Gun Thread: 3rd September Edition!

092125 calendar scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the 3rd September edition?! The October 17th & 18th TXMoMe is getting closer! More on that below.

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

FUNdamentals of MoMe'n: TXMoMe X

092125 TX MoMe X image scaled.jpg
They MoMe'n down in Texas!

9/21/25 NOTE: No schedule update yet this week. Next week for sure, but you can expect roughly the same shooting program start/stop times from prior years; Friday 8am - 4pm, and Saturday 9am to 1pm. Also I have heard back from almost all RSO's, so thank you for that! If you have replied and not received an acknowledgement from me by now, please drop me a note. Appreciate it!

The time has come to begin the discussion of the upcoming TXMoMe in Corsicana, TX on October 17-18. This is the TENTH annual TXMoMe, or Conservative Burning Man as it's popularly known, and it promises to be a doozy. If you're in either the Northern or Southern Hemisphere of the Planet of the Earth, contact Ben Had for details on attending. The dates and email links for all MoMes are always helpfully included on the blog's main page, left sidebar.

What started years ago as a small get-together and informal plinking session lasting a couple of hours has matured into a full scale jamboree-hootenanny including a program of shooting activities for both handguns and rifles over two days. I have to thank Ben Had, Cow Horse Queen and RancherBob for making this whole thing happen and providing the opportunity for the shooting to comprise such a significant portion of the event.

But wait! There's more! Combine that with world class food and drink, and the even world classier company of your fellow Morons, and you have a weekend that legends are made of. For those not inclined to shoot (?), there are non-stop opportunities to relax in the shade of the carport or under a handy nearby tree with a beverage and visit with your online pals to your hearts content, which is really what the whole damn thing is about in the first place..

Allow me to be serious for a minute. I have said this probably two hundred and fifty-seven times now. These gatherings are a really good time, and I know of no one who expresses regret after having attended one. Actually it goes beyond that. It's not just a weekend of laughs, it's an opportunity to connect with lots of like-minded people and create lasting friendships and priceless memories. No kidding. Think that's hyperbole? It snot. Would your ol' pal Weasel lie to you? Well, yes he would, but not about this. TXMoMe veterans will attest to the funness and completely laid-back nature of the event. Don't be a dork, do yourself a favor and get yo' ass to Texas!

Specifics of the Friday/Saturday schedule of activities will be posted here in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.

TXMoMe veterans: please jump into the comments to encourage the scairdy-cats to join in the fun! What was your first MoMe like? What were you expecting? Were you surprised? Did you have a great time?

Call for Volunteers
Help! As I mentioned above, the shooting program in Texas continues to grow, and we wouldn't be able to do it without a lot of help. If you're interested in lending a hand in some capacity, please drop me a note at gunthread at protonmail dot com indicating your date and time of arrival and we'll be in touch. Thank You!

If you are attending the TXMoMe this year, and all the cool kids are, please keep an eye on this section for important information and updates in the coming weeks! I also want to reiterate the TXMoMe is not a gun thing with some socializing attached, but rather is a social thing with some shooting attached. If you aren't a shooter, I guarantee you will not feel out of place and will have a great time. No fooling!

Are all y'all getting excited? Weasel are!!

Future expansion plans are in the works for the site Weasel Gun Thread. If you have a question you would like to ask Gun Thread Staff offline, just send us a note and we'll do our best to answer. 12 Things have been peaceful at church, but I'm still putting in my reps with my church gun, getting my trigger finger callus back. (There is probably something wrong with how I'm pressing the trigger if I'm getting a blister/callus, isn't there?)

Did some draw + fire drills. Not perfect, but pretty good. head sized targets at 10 yards, all hits...except that sometime if I'm not patient enough, I throw flyers. Frustrating. I can only pray I don't do that if it is game time.

The PSA Micro Dagger is a good tool. It is time to buy a second one.

22 Welp, made a 1,000 yard match and finally started moving my score the right direction. My wind calls were okay and I managed to shoot an 87. Certainly not championship scores, but, with my dreadful showings the last couple of outings, I'm happy to trend in a different direction.

34 The Colt M1911 is an example of where slow and sure wins the race. John Browning and Colt, by taking ten years to develop the concepts in the prototypes, examine other offerings, and work out the bugs (and there were quite a few), ended up producing a design that would go on to serve as the US military's sidearm for 75 years. The last M45A1s (the only variant not seen in the video) did not leave USMC service until 2023, capping the 1911's run as a US standard issue sidearm at 112 years.

"Last Man on Earth" is the only adaptation of "The Omega Man" where Richard Matheson wrote the script. However, someone else re-wrote it so he used a pseudonym.

I own several PSA AR 15's. Unless you're putting over 10k rounds through them, they are very solid rifles. Work well. Some durability issues over the long term but few people will encounter them and they have a good warranty if they do.

75 Good evening all

Something magical about 1911s. When picking up one of my Glocks I am immediately thinking about all kinds of things. Sighting or trigger pull or grip. Pickup my Kimber or Blaster's or Hrothgar's and I just shoot and hit the target. 9mm or 45 doesn't matter.
Just something about 1911s....

76 My experience is that it shoots 168s and 175s extremely well, but hates the 150s. I only found one load that was acceptable. Let me know how yours does.
It took me a little bit of time, but it’s one of my two favorite rifles now.

84 Range report: I took the H&K CC9 and .32 ACP Walther PPK to the range. Fired about 40 round through the CC9 and 25 through the PPK. Shot both two handed at 10 and 15 yards, one handed (strong side) at 7 yards using an FBI silhouette target. From 10 yards, I landed most of my shots center of mass. One handed at 7 yards and two handed at 15 were mediocre. Shooting .32 ACP with the PPK one handed is definitely easier than using 9mm in the CC9.

106 Ah, the Gun Thread. Yesterday I went to the range for some hot Makarov-on-Makarov action. Specifically, I pitted a Bulgarian Makarov against a Polish P64, which is also 9x18mm.

The P64 is really nice. Good aesthetics, nice balance, feels good in the hand, and while the DA trigger is horrifically bad, the single action is excellent. It feels like an upper-tier central European .32 police pistol. I bet in .32 it would be a real sweetheart.

It is horrific in 9mm Makarov. The lighter weight makes this thing truly punishing to shoot. I hear people describe .380 as "snappy," but this little bugger is made of pure hate. After a bit of firing it, my palms were red, and when i offered it to a range companion, he only fired three rounds before handing it back.

Yet I persisted, and in time figured out that by keeping my lower fingers tight and the rest of my hand loose, I could bleed the excess recoil in to barrel rise. I'm not worried about limp-wristing because there is too much energy in the little bugger. It's got a fixed barrel so there is plentyof blowback to spare.

The Makarov was fine, and I got much better groups.

107 Ammo. I have been buying the cheapest .308 you can get usually. 147 grain. Have had decent results from it but we have started buying match grade for the longer ranges. sra blaster is intent on ringing the thousand so buying some spendier ammo. Dropped in the Sportsman's Warehouse and looked at all their stock and decided on some Hornady Match 178 grain BTHP. I bought 4 boxes of 20 and sra blaster says that is not enough. So I was able to track down the exact same ammo online for 2/3s the price - but only one outlet had that price everywhere else was close to the retail price at Sportsman's. So I got 4 more boxes.

Going to carry along some of our cheaper ammo too for more shooting.

Plugged the info into the Hornady DOF app so we will see how that goes.

112 There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated
Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever
known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an
American at all.

This is just as true of the man who puts "native" before the hyphen as of the man who puts German
or Irish or English or French before the hyphen. Americanism is a matter of the spirit and of the soul.
Our allegiance must be purely to the United States. We must unsparingly condemn any man who
holds any other allegiance.

But if he is heartily and singly loyal to this Republic, then no matter where he was born, he is just as
good an American as anyone else.

118 The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its
continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities,
an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans,
Scandinavian-Americans, or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart
feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality than with the other citizens of the American
Republic.

"The men who do not become Americans and nothing else are hyphenated Americans; and there
ought to be no room for them in this country. The man who calls himself an American citizen and who
yet shows by his actions that he is primarily the citizen of a foreign land, plays a thoroughly
20 mischievous part in the life of our body politic. He has no place here; and the sooner he returns to the
land to which he feels his real heart-allegiance, the better it will be for every good American."

Every now and again Centerfire Systems in KY comes up with some old milsurps and they did have Walther PPs a while back. Good to bookmark and check if you want a shooter, not a collector model. Old Western Scrounger also comes up with some odd items from time to time.

It really makes me sad, because I haven't been able to shoot it since I got it - there was some sort of problem with the barrel tilt mechanism, and it wouldn't close to shoot. It has not been tested by me because by the time I got it back from the Beretta fixers, I was already undergoing treatment for my cancer.

Might try to shoot it while I am at the MoMe - it will depend on my muscle strength on the day of.

207 Duty day at the range was fairly mellow. Did manage to try out my 30-06 loads with the “new” bullet, just another 150g FMJBT, using same load of TAC, but bullet has a canneleure that’s exposed in my load (OAL 3.3). They work fine.

Time of year where non-members show up to zero their hunting rifles, had just a few this day. But 2 interesting ones close to closing time. One Navy kid who’s a real hunter (bear, elk, cougar, and archery as well) was able to help the young dude-bro who showed up at the very end (kept the range open past closing for them). Young guy is on the US Olympic rugby team, that lives/trains here. He’s also a local, which surprised me. Anyway I paid attention as the Navy guy helped bore-sight/zero the youngster’s rifle. It’s a useful skill, we get a lot of people who need that help, and our sighting guru on my team sadly passed away back in December.

US went a bit stupidly into that one. US needed a new rifle due to the new spitzer bullets and stripper clips and the Krag just was not going to cut it. So they combined Krag features like the two piece firing pin setup and the bolt safety with Mauser locking lugs in front. Not enough difference between the designs for Springfield Armory to get away with violating Mauser patents.

Can't honestly remember whether Britain or US paid Mauser royalties for the P14/1917 design--those were even more Mauser like than the 1903. Better design than the m98 too--but heavy. Best issue sights in WWI for that matter.

214 If Colt wants to print some money, it needs to do new replica versions of the Pocket Hammerless in .32 and .380, and then do polymer upgrades for modern carry.

They could print their own money.
Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd at September 21, 2025 08:27 PM (ZOv7s)

Colt has licensed production of both the 1903 (,32ACP) and 1908 (.380 ACP) to US Armament MFG. You can choose between the parkerized ($1,799 MSRP), blued ($1,999 MSRP) and royal blue ($2,249 MSRP). Everything is still machined and finished per the old school Colt way, which is why the prices are a bit high. No polymers, no MIM parts.

218 Can't honestly remember whether Britain or US paid Mauser royalties for the P14/1917 design--those were even more Mauser like than the 1903. Better design than the m98 too--but heavy. Best issue sights in WWI for that matter.

Not disputing but I wonder what patent they would have infringed. The P14/17 is cock on close like an Enfield, so not the typical Mauser action. Maybe it was the stripper clip.

I put an order into the CMP for and M1917 that was used as a parade/ceremonial rifle. These are the last they have, and they did a price drop because they are trying to clear them out. (They clarify that you will NOT get one of the chromed versions!)

They used to be by snail mail, but they are going electronic, so I will see how this goes. I want one of their 1911s as soon as I dig out of the M1917 hole.

They will soon be offering 1903A3s that were used as parade rifles and were 'deactivated' but have since been restored. CMP is a freaking drug.

Keep in mind that these reproductions use more modern, stronger steels than the Colt originals. If you're going to shoot it a lot, you might be better off with a reproduction than buying and beating up an original. Also, the modern finishes are more durable than those of yesteryear. The old Colt bluing jobs are true works of art, but they won't stand up to the hundreds of rounds per session that serious shooters will throw at them.

I simply doubt it though I would love to go this year and kept putting off making a final decision. Health keeps going sideways and I really did not want to harsh the mellow here.

FWIW, I have lost about half of my grip strength in my dominant hand in the last two years. My non-dominant is about twice as strong. And both docs and pt tell me that is gone for good due to nerve damage from compression. Basically I have a complication of psoriatic arthritis called ankylosing spondylitis of the spine--mid stage but progressive deterioration. And that means too widespread spinal damage to operate.

And the current Big Insurance drug is not doing much to stop the progression imho. They forced me off Humira two years ago (bioequivalent was now available) for a different one and that one doesn't seem to be doing much despite being at its highest dose now.

In full battle rattle, the 1917 is so heavy that even 174gr 30-06 have a very mild kick. They are about as heavy as the Garand. The P14 is an especial hoot to shoot in 303. Heavy as the 1917 but the 303 is a lighter kicking round. Century International, back a ways, built some 300 Win Mags out of P14 receivers (due to cartridge length and mag, the P14 receiver and feeding rails is a better fit.). That is one strong receiver.

Unless you have one of the super rare variants, it's .45 ACP all the way. Same ammo as the GI 1911. Make sure they're 230 grain, full metal jacket rounds. Do not attempt to use hollow points or anything other than full metal jacketed rounds. General Thompson specifically called for his namesake gun to use GI .45 ACP ammo (i.e. 230 grain full metal jacket rounds).

For those with 'shaved' Webleys, Steinel is now offering downloaded .45 ACP specifically for Webleys. You can use the full moon clips and everything, and it's much cheaper than .455 and you don't need to rig an adapter.

Even better, it's cheaper than normal .45 ACP because less powder. Very thoughtful. I put some on the clock, and the average velocity of six shots was 497.5 fps, a bit slower than 557.3 for the .455. Just for fun I ran some through a Ballester-Molina and it was almost exactly 200 fps slower than standard loads.

What the falling prices do is make other stuff more accessible. I've about had it with PPU .32 S&W Long. Hard primers and very smokey. Gotta be a better option.

278 I noticed the nuance of not particularly inviting the scaredy cats to encroach on the comments, but here I am…
I have enjoyed this site since around THE 9-11, and am in awe of the comraderie , intelligence, flat-out hilariousness , and serious insight of all of you!
But, I’m an introvert. I like guns, have some, shoot them no nearly enough, and have little concept of this weird, foreign thing Weasel calls fundamentals.
My handle is less what it seems, and is a total reflection of my actual surname.
If you can convince me to come, this detail may be revealed…
I want to come. I think I need to come. Make me want to attend. Admittedly, I’m from CA, but the good part. The completely un-represented part.
I could absorb some skills, which seems…desirable.
So, where do I fly in? Stay? Recover from excessive bourbon and cigars, etc.?
I need some encouragement here. Can Y’all help?

289 Started getting back into gubs just before the catastrophic election of 2008. So I experienced the panic buying/prices phenomenon immediately.

Started reloading not long before the Newtown incident. So I learned pretty quickly about component panics/pricing.

Based on those formative experiences, and one of my few correct specific predictions (ever) - that CA would before long enact some idiotic unconstitutional law making ammo purchasing more difficult and expensive - I set about stocking up on both ammo and components.

Thanks to reloading I have a "reserve" set aside of all my basic calibers (factory ammo) that I haven't touched, many years later. And with some minor restocking along the way (powder, bullets), have plenty of components.

Moral of the story obvious and simple. Stock up when prices and budgets allow, taking into account what and how much you shoot.

Personally, I'm flying into DFW, renting a car and driving down, then plan on staying in a nearby motel. I will be paying for extra baggage so I can bring pistols (in checked luggage) AND a double rifle case.

I was originally going to dive, but not having any PTO at my new job nixed that. (I was gonna bring EVERYTHING if I did that.)

As to why you should come? I've only been to the NoVaMoMes. But I have met some of the absolutely best people and enjoyed the time with them. And I'm a bit of a misanthrope, so that's a real compliment to these folks.

317 Gunslinger, yes, SoCal. I actually have rarely bought ammo since the latest idiotic law was enacted a few years ago (or even before that, thanks to reloading). And as noted I stockpiled years back for multiple reasons not CA-specific.

Reloading. Super concise version. If you shoot enough, and/or shoot expensive calibers, reloading could be for you. It's fun, gives you flexibility in making ammo "custom" for you, and of course disconnects you from ammo panics and prices. Depending where you live, maximize purchase of used reloading equipment. Most of it is industrial quality and will outlive all of us, buying used is rarely any kind of gamble.

Lots more but that's a basic framework.

323 Gunslinger, as Oddbob said, your choice of reloading equipment depends on your shooting habits. High volume, competitive handgunner (even at a recreational level) - you might consider a progressive press. Otherwise, turret, single-stage presses will be fine. I have a Lee 4-hole turret press (convertible to single stage in 5 seconds for heavy/rifle brass work) that easily keeps me supplied in 7 calibers. Start with your volume, and type, of shooting. Go from there.

As of this moment, I am planning to drive from Apache Junction, AZ, to Corsicana on the 15th - 16th. I have a room booked at Motel 6 in Corsicana, with 2 beds. My expected travel partner is unable to make it, so the second bed in the room is currently not allocated. I am hoping that Moron lurker Osprey, who lives in Mesa, will be able to join me, but at last report he is stuck with Jury duty for that time period. In the event that he can reschedule jury duty, he has first dibs on the extra bed if he wants it. If he's stuck with jury service, it's up for grabs. But the road trip from AJ to Corsicana is available in any case. Lots of room in the old Suburban.

344 Now that we're back home in Texas I would really love to attend my first TexMoMe. My father-in-law has an incredible collection of some beautiful pieces that he's passing along to us. Some from Texas Rangers that have a history and should go to a museum. I may need some help going through all of it.

Unfortunately he is in the final phase of his battle with cancer - back home with hospice care, keeping him comfortable with morphine as his time runs down. It's the best version of what is still possible. His friends are making their way over to say goodbye, his family is at peace with it feeling as if they did everything they could. But he's likely to pass within a week or two. And it just wouldn't be appropriate for me to travel during the first stages of morning. So mark me for next year

345 Funny story, part of his collection left to us will be my own AR-15 which I've nicknamed Nemesis (Clegane vouce: of course you named your sword SMH)

Backstory: fresh out of the Marine Corps, just started dating his daughter and my future wife. He's former Army Col, border patrol agent, detective for local PD. Doesn't say much, doesn't like talkers, hard to get a read on, puts the C on curmugion. Marine Corps Infantry? Was only enough to get me through the front door. But sweetheart says we're invited to go shoot at the range tomorrow. I smile ear to ear. I'm Chuck Liddel shadow boxing in the red corner. My moment has come. Its my time now...

Back in boot camp when we first drew our weapons from the Armory it felt so awkward and heavy. By the time I got out 6 years later it was like an extension of my arm. Feels good to hold it again, even the civilian model.

I do my safety checks, coil my sling and prepare to shoot from the standing position. Bit of a bold move, its the least stable position and I didn't BZO but Im a good shooter, qualified expert every year, my average is around 236. Not worthy of sniper school (248 out of 250) but nothing to sneeze at. ...aim small miss small...visions of him introducing me around as his future son-in-law and top shooter....breathe relax aim CRACK!...smug coolness.. "hmmm no impact no idea"

WHAT? no panic, this has happened before. I must have hit the target dead center, shot hole must have got lost in all the re-tape. Quit fcking around and focus...CRACK.. "sorry no impact no idea". Future wife, bless her "try my 9mm for a minute? Something seems off" which I realized would be a better end than missing paper 3 tim

347 I swear I saw him grin. Did he play with the sights as insurance to keep me off balance and less confident? I would have LOL.

So to this day I have looked at that AR sideways. Soon I'll test that baby to destruction and figure what the hell happened that day

349 Went out and practiced today. First time I've been guilt-free reading the Gun Thread for awhile. Feels good. Thanks, Gun Thread!
