Trump Announces "Breakthrough" in Autism: Will Warn Women Not to Take Acetaminophen (Tylenol) During Pregnancy
Here's NPR to immediately dismiss the so-far unreleased study and declare that the link between Tylenol use during pregnancy is not "conclusively" proven yet.
The Trump administration is expected to assert later today that use of acetaminophen -- the active ingredient in Tylenol -- can increase the risk of autism when used during pregnancy, despite the fact that scientific research has not conclusively demonstrated a causal link.He also said that there may be a cure for autism -- Vitamin B in a special form.
White House officials are also expected to suggest that a form of vitamin B that is typically used in conjunction with cancer treatment could be used to treat autism.Oh no -- we might cure autism and reduce the number of new cases, but whatever we do, we mustn't undermine the scientific establishment that has been batting 0.174 for the past fifteen years. (Remember the faked data claiming that Alzheimer's was caused by brain plaque? Which then caused us to spend ten years and billions in research on a medical dead-end?) The NYTimes also claims that the science is "mixed" so we should just ignore it.
"We're gonna have one of the biggest announcements, really, medically, I think, in the history of our country," President Trump said Sunday night, referring to a press conference scheduled for Monday afternoon. "I think we found an answer to autism." This would be the administration's latest move questioning the science of commonly used medications, from vaccines to abortion medications, and stirring up controversy in what many say is an effort to undermine the scientific establishment and advance a political agenda.

Plus, it's never done a damned thing for me. As far as I can tell it has zero effect on any kind of pain.
Aspirin works. Codeine works. Ibuprofen works (though not as well as aspirin, IMO). Acetaminophen might as well be so many Tic-Tacs.

Umm, how about penicillin? Near total eradication of most of the infectious killers of children such asx measles, mumps, polio, etc.? Widespread public health benefits of modern sanitation, clean waterr, etc.
Even if (and it's a great big if), marginal improvements are achieved in autism rates it would pale in terms of its health impacts "in the history of our country".

Honestly, that's probably true.
That said, I think the link is gonna be too simplistic a look, b/c I think autistic kids will still be formed if moms don't take tylenol and moms that do will still have many normal babies. I'm betting this linkage (at best) is like smoking cigarettes and lung cancer. Some folks can smoke packs/day for years and never get it, some folks can never smoke and get it, but the odds are if you smoke, you will get lung cancer. It's about susceptibility and dose...and for some, autism will still appear in births b/c it's genetically there vs environmentally there (which would make sense, b/c before Tylenol appeared, we still had some autistic folks born, just WAY, way fewer)...

There is no autism epidemic. 95% of the kids 'diagnosed" with autism are just "weird kids" which occurred at the same statistical level as they always have--only now they are "medicalized" and a fake epidemic is created out of thin air.
Real autism and a very real and very serious and socially crippling disease, and autistics have all my sympathy. But in the modern world, 95% of those claiming to have autism do notmin fact have autism -- thye jut have parents who want that sweet sweet disabiity classification. Or if it'd a teen self-diagnosing, they want to feel special.

Yep. For me, it doesn't do it's basic job of pain relief, so I simply don't use it. Aspirin or Ibuprofen works. I know some medical conditions advise to stay away from NSAID'S so I don't know what they use. I guess Tylenol unless there is some other pain reliever out there. Whiskey?

Like CA leads the way with Autism diagnoses...along with transgender kids.
It's just the people that are parents in CA. Not genetics or Tylenol.

Two things.
1. We have given people an incentive to be diagnosed. Better treatment at schools, more money for schools, excuse for failure, etc. (Probably more money in benefits but depends on state and I don't know the data.)
2. We have eliminated the barriers on how people behave - brothers, cousins, etc. even neighbors. It used to be when kids acted weird, they were quickly corrected and told to get in line. Now there is no community to straighten them out.

Also tells me acetaminophen can be hard on your liver especially if you drink. I've been alergic to it ever sense I read that. You have to force Dr.s to give you pain meds without acetaminophen. Big pharma pushed that hard.

My mother was a sociopath. I only realized that late in life because she was pre-war generation and was trained to act within socially acceptable bounds.
She acted like a normal person, but I am convinced only because she had to live within the rules of society at the time. She drove my father nuts, and after he died she drove me nuts. Complete moral vacuum and she saw nothing wrong with it,.... as long as no one knew.

Well, just because you have personal experience with kids who really do have it, a lot even, doesnt mean it isnt overdiagnosed. I have personal experience, have seen many very autistic kids especially when taking my kids to physical and occupational therapy. I dont actually know how many kids carry the diagnosis but otherwise look ok, function in there activities of daiky living and just seem weird. Maybe thats a lot. All i know is that some kids have it really bad. Other kids not as bad. And by that i mean some kids can feed themselves and talk and learn to read. Just weird kids. Dont see them at physical therapy.

I agree, and think that nothing is gained by having self diagnosed or crank doctor diagnose them for sympathy points doesn't help the real sufferers and their families.
There are sane trans people out there too. They aren't being served by using their issue to create a psychotic army of assassins and to give mutilating surgeons a thrill.

I think the rise in autism diagnosis is maltifactoral. Medications, both prescribed, otc and in our water supply, preservatives in our food, pollution in our air and soils….. chemicals in everything….. plus parents who never help kids learn about self control.

Both can be true. It can be over diagnosed *and* some kids legitimately have the condition.
Why is that not obvious? No one is saying that *no one* has the condition, or that it isn't a newly growing problem. I am just saying that I see a lot of people that claim to be autistic and had no developmental delays and live a mostly normal life and it makes me think they are looking for a way to be special. Parents of kids with real problems should be against that as well.

And so as others have noted we get two extremes of everybody and their goldfish has autism put them on meds and therapy, or there's no such thing as autism just bad kids who don't get hit enough. Yes, in so far as the results are more consistent. With a pill, it can take longer and if you have an actual deficiency, a multi won’t be enough. You will need to see a doc to prescribe the right amount. You need to take a b12 supplement daily, versus weekly for a shot, and a pill will take longer to build up. It has to go through an extra step of your stomach where a shot is ta da! Right there.
B12 is thick, though, if you do it, make sure you chose your booty for the site to inject. 😂

An issue in general with batch vaccinations is that likely the tests for safety were not done with the other vaccinations together, thus it is a possibility that the presence of multiples has a different effect. In my day the ones I got were measles and polio and pox, not some STD for adults.
A friend of mine was called back for a long term check and found that somehow the immunity for one of them was gone. They wanted to try and figure out why, but he passed up travelling 2000 miles to get needled up.

I think that's a big example of magical thinking in medicine. Everyone knew of 'gin babies' who were damaged by alcoholism of their usually poor mothers. It doesn't follow that taking a glass of wine during pregnancy is an instant brain death. That's not how dosages work.

I am going through pictures to scan for our son. I have a series of school pictures from when I was in grade school in the 60s that my mother gave me some years back. There isn't a single fat kid in any of those pictures, literally not a single fat kid in 5 years worth of grade school pictures.
Now maybe that's an outlier, but there are about 20-25 kids in each picture and not a single one is even "overweight", let alone fat.

I think that's a big example of magical thinking in medicine. Everyone knew of 'gin babies' who were damaged by alcoholism of their usually poor mothers. It doesn't follow that taking a glass of wine during pregnancy is an instant brain death. That's not how dosages work.

I don't think that was the point Leupold was making. A woman drinking a glass of wine or two while pregnant should pose little risk to the pre-born baby. Guzzling booze like there's not tomorrow is obviously not going to be good.

My 4yo daughter had to go to a neurologist after sn idiopathic seizure.
Before we even talked about the seizure, the doctor looked at her for literally less than a minute.
"She's autistic."
"What? No she isn't. What are you talking about?"
"She didn't acknowledge me when I walked in the room."
"She's 4, with a series of brain surgeries under her belt. She's afraid of doctors."
"You should get her evaluated."
"No, let's talk about the seizure."
We come back for a followup a year, when she just happened to be in a better mood, and she immediately began playing with the doc. I asked if she thought she was autistic, the doctor clearly had no memory of that exchange, and just said "no, not at all."
THAT'S how thorough they are with this life changing diagnosis. Ludicrous.

A kid with autism became a thing for parents to brag about, a couple decades ago. Because our kid is special! He/she has special talents that may blossom into who knows what terrific talents! He attends special classes or schools! One of my male coworkers was always bragging about accomplishments of his (diagnosed) autistic son. Every mom wanted to join the "I have an autistic child, yay!" Club. The latest mom fad is having a transgender kid. Suburban Moms seem to naturally want to rise to the top of the neighborhood Special Mom pyramid. BAMN
Eh, I might have done the same if I'd had kids. Autistic, not transgender.

Piper, if it helps, there is a correlation between childhood seizures caused by high fevers, combined with diarrhea with onset of autism symptoms. The MMR combo is what is thought to be the trigger.
I also think this is such a dangerous live-wire no one is going to touch it without lots of research. There was a study that showed this that ruined the researcher's career.
Even Trump danced around mentioning it, and did not discuss SIDS once.

Almost all pain killers I get keep me from sleeping more the pain does. I usually do without. After I had arm surgery on broken bones near the wrist I had to reconsider when the pain block ran out. That hurt. Stopped after about a days dose to be able to sleep.
