When we lived in Miami, we hired a helicopter to take us on a tour of Miami as a treat for my older son's 6th birthday, and it was wonderful. He flew over the tall buildings downtown, and out over Biscayne Bay, and returned by way of the high rises on Brickell Avenue. I took a movie of it (and then idiotically recorded over most of it at a later date).

I got interested in just where this latest prediction came from. Rosh Hashanah is Sept. 22 - 24th, sundown to sundown on those dates. This is the start of the 7th month of the Jewish luni-solar calendar, and marks the start of the civil new year (when the year number is incremented).
Rosh Hashanah has always been big with lot of this stuff. They divine numerological cycles out of the Old Testament, and tie that in with the Jewish calendar cycles and all that. I remember several of these over the decades.
But this time, no such "calculations", just basically Tik Tok -- some South African preacher named Joshua Mhlakela claimed Jesus appeared in a vision and told him Rosh Hashanah was D-day. That then went viral on Tik Tok.

I think tradition holds that Rosh Hashanah is the anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve. I'm not sure but I think that's the case. Whether that was year 1 or year 0, I'm not sure.

When I was in graduate school, a few days before I completed my studies, I had a dream that I was walking across the campus on a beautiful sunny day, excited about graduation, when, suddenly, a giant alarm clock went off in the sky (an enormous version of an old bedside clock of the sort you might have seen in a farmhouse back in the day). People around me were confused and scared, and we gathered around a priest who was standing nearby. And then it hit me that this was the Second Coming - and I, with extraordinary bad grace, got pissed off that I wasn't going to graduate after paying all that tuition.

Lunar calendars tend to make my eyes glaze over (the sun and Moon just don't commensurate well at all).
But I got interested in the Jewish calendar a while back to follow along for a while before my eyes glazed again.
Interestingly, the Moon is the most important thing there -- ie tracking the moon to keep the months aligned over the long term. The Jewish calendar uses a very close approximation for the mean synodic month of 29.530594 mean solar days.
To the highest precision with modern ephemeris, that value is currently 29.5305888531 ephemeris/SI days. I'm too lazy to convert that to J2000 epoch mean solar days, but it's close.
IOW, the Jewish calendar is within 1/2 second of the actual value.

Now, the Jewish calendar doesn't track the tropical year, that is the seasonal alignment as well. It maintains a leap month (13 months every so often) according to the Metonic Cycle, and drifts a bit.
It's better than the Julian calendar, but worse than the Gregorian.

After the long drive today, I'm tired. And I have the original 1963 Pink Panther w/ Claudia Cardinale and the young Robert Wagner on from TCM. The TV is in a lousy spot whether you'd in the bed or on the mini-sofa, so I'm not really watching it.
Maybe I can get a solid night's sleep tonight!

Cool, that's an interesting community along the Colorado River seemingly lots of retirees.
Their used to be a great popular joint called The Roadrunner along the Parker Strip, a floating pier bar and grill often with live music and popular with bikers -- but last time we were there it was closed and had been sold to some dude who was going to do something different with it.
We live 3 or 4 hours to the west in Prescott. If we could clean up the rigged elections, Arizona would be solid red as it should. Good luck!

I like that it's relatively close to Vegas, Laughlin, and is very exurban. Also for the first time in decades, I think Parker is growing a tiny bit. Recent pics I see of Parker don't reflect what I used to think, which is that it was tiny and dusty.
Meanwhile, here in CA? Things are still as crazy as ever. Besides crime/pot being legal and homelessness being the state's new pastime, the LA sprawl now goes all the way to Banning.

For astronomical purposes, the year 0 is 1BC. This maintains the leap year is number of 4.
A rub is Gregorian vs Julian. It took several centuries before it was universally adopted by all serious countries (looking at you Britain, 1752). So the standard is to use Julian before the official Gregorian start date of Oct 15, 1582. 10 days thus don't exist.
So, going back in time it's Julian before then, and extended proleptically extended to time immemorial. A year N BC, is 1 - N in this system.

With faster ships and longer range, a Maneuvering Board helps you avoid collisions even without fancy iron-lung computer assistance.
Maneuvering Board is graph paper in a Polar Coordinate plot. You are in the center.
At a known time, take a bearing and range to a contact outside the ship. No radar needed if you have a stadimeter and tables on mast heights. Radar is more exact.
3 minutes later take another bearing and range. Connect the dots. This is the other ship's movement vector. Using a parallel ruler and dividers, you can tell how close the ship will get to you. You can plot intercept courses, courses to get astern of him and more.

Using a proleptic Gregorian calendar back indefinitely in time would have advantages of good seasonal alignment all the way back over recorded human history (10,000 year range), but all those date between 1AD and 1582, very important historical dates would get all messed up.
So they chose to just use Julian back in time. Now, that was invented before about 44BC or whenever it was, but the mishmash of calendar systems used before then would be so arcane as to be useless. So, it's proleptic Julian all the way back through recorded history.

We have new temporary neighbors (in their '80s) who've bought a run-down house and property and are going to remodel it (almost like a hobby) -- after which they plan to flip it for a profit.
Anywho, we met the wife walking a beautiful older poodle, and she said they're going to build a dog show course on the property for the poodle, being now retired former participants in dog shows -- and just to keep the poodle able to continue doing what it was trained to do.

The Andrea Doria was in a gentle port turn, rather than the prescribed starboard turn. They kinda cut across the Stockholm's bow. The fog was very thick.
The Stockholm had them on radar, and maneuvering board. But the Stockholm's helmsman was erratic. He took the attention of the Mate away from the radar. They turned right, and went into the starboard side of Andrea Doria.
Bottom line, it was avoidable.

I read a pretty good piece on the possible year of Christ's birth. I'm going to try to find, but while there are several possibilities, the author concluded that 4BC was the most likely. IIRC.
That based on various astronomical events that could be interpreted as the Star of Bethlehem. There are several candidates. And I believe the month was likely April, IIRC.

The second season rearrangement of the theme featured the bongos. The first year was more brassy. I had in mind the visual of Robert Vaughn's Solo standing behind the bullet-pocked glass, and the camera zooms in on him as he aims his gun right at you, the viewer. (Sam Rolfe had Paladin do something similar in the intro to each episode of Have Gun -- Will Travel. Not strange, as he basically created both shows.)

It was much more serious and realistic in its approach than a lot of the spy shows. Not dazzling Mission-type plots, but the spies and antagonists Kelly & Scotty met were much more average, (evil) rather than EVIL. And of course there was the location photography. Culp & Cosby acted on sets in LA, but when a show takes place in Hong Kong, the production team had gone there and photographed the locations.

Sorry, I was misremembering. The year was 2BC, not 4BC. There was a spectacular conjunction of Venus and Jupiter that year, the closest one since, I think, where they would've appeared as a single point of light to the naked eye.
One problem is the date of Herod's death, which was taken to be 4BC. But there is some controversy over that, and it could've been as late as 1BC.
There were some other notable conjunctions in 7BC and 6BC which figure into the earlier datings.

It's the affiliates who do the actual broadcasting over the public airwaves, and they are the ones who would be fined. This gives them sort of an ultimate veto, because it is legally them on the line, not the network.
Now, they do have contractual obligations, but that can be overridden if a local station thinks something would be indecent, or against the public interest, or whatever.
They might get sued for it, and some judge decide if the decision was correct or something, I don't know.

Uh, one was The Mary Tyler Moore Show and the other was Carol Burnett's classic variety show. The local station only did this to them in their first year. When the series were clearly hits, Channel 4 aired them as the network set them to be.

KENS in San Antonio was owned (probably still to this day) by Belo. In 2002, when 60 Minutes aired a piece on "Dr." Kevorkian, the CBS affiliates that Belo owned pulled the segment. To include KENS in San Antonio.
