Remember this modern day version of the selling of indulgences?

Carbon credits have little to no effect on making companies greener, study reveals

Many companies across the world use carbon credits as part of their climate strategies to offset emissions. A carbon credit is a certificate that represents the reduction, avoidance or removal of one ton of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. While organizations claim these credits help them reduce their environmental impact, there is debate about whether companies that buy credits decarbonize faster. However, an in-depth study of 89 multinationals, published in Nature Communications, reveals that companies that purchase credits do not decarbonize any quicker than those that do not.

To borrow a line from Ace - I shan't believe it. I shannot!

Chimps Preparing for a MoMe?

H/T: Mister Ghost in comments early today

In the wild, chimpanzees likely ingest the equivalent of several alcoholic drinks every day

doof-in-the-wild-chimpanzee-1.jpg

The first-ever measurements of the ethanol content of fruits available to chimpanzees in their native African habitat show that the animals could easily consume the equivalent of more than two standard alcoholic drinks each day, according to researchers at the University of California, Berkeley.

It's not clear whether they actively seek out fruit with high ethanol levels, which are typically riper fruit with more sugars to ferment. But the availability of ethanol in many species of fruit that they normally eat suggests that alcohol is a regular part of their diet and likely was a part of the diets of our human ancestors.

Article is from the same site as that carbon credits article above. Typical lefty "science". They can't help but throw in a definitive line about evolution ("our human ancestors"). Whatever. Let the chimps get their drink on!

Of course.

Now what do you say about someone who fundamentally supports that system and acts as containment for an authentic right-wing (I’m not even going to say “conservative”, because what are we conserving at this point?) alternative?

36 Good evening good Patriots!!

Perhaps you all read this earlier - dunno, I've been traveling all day.

The Democrat Party Booth at the Ashland County, Ohio Fair was kicked out today after displaying buttons with “8647” and “is he dead yet” in reference to killing President Trump.

They just can’t help themselves. They constantly promote violence.

When I first heard this, I was hoping it was fake news. But no. Ashland County Fair's FB post confirms:

"The Ashland County Fair Board would like to let you know this afternoon we were made aware of offensive buttons in the Democrat booth. We are a family friendly fair and do not condone this from any vendor/merchant. We apologize for those who saw the display. The democrat party has been asked to pack their booth up for this year so they will not be here the remaining of our Fair week. This is not political, we just can't have this at our County Fair!"

Posted by: gKWVE at September 18, 2025 10:15 PM (gKWVE)

I’ve always said: the left accepts “evolution” only as a means of denying God’s existence, while rejecting its implications, like that human population groups separated by geography and climate might undergo different selection pressures for traits like intelligence and civility.

Many on the right reject evolution, for what I think are incorrect apprehensions about what it means for God’s creation, while accepting its implications vis-a-vis the heritability of pro-social and antisocial traits.

I got divorced when both me and the Ex were active Navy with very high Security Clearances... and as it was ugly, I KNEW she was going to try to F me... so... I got an appointment to see a Navy Lawyer to discuss it... but that day he was out sick. As my ship was heading out in a couple days for a week or so... I asked if there was anyone else I could talk to?

Well.... there was a guy in the Office who was doing his Reserve Duty two weeks for the year... whose Golf game had gotten rained out so came into the office.

I was fighting for custody of my twins... and the guy took real interest in my case... turned out he was a Father's Rights guy.

Helped me get through the whole thing over the next few months, even had his Legal Aide essentially write the Separation Agreement... never asked for a dime.

These smokes proudly display the outstanding artisanship found on every Fernandez creation. Made exclusively for JR Cigar, Witchdoktor comes box-pressed, and fashioned with a well-aged core of Nicaraguan long-fillers snuggled beneath a smooth and oily Ecuador Oscuro wrapper. Upon lighting, you will experience savory medium to full-bodied notes of licorice, espresso, dark chocolate, leather, and various spices. For the ultimate in smoking satisfaction, these superb maduro’s also burn incredibly slow, and fill the room with a sweet warm tobacco aroma.

249 The funny thing about that Crockett quote is that she is actually close to saying something true, but will probably avoid the implications due to leftist blinders. To whit, there is a difference between people who commit one crime in unusual circumstances vs. people who make crime a lifestyle. My guess is she is heading toward a mott-and-baylie where she equivocates to claim any specific person is in the first group while effectively ignoring the second group. This is the big problem with the decarceration program, we get a sob story about one guy who smoked pot and got huge jail time, but then the criminals who mostly get released are the ones who do lots of crimes and then escalate to killing random people on trains. Most crime is committed by a small fraction of criminals.

Probably yes, the fractional portion of a bitcoin is called a satoshi, and IIRC the smallest one used is .0000001 Bitcoin.
However the cost of processing the transaction has gone up due to volume updating the shared ledger.

Currently it is faster and cheaper to use Tether stablecoin, or lightning network, both of which are using crypto backed by actual assets or bitcoin. I have heard that in Peru you can use Tether USD stablecoin to pay for stuff in the street markets, and El Salvador has the Chivo wallet using bitcoin.

The theory of money is an odd thing, not what we expect

368 To be money a thing must be durable, divisible, fungible, portable, limited supply, uniform in size or quality, and accepted widely.
Not all things used as money have all these elements, and the fewer elements your currency has, the closer it is to a commodity that is used in barter.
There is another element that is "cost of use"
A check cashing fee is about a dime, an ATM fee is added for transferring money, ACH and credit payments have other charges of about 3-4%, and even gold and silver have a cost for transporting to settle accounts, or storage fees to prevent theft.
Bitcoin has most of these elements, but not all of them. Then again Dollars don't either, nor does lumps of crudely smelted copper, or salt, but each were used widely as a form of currency at one time.

The one thing Bitcoin does do is to reduce the need for banks to act as intermediaries between purchasers and sellers so they can go back to making loans and setting up savings accounts.

Our only hope is is the current administration takes pity on our county to stick its thumb in the eye of the governor for whomever they have no love. Its been fun getting political involved though! From what I understand he made a bad joke/snark when they were discussing the homeless issue and crime. Nothing similar in the least to the Kimmel monologue.
Posted by: The way I see it at September 19, 2025 12:10 AM (EYmYM)

One could be generous and say he was trying to refer to the violent maniacs who stab strangers, but the context made it sound like he was talking about ALL homeless crazies.

He certainly wasn't joking. I think they were about to go to break, so if this was, say a story about sportsball, and someone had said how the team was a failure, he might have just said "get rid of everyone, and start over next year." A throwaway line. Only this time he used the phrase "lethal injection."

Tether issues BTC, gold, USD and other currency stablecoins, they certify to their trading partners that they have the assets to cover the stablecoin. Greyscale is one of the ETF investment companies and they take your money, they buy stablecoin or bitcoin, the value of the ETF is based on the market price just like they bought gold or Uranium.

404 Its an interesting story why the guitar got that name. He was playing at some venue that was heated by a burning barrel somewhere in the place and 2 dudes fighting over a chick named Lucille knocked it over and started a fire that burned the place. I guess people evacuated but BB king realized his guitar was inside so he ran into the burning building to get it. When he found out how the fire started over a chick Lucille he named every one of his guitars after Lucille to remind him not to ever be stupid enough to run into a burning building.
Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division

Heard similar... Except his favorite guitar was already named "Lucille", burning bar, rushed in to save Lucille, barely got out alive. Said Ef That... for a guitar?!
Thereafter there were many Lucille's, usually the same model though.

No clue on that one. I think if anybody destroys anything on stage these days its some cheap piece of shit bought specifically to be destroyed on stage. Gotta say though, I never met a metal guitar player that ever named their guitar. I guess we thought it was kinda homo, lol. I go by the color, the red V, the black V, or the actual model if there is only 1 of them. If there are more than one I go by the color. Nobody I knew had any type of answering machine until at least the early 1980s. I remember the first home machine I had had a tiny mini-cassette. That was mid-late '80s?

Also tech is expensive. First microwave in '85 was $500.

Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at September 19, 2025 12:13 AM (/lPRQ)

Less than taking your pants pockets to Baltimore to buy a trainload of coal and then to Indonesia to receive your payment for delivery at the port of Jakarta. And oddly the cost in using stablecoin or bitcoin is less than using a bank to do an international transfer that takes three days to settle.
Chip companies that fab chips overseas use bitcoin because of the lag in payment settlement - time they could be getting the interest or use of the millions they transfer in a day. Overseas banking can take three days to settle a big payment, BTC and stablecoin can do it as fast as an email.
They are not great solution for local retail but they are promising for international and large payments.
And 3% credit card processing fee gets large with large payments. Tether is about a tenth of that.

458 FML. Just got home. About a mile from the house a skunk runs out onto the road. I didn't hit him, I straddled him. But he sprayed the underside of the truck. Dang, it stinks.

460 > I always wondered if the makeup thing was a Gene Simmons control move...cause the makeup thing made the band replaceable and he owned it.

Sort of like the "house name" for books? Like the way the Hardy Boys books were all allegedly written by "Franklin W. Dixon", but in reality were written by whichever otherwise unemployed hack would bang one out fast and cheap.

The Stratemeyer Syndicate was the master of this. Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Tom Swift, the Bobbsey Twins, the Rover Boys... all owned by Stratemeyer, and all written by multiple hacks under the "house name".

I just finished watching the Netflix documentary on Charlie Sheen, who was out of his mind on drugs when he threw away his job on "Two and a Half Men."

Maybe Jimmy Kimmel has something similar going on. Hollywood, baby!

470 Some here may remember the blogger Popehat. There was a time when he was intelligent; but I just saw some posts from him on Bluesky. He’s totally lost his mind, calling for the deaths of all Trump supporters. He’s admitted being admitted to mental health institutions in the past, and he’s on a glide path back into one, or worse.

I don't like the way they are digitizing the dollar either.
However, even it there is an EMP burst vaporizing the digits. I have records of my accounts and can retrieve my money from Sam. If I have it in some Bitcoin mode where do I go?

473 I spent some time a few minutes ago messing with that little Dual car stereo that was DOA in box. No joy. I hooked up an old crystal earphone to a test probe, and went around the PCB board while a memory stick was inserted in the USB port, and "playing". Leastwise the screen showed track titles, and times. No audio at the line outs, and no audio at any point on the board that I could reach. One chip gave a rapid ticking sound, and many of the pins on the display gave a faint hum. No audio on any of the pins of the big audio amp chip. I'm guessing that somewhere on the board there is a D/A converter that isn't working. I guess I will trash the darn thing. Only cost me 29 bucks, and my time has value, too. Easier to buy another one that works.

Well, 10 out of 10 for style. lol

I have a 1991 white gibson V that I used for years. I got it when it was only a few years old. The dude I dot it from was a younger kid, and he wasn't a good player at the time, so he had the bill and ted's wyld stallions mentality. He had screwed a metal plate to the back of the guitar so he could use flash paper or some shit to light it on fire on stage without burning the finish. It obviously worked because there is no burn marks, but there are a few small screw holes leftover after he removed the plate before I got it. Kids....

Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at September 19, 2025 12:43 AM (c35xG)

depends on the Stablecoin. Tether is claiming 100% backing for its Gold coin for certain, but I am not sure how the Treasury issues bills, if they print them out like bearer bonds or just give credit on a leger like if you buy them yourself through a broker.
Stablecoins are required to have 100% backing in treasuries under the GENIUS act, whereas a bank is required to have 3% backing in assets and FDIC coverage. And remember the Fed banks buy treasuries and keep them as assets too.

If you buy gold stocks or etfs, you want to check to see if the company holds all that gold in actual metal or if they are just buying futures. It is cheaper to "rent" gold that is sitting in someone's vault. Sometimes the gold is "rented" by a chain of companies who are renting it from each other and then raising funds based on that ownership. It is not exactly selling the same thing to two different investors, but it is finance.
