Every year, grave diggers from around the world gather in Hungary to compete in the International Grave Digging Championship. Every year since 2016, with the exception of 2020 and 2021, Hungary’s Association of Cemetery Operators and Maintainers (MTFE) has been inviting grave diggers from all over the world to the European country to compete for the title of World Grave Digging Champions. Working in teams of two, grave diggers must put their abilities to the test by digging graves that are 2 meters long, 80 centimeters wide, and 1.6 meters deep within two hours, and then shoveling the approximately 2.5 tons of dirt back into the holes to create a neat burial mound. Looks like a storm is brewing here. It has been fine for weeks, but now we have a strong, gusty NW wind, and it is clouded over. Still mild, but around here, when a norther blows in, it pushes warm air ahead of it, and it gets somewhat warmer until the warm air has moved on, and then the temp drops precipitously.

Hubby and I being in our 70's didn't know much about Charlie Kirk. We knew of him, but not much else.
Hubby is so sick today, but he sat in his recliner all day watching the Charlie Kirk memorial service. We are amazed at the impact Charlie had on the world.
We wish the best for the Kirk family and pray their influence on the world continues to spread.
We need more people like the Kirks.

The Equinox will be at 2:19PM EDT (18:19Z). While the term "equinox" means "equal night", the daylength will not be exactly 12 hours. The Sun is not a point, and sunrise and sunset are when the limb of the sun touches the horizon.
They've taken to calling the day when night and day are a close to 12 hours each as the "equilux". It's never exactly 12 hours, and the duration and date vary a bit with latitude. For me here, the equilux will be the 26th, with a daylength of 11:59:21, which is the closest to 12 hours.

Hmm, when we were at the sturgis rally we always took a route that was very close to spearfish. It ran right along the edge of belle fourche, and went through Aladdin and Hulett wyoming. 85 coming out of spearfish and heading towards bell fourche will take you right to it. I can't seem to get a name for the road. Its very scenic. You go through Aladdin, population 15. Make sure you stop at the little general store there.

The shadows don't seem right.
Maybe it's the way the shadows are falling, but the woman in the foreground seems twisted about 160 degrees at the waist-I think I'm looking at the backs of her knees.
Woman on the right looks to be walking forward, but her skirt is flipped up like she's landing from a jump, but if that's the case she's not getting that foot back under her.
And there's a leg just to the left of the woman in the foreground that looks like it's trying to connect to the gal in the air to the left.

We have done both routes. It sort of depends on what you are after.
If you are a fan of Close Encounters and want that approach come from the south off the interstate. You will recognize it.
The northern route is a bit more scenic, winding through some of the hills and valleys around the Tower, and a couple little towns.
Both get you there.

Since there was no front plate people would put personalized plates. Around the same time the Highway Patrol started a safety campaign with the motto 'Arrive Alive' depicted as a license plate in red letters on a white background.
It took about 5 minutes for front plates with 'Arrive Stoned' to appear!
I still have one of those, too.

Very scenic that route. We used to stay in Bell Fourche, so right at the cross roads of 85 and I guess 24 there was a diner called the belle diner. Pancakes the size of which I never saw. We would get breakfast and then hit 24 right there at the cross road and then it was right to devils tower. It was a beautiful ride.

Rosh Hashanah (Jewish Civil New Year) runs this time from sunset 22nd to sunset 24.
All these Revelation Prophecy diviner types are big on the Rosh Hashanah. Traditionally, that is held to be the anniversary of day Adam and Eve were created (I think -- the Jewish soli-lunar calendar gets a wee bit complex, makes my eyes glaze over).
So, every so often one of these types, who don't understand "Of that day and that hour no man knoweth" does some calculation based on all sorts of numerology and Jewish calendar stuff and comes up with the Rapture date. Rosh Hashanah is almost always the big date.

A straw hat I bought in NOLA I could wear to the Derby, but more tasteful. People stopped me on the street to compliment the hat and me. I had to carry it back to FL on my lap on the plane, and wore it in the Hotlanta airport. A waitress carded me simply to see my name for my gin and tonic (like I was famous and she might not know, otherwise I had not been carded in 20yrs). It is a huge hat, kept the sun off me, and makes a statement that I will rock a hat with abandon wherever and whenever I want to. Buy hats, ladies!

Modern cars have the lockup torque converter mediated by the engine management computer. 700R4 was used when engine computers were just beginning to be used, and indeed the computer did run that function on some models. Otherwise, they used a vacuum switch to permit lockup to happen only for part-throttle cruise. Also a brake switch to disengage lockup when braking. That's probably what I will have to do; vacuum switch plus brake light switch, and a relay or two.
The tough nut to crack is getting this to also work when in third gear. Apparently there is no readily-accessible hydraulic pressure signal in that transmission to say "hey, I'm in third gear now."

The home ec teacher in charge of the cheerleader squad thought I did this on purpose and was mad at me. I did not, as I was not yet 16yrs old and did care.
Every boy in the school, some I did not know (not a huge school at all, 200 in HS) said they voted for me. Years later in college some of the jocks told me they did not remember anyone else's tryout but mine.
If you must mess up, do it on stage in front of the entire high school and wave.

Another thing that fascinates me about the seasons is they are not of equal length, due to the Erf's orbital eccentricity (ie ellipse, not a perfect circle with constant speed). Which is longer than which depends on the position of perihelion relative to the seasons. Right now, perihelion occurs in early Jan, in winter. Winter is thus the shortest season. Due to complex higher order effects, the length of each season varies a bit from year to year, but on average at current epoch it's this:

Thanks. I had seen other threads there on that subject but not that one. Sounds like my plan to use a vacuum switch, and a brake switch to control the lockup is the way to go. Lockup is the normal condition in part-throttle cruise. It goes away with either brisk acceleration, or with braking.

Up here, winter goes from October to May, Spring is not really Spring, just "breakup" for a couple of sloppy weeks, and then we have Summer, from end of May until end of August, then "Fall," which is mostly rain and slop until it snows.
Don't really care about the celestial stuff concerning our weather. We deal with what comes.

Well, ideally, you want torque converter lockup at part-throttle cruise in any gear other than first. You lose about 200 engine rpm, and that is mostly wasted energy just churning the oil to make heat. Lockup in second is hardly worth the effort, but lockup in third would be nice for city driving.
I rewired the transmission today to bring out two wires through the bulkhead connector. One powers the solenoid by way of the internal 4th gear pressure switch; the other goes direct to the solenoid.

Aha! It's the other way around with a gasoline engine (Diesels are different!). Idle, and part-throttle cruise are moderately high-vacuum modes. Closed-throttle deceleration is as high as vacuum can get (circa 20" Hg), and wide-open throttle is very low vacuum. Normal cruise maybe 10 to 16" vacuum.

They don't have intake manifold vacuum. There is no throttle valve. Each cylinder takes in as much air as it can possibly use on every intake stroke. Engine power and RPM are determined by the duration of the fuel shot from the injector.

I fixed one of those little hand-held jobs for a friend of mine back in May or June. Two-stroke Tecumseh engine on it. Got it running real well, too. But it sure didn't dig fast in the dirt here. Had to really lean on it. 4" holes for fence posts.

I guess some of the new ones are electronically controlled . "Common-rail diesel" is the mantra, now. The old-time ones were just nozzles with a pintle valve that would open once line pressure reached the right level. Still very precision hardware, though; we are talking several thousand psi line pressure, IIRC. Remember, that injector has to spray into a cylinder that is under very high compression pressure.

If you can believe some of the possible leaks about the autism announcement tomorrow, acetaminophen is going to be a big part of it. Also, leucovorin as a potential treatment.
"Big Tylenol" is apparently gearing up for a fight over this. They're going to claim that acetaminophen is "safe and effective" in pregnancy, there is no evidence, and denying it to pregnant mothers will lead to untreated fever, which is bad for the fetus.

Somebody here at the HQ was fond of pointing out that the margin between a safe therapeutic dose of Tylenol and a dose causing liver toxicity is very, very small, and that if Tylenol were a new drug being introduced today, it would never get regulatory approval; leastwise not for an OTC product.

Ibuprofen, aka Ranger Candy, works very well in cases. Reduces the swelling that causes the pain.
For gout Prednisone works miracles. Purinol is the script drug that keeps from flaring up in the first place.

If interested, look up the studies on Tylenol's effectiveness. No better than placebo for arthritis pain, for instance. And not effective in reducing fever in critically ill patients, etc, etc.
And, even for children, there may be a risk of neurodevelopmental problems. So maybe bad after birth, not just before.

Yes, acetaminophen in all these OTC products was a big factor in lot of liver damage due to overdose. They also lowered the max daily dose from 4000 mg to 3000 mg a few years ago.
You'll note that everything that has acetaminophen in it now has to have the amount in each dose highlighted in yellow.

When I had dental work done in Mexico years ago, they gave me Ketorolac for pain. It was amazing. Killed the pain within minutes of taking the pill. I think I only ever took 2 or 3 of them. Thought it might have been a narcotic, but no, it is an NSAID. Thing is, it is so effective, you don't have to take a lot of it to get relief. So maybe safer?

Factory was all CNC, floor was immaculate, looked like a clean room.
Passed on the job though.
The tooling was probably shiped off to Chyna 20 years ago.

Even at those prices it don't mean anything. One of the shops I do engines for called me yesterday. Texted me a bunch of pic of a motor they were taking apart. The motor was originally built as a stroker motor, and somebody rebuilt it back to original, but used the same pistons from the stroker. Motor probably had 6:1 compression if they were lucky. The piston was probably 1/2" down in the hole. I wonder what the dude paid for that silliness.

All service work is repetitive. Having done recaps on radios, I can say, "It's not that hard." Assuming you are talking about the old paper caps under the chassis; they are quite bulky. The little yellow Mylar caps used to replace them are about a quarter of the bulk, so you have room to work. What I do is clip off the leads of the old cap about 1/4" proud of the solder lug or tube socket pin to which they are soldered, and take them out of the chassis. Take the new yellow cap, and wind a few turns of its leads (which are normally thinner wire) around the lead of the discard cap, making a tight coil, and clip off the excess. You have now made a small sleeve on each lead of the new cap. Slip those sleeves over the stubs of the old cap leads on the chassis, and solder. Done! Rinse and repeat until all are done, one at a time.

I want to try doing it at least once. Have read that when it comes to old dead tape machines, the caps are quite often the culprit, and if they can be rejuvenated/replaced, miracles can happen. I learned from a self-taught course a few years ago, caps are kind of long-term batteries built into these old things, to micro-power various components.
Weird thing to have on my bucket list I know, but oh well. :-)

With this damned RA, I've learned all about NSAIDs. They can all be bad, and long term use of all them is not good. Me, I take as little now as possible.
I broke down and tool some Naproxen, which used to be pretty good for me. My stomach 12 hours later didn't think so at all.
Ibuprofen used to be pretty good, but if I take it for a few days, my blood pressure will start creeping up. Aspirin seems to be the least problematic, now.
I took Meloxicam for a long time years ago, until it started tearing my stomach up. That's what long term use can do. I think once you get sensitized to it, that's all she wrote.

No, caps are not "long-term" batteries; quite the opposite. They hold a charge for a fraction of a second. They will allow an alternating current to pass, but block DC. In an audio amp, like a tape recorder, they are used to couple audio from one stage to another, or to bypass unwanted signal to ground, or as part of a filter to block or enhance certain frequencies. There were "bias cells" in some old radio receivers built in the 1930's. They looked like tiny coolie hats made of dull metal. Provided about 1 volt DC at nearly zero current capacity. They went out of fashion about 1940, so you would likely never find one in a tape recorder.

One of the simplest yet most touching speeches for me was the lady that lost her husband to cancer, and then her home burned in the Palisades fire. The Kirks told her, see, it's a sign you and your daughter need to move to AZ! They did and the Kirks enfolded them into their arms and their home.
The lady said now she and her daughter will be the ones enfolding Erika and her babies into their arms and taking care of THEM.
Grateful the Kirks built a lifetime of friends who will do everything humanely possible to get them through this. I'm sure Erika will have moments of curling up in a ball, and just needing to hug her babies. And people around her will protect her so she can grieve as she needs to, while taking up the torch of her husband's mission and legacy.

Also interesting. The autism report may also link folic acid deficiency during pregnancy. Folate (vitamin B9) is very important during pregnancy, and I think folate supplementation is regularly advised during pregnancy for that reason.
They are also going to recommend leucovorin as a possible treatment. Leucovorin, folinic acid, is the "activated" form of folate. Regular folate needs to be metabolized before it can be used. Folinic acid can act directly. This was used as a "rescue" for methotrexate, which is anti-folate chemotherapy agent. I know about that, as low dose methotrexate is a standard treatment for RA -- I don't take that anymore either. Folate supplementation was standard with methotrexate treatment for RA.
So that's all interesting. We'll just have to wait and see what the report actually says.

That is, a pregnant mothers taking too much folic acid supplements might be a bad thing.

There's apparently a genetic factor. Converting folic acid to folate requires some enzymes, and some people don't do this a well as others.
You know what the best sources of folate are? Leafy greens. Spinach, turnip greens, etc. So maybe, recommend pregnant women eat a shit ton of that.

She can get away with it loose down her back for now, though one could quibble about it being too much against all the lacy texture. The gown was gorgeous. She is far too thin and I worry that we aren't being told the entire truth about her health, but she was very thin before her diagnosis, so she didn't have any stores to draw from, and hopefully that's it. Something looks different about the area around her mouth, can't put my finger on it.
The Queen Consort did not come to play! I can't tell if we were treated to the full 5 strands or the usual 3, but talk about the armor of God! 😂 Not shaming, if I had that necklace, I'd never take it off, but she's usually not that gaudy! 🤣
