The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Frailty...Thy name is EU!

450 million weak-willed, welfare-addicted drones, whose fixation on personal pleasure, an easy life, and a total reliance on others to do the heavy lifting in their miserable lives has led inexorably to their current situation of another invasion by Islam. Except this time they don't have the intestinal fortitude to fight back.

And even when there is a fight that they believe in, they can't be bothered to turn down their thermostats and slow down their pretty little cars and trains to cut off the oceans of cash going directly to their supposed enemy...the evil Russian bear!

Because cheap energy is one of the ways they prop up their failing welfare states and their rush to green energy suicide. Oh sure, they tax the hell out of it, just to keep the peasants from getting too uppity, but they are hiding the true cost of that cheaper energy. The many billions of euros that they pump into the Ukraine war are partially necessary because Russia can afford to pay for their end of the war...with oil and gas revenue coming from the EU!

You can't make this up! The hypocrisy of the EU is stunning, yet they continue to pontificate about America's lack of involvement in their war of adventure.

NATO Countries Still Tapping Russian Oil and Gas

Before the Ukraine-Russia war in 2022, Moscow provided around 40 percent of the EU's natural gas imports, along with significant volumes of crude oil and coal.

Eurostat data show that Russia's share of EU liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports stood at 12.9 percent in the second quarter of 2025, while pipeline gas accounted for 12 percent, with Norway, the United States, and Algeria displacing much of Moscow's supply.

Following the EU's seaborne crude ban in December 2022, the only remaining legal flows of Russian crude into the bloc come via the southern branch of the Druzhba pipeline, supplying Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic under exemptions.

Just like America and great Britain continued to buy German machinery, textiles and pharmaceuticals during WWII!

Until the EU gets serious about the Ukraine war, and stops funding Russia, there is absolutely no claim on any shared NATO involvement. Of course that means American involvement, because while most of NATO has pledged to increase defense spending, they have yet to do so. We still pay the lion's share of European defense!

But this has been the EU method for years. They talk a big game, but quietly trade with the most evil countries on earth. Take a look at the machinery that ran Iran's nuclear program...it sure wasn't Iranian. Or the steel used in Hamas's tunnels?

What this sclerotic and weak continent wants is for America to bail them out yet again. Their masturbatory fantasies of American air strikes on Russian positions in Ukraine, and American tanks driving on Donbas might seem to them to be reasonable, but 250,000 American servicemen died the last time Europe decided to duke it out.

Maybe they should send some of their effeminate, entitled youth into the bloodbath of Ukraine before they expect us to bail them out.

Trump is perfectly willing to let the EU fight it out with Russia now and sell arms to EU to do it. I think he has given up on giving Russia an exit ramp to this war.

Putin is equally idiotic strategically to pursue a war beyond his original claims for territory. Pyrrhic victory comes to mind.

And now China's chain got jerked good and hard by Poland shutting the border with Belarus. That rail route shuts down Chinese goods sent to the EU to the tune of billions which requires the longer, more expensive sea route to replace.

Poland did it specifically to get China to call off Russia in prosecuting the war further. And Russia's hard won reserves are melting away along with oil price revenue being 16 percent lower so far this year and projected to be 23 percent lower in the Russian Budget.

First the best and brightest of their manhood was sucked away by colonialism, then the remaining competent portion of the populace was almost all lost to voluntary emigration.

WWI was essentially the remaining dregs committing suicide at the nation-state level.

The problem is that oil is fungible - Europe stops buying oil from Russia, India buys more oil from Russia, and Indonesia ships the oil that it used to ship to Russia to Europe.

Natural gas is less fungible, since you have to ship it either via a pipeline or via expensive LNG, but even then Russia is expanding its gas pipelines to China to offset any loss in European sales.

The really genius move Germany did was shut down its nuclear plants at the exact moment that it lost cheap Russian gas, and replaced that gas with much more expensive LNG.

Casey Goonan, a 'scholar-activist', was sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison for firebombing a UC Berkeley police car and other arson acts, which occurred in June 2024.
The sentence exceeded the prosecution's request of 15 years, with Goonan also ordered to pay nearly $100,000 in fines for his violent acts, inspired by political motives related to the conflict in Gaza.
Goonan's defense claimed the charges stemmed from political bias against his activism for Palestinian rights, while the DOJ stated he admitted that his actions aimed to intimidate governments as a response to international events.

EURO News - Today

'Made in Ukraine and battlefield-tested: Kyiv to open up global arms exports'

"Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine is opening up its arms exports. The much-anticipated decision will transform Ukraine’s defence industry and allow Kyiv’s partners to access the rarest type of weapons – those tested on the battlefield.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that his country will begin exporting domestically produced weapons, lifting a restriction introduced when Kyiv declared martial law.

“We decided to open our arms exports. These are powerful systems tested in real war,” Zelenskyy said at the UN General Assembly in New York."(More)

EURO NEWS, 'Italy and Spain deploy navy ships to assist Gaza aid flotilla'

The announcements by Rome and Madrid to deploy navy vessels to assist and protect the flotilla come after activists reported several attacks on its ships overnight on Tuesday.
In separate decisions on Wednesday, Spain and Italy announced they would send a navy ship each to assist the aid flotilla to the famine-stricken Gaza, set to break Israel's longstanding blockade of the Strip and deliver crucial aid.

UC Riverside Professor Dylan Rodríguez: “F*cking terrorizes civilization. I want to be that kind of terrorist.”

In a recent appearance on Millennials Are Killing Capitalism, Rodríguez — a UC Riverside professor, past president of the American Studies Association, and a leading voice in Ethnic and Black Studies — openly glorified terrorism and insurrection. His teachings don’t stay in the classroom. One of the students he hailed as a “genius” is now serving time for firebombing vehicles at UC Berkeley. . . .

I've long thought, in terms of alternate histories, that the world would have been a far better place if the UK had stayed out of WW1 and allow it to just be a replay of the 1870 Franco-Prussian war. Embarrassing for France, but not world changing, and the UK would still have had the greatest Empire in the world at the end of it.

Some thoughts on possible RIFs in a shutdown.

The language in the memo that the OMB sent out makes note of roles not authorized explicitly by statute, which is a signal that the administration is still using Loper as a driving rationale for all of its deregulatory efforts.

It makes me wonder...is it just easier to eliminate regulations if no one is actively working on it? From an internal perspective.

Like, 10 people are working to, say, study birdflight patterns over rural areas due to climate change, or whatever. But, the 10 people get RIFed. Now that you don't have to deal with any 5th Amendment property claims on the employment of the 10, does it just clear the deck for eliminating the regulation entirely that otherwise wouldn't be allowed? Not that the admin couldn't eliminate the regulation that led to the research group at all, just that the process is streamlined and faster.

Even if the EU tried to put some pressure on him to give up on Russian oil, it would have no effect: the EU has already tried putting pressure on him regarding various issues (for better or worse) and he did not bend.
Perhaps if Trump told him to cut back on Russian oil he would listen. Or, again, maybe not.
Slovakia is pretty much in the same boat.
The European countries that support Ukraine are not the same as the European countries that buy Russian oil. There is no hypocrisy there.

Ruthless national socialism was FAR better.

Snark aside, I'm rather skeptical on that "hell-bent on hegemony" part. I'm sure they WANTED that, but, like most European wars, would have settled for far less and then there would have been another war later to squabble over other parts. Doesn't mean it would have been better of worse, but different.

If WWI had ended differently, WWII would have looked vastly different as well. (LIKELY better, but who knows)

Additionally, colonial holdings would have been very different and the anti-colonialism of the 60s-today would likely been very different.

Russia continues to draft 300,000 people a year for one-year terms (as they have done for decades), but those people aren't sent to Ukraine.

Fabian tactics used to stop Hannibal and Russia has used those tactics themselves, trading territory for keeping the core army together.

How many Ukrainian men are necessary to stop Russian advances though is a question none of us sitting here really know how to answer. Russia is using attrition strategy which ground down the American South under Grant and the German Army in WWII. Iraq used it in defense against Iran after its initial offensive failed.

Russia clearly has the numbers to continue ground operations but question marks are whether the public inside Russia is beginning to question whether continuing it is necessary given the increasing hardships of massive inflation, stalled economic growth, and hiked taxes.

And we simply do not know these things.

The best estimates of casualties are saying Ukraine -1.5 to 1.7 million, and Russia 660,000. Ukraine is deliberatly underreporting KIAs, because they (are supposed to) pay a significant death benefit to the family, but don't if the person is 'missing' or 'deserted'.

Ukraine is running out of hamburger troops, and Russia is not. Russia's tank manufacturing now exceeds the number of tanks lost each month. It's hard to see this ending well for Ukraine.

I have wanted to track that since the beginning of the war. For some reason (I know the reason), it's much harder to do than it should be. I think it's been all one way: Russia taking more and more territory. I think it's only a question of how much.

Long run, this war is likely to be a pyrrhic victory at best for Russia and end up with it becoming a satrapy of China if they aren't careful. Russia has the same demographic problems that teh West does, and the only difference is that their population growth, such that it is, is coming from non-Russian minorities from the Eastern parts of the Empire just like Euroland is importing from Africa and Middle East.

Ukraine: Why young men can now enter, leave as they choose

Published 09/18/2025

Despite martial law, Ukrainian men aged 18 to 22 are now allowed to leave their country without facing prosecution. DW spoke to some young men at the border between Ukraine and Poland about their reasons for traveling.

----------
AI Overview, in part - This policy was aimed at ensuring young men could pursue education or work abroad while also giving them the freedom to return. Critically, this age group is not subject to combat conscription.
Voluntary service: While the draft does not apply to men under 25, the government has launched a program to encourage voluntary one-year military service for those aged 18 to 24. Participants receive financial incentives and other benefits.

Casualties, territory gained, etc are tangible things that can be measured. Lot harder to measure intangibles in warring countries like morale and ironically, terror and suffering type attacks on civilian targets, can actually stiffen resolve.

To many folks simply look at military bean counting--it is better to take Bastiat's broken window thesis. We can see direct costs of broken windows but we cannot see the opportunity costs of allocating money to replace a broken window by the shopkeeper instead of something else.

War spending displaces spending that might be used for better purposes in a nation and squander's lives similarly.

For that reason, voluntary general wars are almost always a bad idea for the perpetrator. Wars of necessity are pretty much limited to direct defense of homeland after being attacked.

Other military actions short of general wars may be advantageous or not. But general wars set off consequences none of those in it can see.

255 TJM, Brave AI summary of marijuana and child soldiers in Africa.
"Child soldiers in Africa are frequently administered marijuana as part of their indoctrination and control by armed factions. Marijuana is one of the most commonly used drugs, often given to make children feel brave and less fearful of combat.

Commanders use marijuana to desensitize children to violence and to help them cope with the horrors of war, which can include witnessing or committing atrocities.

The drug is often used alongside other substances like cocaine, heroin, methamphetamines, and tranquilizers, depending on regional availability.
In some cases, children are forced to take marijuana and other drugs under threat of severe punishment or death, and refusal can result in beatings or execution.

The use of marijuana is part of a broader strategy to disengage the child's actions from reality, making it easier for them to commit violent acts and to become dependent on the drugs, which can hinder their reintegration into civilian life after demobilization."

271 All because we insisted on tilting the balance of power - rather than making the sides negotiate a peace. Yay us.

True. But also true is we eclipsed our elder brother and became an Empire. The later was the point.

Use the time to rearm, rebuild, and rethink drone tactics while hitting Ukrainian infrastructure from the air.

For a variety of reasons, Russia now is more vulnerable to Ukraine than vice versa especially oil refineries, electrical plants, rail lines, etc.

There is a reason that Putin uses missiles rather than expensive and difficult to replace planes but that reliance is also a problem on targeting mobile targets. And that Putin has asked Turkey to sell him back the S400 anti air missile systems that they bought from Russia.

And that goes into what are Putin's war aims as he could just declare unilateral ceasefire himself but he clearly anticipates being able to gain more by continuing the war than ceasing it.

Tis a gamble but he is an old man likely to die in the next several years and probably thinks this is his legacy. And he just fired his old friend and long term advisor that was pushing for peace.

From Newsweek Sept. 18th,
"Dmitry Kozak, who is of Ukrainian origin, "resigned" from his position as Kremlin deputy chief of staff, according to Russian publication RBC."

273 I hate kate mara.

She, too, looks like ALF, with her close-together eyes.

Rooney Mara looks like a transformer, and Kate is the less attractive sibling.

275 why are we importing muzzies? I know an Irish guy that works his ass off and has been trying for a couple of decades to get citizenship instead of work visa status. Apparently we restrict European migration and open the gates for everyone else. Who made up these rules?
