Senate Invokes "Nuclear Option" to Confirm 48 Trump Nominees Long Delayed By Insurrectionist Democrats

You get what you deserve.

Late last week, Senate Republicans invoked the "nuclear option" to push through President Trump's nominees, after Senate Democrats dragged their feet on votes. In discussions prior to this, Senate Majority Leader John Thune noted, "It's time to take steps to restore Senate precedent and codify in Senate rules what once was understood to be standard practice -- and that is the Senate acting expeditiously on presidential nominations to allow a president to get his team into place."

Democrats complained, of course, with Chuck Schumer using this as an opportunity to claim Republicans stole a Supreme Court seat.

Today, the Senate voted under those new rules to confirm a group of 48 nominees in one fell swoop.

Here's more:

The U.S. Senate voted Thursday to approve dozens of nominees, acting on a rule change GOP leadership made last week that allows the chamber to confirm some of the president's appointees in large batches instead of one at a time.

The 51-47 vote followed weeks of debate over whether senators could work out a deal on groups of nominees, with Democrats warning along the way that any changes to Senate procedures that benefit the Trump administration now will likely aid a future Democratic president.

"What Republicans have done is chip away at the Senate even more to give Donald Trump more power and to rubber-stamp whomever he wants, whenever he wants them, no questions asked," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said last week after Republicans initiated the rule change.

Oh -- so you do understand that once a precedent is established, it both binds and empowers both parties.

I thought you didn't understand this because you're still crying that Carr "jawboned" ABC just like Biden jawboned the media and banks.

Meanwhile, Schumer has promised the Democrat base that he will block any new spending bill and shut down the government to force the GOP to do what he wants.

Gee I remember when Ted Cruz suggested using that power as leverage against the Democrats, and Schumer said that was the worst betrayal of our precious democracy ever.

But Democrats are fearful of a shutdown -- because they know, in the end, they'll just surrender, and Schumer's tough talk will end up hurting the party.

Congressional Democrats are understandably unhappy with what happened last time they faced a government-shutdown crisis. In March, Republicans forced them into a trap where they either had to vote for another GOP-sponsored stopgap-spending measure, which offered Democrats zero concessions, or obstruct it and trigger a shutdown, punishing the government employees who were already being besieged by Elon Musk's DOGE and other Trump administration attacks. In the House, where Democrats had no power at all, it was an easy choice: They all voted against the GOP measure. But in the Senate, where a filibuster could have very definitely stopped the bill, Democratic leader Chuck Schumer did a lot of saber-rattling but then caved, rounding up enough votes to end the filibuster and ensure the government stayed open.

Democratic activists were infuriated, and House Democrats suggested Senate Democrats were gutless. The whole episode accomplished nothing other than underlining Democratic Party fecklessness, the lack of unified party leadership, and the whip hand held by the bully Donald Trump and his subalterns in Congress.

Now they're back to a near-identical point as the spending authority approved in March runs out on September 30. Republicans are again offering an extension of current spending levels -- this one a short-term measure until November 20 -- with zero concessions to the Democrats whose votes are necessary to keep the government open.

...

In recognition of their leverage, Democrats began talking weeks ago about conditions that needed to be met to earn their votes to head off a shutdown. Some wanted the Trump administration to rein in budget director Russell Vought's highly provocative and probably unconstitutional spending clawbacks; why agree to spending levels if the people running the country felt free to ignore them? Others were interested in getting a grip on Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s ravaging of U.S. science, medicine, and public-health infrastructure. But the main focus among Democrats was the issue they've long considered their strongest heading toward the 2026 midterms: the damage being done to Americans' access to health insurance. That meant demanding at a minimum the continuation of Obamacare premium subsidies due to expire at the end of the year, which were omitted from Trump's megabill because of their cost and the hatred of many Republicans of the president's signature policy accomplishment.

"You'll get nothing and like it." -- Smails, J.

I hope they do shut down the government. For one thing, it establishes this as a legitimate point of leverage, something GOPers can use later. When the Democrats cry, we'll just point out they did it.

Precedent. What a concept.

But the other thing is... when there's a shutdown, and the government has no funds, doesn't the president gain the incredible power to decide what spending is absolutely necessary and which can be suspended? Who will be kept on the payroll and who will be furloughed -- this time, without pay?

I think that is how it works.

That's a Briar Patch Trump definitely doesn't want to be thrown into.

When are they going to man up and kick this superannuated pansy out of leadership?

Next cut off all new student loans, since the government funds them as well. Lay off everyone except political appointees at the EPA and Dept of Ed, and any other agency that is overly infested with Dems. That's just a start.

But in reality, when normal people hear that the government might be shut down, they jump for joy and piss their pants in excitement.

There are fewer bigger disconnections between what the roaches in Congress think versus what normal Americans think than government shutdowns.

Trump never complained about it publicly. That's a key point.

Even in Trump 1.0, Democrats allowed for unanimous consent on many lower offices requiring presidential nomination. They have allowed 0 since January.

So, Trump and Thune played nice for 8 months to make sure that Collins and Murkowski and McConnell would vote for a rules change by clearly establishing that it was Democrats who weren't respecting the rules and precedent of the hallowed Senate.

They think that way because to them, donors get upset that their rent payments on Congress critters ain't getting no return.

Shutdowns occurred all the time in the 70's and yet no one blinked an eye. Like most things, it is a media op designed to cram in unwarranted spending and/taxes under the cover of 'emergency' due to a shutdown. Dems in 1990 used it to impale GHWB during the Gulf War with such. And GHWB like the whiny bitch he was, took it like a furry troon.

So I'll go with a lighter note.

Did ... did ... did you just perpetuate the hateful and disproven theory of a sexual binary while simultaneously assuming Donna's gender just because it is a name typically socially constructed as "female" and the Donna's previous use of feminine pronouns? On so little evidence, you dare categorize a fellow poster - neigh, a fellow *human* - into the depraved and fictional binary without the poster's consent?

Please apologize to Donna - and to us - immediately.

*Likes to reference long ago, i.e., 1995-1996, 2013, 2018-2019
--
AI does it better:
During a U.S. government shutdown, essential services that protect the safety of human life and property continue to operate, along with "mandatory spending" programs that do not rely on annual congressional appropriations.

Services & programs that continue -
Mandatory spending: These are programs funded outside of the annual appropriations process and continue largely uninterrupted. This includes: Social Security and Medicare benefit payments, Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
Essential services: Federal employees designated as "essential" or "excepted" remain on the job. The types of activities that fall under this umbrella include: Border Patrol and law enforcement; Air traffic control; Military operations and active-duty personnel; In-hospital medical care for veterans; Federal law enforcement and criminal investigations; Power grid maintenance
Other: The USPS; The Federal Reserve; IRS services; Agencies with multi-year funding

It'll be fine.

Saying that the regulation disallowing the promulgation of knowingly false material about a crime doesn't apply to Kimmel. Like, it's so obvious man. Especially since he's just a funny man, and it hasn't, like, been enforced in forever, and stuff.

So, fine. Assume it's all true. The application of the regulation against Kimmel has no teeth since it obviously doesn't apply.

Which means that Carr's "threat" against ABC and its affiliates has no teeth. Which means ABC and Disney are abject cowards who won't stand up for principle against a specious charge that hasn't even been levied by the government yet.

216 G00GLE AI:

AI Overview
When a person uses threats and direct, illegal action to force acceptance of unpopular political changes, several words can describe them, depending on the specific context and the type of actions taken.

Words describing the actor

_Terrorist: This term is used for someone who uses violence against non-combatants to achieve political aims. It originates from the French Revolution's "Reign of Terror," where the state used violence to enforce acceptance of its ideology.

_Tyrant: A ruler who exercises oppressive and cruel authority over their people, often through the use of force and intimidation.

_Dictator: A ruler with total power over a country, typically one who has obtained control by force.

_Autocrat: A ruler with absolute, unlimited power, who governs without the consent or input of the people.

_Authoritarian: An individual who enforces strict obedience to authority, especially at the expense of personal freedom, and suppresses dissent through coercive tactics.

_Despot: A cruel and oppressive ruler, similar to a tyrant.

Any lesser man would have been destroyed by what they had coming. And what's more he would have lost the bigger war - with half his base genuinely "just asking questions" and the other half genuinely wanting to kill them and shut them up. This was an Intelligence operation like we have no doubt ran many times before in other countries.

Epstein was Russia II. And Trump flicked it away like it was nothing. And risked looking like a rudderless coward to the people who potentially loved him most in the process, trusting that his larger vision will carry everybody that matters, and more.

Gov employees and military are funded with annual personnel budgets. However, there are some employees that are funded through other means, such as oversight for contracts, and are fully funded on the front end.

It also gives certainty to employees they'll be paid, and stops the "overwhelming the DC unemployment office every 4 years" issue. It's *amazing*, actually. At my last company, we got acquired and when we switched to the new company's system, we had a short paycheck since it meant moving from paid-current to paid-arrears. 9 days short, I think. It gets made up at the other end in your last paycheck, but still, a weekish short at the transition point.

I had a staggering number of colleagues complaining about it because they were going to struggle to make the mortgage that month, or some other predictable, routine, very large bill like a car payment or somesuch.

I don't know what they were making, but I know *around* what they were making, because I knew what I made. It was firmly in "you have no excuse to not have reserves and live hand-to-mouth" territory. 331 AOC is what happens when most people do not turn out to vote. She got elected from a rotten borough by hard Dem primary votes. That is how she beat Crowley(from memory) to take the seat.

this is the case in most of the deep blue cities in the USA

Philadelphia major elections (mayor, D.A., etc) traditionally have low turnout. Last mayoral election turnout was high, all the way up to a whopping 31%

People in the cities have very low expectations of their elected officials. If you want to get anything done, you make use of the patronage system. (that's for the longtimers.)
the new people, such as the gentrifiers are mainly a woke mob who set up their own little political ecosystems so they can control and terrorize their own little slice of urban yuppie/hipster heaven.

342 An attempted RIF would probably require a court case b/c emergency shutdowns (aka caused by Congress) are excluded from triggering a RIF, even if the shutdown goes more than 30 days.

It's more likely a shutdown would be a grant remover vs a people remover (although again, folks contracted into government could also be on the chopping block b/c that also does not take a RIF)...

Absolutely true. The old city machines were maligned but people at the bottom end had some responsiveness from City Hall in return for their votes. Nowadays, it is all about faked elections and monied interests (mainly developers nowadays) calling the tune. And Nat Dems use the rotten borough urban areas to control the surrounding rural and suburban areas around urban fraud bases for grift and power.

I think DC is convinced that Obama's tactics during the 2013 (?) shutdown were some kind of great success. That it convinced the people that shutdowns were devastating because the National Park Service took time, money, and material to block people off from open spaces owned by the Federal government.

412 chacos are more comfortable than birks and sufficiently hipster douchey.

I bought a pair over 30 years ago as camp shoes and chaco refurbished them completely a few years ago for zero cost. They cost a bajallion dollars at the time but I've been very satisfied. Wear them all the time. It has the toe loop so wearing socks with them isn't even possible.

413 358 You might be very surprised how many people with outward wealth -- exotic cars, fancy houses, etc -- are very deep in debt and living way beyond their means
Posted by: Elric The Blade at September 19, 2025 01:03 PM (iFTx/)

This kind of reminds me of my grandparents. They were never in debt, but they spent a few years living relatively lavishly, and then pulled _way_ back and started living like normal people again around the time I was about 6 years old.

I guess that was probably how they planned it, though. Enjoy the first few years of their retirement, then settle in to the grandma and grandpa role.

Read the list up top which link I provided goes directly to the US Senate list of confirmees this Sept 18th. Plenty of adminstrators and relatively few ambassadors. Includes some DA posts.

417 Ambassadors have real jobs. I know you don’t think we should even have a State Department and all, but some of us do live in the real world.
Posted by: Cow Demon at September 19, 2025 01:13 PM (MrWte)

Now, I never said we shouldn't have a State Department, but I suppose I would reluctantly agree there should be SOMEBODY talking to all those dirty swarthy foreigners.

Unfortunately our State Department has long been the realm of traitors and sodomizers, so yeah, I'd put that on the list of things we should blow up and start over.

Posted by: BurtTC at September 19, 2025 01:16 PM (/AIA+)

I would say that is fair in a large part of the US. Chamber of Commerce and fatcat donors call the shots in a lot of GOP organized states--that is why you get squishes in ruby red states.
Posted by: whig at September 19, 2025 01:08 PM (WDjG6

Or, in TX, you have taxpayer funded lobbying which does the same.

419 “Now, I never said we shouldn't have a State Department, but I suppose I would reluctantly agree there should be SOMEBODY talking to all those dirty swarthy foreigners.” - Well, that’s progress, I suppose. But clearly you don’t think ambassadors have real jobs. Some of those 48 being confirmed are ambassadors.

“Unfortunately our State Department has long been the realm of traitors and sodomizers, so yeah, I'd put that on the list of things we should blow up and start over.” - I wouldn’t mind that at all, and staffing it with people with more hard nosed viewpoints of foreign policy rather than pie in the sky dreamers. Foreign policy is….forget it.

420 I hope the government gets shut down with Chuck Schumer leading the parade.

I am so sick of these jackasses in Congress, on both sides at times. Who, on our dime, take forever to get anything done. Form committees to discuss longer and even more boring. Waste more time. Scream at each other in "hearings" for anyone in a 10mi radius to "hear." And just generally annoy me.

I am in no mood to be annoyed at present.

I want it put to a vote for the country for two terms.

Once I get this done I want it put to a vote for the country for Congress to be part time and have pay cuts.

It is the same shite for decades. Over and over.

The only way I would cross the damn aisle would be to slap a Democrat.

If I run for office the above will be my bumper sticker.

423 Democrats - "oh it is terrible that trump is cutting spending and all these people are losing their jobs."

Aso Democrats "We are going to force Trump to agree with us by shutting down the government, giving him power to cut spending and eliminate jobs."

424 If 47 Senate Democrats still voted against the Presidential Advisor deal, then what the heck was the point of negotiating with them. What Schumer's Senate Democrats have done so far, is ban the President from obtaining his advisors, as is laid out in the US Constitution.
The result of this, is unrestrained violence and chaos. The argument can be made that Sen. Schumer directly enabled and incited the assassination of Charlie Kirk. the Senate Democrats seem to have taken the lead in inciting rebellion and assassinations.
