Lots of Hispanic guys opening up barber shops here, or buying older ones whe the previous owner retires. I've been going to one that I have been using for well over 40 years when owned by a first generation Italian/American.
The new guy is great, takes the time to do a good job and is very polite. I will continue to give him my business. Speaks perfect English, as well. Oh, and he is the first barber I have seen in any years to use a straight blade to shave a customer. An art in itself. He told me that it had been his life's dream to own his own business. Personal note........
Yesterday was a rough afternoon. We took a few things from the house and took them to my step-mother. She was appreciative and everything. She asked a few questions and understands that she's leaving and won't really be seeing any of her things, nor her home with my father again. I was able to get the brass plaque off the grandfather clock which was a dedication to her deceased brother. Her children have expressed they can't take it due to one living overseas and moving every few years and the son, a nutless wonder, has been told by his wife she doesn't like clutter so there's no room for any such nonsense. It was dinner time, so we escorted her to the cafeteria where The First Lady broke down. She sobbed uncontrollably for a moment, knowing this would likely be the last time we'd ever see her again. She's being moved by her son and son in law this week. Her Parkinson's is progressing and she's shaking a bit more than the last we saw her a couple weeks ago. While this chapter is almost closed and we can get back to a normal flow, it's still hard, emotional and overall sucks. I really dislike my step-siblings quite a lot. My old barber, who was great, cuz he was able to handle my glorious head of hair that is also a forest of cowlicks, retired. So, I've been looking around, and went to one place that was recommended. It was $70/haircut!!! But, on the upside you got to order a cocktail or bourbon or rum or tequila of your choice, and they kept pretty good brands stocked. The downside? Their haircuts were like you got one from your bartender. Then we went to Germany. for vacation, where I got a great haircut for the equivalent of $25. Buuuuut, I'm not flying to Squareheadville once a month to get a haircut. Currently, I'm going to a very close to the olde-style barber shop place. You know shave your neck with warm shaving cream, etc. And it's $30/cut. Close in quality to the German cut, so I'll stick with them for a while. Hello,
Thank you for all of the kind wishes and prayers for John last week. They mean so much. We still don't know what happened. I can't shake the feeling that I failed him. He'd be the first to say that I didn't, but he's not here to say it now. He was cremated and we had a private remembrance. Over the weekend I took him to Spruce Canyon at Rocky Mountain National Park. He’s now near Stone's Peak. I'm sure that I was supposed to get a permit or something but I really don't give a shit. John certainly wouldn't have. So every year I take a week to go solo backcountry hiking somewhere. This will now be my annual trip. I saw a few questions about donations in John's name. I think he'd just want us to be supportive of each other. And drink. Especially drink. I’ll pop in occasionally here. I still think you all are weird but you also turned out to be wonderful when it counted. Thank you. T Posted by: Taylor at September 24, 2025 10:12 AM (wwryM) 174

Hack situates the viewer as voyeur, peering in from the street, but unable to enter. This exclusion is not neutral. It resonates politically with the dynamics of class and urban redevelopment in mid-20th-century San Francisco, when working-class neighborhoods (including barber shops as social hubs) were being hollowed out by urban renewal. The empty chairs and shuttered feel of the shop are not simply aesthetic -- they are political traces of displacement, of economies abandoned, of lives made invisible.
In this sense, the “absence” that Jacques Derrida notes is not only philosophical but also material: the absence of the barber and his clients indexes broader structures of erasure -- working-class labor, immigrant economies, and the decline of local, communal gathering spaces under the pressures of capital. Yesterday someone was marvelling at 1950s movies, about how when parking on the street, they would slide over the bench seat and exit from the passenger side.
There was a method to the madness. On Ford’s at least, they didn’t have a key lock on the driver’s side door. Maybe you could buy one, but it cost extra. In those days everything was extra cost option. Even sunshades and armrests, rear bumpers, etc. So you’d lock the door from the inside and then slide out the passenger side. It’s also much safer than exiting street side in traffic. The reverse routine was to let your girl in the passenger side, and being the Swell Gal that she was, would slide over and unlock the door for you by the time you got there to get in the driver side. I've been going to the same barber shop for as long as I can remember. The haircut is $16. I give the owner, who cuts my hair, $40. $16 is for the haircut and $24 is for seeing me immediately when I call and for not talking too much while she cuts my hair.

I'm not the kind of person who tells dudes to shave their heads bald as soon as their hairline starts to recede, but I do wonder about the people who either keep a Skullet or a Friar/Horseshoe.
Posted by: XTC at September 24, 2025 10:38 AM (UnA8+) I keep what's left of my hair very close to stubble now. Methodically working towards fully shaved. Probably will be at that point next summer. If I let it grow, I'd probably have the friar look. And I don't have the energy to fight off all the ladies who swarm to guys with the friar look. The surname Jahn is of German origin, derived from a shortened form of the personal name Johann(es), which is equivalent to the English name John.
This name itself originates from the Hebrew name Yochanan, meaning "God is gracious" or "God is merciful". The name Johannes, the Latinized form of Yochanan, became widespread in Europe during the Middle Ages, particularly due to the popularity of saints named John, such as John the Baptist and John the Evangelist. The surname Jahn is thus a patronymic name, meaning "son of Jahn" or "son of Johann", and is commonly found in Northern Germany and regions with historical German influence. You may now continue. I used to get my haircut at a chain called Lady Jane's. They are guy friendly place with big screen tvs tuned to espn etc. Used to have 10 dollar cuts. The barbers were all women. Well a couple years back planned parenthood opened a center right next door. They are in a strip mall so under the same roof, and thin wall in between. I never stepped foot in there again. Cant do it knowing what is happening on the other side of the wall.
