Meet The PetMorons

It is a bittersweet day here. The babies will be going to their new forever homes in the next few days. I haven't posted for the last 2 weeks because everything here is status quo. They are all doing very well.
As you can see in this pic, they are very active and flying all over the house. They are perching on the kitchen cabinets in this last family image. Two are on my shoulder as I type this.
At this point I think some thanks are in order.
First, I would like to thank K.T. and Ace for providing me this platform to share with you this journey from hatchling to adolescence.
Second, I would like to thank my wife for introducing me to the wonderful world of birds more than a few years ago. She is a fairly private person and wished not to be named in these posts, but she calls the shots (past, present and future) with respect to these chicks. I always respect her wishes.
Lasty, and foremost, I would like to thank you, good reader. Without you the Pet Thread and AoS as a whole would not be a thing. May God bless you all.

A long time lurker, I really enjoy the pet thread,
and finally got around to putting something together.
This handsome devil is an Australian Shepherd. (this pic was taken a while ago, he's now 10)

The Australian Shepherd breed standard calls for a docked tail, so I named him "Bob",
but before long his name became Bob Dammit.
"Bob, Dammit shut up!"
" Bob, Dammit get out of there!"
" Bob, Dammit will you leave the cat alone?""
The cat in question is Lady Harriet Needlefoot, who Bob adores and continually tries to herd.

Her consort is Lord Oswald Plushbottom, Destroyer of Furniture, who adores Bob and follows him around,
constantly trying to snuggle up any time he lays down.

The cats kind of match!

Together they are .....Ozzie and Harriet!
Unfortunately, hardly anyone knows who Ozzie and Harriet were anymore.

What a great trio of friends!

6 I have a game cam set up to monitor the food bowl on the covered porch. I always check it before bed and delete the photos. I looked at ir the other night. There was a picture of Mr Troubles carrying a dead cottontail. I know he can hunt, because that's how he survived his first year. And he did catch a smaller rabbit that he didn't kill and I was able to rescue .

Explains why he wasn't interested in canned catfood.

9 So Kroger let loose with his usual hellhound bark today. Normally, this means nothing but this time he was drawing attention to two stray dogs in our yard. I suspect they are from the house two doors down from us and the invisible fence failed.

22 My cat Jasmine is pretty chatty. She loves to meow at me just because.

Allie also can meow quite a bit.

Penny meows sometimes but not often. Same with Hexie.

Kaylee can't do a proper meow (unless I'm taking her to the vet). She whispers instead.

Lord Oswald and Lady Harriet are beautiful cats. Lord Oswald -- if he's the white-and-black longhair -- is almost a ringer for my late Chekov D. Siberian. And I did not know that Australian shepherds like Bob could be shaggy. Or does their fur grow out in winter and shed in spring?

Big black Stirling and little gray Dagny are well. Stirling sleeps with me off and on, and still milk-treads my thigh and sits in my lap -- but not for long at any one time. Compared to her former aloof stance, Dagny is practically gushing. She often follows me into the bathroom when she knows (somehow) that I'm about to shave or brush my teeth, and lounges on the bathroom counter. And we have our "toss for a point" game. I throw one of her small toys across the room. She races for it. touches it with a paw . . . and then races back to me, so I have to walk across and throw the toy again in the other direction.

I maintain to this day that big red Arizona knew three English words: "Arizona," "No," and "feed." Of which the last was more important and would make him perk up. "No" meant he glanced at me and continued doing what he wanted anyway, and his name meant he would also look at, and sometimes get up and walk to, me.

Marie-Antoinette the medium-haired smart black cat knew any part of her name, "Marie" or "Twa-nette," and would trot over to you. This was more remarkable in that it was almost certainly not the name she was called with her first owner, before Linda's classmate rescued her. She learned "Marie" later in her life (as she learned so many things).

30 Disturbing dream last night. Including my beloved green nape lorikeet. Lost to an abattoir veterinarian. He was in an old cage of his, in my parent's backyard. He had mutilated his feathers as some parrots do. It was as if I had abandoned him there. He wasn't happy to see me as he always was. But he did acknowledge me. Weird dream.

37 Progress report on Sammy, Publius' latest project:

He comes up to the house now and hangs out on the porch, meows for food (which he gets pretty much whenever he asks). Purry watches balefully from the other side of the sliding glass doors. He is not pleased.

Sammy makes himself at home on the comfortable chairs, attentive to the night noises. He may hang out for a few hours, or he may return to the darkness like the black cat he is.

The other night I brought 2 cat toys out to the porch - a teaser wand with feathers and a squeaky thing dangling from it, and a catnip infused cloth carrot (a proven winner). He seemed alarmed by both items. I think maybe he's never had a cat toy before.

A few manufacturers sell "rabbit flavored" cat food, but it is typically VERY expensive.

40 Pet adjacent: my chonky groundhog has a mate (or a roommate; I'm not feeling around to find out) and judging by the big mounds of dirt under the back porch steps, they are building a burrow.

There are two skunks that hang around too, so maybe it's a pan-species commune.

Her long-ago predecessor, Tatiana the Wonder Siberian, would leap after her rubber ball, seize it in her small jaws, and trot back to drop it at my feet. I could play with her without getting up. Even Chekov, not a "fetch" kind of cat, did it on occasion. Arizona did it from time to time, but erratically, and less often as he grew older.

AZ and I had a game where I tossed a crumpled sheet of paper up the townhouse stairs. If it landed above a certain step, he had to trot down and bat it back to me. If it was below that point, I had to climb up and throw the paper again. He and I played that almost every day until we moved from that townhouse. If I have stairs in my future house, I'll see if the current furry thugs would like to play such a game.

Bride of PI and I used to do Shakespeare names for our cats, based on their personalities.

Now that the kids are naming the cats, we have:

Coco-Nut
Momma Kitty
Fish
Squeaker

Based on how the cats react to their names, the kids may be better at naming cats.
