Oh no, American companies might be forced to train and employ actual American citizens.
There are billion-dollar companies whose only service is applying for H-1B visas and then selling them to people looking for work. Many of these billion-dollar H-1B grifter companies are Indian. Currently, 71% of all H-1B applicants are Indian. 11.7% are Chinese. Trump is driving up the cost to hire a foreigner over an American. Supposedly these visas are for jobs of high talent and skill for which there are few qualified American workers. In reality, these visas are bought just to do fairly low-level, routine jobs in tech so that they these greedy corporations can just save a buck while pretending not to be evil.President Donald Trump raised the fee for an H-1B visa to $100,000 on Friday, leaving companies scrambling to respond. As of Sunday, H-1B visa applications will require a $100,000 payment. Previously, visa fees ranged from $2,000 to $5,000 per application, depending on the size of the company. The fee will only be applied to new H-1B applicants, not renewals or current visa holders. The fee will be implemented in the upcoming lottery cycle.Bullshit. Companies like Disney force workers in fairly minor paper-pushing, number-crunching jobs to train their new Indian replacements, and then fire them. I'm not saying these jobs don't require training and skill. But I am saying that you can miss me with this "highly-skilled workers in specialized technical fields for which no Americans are trained" horseshit. When Disney orders American workers to train their own imported, largely Indian replacements, obviously Americans exist to do those jobs. Disney just wants to pay people less money to do them.

Employers now must have documentation of the payment prior to filing an H-1B petition on behalf of a worker. Applicants will have their petitions restricted for 12 months until the payment is made, according to the White House. ... Leavitt also clarified that the $100,000 is a one-time payment and not an annual charge. Exceptions can be made to any immigrant whose employment is deemed essential in the national interest by the Secretary of Homeland Security and does not pose a threat to the security or welfare of the U.S. Employees with B visas who have start dates prior to October 2026 will also receive additional guidance in order to prevent using those temporary business visas as a workaround for H-1B visas. Who are these workers and why are they needed? H-1B visas allows highly skilled foreign professionals to work in specialty occupations that generally require at least a bachelor's degree to fulfill the role. Jobs in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, usually qualify. Many employers use H-1B workers to fill the gaps in these highly technical roles that are not found within the American labor supply.
Companies in the tech and finance sectors rely heavily on these specially-skilled immigrants, particularly from India and China, which accounted for 71% and 11.7% of visa holders last year, respectively. How many H-1B visas does the tech industry use every year? The current annual cap for H-1B visas is 65,000, along with an additional 20,000 visas for foreign professionals with a master's degree or doctorate from a U.S. institution. A lottery system is used to select additional petitions if demand exceeds the cap. Since 2012, about 60% or more of approved H-1B workers had computer-related jobs, according to Pew Research. Amazon was the top employer for H-1B holders in the fiscal year 2025, sponsoring over 10,000 applicants by the end of June, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Microsoft and Meta had over 5,000 each, while Apple and Google rounded out the top six with over 4,000 approvals.

I have had two IT jobs outsourced to India, going back to 2001. I certainly did not do anything I would call 'high-skilled'. My replacements told me they made about a third of my income.

Company was DELIVERING $1 Million per month in Training, to American Adults, most of whom either had a Job or soon got jobs. Some of this was funded with VA and Labor Department retraining dollars... Then... suddenly...
They increased the number of H1B Visas available, AND made it so all that retraining public money could ONLY be used for Classes where you got College Credit.
Owners saw the writing on the wall.. and sold out... and even though the employees were promised stock if it ever went public... we got nothing. New Owners were clueless... and the doors closed about a year later.

I work in software engineering for a very large company, as a designer/architect where I don't do much of the actual development/coding. The upside for me is that I will work with fewer H1-Bs with less chance of them replacing me. The downside is that my company (and surely others) will simply offshore more of the work, and I will work with more India-based developers. Bullshit. Companies like Disney force workers in fairly minor paper-pushing, number-crunching jobs to train their new Indian replacements, and then fire them. I'm not saying these jobs don't require training and skill. But I am saying that you can miss me with this "highly-skilled workers in specialized technical fields for which no Americans are trained" horseshit.
It's not just with H1B visas that this is happening. The auto industry since COVID, when it went to 100% remote working, has been replacing American engineers with cheap labor in India, Mexico and people from India living in Canada.
Stellantis laid off 400 American engineers in March 2024 and replaced them with remote-working, cheap-labor "engineers" in India. Instead of paying one qualified American engineer in the office $100k + benefits, they can pay one "engineer" to remote work from India $10k-$25 and no benefits.
The problem is that 99% of these "engineers" are worthless. No experience, no knowledge, no work ethic, language barrier, culture barrier and none held accountable, because the directive to hire them comes from upper management solely based on wanting cheap labor, no matter the incompetence.

I interviewed a number of Indians for awhile. They all had PHDs from Cow Dung University but likely couldn't tie their shoes. They couldn't answer basic tech questions but somehow they got hired and were a disaster.

Two weeks or so later, when they showed up for their first day, people on the team would ask each other, "Gee, does that look like the guy we interviewed?"
A couple of people would sit down and do a quick check interview, which they totally bombed. They would admit they didn't have the skills/experience asked for, and had hired someone to interview for them.

At work, I have to contact commercial telecoms to get updates on circuits. Sometimes, I get an office that is obviously far away (lets just say South Asia). The person on the phone can barely speak english and can never find the existing ticket number I'm using (its a Verizon ticket, dammit!). I just hang up and try again. Eventually, I'll get an American (or American sounding) and they can actually do the job. Have I mentioned I work for the DoD?

My very large company employer still does. Don't know how much they do H1B. The best part is that if you bring on an overseas team of people (mostly India or Poland), they don't count against your headcount which is now strictly limited (at least in my division). So it's extra incentive for the execs beyond just cost saving if you want to accomplish all that work you've signed up for. And yes, we train them, too.

Already has been happening in auto industry since COVID over the past 5 years. They all took advantage of the remote working to just get rid of American workers and hire cheap labor remote workers in India, Mexico and people from India living in Canada.
And no, these are not the best of the best from those countries. Not when their salaries are $10k-25k. These "engineers" from India I don't think know anything about cars, let alone anything about engineering. It's an absolute disaster working with these idiots.

The problem is that 99% of these "engineers" are worthless. No experience, no knowledge, no work ethic, language barrier, culture barrier and none held accountable, because the directive to hire them comes from upper management solely based on wanting cheap labor, no matter the incompetence.

This is not to say there are not extraordinarily competent H1B workers, but the vast majority of them are not of the tier-1 hyper-skilled variety, they are just regular old meat and potatoes workers, that are simply being selected because the will work for less than an American equivalent.

Their caste system lends them to be extremely niche in what they do, so much that there is no incentive to learn or color outside the lines. It also fosters a culture of chronic lying, because they know they’ll never amount to anything so there’s no sense in having a good work ethic. (Or any kind of ethic at all)
There’s also the language barrier, I have one worker who tries but I give him simple instructions and he somehow manages to buttfuck gigabytes worth of spreadsheets that it takes the jaws of life to unravel it all
So let’s just say I’m mildly pleased Trump is doing this

If America doesn't clean up its act and get reliable power, a Western legal system, jogger control, and a better grade of intelligent workforce, it should go to South Asia.
Criminals and lawfare need to go away. Data centers and reliable power, transportation and infrastructure need to be in place; and corruption needs to be pulled out at the root in government.
When the US is indistinguishable from India except for the US have a 10x cost of living, its going to India.

I had to call a customer service line to get help with a credit card and got Rishi Vindaloo from bowels of Calcutta with only a basic ability to speak English with the thickest of accents. It's a big problem that companies are hiring incompetent customer service reps to do tech support for businesses. At least with residential customers, they tend to have easier problems. The company I worked for went with new software and didn't bother to put in the DSL circuit info, that I put into a spreadsheet for them. Made it so much fun to talk to Spectrum about that government agency that was down.

Anyway, real workers utterly frustrated, have no good products to show for their low-pay drudgery, stuck working for garbage employers. That's the work culture (and values culture) a lot of them come from?

another good one was a place where they hired a consultant because engineer A and engineer B in 2 departments refused to speak with each other under any circumstances. So I had to translate between them.

How about US Companies that outsource their customer service to India. I had to call a customer service line to get help with a credit card and got Rishi Vindaloo from bowels of Calcutta with only a basic ability to speak English with the thickest of accents. Tried my hardest to be polite but after constantly having to say what? and I'm sorry but I cannot understand what you just said, I had to get off of the phone.

Depends on a lot of the old-school ESG (environment, social, governance).
If America doesn't clean up its act and get reliable power, a Western legal system, jogger control, and a better grade of intelligent workforce, it should go to South Asia.
Criminals and lawfare need to go away. Data centers and reliable power, transportation and infrastructure need to be in place; and corruption needs to be pulled out at the root in government.
When the US is indistinguishable from India except for the US have a 10x cost of living, its going to India.

I got Rajesh from Bangalor India one time. I had to speak slowly and tell him that I could not understand him and I needed to speak to someone that I could understand. It took about 10 minutes but I finally got someone who I could understand.

I read an eye-opening reddit post from some despairing Indian (living and working in India) software developer who described the rot in the system over there. How these millionaires want An App, build me An App that does X, they insist on getting it in half a week when it's actually a project that needs a month, engineers slave away and produce what they can, millionaire sells it somehow before it explodes, lather rinse repeat.

The Mythical Man Month is a classic in the CS field, written in the 60s. This is endemic in the field - insane scheduling.
I went into one consulting job to do documentation and in meeting the manager was shown the nice neat schedule down to the day for everyone, ending Dec 31. I told him that he forgot to include any time for testing. Next day got a schedule that included testing, ending Dec 31. I then reminded him that they forgot about Thanksgiving break, Xmas Break, and their own policy that untaken vacation is lost at year end so the staff was gonna be gone all of December.

I've been a Software Engineer for 30 years, and I despise the H1B Visa. There has never been a more destructive force to software than importing a bunch of uneducated, diploma mill frauds to cosplay as actual software engineers. Quite honestly, ending the H1B Visa is long overdue.
Also, you guys may not realize this, but a staggering percentage of India's GDP is in the form of foreign remittances (and scam call centers) - and this is Modi's plan - infiltrate the west, loot the economies, and try and capture US corporations (Salesforce and Microsoft are two examples of companies that should almost be written off as Indian). Amanda Bartolotta on World Net Daily has a ton of great articles about Modi directing the Indian diaspora.
The 100K fee is a good start. Ultimately, the H1B Visa should be ended, and the "guest workers" here should be given 75 days to divest themselves of all Amercan assets, train their American replacements, and leave the country or else face seizure and deportation. F--k India.
