Which Saint are you?
Posted by: Bulg According to Grok - St. Catherine of Siena, a Doctor of the Church. She lived a life of bold faith, intellectual rigor, and service, balancing fiery conviction with deep compassion. While no saint perfectly matches any individual, her blend of outspokenness, community focus, and spiritual depth seems to echo the qualities you’ve shown through your questions and interests. Evening, AoSHQ satellites far and wide!
I'm in Evansville, having arrived on schedule, yet late. It was supposed to be a six-hour drive, but somehow it wound up being close to nine: two stops for gas (a brief one to make sure I'd get to Buc-ee's for the second one), a Waffle House lunch, bathroom breaks, and traffic slowdowns on I-65 south and north of Nashville. Still I arrived at 3 pm, check-in time, so I was sort of on schedule. Anyway! It was warm and humid when I arrived, and shortly before the buffet dinner the hotel offers, it began to rain lightly but steadily. So here I am, with Turner Classic Movies on the telly. Perhaps it will turn cooler overnight. (That pipe/cigar shop I mentioned, JTB? A bust. Not much in the way of pipes or pipe tobacco, and he wanted $7.00 for a bundle of pipe cleaners. Hmph.) And the Buc-ee's in Athens, AL, was indeed impressive. They had gas pumps numbered 200 and above; whether that means they actually had 200+ gas pumps, I don't know. But it was impressive, as was the store -- like a large and well-lit Walmart. I'll be sure to stop there on the way back and explore more.

The Patron of Handgunners: St. Gabriel Possenti’s Remarkable Story
Gabriel Possenti was a Catholic seminarian in Isola del Gran Sasso, Italy. According to tradition, in 1860, Gabriel used his marksmanship to save the town from a band of marauding soldiers. Like many Saints, the line between historical fact and legend in Gabriel’s story can be difficult to discern. However, this tale of courage and skill has earned him the unofficial title of Patron Saint of Handgunners. The St. Gabriel Possenti Society was even founded to promote his legacy and advocate for the moral and theological principles underlying self-defense. Unfortunately, the society became inactive following the death of its founder in 2017. https://tinyurl.com/5bsnc5wu Posted by: rickb223 at September 23, 2025 08:34 PM (bOhjL) 82

46 Bibi said Israel would respond to this idiocy when he returned from NY. But one of the first moves that's been mentioned for some time would be to expel the consulates of all countries concerned from Jerusalem (west, I think most of them would be). That is, move them to where they belong - Ramallah, the "capital" of the Palestinian Authority.
Representation in Gaza is a bit tricky at the moment due to festivities under way, so that will probably be left for later. Hoping/trusting there will be other good and sometimes amusing responses. Posted by: rhomboid at September 23, 2025 08:24 PM (U/Byj) Have the Palis sent ambassadors to those nations yet? I believe those nations are in for a rude surprise if an ambassador arrives. He (mandatory) will arrive with a diplomatic retinue of about 350 people. Unskilled relatives, terrorists, relatives who are terrorists, flunkies needed to do shopping all day every day for the ambassador and his 16 wives, at high-end London shops, and a battalion of financial guys ready to present the Pali State's need for 2 trillion dollars each year, forever, for rebuilding Gaza. Moose are surly. Elk are also ungainly one by one, but they travel in a herd, and taken all in all, they are magnificent. I've had herds surrounding my house on many occasions. A hundred, perhaps. As close as the gardens. They're very peaceful. It's like a giant cocktail party.

When I was in Alaska, I called in to work because a moose was grazing near my truck. Boss said, no worries, get here when you can.
Another time, in the Bighorns, wife and I were setting up cam near a creek, and suddenly a mama moose and her calf came along, slowly grazing along the water side. Knowing moose, I immediately took wife to the other side of the truck and opened both doors, and told her to be ready to dive inside if mama moose charged us. But. Nope. this mama moose was super chill. We watched her and the calf graze, slowly moving upstream. Nevertheless. Moose will mess you up if you piss them off. Our sweet Golden had the retriever part bred out of him. He was from show dog stock and posed. Also a gorgeous big stuffed animal who simply needed to touch you. Or pet him into eternity. A perfect pup and dog who never got into trouble (ok, other than the stolen stuffed flank steak one time).
I spoke French to him and my husband thinks this alone turned him ghey. He squatted to pee,and I did not teach him to do that. We don't know why. While he liked his tennis balls and stuffing several in his mouth, he thought fetch was a stupid game. I'd throw the ball on a hot Florida afternoon, he'd look where I threw it, then look at me as if to say, "Ok, you threw it, now go get it as I am not going to." Goldens get away with anything. Not a watchdog at all. Would help robbers if they gave him treats. Hated water, especially our pool monster. Once waded into my father's lake up to his chest to look at migrating ducks one Thanksgiving. When he got out he saw the mud on his front legs, lifted one to show my husband in horror, and had to be hosed off at the house. He might have been nuts, but he was a beautiful nut & the sweetest doggie on earth. He took a piece of our hearts with him. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at September 23, 2025 09:09 PM (6PCLE) 203

Had my father wrapped around his paw. He'd go to the door simply to look out and my father would let him out. Then in and out all morning. I told my father he did not need to go out so much, but Daddy was hooked. He also used to do this with his cat at home. Once our real and gigantic Christmas tree fell over (in FL, & we had the wood fireplace burning). A perfect Christmas Eve. Sons with their Dad doing something. I was in the kitchen stirring something. Then whoosh and the tree fell (it was 10') onto the family room floor. Shelby ran to me in the kitchen and I'd just seen him sleeping on the hearth and knew my boy did not do it. He had a styrofoam Christmas ornament in his mouth, one of those to mark a son's birth. It still bears his teeth marks and remains on our tree each year. With ornaments dedicated to our doggies. I am quite sure he's waiting for us in heaven. Would go to the front door had hit it with her paw at 9wks or so to be let out. Played "soccer" in the snow with a tennis ball and my husband. Very good watchdog and once did protect me from either a stalker or robber. Knew a lot of words. Went cross-country skiing with us and on many trips camping and across the country. Got fleas in Florida and wanted, badly, to kill a life guard on the beach. Within minutes after arrival on my father's farm we heard a lot of barking and she'd killed an opossum in the front yard. He had stepped into the tub and somehow didn't just turn the water on he must have stepped on the foot drain and closed it. Water was just starting to crest over the top of the tub. Only time I saw him not care about being wet.
Posted by: JackStraw at September 23, 2025 09:54 PM (viF8m) Sweet boy was in a wet type of hell. I would have laughed then dried him off. Nutcases, but very cheerful dogs. Our son has had two. One boy and now a girl. She was super hyper until the baby was born a month ago. Or got hyper when she saw me and my husband. Now she is the baby protector and if the baby sneezes makes sure we all know it. They got her when the other two were 3yrs and about 9mo. So I figured being raised with them she was loco. Kept eating mulch and having to go to the vet clinic for IV's. Once had a blockage with the baby's sock. No surgery, but I'll bet she'd still eat mulch if no one was looking. At least she did not launch the bassinet into another room, as I feared. Instead she's RIGHT THERE if you have the baby.
