Love your children and protect them. Be the spiritual head of your home. But please be a leader worth following." "Your wife is not your servant. Your wife is not your employee. ![]() Every year, grave diggers from around the world gather in Hungary to compete in the International Grave Digging Championship. Every year since 2016, with the exception of 2020 and 2021, Hungary’s Association of Cemetery Operators and Maintainers (MTFE) has been inviting grave diggers from all over the world to the European country to compete for the title of World Grave Digging Champions. Working in teams of two, grave diggers must put their abilities to the test by digging graves that are 2 meters long, 80 centimeters wide, and 1.6 meters deep within two hours, and then shoveling the approximately 2.5 tons of dirt back into the holes to create a neat burial mound. It sounds easy enough, but speed, accuracy, and attention to detail are the main criteria by which contestants are judged.Check out the whole thing. Fascinating stuff. ![]() ![]() For the Royal Library and Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House tour, Melania turned it out in a bespoke caramel leather skirt suit by Louis Vuitton, paired with snakeskin Manolo Blahnik pumps. It was giving earthy elegance. ![]() Melania showed her soft side (and serious style) by joining Princess Kate for a Squirrel Scout event at Frogmore Cottage. (Squirrel Scouts? Sounds like a cute cartoon plot, right?) She wore a Ralph Lauren Collection Bryan Belted Lamb-suede jacket and Roger Vivier u-cut, buckle-embellished flats in brown. In a subtle shade of I can’t be bothered, Melania simply changed her shoes and added sunglasses to meet with Kier Starmer and his wife, choosing Manolo Blahnik BB 105 pumps in brown snakeskin and Elizabeth and James Adler Square monochromatic sunglasses in black. ![]() Many of us are still shook by the state banquet. Melania wore an off the shoulder yellow column gown by Carolina Herrera, lilac belt, and paired with Manolo Blahnik nude heels. The dress didn’t photograph well, sometimes looking bright yellow (it was more butter) and the belt sometimes looked pink (it was lilac). This look was either a total yes or a hard pass, not much in-between. It nodded to the Queen’s favorite colors, but that off-the-shoulder moment had etiquette police clutching their teacups. But Princess Kate? She shut it down in a Phillipa Lepley Darling Coat gown in bespoke gold, paired with Aquazzura Felix 105 pumps in gold and an Anya Hindmarch Maud Pearls clutch in champagne (bespoke, obviously). Add Queen Elizabeth’s diamond orbital pendant earrings and Queen Mary’s Lovers Knot Tiara, and I am still out here trying to catch my breath. ![]() ![]() ![]() Special Football Season Bonus Segment! Spirit fingers, pom poms and loud stadiums all around! The cheerleaders are high kicking and sashaying to the beat. Among them is Betty Lou, the queen of the squad. Her high kicks are legendary, but her elbows? Oh, honey. We’re not saying she’s attractive (because we’re classy like that), but those elbows could star in a geometry textbook. Piper - Thanks for the fashion commentary. I am generally a big fan of Melania's style choices, but that yellow off-the-shoulder dress was a big "needle-scratch" for me. Fall at Windsor Castle called for a different choice. Catherine, however, was perfection. Of course it's hard to miss when you get to wear the Queen Mary tiara.

It has been fine for weeks, but now we have a strong, gusty NW wind, and it is clouded over. ISIS was celebrating with the UK, Canada, Portugal (they still around ??) and others who recognized a mythical entity by commanding their believers to kill Christians and Jews. So the recognition had its desired effect , we cans say. "O monotheistic Muslims… Hit Jews and Christians, their crowds and convoys, in the streets and on the roads of America and Europe, and especially in France. Do not spare them, attack them, kill them by all means: by car, with a knife, a gun or by causing a fire.”

Looks like a storm is brewing here. It has been fine for weeks, but now we have a strong, gusty NW wind, and it is clouded over. Still mild, but around here, when a norther blows in, it pushes warm air ahead of it, and it gets somewhat warmer until the warm air has moved on, and then the temp drops precipitously.

Life comes at you fast.
Was over to Bend OR this weekend. It has a rather robust population of hobos. North of town is a really big shanty town. Adjacent to the hotel we stayed in was a nice open field of cedars and scrub brush. And a shit ton of garbage. All I wanted to do was get a few good shots of the Three Sisters mountains at sunset. Instead, after seeing the detritus, I pondered what I might step on: human shit, possibly a bum. Beautiful part of America. But, well... The Equinox will be at 2:19PM EDT (18:19Z). While the term "equinox" means "equal night", the daylength will not be exactly 12 hours. The Sun is not a point, and sunrise and sunset are when the limb of the sun touches the horizon. They've taken to calling the day when night and day are a close to 12 hours each as the "equilux". It's never exactly 12 hours, and the duration and date vary a bit with latitude. For me here, the equilux will be the 26th, with a daylength of 11:59:21, which is the closest to 12 hours. Which route is preferable when traveling from Spearfish, SD to Devil's Tower? The northern route taking 85, 34, and then 24 OR the southern route - I90 to 14? Posted by: Tonypete at September 21, 2025 10:07 PM (cYBz/) Hmm, when we were at the sturgis rally we always took a route that was very close to spearfish. It ran right along the edge of belle fourche, and went through Aladdin and Hulett wyoming. 85 coming out of spearfish and heading towards bell fourche will take you right to it. I can't seem to get a name for the road. Its very scenic. You go through Aladdin, population 15. Make sure you stop at the little general store there. That said, there are huge parts of Oregon that want to secede and become part of Greater Idaho (even including Northern California). Saw banners to that effect along US 26. Basically their dream map keeps much of the state, excising the counties with Portland, Eugene, and Astoria. Pretty much the upper left corner of the state.

Maybe it's the way the shadows are falling, but the woman in the foreground seems twisted about 160 degrees at the waist-I think I'm looking at the backs of her knees. Woman on the right looks to be walking forward, but her skirt is flipped up like she's landing from a jump, but if that's the case she's not getting that foot back under her. And there's a leg just to the left of the woman in the foreground that looks like it's trying to connect to the gal in the air to the left. We have done both routes. It sort of depends on what you are after. If you are a fan of Close Encounters and want that approach come from the south off the interstate. You will recognize it. The northern route is a bit more scenic, winding through some of the hills and valleys around the Tower, and a couple little towns. Both get you there. I didn't look at all the license plates but a bit of trivia from my youth in Florida. Prior to going to the format with the map of the state in the late 70's, Florida's plate was red letters on a white background with a number format of XX-XXXXX. The first one or two digits before the dash was the county code based on some early census. So
1- XXXX WAS DADE county (Miami) I think 2- was Duval (Jacksonville), my home county of Palm Beach was 6-XXXXX. I still have one in the garage. Since there was no front plate people would put personalized plates. Around the same time the Highway Patrol started a safety campaign with the motto 'Arrive Alive' depicted as a license plate in red letters on a white background. It took about 5 minutes for front plates with 'Arrive Stoned' to appear! I still have one of those, too. Posted by: Anonymous Rogue in Kalifornistan (ARiK) at September 21, 2025 10:44 PM (QGaXH) 147

Bat Out of Hell was recorded about 15 miles from me at Bearsville Studio. Rundgren and Steinman could not find a distributor for the album. The legendary Clive Davis thought the album was ridiculous and had no chance. They finally found a company in Cleveland.

Another part of Life Comes At You Fast: My Mom is in the hospital, still, two weeks later, and is now fighting pneumonia. She is in Georgia. Brother and his wife are with her, but he asked that if we can do so, come visit her ASAP. Our plan is to drive to SLC and fly out with our son, who lives there. Boise does not have direct flights to ATL, but SLC does.

I finally figured out the reason for the seating order at that State Dinner. The Brits are big on precedence and protocol. Trump is the Big Kahuna, so he sat at the right hand of the King. The King sits at the center of the table. His wife, the Queen sits directly opposite him. So Melania, wife of the Big Kahuna, sits at the right hand of the Queen. Since JD Vance wasn't there, Marco Rubio, as Secretary of State, the highest ranking cabinet position, sat at the left hand of the King. Sec. Treasury is the 2nd highest ranking cabinet post, so he sat at the left hand of the Queen. Kate, Princes of Wales, wife of the heir, sat at Trump's right. William, Prince of Wales, 1st in line, sat at Melania's right. So there's precedence order, with boy-girl alternating thrown in. "Do not oppress a stranger; you yourselves know how it feels to be a stranger, because you were strangers in Egypt." Leviticus does not say foreigners, it says strangers. Strangers can be legally in the country , but have different clothing, or customs and you are not to abuse them. A poor translation corrupts the meaning and intent.

Rosh Hashanah (Jewish Civil New Year) runs this time from sunset 22nd to sunset 24. All these Revelation Prophecy diviner types are big on the Rosh Hashanah. Traditionally, that is held to be the anniversary of day Adam and Eve were created (I think -- the Jewish soli-lunar calendar gets a wee bit complex, makes my eyes glaze over). So, every so often one of these types, who don't understand "Of that day and that hour no man knoweth" does some calculation based on all sorts of numerology and Jewish calendar stuff and comes up with the Rapture date. Rosh Hashanah is almost always the big date. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at September 21, 2025 11:41 PM (w6EFb) 282

Now I am getting into the wonderful world of "how do I control torque converter lockup in the 700R4 transmission"? Seems easy enough; the transmission shop that did the rebuild wired it for "one wire" operation. Feed 12 volts to pin A on the bulkhead connector, and once the transmission shifts into fourth gear, the converter clutch solenoid is energized, and it locks up. But what if I want to accelerate in fourth gear, or encounter a hill? I'd like it to remain in fourth, but unlock the converter, so the engine can pick up revs, and develop a little more power on demand.

People stopped me on the street to compliment the hat and me. I had to carry it back to FL on my lap on the plane, and wore it in the Hotlanta airport. A waitress carded me simply to see my name for my gin and tonic (like I was famous and she might not know, otherwise I had not been carded in 20yrs).

Posted by: free tibet at September 22, 2025 12:08 AM (1wtUm) Modern cars have the lockup torque converter mediated by the engine management computer. 700R4 was used when engine computers were just beginning to be used, and indeed the computer did run that function on some models. Otherwise, they used a vacuum switch to permit lockup to happen only for part-throttle cruise. Also a brake switch to disengage lockup when braking. That's probably what I will have to do; vacuum switch plus brake light switch, and a relay or two. The tough nut to crack is getting this to also work when in third gear. Apparently there is no readily-accessible hydraulic pressure signal in that transmission to say "hey, I'm in third gear now." Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 22, 2025 12:19 AM (hA1Nw) 338

The home ec teacher in charge of the cheerleader squad thought I did this on purpose and was mad at me. I did not, as I was not yet 16yrs old and did care. Every boy in the school, some I did not know (not a huge school at all, 200 in HS) said they voted for me. Another thing that fascinates me about the seasons is they are not of equal length, due to the Erf's orbital eccentricity (ie ellipse, not a perfect circle with constant speed). Which is longer than which depends on the position of perihelion relative to the seasons. Right now, perihelion occurs in early Jan, in winter. Winter is thus the shortest season. Due to complex higher order effects, the length of each season varies a bit from year to year, but on average at current epoch it's this: Summer: 93.65 days, Spring: 92.76 days, Fall: 89.84 days, Winter: 88.99 days. This time around, astronomical summer 2025 was 93.651 days, or 93 days, 15 hours, and 37 minutes. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at September 22, 2025 12:31 AM (w6EFb) 347

Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at September 22, 2025 12:19 AM (YfDv3) Well, ideally, you want torque converter lockup at part-throttle cruise in any gear other than first. You lose about 200 engine rpm, and that is mostly wasted energy just churning the oil to make heat. Lockup in second is hardly worth the effort, but lockup in third would be nice for city driving. I rewired the transmission today to bring out two wires through the bulkhead connector. One powers the solenoid by way of the internal 4th gear pressure switch; the other goes direct to the solenoid. Posted by: qdpsteve at September 22, 2025 01:49 AM (/p+XQ) All service work is repetitive. Having done recaps on radios, I can say, "It's not that hard." Assuming you are talking about the old paper caps under the chassis; they are quite bulky. The little yellow Mylar caps used to replace them are about a quarter of the bulk, so you have room to work. What I do is clip off the leads of the old cap about 1/4" proud of the solder lug or tube socket pin to which they are soldered, and take them out of the chassis. Take the new yellow cap, and wind a few turns of its leads (which are normally thinner wire) around the lead of the discard cap, making a tight coil, and clip off the excess. You have now made a small sleeve on each lead of the new cap. Slip those sleeves over the stubs of the old cap leads on the chassis, and solder. Done! Rinse and repeat until all are done, one at a time. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 22, 2025 01:58 AM (hA1Nw) 447

I want to try doing it at least once. Have read that when it comes to old dead tape machines, the caps are quite often the culprit, and if they can be rejuvenated/replaced, miracles can happen. I learned from a self-taught course a few years ago, caps are kind of long-term batteries built into these old things, to micro-power various components. Weird thing to have on my bucket list I know, but oh well. :-) Posted by: qdpsteve at September 22, 2025 02:01 AM (/p+XQ) 449

With this damned RA, I've learned all about NSAIDs. They can all be bad, and long term use of all them is not good. Me, I take as little now as possible. I broke down and tool some Naproxen, which used to be pretty good for me. My stomach 12 hours later didn't think so at all. Ibuprofen used to be pretty good, but if I take it for a few days, my blood pressure will start creeping up. Aspirin seems to be the least problematic, now. I took Meloxicam for a long time years ago, until it started tearing my stomach up. That's what long term use can do. I think once you get sensitized to it, that's all she wrote. Hi JQ, my kids told me that all of the pain remedies in the medicine cabinet are expired. I need to buy more but I just don't think of it that often.

I know that back in the 1980s, there was a lot of talk about Reye's Syndrome. Taught me that you should NEVER take aspirin on an empty stomach.

Counting them all up, I'd guess that I take *maybe* a dozen 200mg ibuprofen tabs per year.
Depends on how many boo-boos I get, LOL! Posted by: JQ at September 22, 2025 02:12 AM (rdVOm) 456
:-) Posted by: qdpsteve at September 22, 2025 02:01 AM (/p+XQ) No, caps are not "long-term" batteries; quite the opposite. They hold a charge for a fraction of a second. They will allow an alternating current to pass, but block DC. In an audio amp, like a tape recorder, they are used to couple audio from one stage to another, or to bypass unwanted signal to ground, or as part of a filter to block or enhance certain frequencies. There were "bias cells" in some old radio receivers built in the 1930's. They looked like tiny coolie hats made of dull metal. Provided about 1 volt DC at nearly zero current capacity. They went out of fashion about 1940, so you would likely never find one in a tape recorder. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 22, 2025 02:12 AM (hA1Nw) 457
Never understood why people are so quick to try to refuce fever. It serves a purpose. My grandmother kept an eye on our fevers, and didn't let them get super high, and never gave us anything unless it did, and even then, I seem to recall she'd let it go for awhile. We were seldom sick, but we recuperated quickly when we did come down with anything. She was very strict about us resting after we'd been sick, and very specific about what she fed us as we were recuperating.

>>> The loss suffered by Erika Kirk and her children is unfathomable. She and Charlie really seemed made for each other, and now he's gone and she has to be not only as strong as anyone, but also step into the role of leader, when I'm sure she just wants to just curl up with her babies and cry. Posted by: LASue at September 21, 2025 11:03 PM
One of the simplest yet most touching speeches for me was the lady that lost her husband to cancer, and then her home burned in the Palisades fire. The Kirks told her, see, it's a sign you and your daughter need to move to AZ! They did and the Kirks enfolded them into their arms and their home. The lady said now she and her daughter will be the ones enfolding Erika and her babies into their arms and taking care of THEM. Grateful the Kirks built a lifetime of friends who will do everything humanely possible to get them through this. I'm sure Erika will have moments of curling up in a ball, and just needing to hug her babies. And people around her will protect her so she can grieve as she needs to, while taking up the torch of her husband's mission and legacy. I loved hearing the TPUSA events are not going away. Need them more than ever. Posted by: LizLem at September 22, 2025 02:23 AM (gWBY1) 465
Also interesting. The autism report may also link folic acid deficiency during pregnancy. Folate (vitamin B9) is very important during pregnancy, and I think folate supplementation is regularly advised during pregnancy for that reason. They are also going to recommend leucovorin as a possible treatment. Leucovorin, folinic acid, is the "activated" form of folate. Regular folate needs to be metabolized before it can be used. Folinic acid can act directly. This was used as a "rescue" for methotrexate, which is anti-folate chemotherapy agent. I know about that, as low dose methotrexate is a standard treatment for RA -- I don't take that anymore either. Folate supplementation was standard with methotrexate treatment for RA. So that's all interesting. We'll just have to wait and see what the report actually says. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at September 22, 2025 02:23 AM (w6EFb) 466
Loved the fashion thread! I liked the Melania yellow dress; with her coloring any color is good. It was bold but it did what she wanted it to do.
Kate's gold gown was jaw dropping. That's how you make a post cancer comeback statement! There was a white lace dress worn by I think the wife of the Turning Point Chief of Staff that I loved. Almost too showy, but gorgeous. And I loved Erika's simple white pantsuit. Posted by: LizLem at September 22, 2025 02:26 AM (gWBY1) 467

This folic acid thing is going to be very complicated. Supplements, called folic acid, is not the natural form of folate. Guess what, there is some evidence that high levels of unmetabolized folic acid may correlate with autism. That is, a pregnant mothers taking too much folic acid supplements might be a bad thing. So, very complex.... Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at September 22, 2025 02:29 AM (w6EFb) 470
We need our resident Hungarian Hordeling Miklos to help us understand this!
Grave Diggers Compete in the 8th International Grave Digging Championship I think I can explain. An old friend and superb musician from Hungary named Tamas Szabo (master harmonica player and bluesman) has played with a guy originally from North Carolina called Big Daddy Wilson. Their blues band is named the Mississippi Grave Diggers. Some actual grave diggers were at one of their shows and decided to start something to add some fun to a not very fun job once per year. https://tinyurl.com/53j4b9tw Posted by: Ever Helpful Miklos at September 22, 2025 02:31 AM (EPmva) 471
And B12 forms play a role as well. Apparently high unmetabolized folic acid and high B12 levels during pregnancy correlates with autism. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at September 22, 2025 02:31 AM (w6EFb) 472
There's apparently a genetic factor. Converting folic acid to folate requires some enzymes, and some people don't do this a well as others. You know what the best sources of folate are? Leafy greens. Spinach, turnip greens, etc. So maybe, recommend pregnant women eat a shit ton of that. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at September 22, 2025 02:42 AM (w6EFb) 473

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at September 22, 2025 01:41 AM (XeU6L) Tylenol never did a damned thing for me. Aspirin works for muscle pain. Ibuprofen eased, but did not remove, the pain from menstrual cramps. The only thing that touches my headaches is tramadol. At some point, you are just gonna be in pain. I complained about menstrual cramps to my Dr, back in the 1970s. He prescribed something with codeine in it-- BARF city! I was puking up stuff I hadn't even eaten yet..
But Motrin... got 800mg tabs after wisdom teeth extraction.. THAT worked on the cramps! I love leafy greens, especially fresh. Except swiss chard-- Mom grew that all the time & we ate it almost every dinner when I was little. Bleh... And I've had kidney stones, but current Dr. swears it's due to too much salt (after analyzing one of my stones) I love salt. Have cut waaayyyy back. Greens are a "once in a while" thing, maybe once a week now. Posted by: JQ at September 22, 2025 02:55 AM (rdVOm) Posted by: JQ at September 22, 2025 02:59 AM (rdVOm) 478
I can't take aspirin because of my esophagus.
And Tylenol leaves me hung over the next day, very loggy. Now, I just use a turmeric - ginger - zinc - D3 supplement, which I got off of Amazon. And it comes with its own little plastic cocaine spoon, which leaves me quite mirth full for some reason.... Posted by: Mister Ghost at September 22, 2025 03:04 AM (TGPs7) 479

Charlie Kirk's wife is perfectly welcome to forgive the scum who assassinated her husband. I hold her in total reverence for being who she is. At the same time, there is no personal forgiveness in me for what he did. Just as there is none for 9-11. Posted by: IRONGRAMPA at September 22, 2025 03:08 AM (vFbHf) The problem with not forgiving these asshats is that they end up owning a piece of you, and that will be your peace. You don't have to think what they did was okay--it wasn't. You don't even have to like them, not even a little. But if you don't forgive them, they will stick in your craw forever, so they have won. I wouldn't give them that satisfaction. Pity is a good substitute, until you can forgive. They are really beneath contempt, but the problem is that God made them just like he made me. What if nobody ever forgave my bonehead choices? That would suck. Jesus loves assholes, too. Darned if I can figure out why. The best I can say about Melania is that she is beautiful and always looks good, despite her best efforts. 😉 Also, bare shoulders at such occasions generally call for long gloves, not long sleeves. She and Tiffany were both dressed more for a Hollywood gala than a State event at Buck.
The Princess of Wales was almost perfect; her hair looked a bit sloppy the front. She needs to wear it up and back around her face when she wears a tiara. She can get away with it loose down her back for now, though one could quibble about it being too much against all the lacy texture. The gown was gorgeous. She is far too thin and I worry that we aren't being told the entire truth about her health, but she was very thin before her diagnosis, so she didn't have any stores to draw from, and hopefully that's it. Something looks different about the area around her mouth, can't put my finger on it. The Queen Consort did not come to play! I can't tell if we were treated to the full 5 strands or the usual 3, but talk about the armor of God! 😂 Not shaming, if I had that necklace, I'd never take it off, but she's usually not that gaudy! 🤣 Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at September 22, 2025 03:13 AM (Vvh2V) 488
