Close encounters of the grizzly kind. Pandas apparently have no natural predators, and their prey of choice is a leaf, so they've evolved a very laid-back, lazy kind of lifestyle. Moose family walking down the highway. Another baby moose and mama moose.
Penguins jogging. A bison ambles through the Yellowstone parking lot. Teaching a not-so-bright dog how to catch a ball. The Prisoner. Some serious meteors. Sometimes a woman needs to tickle the baby hippo, if you know what I mean. This is one tough Thug Life bird. Raising an orphaned newborn leopard. I'm in Evansville, having arrived on schedule, yet late. It was supposed to be a six-hour drive, but somehow it wound up being close to nine: two stops for gas (a brief one to make sure I'd get to Buc-ee's for the second one), a Waffle House lunch, bathroom breaks, and traffic slowdowns on I-65 south and north of Nashville. Still I arrived at 3 pm, check-in time, so I was sort of on schedule.
Anyway! It was warm and humid when I arrived, and shortly before the buffet dinner the hotel offers, it began to rain lightly but steadily. So here I am, with Turner Classic Movies on the telly. Perhaps it will turn cooler overnight. (That pipe/cigar shop I mentioned, JTB? A bust. Not much in the way of pipes or pipe tobacco, and he wanted $7.00 for a bundle of pipe cleaners. Hmph.)

Humid and rainy here, too. But it isn't like this all the time. Never been to NO, so Idk how to compare the humidity, but it's the midwest. We get hot, cold, wind, some snow (hardly any up here anymore), humidity, dry air -- you know, midwest weather.
We've always lived in the midwest -- Illinois, Michigan, now IN. I liked all of them.
I guess you won't know what the weather really is like until you've lived somewhere. And it changes, anyway.

The NO humidity is thick and drippy. Even when the local weather mavens call it "dry," it ain't. Change, however, would be good -- as long as it happens more than three or four times a year.

JTB, I actually have an unopened tin of HH burley Flake, bought before the recent apocalypse in the pipe tobacco world. I've had so many other blends to try, I haven't gotten to it.
On this trip I brought two pipes, a pouch of St. Bruno, one of Amphora Original, and my two-ounce packet of what I call "Spenser's Blend" from the Country Squire in Jackson, MS.
It's disappointing that this pipe/cigar shop here turned out to be a bust.

Another time, in the Bighorns, wife and I were setting up cam near a creek, and suddenly a mama moose and her calf came along, slowly grazing along the water side. Knowing moose, I immediately took wife to the other side of the truck and opened both doors, and told her to be ready to dive inside if mama moose charged us.
But. Nope. this mama moose was super chill. We watched her and the calf graze, slowly moving upstream.
Nevertheless. Moose will mess you up if you piss them off. Brother was treed by a moose, and the friggin' thing did not go away for hours.

I love the idea of changes in weather instead of one steady-state nasty HOT AND HUMID from March to December.
I will admit that I'm not impressed with the road paving in Evansville so far. It's as inconsistent as that in Da Swamp: surprisingly smooth streets for five blocks, and then "Aargh!" as my car jolts over roughness. Places that get freezing winter weather at least have the excuse of frost heaves, though.

A friend threw the frisbee to me but it sailed over my head. I turned and went to retrieve it just as a large bull emerged from the woods. Speed has never been one of my assets but I set a personal best getting the hell out of there.

He might have been nuts, but he was a beautiful nut & the sweetest doggie on earth. He took a piece of our hearts with him.

Much loved by anyone who had the honor to pet him. Had my father wrapped around his paw. He'd go to the door simply to look out and my father would let him out. Then in and out all morning. I told my father he did not need to go out so much, but Daddy was hooked. He also used to do this with his cat at home.
Once our real and gigantic Christmas tree fell over (in FL, & we had the wood fireplace burning). A perfect Christmas Eve. Sons with their Dad doing something. I was in the kitchen stirring something. Then whoosh and the tree fell (it was 10') onto the family room floor.
Shelby ran to me in the kitchen and I'd just seen him sleeping on the hearth and knew my boy did not do it. He had a styrofoam Christmas ornament in his mouth, one of those to mark a son's birth. It still bears his teeth marks and remains on our tree each year. With ornaments dedicated to our doggies.
I am quite sure he's waiting for us in heaven.

Yes. We are still new here, but, aside from some hot summer days, we love it here. Yesterday was very fall-like. low 70s. We took an overnight trip to Oregon last weekend.
Much of Oregon wants to become a part of "Greater Idaho." Kind of like Western and Northeastern Colorado wanting to become "Greater Wyoming."
Folks are far from content, it seems.

Yeah, Shelby even had a side eye for the fetch deal. I used to laugh and gave up. He sat and rolled over and that was it. He knew he'd get treats.
Our first dog was a German Shepherd/Malamute/Husky mix. My fiance got him "to protect me." In reality he wanted a puppy as he was deprived of pets as a child with his wacko OCD parents. I grew up with everything on a farm.
This puppy was smart. Taught herself to potty train. Would go to the front door had hit it with her paw at 9wks or so to be let out. Played "soccer" in the snow with a tennis ball and my husband. Very good watchdog and once did protect me from either a stalker or robber. Knew a lot of words. Went cross-country skiing with us and on many trips camping and across the country.
Got fleas in Florida and wanted, badly, to kill a life guard on the beach. Within minutes after arrival on my father's farm we heard a lot of barking and she'd killed an opossum in the front yard.
We could freak people out if we told her to "smile." Ha!

Her fellow Siberian and predecessor, Chekov, would sometimes bring the toy back to me. And Chekov's aunt, Tatiana, loved doing it over and over again.

Both of one of our son's dogs were from shelters. Ball fetching lunatics. The current doggie, now back in FL with him and his wife, he thought was a white lab. Turns out a lot of husky and HUGE. I would guess if he was measured lying down 6', or if standing on his hind legs. But still thinks he's a lap dog.
At any pool he will jump in as he loves water. Son sent me a video of him floating in the water and Moose jumping in and dragging his sw___uard shirt to the side to "save" him. He's a good boy, altho a bit nuts. Good with kids and used to them as we think they will be starting their family soon. He was cool with adopting a cat. So he looks fierce but is a pupper.

He sounds very much like my Jack. I got him from a show breeder because I thought that would be a good way to insure he was healthy. And he was right up until cancer.
He was a beautiful Golden. I've had a lot but this guy was just about a perfect example. Other than he almost zero interest in water which is bit odd around here. He was just a big golden ball of love.
My boat slip was at the end of a long pier and I had to pass a couple dozen boats to get to it. Jack would stop and greet everyone. Some even had treats ready just for him. He'd carry a couple tennis balls but chasing after them was not part of the agenda. Great wingman.

Sounds like our boy. He got attention everywhere he went. His "mane" dragged the ground. Long, long hair. From the cream colored English breed...gigantic head.
He slept in a crate in our youngest son's bedroom. When he was tired he'd put himself to bed.
Oddly not afraid of fireworks or thunder. But I'm sure would have made a horrible hunting dog since he did not retrieve anything but our son's dirty socks. Or underwear. We once had a couple we didn't know well (at the time) and he greeted them at the door with a pair of dirty underwear in his mouth. Fortunately they also had a Golden and laughed.

From junior high through college if you are not at war about something you are doing it wrong. Parenting is hard. And our boys were pretty good, all things considered and having me as their mother. I took no crap from them and they knew it.
I once heard them talking quietly (when in HS): "Mom is awful with the small stuff, but cool with the bad stuff." I sort of knew what they were talking about: like clean your rooms, pigs vs staying calm when one crashed his car.

Sorry the pipe shop was disappointing. I think you will like the HH Burley flake. I got a couple of pounds just before it was discontinued and I use it sparingly. When you open it, try it with a cup of good coffee. The combination seems to enhance the natural sweetness of the burley.

Our first Golden was a champion field trial dog. He was a machine and the gun noise didn't phase him at all.
Jack, on the other hand, was a big baby when it came to noise. I was watching the Stanley Cup Playoffs one year and a big thunderstorm broke out. He upstairs to hide, of course. I wanted to go check on him but it was late in the 3rd period and was really into the game.
I waited until the end of the game which was only a few minutes. The storm had passed and I turned onto the steps and he was up top. Soaking wet. He had stepped into the tub and somehow didn't just turn the water on he must have stepped on the foot drain and closed it. Water was just starting to crest over the top of the tub. Only time I saw him not care about being wet.

Not only do I have that blend, I have two tins of Burley London Blend and one of Golden Extra, and a tin of Peterson Irish Flake which I know I have to smpke in very small quantities. It's known to be powerful stuff.

Sweet boy was in a wet type of hell. I would have laughed then dried him off. Nutcases, but very cheerful dogs.
Our son has had two. One boy and now a girl. She was super hyper until the baby was born a month ago. Or got hyper when she saw me and my husband. Now she is the baby protector and if the baby sneezes makes sure we all know it.
They got her when the other two were 3yrs and about 9mo. So I figured being raised with them she was loco. Kept eating mulch and having to go to the vet clinic for IV's. Once had a blockage with the baby's sock. No surgery, but I'll bet she'd still eat mulch if no one was looking. At least she did not launch the bassinet into another room, as I feared. Instead she's RIGHT THERE if you have the baby.
