Wednesday Morning Rant

mannixape2.jpg

Reach

I have been astounded by the reaction to the assassination of Charlie Kirk. I knew who he was and what he did. I am not in Kirk's target audience (I am about a decade too old), but I am on his side of the political divide and I was, of course, aware of him. Had someone stopped me and asked, "who is Charlie Kirk," my answer probably would have been, "he's a popular conservative pundit who goes to college campuses to debate people and runs Turning Point USA." I liked what he was doing, watched some of his videos and was familiar with his work, but I never followed him all that closely.

The response to his assassination continues to blow me away. It is evidence that I have been hugely out of touch. I expected some reaction, to be sure. Plenty of rage. Many demands for severe punishment. Calls for investigation into wider networks. Lament over the loss of a highly effective and ambitious conservative voice. That kind of thing. What I would never have predicted, had someone come to me with a hypothetical of, "what would happen if Charlie Kirk got assassinated," is what has actually happened. In part, I had no clue how popular he was outside of the United States.

The global aspect of the response came entirely out of left field for me. Protesters in Korea called him out during their demonstration. Tommy Robinson dedicated part of his UK protest to Kirk. In Australia, anti-corruption protesters included a moment of silence for Charlie Kirk. There have been vigils, placards, etc. in honor of Charlie Kirk at US embassies in at least Spain, Italy and Germany. I've seen reports of memorials or vigils in Japan, South Africa, New Zealand and others.

Politicians the world over have chimed in, too - and the list will sadly surprise nobody. Milei (Argentina), Meloni (Italy), Orban (Hungary) and even Nawrocki (Poland) all made statements condemning the murder and praising Kirk. On the other side, the EU Parliament thought it important enough to follow the Democrats' lead and disrupt a moment of silence for Kirk when called for in their chamber. Personally, I have received a couple of texts from acquaintances in foreign countries about the assassination and the reactions to it where they live. He was an American, discussing American issues but nonetheless apparently had a truly global influence and effect. It seems that to the degree our issues are common throughout the civilized world, so to was his popularity.

Then, of course, has been the street-level response. The firing/punishment campaign against social media leftists has been astonishing in its speed, breadth and depth. I have never once in my life seen a leftist punished for being vicious or awful, but I sure have this week. Even more casually, half the conversations I've overheard in public this past week have been about Kirk, in one way or another. Just as interesting, I know a few people who never find a lefty cause unworthy of vocal support who have been oddly quiet. People who are never quiet about anything are not shouting for the first time.

I always viewed Kirk as an important and popular conservative activist. I had absolutely no idea how wide his reach was. Perhaps as a result of not being in his target audience, I was not aware of just how popular Kirk was to the younger crowd. His target audience - those in the heart of darkness that is the American university complex - dared to have memorials for him on campuses across multiple countries.

His reach was broader than I ever imagined.

At approximately 2:40 am EST, the suspect rammed his car into the gate of the FBI's Pittsburgh Field Office in the city's South Side Neighborhood. The high-speed collision failed to breach the gate. The driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot after throwing an American flag over the fence.

Martyrs don't kill movements. They make them grow much faster than before.

Some names will be cowed, but others, many more, will rise up to take the mantle.

And the narrative is too easy to explain: the left hates MAGA and tries to kill its leaders. It's a priori just looking at the situation, making the left's efforts to narrative their way out of it meaningless.

The pastor’s morning sermon on Sunday acknowledged Charlie’s place with God in Heaven, but spent more time on Iryna’s murder. People of faith are hurt, angry, and grieving.

My personal guess is that Dolley is trying to process too many different social networks of friends--in person, at work, social media friendz/contacts, linked in, etc. Basically communications overload with no way to have common denominators to resolve conflicts.

And social media algorithms are there to push out more and more anxiety provoking content to people because it pokes at the subliminal lizard brain, not the conscious one. And scare and shame used on social media (and media in general such as local news casts) are toxic long term corrosives on a person's well being by attacking that lizard brain female need for belonging and socializes. Makes every action seem problematic.

Given what you say about what she does in the past, I would also imagine that her antenna are much more sensitive to threats than others would be and social media is literally overloading her with potential threats of all sorts beyond her professional worries.

86 A couple of observations, with a week's space here.

1. My lesson of the last 15 years, and perhaps one that should have been learned 50-60 years prior as well... you need to draw a hard line with your kids before they are adults. I am a parent, I understand, but if they turn commie (or islamist, for that matter), you need to cut them loose, and they need to KNOW this, and know WHY. No support. No money. Get the fuck out until you unfuck yourself. Looking at what's been reported of how this shooter's family interacted with him, especially the mother - tired of seeing little dipshits commit leftist violence or generic psychotic stuff being enabled by squish parents. And you MUST know what your kid is up to; this twerp clearly started veering left as a minor, it's plain as day.

2. It's clear we're not done with the crescendo of outrage yet, we have many more levels to dial it up. You know how I know? No run on arms yet. I know these newly-appalled moderates and centrists aren't armed to the rafters (as we are); if they're not fixing that, it's because they're still in shock. Further incidents or the progs doubling down more may speed up their awakening.

Pope Leo XIV told the new U.S. ambassador to the Holy See, Brian Burch, that he is praying for conservative activist Charlie Kirk, as well as his wife and children, following his murder last week in Utah, the Vatican said on Tuesday.

Leo also expressed concern about political violence and addressed the need "to refrain from rhetoric and exploitation that lead to polarization rather than dialogue," Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said in a statement, according to Vatican News.

The pope's remarks came on Saturday, when he received the ambassador in an audience to receive his credentials, marking the first meeting between the two.

My wife, on the other hand, followed him on all social media platforms and was a fan of him and his work.

My daughter knew who he was, but said she disagreed with him a lot. I'm guessing she's never heard him speak and was getting the left's rendition of who he was and what he said.

Her college, however, has fired one educator and expelled a black student who chose a Kirk vigil to make fun of him being shot in the throat.

Abbott has said they're reviewing and may be cancelling the teaching certificates of over 100 teachers in the state of Texas for their actions.

A variation of "your failure to worship trannies causes them to suicide so your speech must be stopped."
But with murder justified.

119 I am also astonished, and trying to understand the reaction. Charlie Kirk, to my mind, was a crusading free speech advocate and, because I loosely follow free speech issues in universities, I always thought of him mostly in that way. Of course, he was also a tremendous political organizer who personally delivered young voters by the ton to Trump in the last election. That made me like him, not knowing anything else about him.

But I had no idea how he lived his life and the faith he so frequently professed. I had no idea he influenced young people not just to have civil conversations about difficult issues, but he also worked to bring them closer to God. And not just Christians. One of the first essays I read was by an Orthodox Jew, a student, who said Kirk heavily influenced his return to actively following Jewish laws and traditions, explicitly advising the young man "it is important!" for him to celebrate his religion.

Patton said as much about the Germans in the Battle of the Bulge in an early SHAEF meeting in Versailles. Something like "Brad (Omar Bradley), the Krauts have stuck their head into a meatgrinder and I've got ahold of the handle." That is when he sprung the three divisions in 72 hours plan on SHAEF that he had already planned out with his staff prior to the meeting. He made it so simply that a very brief comm to his hq would put it into action without him even being there to do it personally.

Patton was a commensurate warrior and military professional soldier.

130 Oh, jey, that ABC reporter issued (a pre-written) apology. "''Yesterday I tried to underscore the jarring contrast between this cold blooded assassination of Charlie Kirk - a man who dedicated his life to public dialogue - and the personal, disturbing texts read aloud by the Utah County Attorney at the press conference. I deeply regret that my words did not make that clear.

'But let there be zero doubt here: I unequivocally condemn this horrific crime and the pain it caused Charlie Kirk's family, those who were forced to witness it at UVU, and the millions of people he inspired,'"

131 But I had no idea how he lived his life and the faith he so frequently professed.

132 Neville Singham is the guy funding all the worst of the worst extremist and radial Pali protesters.
He's basically living in exile in Hong Kong, protected by China, because of how openly he's been funding terrorism.

I'm really hoping Trump has already quietly signed the declaration that Kirk's murder wasn't just domestic terrorism but international terrorism.

Neville Singh also funded the great majority of BLM riots in 2020. And even though everyone knows, it's impossible to find almost anyone reporting that he got all of his money to do it from the CCP, who he has always been a front for.
And he funds Code Pink, which his wife co-founded.
From what I've read he splits time between Hong Kong and Shanghai, but it's clear that he is under the personal protection of Chairman Xi, so he's untouchable.

You identify something that a lot of us are feeling - that the mainline churches became far too comfortable with the culture, and thus fell prey to the same disease that has consumed our culture.
But while those instititions are ending, there is a huge demand and need out here for something new to arise, some new form and structure for believers to connect. I don't know what it will be yet, or what form it will take - but I know personally of hundreds of people like me - and possibly you - that are ready and waiting for it.

Direct quote, "On 21 December, Patton met with Bradley to review the impending advance, starting the meeting by remarking, "Brad, this time the Kraut's stuck his head in the meat grinder, and I've got hold of the handle."

The comment of Patton of letting them go all the way to Paris was in the movie but I think it was actually made in conference with his staff. Because he added to letting them go all the way to Paris to roll them up, IIRC, "that is not the way the gentlemen up there think about war." or some such.

Totally my opinion,
Small is better and the ancient church met in homes and small meeting areas. The problem with institutionalized big churches is they have mission spread which then requires endless funding pitches to the members to fund, volunteer, etc. that have nothing to do with the Great Commission.

That attenuates whatever messages they put out because you end up in an endless fund raising cycle which dispirits the preachers (or worse encourages it), the move to lowest common denominator Christianity in order to maximize church funding for projects. Sort of like if you build it they will come. End result, is you have dying main line congregations meeting in tiny numbers in huge buildings where there are no new families with babies to regenerate the institution.

Some churches, namely the Roman Catholic church, have substantial reserves and a long existing and difficult to change permanently doctrines. Thus, more resistant than something like Church of England, etc. I would put Orthodox in the same boat as far as ancient doctrine but much less well funded in the US and formerly were more tied to ethnicity

For them, right and wrong is all about oppressor/victim, instead of, did the individual act morally? It's the foundation of their lies and delusion.

Kirk was targeted in part because of where he did his thing, on campuses. The Academy needs a good flush, and maybe more than one. We should start by refusing student loans to any school and major with a high default rate. Eventually, we need to starve the grievance studies departments down to unsubsidized levels. If they have any merit, then good for them, but without the Gov backing the loans, I think they shrivel fast. That's a major source of the rot.

Classic Aristotle, the best rhetoric has truthful relations with the facts and is the most hurtful to those that speak and breath pure rhetoric.

You can only have dialectical conversations with those willing to be persuaded by facts and logic.

By the time I retired from academia, almost all the emphasis was on rhetoric and those trying to use dialectic with any nuance were blackballed, fired, and sidelined. But his language about (the equivalent of) wanting to go back and get the gun as well as his words about etching the language into the bullet casings may very well be attempts to ERASE involvement by anyone ELSE who did the etching or who was provided the gun or who was supposed to pick it up but didn't. The whole text exchange reads like language from a school play written by someone in high school (which matches their development stage).

At some point in the last 20 years our culture started equating rage with passion. More rage = you care MORE than others. If you don't rage then you obviously don't care (silence=violence). Example: "Good and Mad" by Rebecca Traister, "Eloquent Anger" by Brittney Cooper, and "Rage Becomes Her" by Soraya Chemaly (and these are just the feminists).

275 243 Classic Aristotle, the best rhetoric has truthful relations with the facts and is the most hurtful to those that speak and breath pure rhetoric.

You can only have dialectical conversations with those willing to be persuaded by facts and logic.

By the time I retired from academia, almost all the emphasis was on rhetoric and those trying to use dialectic with any nuance were blackballed, fired, and sidelined. So we kept our mouths to ourselves and taught the older ways to new students, not engage colleagues in discussions like when I first entered it.

This is the problem with thinking that what we think in the forebrain is all there is to it. It's the swapping of thing in and out of consciousness that gives us our actual framework, and things may not be consciously visible when we can't see a hole in our "logic" that says "logic doesn't exist".

If "logic doesn't exist" then it's arguable that "exist" has no *logical* meaning. Hence existence is nothing, so why did you bring it up?

I dunno. I'm still skeptical this will last. There was a massive response after 09/11/2001 Islamic terrorist attacks as well. And that lasted a few months until everyone went back to normal again. And almost immediately the country bent over to coddle Muslims and declare anyone who criticized them as "Islamophobes".

And within 7 years, the country elected a radical Islam-supporter, Israel/USA-hater as President.

And within 20 years, cities across the country and the federal government are now infested with radical Muslims. And NYC itself is poised to elect a radical Muslim.

So I am taking a wait and see approach to find out if Americans go back to sleep again.

You might enjoy and find informative reading about the ancient churches and how those writing during a time of hot and cold persecutions, a multitude of heretics inside and outside the churches, but yet had a far firmer belief in resurrection than churches emphasize today. A belief, like Charlies, unto death. Started with Polycarp, Ignatius, and now reading Eusebius and Iraeneus on Heresies. Next up Clement and Oregen.

Their firm faith and direct contacts to people that witnessed the crucifixion and resurrection made for some hard men in the faith willing to suffer torture, persecution, and death for what they believed. Much less about 'love' and more about 'faith'.

As a sidebar, one thing I've noticed is a lot of talking heads saying the Charlie's murder feels like a "tipping point" in the same way that 9/11 did, and that the world has tectonically changed. But I'm curious, what really did change after 9/11? That is, what truths were realized and how have they lasted? In fact, post-9/11, the Muslim invasion of the West only accelerated, now to the point that they've practically captivated the politics of Europe, and transformed and trashed their culture. So, in fact, it seems we really learned nothing from 9/11.

Will Charlie's death play out similarly? Will any of our harrowing realizations last?

For our enemies, that means they have to recalculate everything they thought they knew, and they may even be starting to feel fear for the first time.

If they don't, they should.

316 As far as I know, there are at least two ways our brain processes thoughts, there are synapse firing for well-wired paths, and there is a slower chemical process which is more generally useful and adaptable.

There seems to be a state in our brain where we *know* what we have confidence in, but it is not readily available, it's more of a base for intellectual processing.

They were quite literally obeying Scripture, as found in Romans 13 - 1 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

Some people will get mad, but this is what Paul stated in Romans. How does one resist tyranny and obey the word of God - which tells you to obey the government - at the same time?

Since I taught law classes mainly and the obligatory US Gov. I taught what the Founders, Framers, and the entire Constitutional and Political History of the US in my classes using direct sources. Students have never conceived of actually reading original sources in an introductory class rather than the evil pablum served up by textbooks.

The funny thing is, the students liked not having to buy textbooks which made it easier for me to deindoctrinate them by showing them real history and make them trust original sources more than summaries.

368 Unless he meant that logic has no corporal form or force. Then, yes, that is a hard one.

I agree logic does not "exist" in that sense. Because to "exist" is to stand on one's own (out). And words only live in our heads and are mainly expressed from our mouths.

Because I believe in the Word (Logos), I came to believe in The Word of the external He Who Was and Is.

We act out the two essential concepts of God in believing that remote physical bodies are communing with us. And through Breath (Spirit) they are brought to us.

I did feel sorry for Tarlov; she was playing the usual intellectual games that someone taking the "other side" of an issue usually takes, and I don't think she had thought about it all that seriously. Posted by: XTC at September 17, 2025 12:03 PM (UnA8+)

No one does, because it is nonsense.

Everything is Concept. Every thought, every physical thing, every soul, all of them are just Concepts.

Concepts follow Rules. Concept + Something Else = New Concept. Physics, Psychology, Philosophy, everything, all follow some predictable set of Rules (and gosh, just you wait until I can publish those Rules for you all!)

Engels stole the idea from Feuerbach of shoehorning "History" itself into the Hegelian concept of Concept, and said that History follows rigid Rules too (and gosh darn it, my buddy Karl is one day gonna let you know what those rules are, and how!). History is inevitable. Revolutions are inevitable. This is Historical Materialism in a very lame, incomplete nutshell. Bullshit based on bullshit of some fairytale set of Rules that don't actually exist but hey, they totally do, we just haven't gotten around to figuring out what they are yet.

382 Some people will get mad, but this is what Paul stated in Romans. How does one resist tyranny and obey the word of God - which tells you to obey the government - at the same time?
Posted by: A serious question
=======
Easy, Paul was writing during the time of early Christianity and was deeply involved in the Great Commission. He lived in a time of tumults and Jewish rebellions. And he was more concerned about the ability to get new converts which would be destroyed if the Roman Empire took a sustained view that the Christians were rebels and deserved special treatment as enemies of the state.

It was already enough that Christians refused to bow to the fake gods of Caesar and the Roman pantheon. That warranted individual death in many cases. It would have been much worse for the spread of Christianity which saved eternal souls to focus on temporal political power.

But say a government or other countries is bent on exterminating Christians as the German government was at killing Jews. Then resistance is not only necessary and warranted, but demanded of Christians for themselves, their faith, and future. Deus Vult indeed.

History proceeds like so:

We have a state. That state has innate complications and conflicts with what we want from it and what we say it is. This invites a significant push for negation of that state.

That negation is almost always too much and too far. An adjustment to a a stable state from the input of the two results in another base state, which will bring it's own negation.

The part that a lot of people have a problem with is that Hegel believed that this was the process of refining toward spiritual perfection.

I just consider it a reasonable model of social "tectonics", to put a word on it, given an imperfect world.

388 Unless he meant that logic has no corporal form or force.

401 To further the discussion, basically the Bible has to be read as a whole, including the often bloody and dreary Old Testament. When you start cherry picking particular books without reference to the other books or pick your favorite Apostle. You are only getting part of the story behind those words. Context is everything and that includes the historical contexts when the words were written. Early church members are also useful as you find many of the unwritten traditions and stories not in the Bible themselves. That gives additional context to what happened after the Bible ceases to tell us stories ending with the Apostles.

In a way, it is much like the Constitution--clause bound interpretivism is not the way to do it. You have to eat the whole burrito--history, text, and historical usage to come out with something resembling a complete doctrine. Far easier for most to simply issue disconnected rhetoric of cherry picked sections of personal interest.

Harder slog to understand the complexities of doctrine influenced by the original sources and practice over time.

With a little more civility from the left, I think it would have been over faster.

But a number of them decided to 1. celebrate and 2. try to push it into the message competition: "Both sides..."

The thing is that the principle that "All lives matter" counters "Black lives matter", in seeming to be a gloss over a heart-felt expression, is *exactly* the same as "both sides" to a terrible event like this.

"Charlie Kirk matters" --> "Lives on BOTH sides matter". It also starts a fight with us about whether or not we believe that Paul Pelosi's life matters, when nobody even brought that up.

"Both sides" was to "Charlie Kirk was killed" as "All lives matter" is to our black brethren wanting to hear us say "Yes, Black lives matter".

There's the part that is the actual mission, but that is target-specific, and if you are not in the target audience, you are probably not going to see or be all that interested in him. The other part is public appearances and interactions with Trump, Vance, Tucker, etc. etc. either in interviews or hosting at a TPUSA event. Those are videos that older people or people not interested in the college scene are going to see.

Speaking for myself, those are the times I've seen Kirk. The only time I've seen him at a college event was unfortunately the one he got shot at, because, well, he got shot at it.

Housing is an odd market, tends to be very local, and is a long tailing indicator. In most areas, it takes years before you can break ground, so construction today means the project was initiated no later than 2023. Some smaller rural areas might be different. And there probably was over-building coming out of Covid.

Conservative are always subject to infiltrators and grifters because they have no firm doctrine of their own. Russell Kirk tried and failed to create one but any sort of creedal notion of democracy is simply not sustainable. The left and Stan himself are always great about fair sound distortions turning into outright lies in practice.

I think you have to go beyond creed reasoning and demand a coherent and cohesive society based on faith and patriotism beyond the narrow tribalisms of the left. Nihilism of any sort needs to be shamed, ignored, and disputed any time it arises.

At some level, I think socialism/communism appeals to people because they harken back to families where the parent is supposed to go out and work/slave to take care of the kids. Kids by and large no longer work as they did in most of American history and this produces a distorted view where Gubmint is supposed to take Mommy and/or Daddy's place for resource extraction necessary to live. And you find all sorts of those messages in the Old Testament. Too many Christians ignore that at their own peril and churches don't like teaching much of it because it has some really hard truths about people, sinning, nations, and wisdom that counteracts the hubris and shiny me ism of today.

Make a kid read Ecclesiastes or Proverbs instead of hippy dippy derivative love without consequences pap they serve up in Bible school.

I was lucky in a way, mother thought i was too physically active in church so we sat way up high in the balcony. I got to read most of the New Testament that way because frankly the sermons of that particular church and pastor bored me. Thought he was fake and gay but great for TV which they started. Discovered later he was an alcoholic and was cheating on his wife with the church secretary for years.

That introduced me at a relatively young age to the awful problems of big churches.

City of Phoenix has a huge RE problem, and I suspect LA has it as well. Huge tracts of new houses were built by big developers in the 70's and 80's, thousands of them. BUT they were built very cheaply, with barely adequate plumbing, wiring, and roofing. Cookie cutter houses, and now they're 30 to 40 years old, and all of the substandard parts are falling apart, on all of them. Even worse, over the years as their conditions detreated, many of them were turned into rental houses and entire neighborhoods sank into low income status.
Now, there are areas of hundreds to thousands of homes (In Phoenix, especially around the old Metrocenter mall) that are modern ghettoes, places that were great that are now just large ghettoes.

Having had contacts in construction and dealing with the fallout of 2007, that is a symptom of rates being too low, not demand. Construction is driven (beyond replacement and absolute need) by the ability to afford to break ground and get it built. Rates are low, construction booms. Rates go up, all the starts stall out. Also the quality crashes since the goal is to borrow money to build to sell to pay off the loan, and you live on the difference. Often you wind up paying off the last build with the profits for the current build, which is why the industry collapses when the rates go up, too much debt is built up depending on cheap rates to go on.

Posted by: Its Go Time Donald at September 17, 2025 12:30 PM

Grok estimates 20-25% of illegal aliens get homes through either paying cash or ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) loans. Not to mention, many illegals get houses by pooling all their cash together and all living in the same house. A coworker friend from Canada tells me this is a massive issue in Windsor, Ontario as well, especially with people from India and Muslims.

A rough estimate, based on studies of immigrant populations, suggests undocumented immigrants’ homeownership rates are likely in the range of 20–25%, significantly lower than the 30% for all non-citizens, as they often rely on ITIN loans or cash purchases, which require substantial savings or pooled resources.

No. I would know if I meant that Paul didn't really mean what he said. You're kind of taking what he said as an absolute, when it's not clear he meant it as an absolute.

I think most Christians in history got the balance.

Paul says "Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to the governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men."

If your general principle is to submit to the authorities and you do that 95% of the time, how are you not submitting and recognizing their authority through God in those actions.

I don't think there is any suggestion that earthly authorities are flawless.

493 Same here. I knew a little about him, saw a few of videos but had no idea about his popularity. Or how much the left hated him.

Which got me wondering about the lefts insane reaction. How many of them knew anything about Charles Kirk beyond he was a conservative activist (or even that?). I'm betting not many. Yet they hated him intensely. Or more precisely, they could call up a white hot hate as required by the hive. That hate could be directed at anybody on the right anytime as required. This is the madness of mobs on display. That is disturbing.

This was the eye-opener for me. I knew of the name Charlie Kirk and the organization TPUSA. But honestly, I just thought it was another do-nothing organization like CPAC that went around holding get-togethers to talk and take pictures in fancy clothes to post to social media and not actually accomplish anything.

But when I saw the massive amount of hate and rage and celebrating from the left over his assassination, I was taken aback. Maybe he was more influential - with both the right and the left - than I thought.

494 Some people will get mad, but this is what Paul stated in Romans. How does one resist tyranny and obey the word of God - which tells you to obey the government - at the same time?

Except, in America YOU are the government. You must fight to enact godly laws and policies. You must convince your neighbors what is good and right. You - being the actual government - have an obligation to fight tyranny and promote good government. It's the premise in the opening to the Declaration of Independence.
