket list.

159 Have long long believed that durable simple well-made easily repairable consumer big-ticket products have a large (and currently completely unserved) market.

Isn't some car company about to make a simple no-frills pick-up truck?

Have a 15-year+ old gas grill that's going strong. Replaceable key components (flame bars, synthetic briquets and their racks). Gas knobs/igniters (original) still work fine. (BBQs Galore house line, Capt. Cook) Grates are beautiful and would last a century.

I despise crap that doesn't last. And can confirm that as recently as 30 years ago, stuff was made right - have now replaced all the kitchen appliances, and they were bought in 1990.

They are the enemies of all humanity. For this reason we have begun to use the supreme power of the US Military to destroy Venezuelan terrorists, led by Nicolas Maduro. To every terrorist thug smuggling poisonous drugs into the USA, we will blow you out of existence. That's what we are doing, we have no choice, I believe we lost 300,000 people last year to drugs. Each boat we sink could kill 25,000 people. We will not let that happen.

At extreme cost and expense Europe reduced its own carbon footprint by 37%. Think about that; great job, Europe! But you cost yourself a lot of jobs, a lot of factories closed, but you reduced by 37% but it's been totally wiped out and then some by a global increase of 54%, much of it from China which now produces more CO2 than all the other developed nations in the world. So all these countries are working so hard on their carbon footprint, which is nonsense by the way.

241 So there was a white #10 ground wire running from the dash harness, through a hole in the firewall, and bolted to the brake booster. Which is bolted to the firewall, and the pedal hanger, which is bolted to the dash brace. So the dash was grounded to...itself.

I've told this story before.

I got a low-flow washing machine ONLY because it was recommended by Consumer Reports (bah) and I thought I'd save a little money on water.

It ate my clothes.

My mother, who is a force of nature, forced them to take it back. She told them to deliver one that didn't have "a brain." The worn-down representative told her you can't find appliances without "electronics" these days.

When the guy came to install the new, different model, I asked him where I could get a washing machine that didn't have a brain. He said there's a guy three towns over who refurbishes old Speed Queens. They go for more than their original price.

For my steering column lower brace, I am going to cut out an oblong of heavy-gauge body metal, drill a 2 1/8" hole in it for the column tube, and slip it on over the tube. Reinstall the column to the rag joint and the dash brace, bolt the steel plate to the firewall, and tack weld it to the column jacket. Take it out again, do a nice fillet weld, paint it up nice, and bolt 'er in.

This time I tried "sulfuring" the fruit, I burned a smidgen of sulfur and salt peter in the fruit dryer after I loaded it with sliced pears. It is keeping the fruit from browning as the old books say it will, and it seems to be keeping the mold at bay too.

I have been surprised a little too much over the last 20 years by dudes who I thought would be normal but ended up being of the body. The old guard is ok, but the newer generations are a crap shoot. The european bands seem to like their "Social" freebies. I spent enough time with enough of them to see that. 335 269 Yuengling is the oldest American brewery, founded in 1829. So what were we drinking before the Germans got here with their “beer”? It was cider! That was what Johnny Appleseed was planting: not apples 🍎 for eating or for the teacher’s desk. He was planting apple trees for brewing the apples into cider! And he did it along the frontier to give settlers one more reason to head West: there were apples waiting to be made into cider!

Definitely cider was the drink of choice back then. And, sure enough, apples were the catalyst. But, don't forget about the rum. Blackbeard (Edward Teach) and William Kidd had connections (and family) in Philadelphia and New England, and somehow rum became rather popular in both those areas. It is said that drinking cider, rum, and ales was safer than drinking the water back then. So, it was pragmatic.

Vigilant Fox@Vigilant Fox

Jimmy Kimmel begins to tear up as he says the moment Erika Kirk forgave her husband’s killer on Sunday “touched him deeply.”

He called it an example the world should follow.

“On Sunday, Erika Kirk forgave the man who shot her husband. She forgave him.”

“That is an example we should follow.”

[Applause]

“If you believe in the teachings of Jesus, as I do, there it was. That’s… that’s it. A selfless act of grace, forgiveness from a grieving widow.”

“It touched me deeply, and… I hope it… I hope it touches many, and if there’s anything we should take from this tragedy to carry forward, I hope it can be that, and not this.”

419 AOP, you would be largely correct that doo-wop singers did every part of the song, even the instrumental sections. That's because the bands were oftentimes made up of *really* poor kids who couldn't even afford to hire additional musicians for their recording sessions.

Here's some examples of great doo-wop from the 1950s and early 60s:

Mrs B had become soooo conditioned over the years that she could literally pass out on the couch with me hammering away on guitar at any hour. If I so much as drop a frigging bic lighter on the table she will stir. I don't even know what to make of that. I don't exactly play low. I don't use practice amps. There is a lot to be said for that. I spent decades playing. Covid pretty much killed the last band I was involved in. A friend of mine is a stellar bass player who was in some of the bands I was in. He comes over every saturday night and we just play. I swear we sometimes have more fun than when we gigged. The funny part, my comment about Mrs B above sleeping through this shit. A few weeks ago she passed out on the living room couch. I have serious guitar and bass amps in the family room, and the bass player showed up late, around 10pm. We hammered for almost 3 hours. The next day she asks "did he ever show up, did you guys play? (???) I'm like, you didn't frigging hear it??? Unreal.

Sadly, their broken brains are destructive. Our immune systems depend on some minimal levels of interaction with others. A healthy immune system routinely fights off bugs, an immune system that sees too few bugs can't calibrate and may even lead to autoimmune disorders.

I would argue mask mandates make the population sicker and more isolated psychologically, which is bad, unless you're into that sort of thing.

Ben Afleck's and Jennifer Garner's daughter Violet is a broken whackjob. She spoke at the UN, advocating for mask mandates globally. She still wears a mask, 5 years later.

It amazes me how the Covid fear just broke people.

Nah-- might 'escape the zone'

Maybe a big, beautiful fence of containment. Then, rounding up of all inside, for deportation to Gaza.

At first he was making me cringe with all the self-glorification. "These wars had been going on for 17 yeears, and I stopped them, I stopped them in a day, I got them to make deals. Everyone said I couldn't do it, I did it."

Then I thought, fukkit, make them all sit there and suffer politely. Apply maximum pain. Everyone might as well know who he is and who they'll be dealing with.

> be Elon
> co-found OpenAI “for humanity”
> watch Altman flip it into Microsoft’s lootbox
> quietly.exe
> launch xAI, poach the best GPU whisperers from DeepMind, OpenAI, Anthropic
> raise $5B faster than a Dogecoin pump
> find abandoned Electrolux factory in Memphis
> “perfect, already wired for toasters”
> slap 200k H100s in 122 days, call it Colossus
>local grid: “lol no”
> rent every diesel generator on the continent, create 200 exaflops cloud of doom
> train Grok-1, ship in 4 months
> train Grok-2, ship in 8
> both still think 2+2=“potato,” whatever
> Grok-3 drops, 10× compute, actually passes math
> turn RL compute dial to 11 for Grok-4, pre-training budget now just the reinforcement budget
> release Grok Code, clocks 1 Trillion tokens on OpenRouter before Sonnet 4 finishes its morning coffee
> Scam Altman tweeting “competition is healthy” from his 10-GPU pod
> mfw we liberated the toaster factory and it became Skynet

522 I practically lived on Aja for about two years on college. That's the sort of music one can disappear into when required to do so by the demands of intellectual agony. I don't think I've ever felt so tortured by anything since 3rd year Design Studio, nor so comforted by that sort of cocoon music.

It certainly invokes a time of trial for me, and also soothes the trial.
