Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. The time has come to begin the discussion of the upcoming TXMoMe in Corsicana, TX on October 17-18. This is the TENTH annual TXMoMe, or Conservative Burning Man as it's popularly known, and it promises to be a doozy. If you're in either the Northern or Southern Hemisphere of the Planet of the Earth, contact Ben Had for details on attending. The dates and email links for all MoMes are always helpfully included on the blog's main page, left sidebar.

What started years ago as a small get-together and informal plinking session lasting a couple of hours has matured into a full scale jamboree-hootenanny including a program of shooting activities for both handguns and rifles over two days. I have to thank Ben Had, Cow Horse Queen and RancherBob for making this whole thing happen and providing the opportunity for the shooting to comprise such a significant portion of the event.

But wait! There's more! Combine that with world class food and drink, and the even world classier company of your fellow Morons, and you have a weekend that legends are made of. For those not inclined to shoot (?), there are non-stop opportunities to relax in the shade of the carport or under a handy nearby tree with a beverage and visit with your online pals to your hearts content, which is really what the whole damn thing is about in the first place..

Allow me to be serious for a minute. I have said this probably two hundred and fifty-seven times now. These gatherings are a really good time, and I know of no one who expresses regret after having attended one. Actually it goes beyond that. It's not just a weekend of laughs, it's an opportunity to connect with lots of like-minded people and create lasting friendships and priceless memories. No kidding. Think that's hyperbole? It snot. Would your ol' pal Weasel lie to you? Well, yes he would, but not about this. TXMoMe veterans will attest to the funness and completely laid-back nature of the event. Don't be a dork, do yourself a favor and get yo' ass to Texas!

Specifics of the Friday/Saturday schedule of activities will be posted here in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.

Cigar of the Week

This week our pal Diogenes scores again with this excellent re-review of the CAO Pilon Robusto.

Many of you will recall the review of the Pilon from just after New Years. I figured since I had another in the humidor, it as time to revisit this very fine cigar.
So I did.
As with most cigars, the Pilon starts with a burst of flavors with nuts, cinnamon, and pepper dominating. In the background there is a smoother creaminess and an almost raisin-like hint that will emerge later in the cigar. I found the draw to be smooth and easy with a satisfying amount of smoke and aroma. The ash showed a good burn and there was no flaking. There were no flaws in the construction of the stick I smoked.
The second third of the smoke brought forth that creaminess I mentioned with a definite dampening of the peppery side. There was a nice coffee flavor there as well. The ash remained tight and the draw as easy as the start.
The final third was just as enjoyable with the flavors merging into a deeper tone of tobacco providing a smooth finish. Typically for cigars that I am really enjoying I peel the paper ring off so I an smoke it longer. I did wo with the Pilon.
I like this cigar. It is a medium strength cigar and Nicaraguan in origin that include the binder and filler. The wrapper is Ecuadorian Habano. A great smoke that at about $6.00 doesn't break the bank, and it is one that you will look forward to for the next time. I won't wait until New Years for the next one.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

20 Yay Gub Thread! I've finally been relieved of Sunday night bath and bedtime duty. Been a minute, for sure.

Back in June I got a chronograph, and I've been having fun putting various guns 'on the clock.' Some fun comparisons and I'm creating as spreadsheet of my practical findings.

Anyhow, yesterday's test pitted a Romanian Tokarev vs a rebuilt C96 Broomhandle.

For the Tokarev, we'll use S&B 85 grain full metal jacket. I don't have any S&B Mauser ammo, but I do have this PP 85 grain, full metal jacket, which is close enough.

Did the Tokarev's higher energy give it more velocity than the 5.9" barrel on the C96s? What do you think?

23 Bummer! Learned a couple of days ago that 'Guns' and 'American Handgunner' magazines will discontinue their paper copies and go all digital and streaming. Same thing happened with Backwoodsman. Printing and mailing costs are just too high. They are good magazines but I dropped my subscription a while back because they seldom covered the topics that interest me, especially after Mike Venturino passed.

32 In honor of Charlie Kirk, I'm adding some rifle work to each range session in addition to my defensive pistol drills.

This week, discovered one of my Pmags doesn't want to feed naturally into my BCM AR. Luckily my other Gen 2 PMAG fed fine. Odd but good to know now.

Somewhere I have a .41 AE bbl and mag for a Hi-Power. I think I have a few boxes of ammo. Bought it all at least 30 years ago. I guess I should look for this stuff. And look for some .41 AE ammo. And/or dies/brass/bullets.

I didn't hear anything really new either, but thought it was timely.

One thing I used to do with my match guns is put zip ties through all the lock holes after the TSA inspection. That way I could tell immediately if it had been opened.

44 What a fantastic day. The DMVMGC rides again or maybe should be shoots again.
Blaster, Sra Blaster, Hrothgar, Ed , Iris and me hit the range this afternoon. It's been awhile. But I am walking almost normally, shot really well considering the layoff. Funny thing though, needed the eye patch off and on.

45 About the TxMoMe, are there any informal events on Thursday? Is that a set-up day?

I started a new job and will have very little PTO accumulated. I'm going to have to fly in. I also would love to spend a day in the DFW area to see my dad. So I'm having to plan this kinda tighter than I wanted. (It's also going to reduce the "arsenal" I was going to bring, and I will have to buy some ammo along the way.)

Then we went to breakfast. He got chicken fried ateak and eggs and I got the biscuits and gravy with eggs over easy.

I felt all kinds of stressed ad it showed.
Also, I have a REALLY bad habit of anticipating, no matter the caliber. I could stop it sometimes, but not always.

The rest of the range report will be going to Weasel in an email this week, as it was my first outing with my new Beretta 30X Tomcat "Get Home Bag" edition. BLUF: I like it, but I definitely need to work those fundamentals. (I think I need me a .22 semi to do that.)

Thank you! That's very kind. The pistol came in 9mm, and I bought the conversion kit because I'm a completionist. It came with an unopened box (50 rounds( of vintage ammo, so I can save that brass as well.

The kit seller had lots of options, so I went with a 5" ported, because it looks wickedly cool.

The Jericho cost $250 w/shipping and FFL. Heck of a deal as far as I'm concerned. Shoots real nice, but not as good as a SIG P226.

62 During the vigil for Charlie Kirk in Boise last week, there was an incident where an idiot looking for attention got some. Videos hit the Internet, and while watching I spotted an interesting looking character among the spectators.

It was a warm evening, everybody else was in t-shirts, but he was wearing a bulky vest. He kept his distance from the altercation, and seemed to be watching everything except the fight while uniformed police broke it up.

I figure he was either a plainclothes cop or a well armed concerned citizen. If I could spot him from shaky video after the fact, he probably greatly stood out in real life.

Just something to think about should you find yourself in a similar situation.

64 YellowBird, have heard only good things about the PerfectDraw. Personally I use a temperature probe from my old ovens on the (rarely encountered, thankfully) plugged sticks. Doubles as a nubber, nice little plastic handle at the end. But that’s the ridiculous improvising reloader in me.

71 Received a Remington Rand (April, 1945 production), .45 Colt pistol from the CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program), a year or so ago. 76 Sharon took a turn with the .32 ACP Walther PPK today. She even shot it one-handed, and still got 3 of 5 shots into the colored area of the target at 6 yards. Blaster and Hrothgar test drove the Colt Kodiak revolver w/ .44 Specials. Recoil/kick was practically non-existent and very easy to control, given that the Kodiak is a big bore revolver w/ a 4.25" barrel.

77 Finally ran out of 200g SWCs for my 45 reloading, and surprised to see my regular source (Missouri Bullet) is now same $ as equivalent plated elsewhere.

So going to switch to 230g RN plated. No specific data for HP38 but with low-pressure calibers I have found just a bit below max for FMJ serves as a good ceiling, and I always load for reliable cycling/basic accuracy and not not power factor anyway.

Assuming a General Purpose, I'd look at a Springfield Echelon pistols, the compact if you're thinking of carry.

Walthers probably have the best triggers, with H&Ks a very close second. H&K just came out with an improved VP9. $$ probably a bit over $600, haven't checked.

I'm a fan of Sig P365s, as well, which come in several sizes. They seem to have escaped the possible problems of the larger P320s.

I think the phrase you're looking for is Double Action/Single Action, often abbreviated DA/SA.

This means you're looking for a hammer-fired pistol or revolver, not a striker-fired pistol.

111 RMBS, I will definitely bring my G48's oth iron sight and the one with the Holosun green dot. I think along with the 43x, they are the thinnest grip of any Glock. I also don't like a rough grip and both are really easy on my hands. Depending on how I get them to Texas, I can also bring the G44 which is almost identical to the G48 but in 22lr. Trying to limit luggage so if I can send them via car, I can bring all three. The Holosun green dot is really amazing and worth every penny.

Go to a range and try some out or at least to a local gunshop (often abbreviated LGS). You pay a bit more at an LGS but can get more personalized service if you are unfamiliar with firearms.

FWIW, for a defensive handgun, don't necessarily look for a light trigger--more important that you find one that fits your hand and where you can handle recoil of whatever cartridge you prefer.

Handguns are few of the things that actually keep a fair amount of value even used if you find that later the one you have does not 'fit' your hand or other requirements quite right down the road.

Most modern handguns from a modern mfg made in the US will do the job, be reliable defensive arms, and have manufacturers that stand behind their warranty with accessory parts.

Make sure to price in multiple magazines as well--magazines are consumable items and I would recommend at least 4-5 magazines. A want badly name firearm for $600 can turn into much higher when if it has high priced mags/accessories.

Duncan Anthrax is correct. DA/SA can work but you have to practice at it as the heavy trigger pull then light one for subsequent shots can throw you at first. However, hammer fired were the std. for a very long time and function well--and police used to use DA/SA due to perceived less negligent discharges which is more a training issue anyway.

One advantage that hammer fired do have is thumb on the hammer to prevent self cocking upon re-instertion into a holster (ditto for the revolver hammer). Striker fired come in partially cocked models (aka Glocks Safe Action) or fully cocked (Sig P320). Personally prefer partially cocked myself.

126 Went to the range today for for my monthly women's shooting class, which I started attending in May. Shot about 100 rounds and was more pleased with my shot placement than last time. Learned more about how to take the gun apart to clean it. Covered situational awareness in public locations and state gun laws, also holster options for concealed carry. Really enjoying the class. Next month I think I am going to take my husband's gun instead of mine, just so that if I ever (G-d forbid) needed to use it in an emergency, I can feel more comfortable with it.

Stevo, may I suggest the Walther P99 AS (Anti-Stress)? It's striker fired, but unlike any other striker fired pistol, it has a "single/double action" mechanism. Rack the slide and it's a lighter "single action" trigger. Press the decocker on the top of the slide, and that gives you a heavier (but still workable) "double action" trigger. Unfortunately, Walther has ended production of the P99, so unless you can find one of the increasingly rare "Final Edition" models, you'll have to find a used one. As a P99 AS owner myself, I can vouch for the quality of the P99 AS trigger. Somewhere in the archived threads from 2023, you'll find my write up about the P99.

I tried some Magtech 71 grain FMJ's in my PPK/S SD and kept on having jams in almost every magazine for a couple hundred rounds before switching to 73 grain Fioochi FMJ. No problems after the switch. Not sure if it was breaking in a new pistol or the problem you describe.

Consider some of S&W's makes then. I think their current CS line is hammer fired (Revived Chief Special). Another is try to find an police 5906. Stainless steel, heavy as heck close to 40 oz, very minimal recoil in even +p and works fine with 115 gr. range ammo. 15-17 round mags available.

Bunch of spare parts, cheap MecGar quality mags for them, and probably one of the finest DA/SA for police grade service ever made. Only drawback is you have to go to the TSW line (a bit pricer) for a rail underneath for light mounts and night sight selection other than Trijicon is zero.

Even used, this pistols last about like Glocks with minimal care if you select the full stainless steel police models.

Also hammer fired DA/SA PX4 Storm from Beretta, tough as nails, minimal recoil due to a rotary barrel locking design, and 15-17 round mags available. I think Beretta may even have a rebate on pistols going on now. I have the Compact and it simply works--no fuss.

144 FWIW - I shot a couple of cases of S&B 9mm over the last two years. Maybe some .45 cal as well when I'm feeling rich. Winchester, MagTech, Remington ... all okay. Occasional issues. Ran into some MagTech a little over a year ago that was pretty flakey. Since then, OK. But the S&B has been pretty much flawless.

145 I tried some Magtech 71 grain FMJ's in my PPK/S SD and kept on having jams in almost every magazine for a couple hundred rounds before switching to 73 grain Fioochi FMJ. No problems after the switch. Not sure if it was breaking in a new pistol or the problem you describe.

Sometimes, with small pistol cartridges, you get weird pressure curves from some ammo that generate uneven recoil impulse affecting extraction and feeding. Depends on powders loaded--e.g. very fast versus medium fast.

FWIW, very fast powders like Bullseye are cheap but some auto pistols don't like them due to the pressure curve. Medium burning powders, like WW231 or others often can do a bit better but may take more grains (aka cost more for the ammo mfg.).

One advantage to revolvers is that pretty much all go bang but semi autos can be picky about ammo.

I get all of my reloaded ammo from a company called Dallas Reloading Service. They are retired Dallas PD officers. Their old business cards say, "We specialize in orders of 100,000 rounds or more". (They have/had the DPD training ammo contract)

Don't want to touch too much on full versus semi cocked but fully cocked probably has a bit better trigger feel but your components have to be in top shape. You are relying on the safety (if any) and sear mechanism to prevent the striker from hitting the primer.

The Glock and similar S&W M&P line for example, have trigger safeties in addition to (thumb safety on the S&W can be had too), to block the partially cocked striker. Springfield's older XD models use a grip safety to do that as well.

170 RANGE REPORT!!!

I finally got my Faxon Ion Ultralight in 5.56 to the range and zeroed my 3x SLX MicroPrism with ACCS Raptor reticle at 50m and my offset Holosun 407 at 25m. Everything was fine, and I'm thrilled.

I ALSO took the Tika T3x CTR, 24" barrel in 6.5 CM to confirm my zero.

I fired five rounds from the bench with the Schmedium bag as my rear rest. They were all covered by a quarter at 100m. I almost called it a day, but that goodness I didn't.

I fired five more, just to have a clean edge in my bullet bible folding round holder. Those five rounds went all over the place. No rhyme or reason. I was super frustrated and decided to stop shooting as I obviously had Wobbly Shit.

Came home, checked torques. Both mount crossbolts spun under 50 inch pounds (and should be torqued to 68 inch pounds. Turns out, the mount crossbolts on the Nightforce Ultralite Unimount (20moa) were both full of thread material peeled off of the nuts.

New mount ordered, received, installed, leveled, and ready to check again on Wednesday.

I'll be testing my primary round - Hornady Precision Hunter ELDX 143gr, and also something new to me: Subsonic rounds from Chalk 1 Munitions.

I seem to remember that the S&B had sealed primers too. Mebbe overrun from a military contracts were diverted to commercial sales. As I hand primed for the longest, I was always worried about touching off a primer in an S&B 9 cartridge while priming so before I swaged them, I used a hand reamer to get the pockets easier to prime first.

Went to the Lee App press and the pocket swagers work like a charm on them. Have some others to use on a regular reloading press but more of a pain to sue than the Lee one for that task. Both are easier than reaming the primer pockets.

Drove down from Ohio to Corsicana for a couple of days, and arrived when Ben Had, Rancher Bob, and Cow Horse Queen were serving hors d'oeuvres before the main body of humanity arrived the next day.

I immediately asked for the barrel into which newbies were expected to report, only to be told graciously that they had waived that requirement for that year. Also, the barrel was in the shop for maintenance.

I proceeded to meet some of the loveliest and most level-headed people I had ever encountered. Many are friends to this day and I look forward to reconnecting with them next month in Corsicana!

Several options nowadays. I've used the Wheeler fat wrench and there are some competitors now to that. Plus for other gunsmithing/general mechanics reasons, have variety of torque wrenches of various sizes. But I have seen far too many shitty screws--too hard, too soft, poor threading, etc. Those folks in the age making screws when Peter Mauser, etc. or early military arms were made almost never have issues (other than rust fastness) on their screws.

Yes, Lee, RCBS, etc. all use the same thread size, so they are interchangeable among common presses. I say common, because there are a few antiques and specialized presses (such as the Lyman nutcracker hand press and Dillon Square Deal progressive) that use odd sizes.

Nowadays, I probably would go with a 10mm Semi Auto to be honest if I had to go into bear country without a longarm.

I picked up by Colt Kodiak (.44 Magnum, 4.25" barrel) at my LGS for $1325 out the door price. It still had the QR code tag on the trigger guard. MSRP on that is $1799. Magnums are still a handful, but .44 Specials are easy to control. Blaster and Hrothgar can testify to that from their test drives today.

The Taurus Tracker in .44 Mag is not bad. The "ribber" grips help a lot, and ported barrel also seems to help. Compared to a Model 29, it was much easier, which was surprising because you'd think long barrel > 4" barrel.

The hardest part is finding a decent holster.

222 The Taurus Tracker in .44 Mag is not bad. The "ribber" grips help a lot, and ported barrel also seems to help. Compared to a Model 29, it was much easier, which was surprising because you'd think long barrel > 4" barrel.

The hardest part is finding a decent holster.

I've fired the Taurus and passed on a chance to acquire it. Don't care for ported barrels though. And a Model 29.

If I had to buy one, I would probably go with a Redhawk honestly. Typical Bill Ruger overbuilding but heavy is good in this case. The Redhawk is basically the Security Six scaled up and I think the same designer, Harry Sefried was involved.

The Super Redhawk is derived, IIRC, from the newer GP 100 design.

Years ago I had a Ruger Bisley in .44 Mag and it was pretty damn cool. The biggest problem with it was the loading gate, which meant that range time dragged on and on.

I decided I wanted something else - a Desert Eagle! (I was young and foolish, for give me.) I was broke, but a well-time deployment to Germany in an off-base hotel radically changed that. As soon as I got back, I put it on consignment at a local shop and made a down payment on a used Desert Eagle. Such joy!

A month later, the Bisley had sold, covering half the Desert Eagle, but the family had blown through the rest of the cash. I asked if I could transfer the money to something else, and this was acceptable, so I bought a Cold War SIG P226 (made in W. Germany) instead.

A much better choice. Later it fell into a crevasse whilst dogsledding through Okemos, but it was nice while it lasted.

I attended two of Westminsterdogshow's CO Morondezvouses. Second one I met Joe Mannix and YD. they are as funny as you might imagine.

Only been to one TXMOME, the 2022 one. First guy I met there was Berserker.

I can't be there this year, but wife and I are already planning for the next PNW meetup. The Horde is a magical group of folks. I say this as a lifelong introvert. If you get a chance, do it.

235 156 ... Lee dies should work in most presses. They all use the same threads. I will say unless you found a deal on a press or got one as a gift, Lee presses are the best value for cost and quality. They are the only brand I've used for 40 years with no problems. If you want a single stage press, which is all Weasel and I use, a Lee breech lock press can be had new for about 85 bucks, less if on sale. And it will last several lifetimes.

IIRC, the Dillon Square Deal press requires proprietary dies. Everything else is interchangeable AFAIK.

The P225 was the original 9mm counterpart to the P220 in 45 ACP. The double stacks came along later. Problem now is the original P225/P6 (german police/military id) mags are up to $70 bucks per when and if you can find them.

Both are accurate and often easier for people to handle with smaller hands.

252 Had a bunch of family in town for Mom's 90th birthday party. Took mom, sister, niece, and her boyfriend to the private range. Mom insisted on shooting the .357. I put .38 loads in it, but it's too heavy for her any more. Had a lot of fun, and the Garand proved far more popular than I expected. We ran through all the clips I had. The last 2 or 3 got hard to load; it seemed like the follower was coming up too high and I struggled to get the clips loaded. I had 5 loose rounds left, and put them in a clip and got it loaded. Sent the bolt home and the thing locked up tighter than Dick's hat band. Couldn't pull the trigger; couldn't get the bolt to move; couldn't even engage the safety. Any suggestions before I head to the gunsmith?

One other thing, the older P series were designed around hardball--they work best with the more graceful older hollowpoint designs resembling FMJ profiles like Golden Saber, etc. than the new truncated types like Hornady XTP bullet designs. The old Federal 9BLP works great in those as well.

Almost all the guns I've passed up were ones I couldn't afford. I didn't regret letting them go, I regretted being poor.

I would have loved to have bought a Chinese SKS when they were dirt cheap, or a Mosin out of the $50 rack, but it was not to be.

Poverty has made me very strategic in my purchases, and has also given me a taste for the obscure and therefore cheap. Lots of cool stuff can be had for cheap.

My "main" press is an RCBS because I thought I would need the leverage for sizing .30-06 and such. I probably didn't. A friend of mine uses a Lee aluminum O-frame press and he can be kind of ham-handed. He's managed to break it a couple of times and Lee has replaced each time. If you're starting from scratch, consider something like this:

It can. I buy used almost always but I can fix most of the minor problems that a firearm has--have a gunsmith for issues like a bulged barrel.

Basically armorer level on most items--don't have nor want a lathe/mill because others can do that for me better and cheaper than I can do that myself. Ditto for precision tig and mig welding.

Unfortunately, all good thing come to an end and neuromuscular issues have done a number on me along with inflammatory arthritis.

Oh! I looked at a Marlin (in .357) in the store when I picked up my Beretta. I was really surprised by the thickness (in both directions) of the lever. That sucker is monstrous.

I've used Lyman's new Turret Press, the old RCBS Rockchucker, and a bunch of lee presses.

Probably my favorites though is the Classic Cast Lee Turret for handguns and the Classic Cast Lee Press for rifle.

Never shot enough in recent years to want anything else. But progressives, Dillon is the gold std. for hobbyists.

Before making a purchase, I check the parts suppliers to see what is out there. Mostly springs are the issue, but I had the cocking piece on my FR 7 go kaput. You remember the FR 7, of course. Well, I got it running well with my custom magazine block and then it went to shit, and I puzzled over it, and had the bright idea of comparing it to another Mauser and WOW, that cocking piece is a wreck.

Ordered part, had to hand fit it, but now it runs really smooth. Delightful, honestly. It is a little off when using German plastic practice ammo, but that's to be expected. The bolt face and bullet shape are wrong, but it's worth the hassle for a big boom with no recoil and dirt cheap ammo.

281 My Lee 4-hole turret press (acquired barely used for quite a bit below the already modest "new" price) is my only one, and it has been great. Remove one part, you have a nice fairly heavy single-stage press (which I used for 30-06). Several of the dies sets acquired used, in great condition. All of it will outlive you if not wildly abused.

IANAGS but I'm trying to think of what would allow the follower to come up too high and all I can think of is that little L-shaped link hat bears against the op-rod spring. If the pins on that link or the notches that the pins fit into broke, that might do it. In any case, it doesn't sound good and it might not be a bad idea to call the 'smith before taking a loaded rifle into the shop. He may prefer to meet you at a range instead.

I wasn't actually surprised, and it was sort of what I was expecting. Years in music got me used to mingling in large crowds, and you meet some interesting people. One example, I was talking to dude one time who was shitfaced and head banging. I find out he's a scientist working in a small team of other scientists from around the world working on a better cure for malaria. The MoMe is like that. I figured there would be people from all walks of life with varying backgrounds, but with a unifying common interest, and it was exactly that. Its the people you hang with every frigging day here, and they are way more interesting in person. The setting/scenery is amazing. The gathering is amazing, the food, the booze, the ettes, the guns. It...is...a...blast. Don't be a frigging slug, show up and join the party.

I picked up my Russian SKS during the mass china import thing for $125. Market was flooded. Dude didn't know what he had. Just that it was next to a bunch of cheap P'sOS. I giggled for a while at that one.
Other favorite from those wild crazy days is the PSL. Which I think is Russian for "poor mans Dragonov". $850 new in the box. I've had people offer me $3000 for it. One of my favorite guns. Not for sale.

I got a Russian SKS at a pawnshop for about 150 back in the day but without the bayonet. Fun gun with Tech Sights on them and handloaded ammo made it a 2.5 MOA or so rifle at 100 yds. Had to do the Murray's Gunshop floating firing pin mod though to use std. primers.

I've rebuilt a few (T38's and T99s) and bought one early T99 relatively untouched that still had the AA sights and a mangled but original monopod on it. Dates to 1942. Left that one alone.

But unless you want a .303 Clone, the T99 is expensive to feed and relatively mediocre operation--bolt safeties can be bugaboos on them with wear. The older T38 is an odd semi rimmed cartridge, even harder to find, and okay if anemic as a cartridge. Not worth it except in a historical sense.

FWIW, be very careful dealing with the Japanese Lacquer on Arisaka stocks--made with poison sumac tree sap and has urushional in it (sp) which is the active ingredient in poison ivy. Do not sand these stocks!!!. Sometimes this lacquer looks like a poorly done polyurethane job toward the end of production with drips, etc. Leave it alone for health and collectibility.

325 CBD it really does the best classic snub-nose revolver "look", to me. Funny how I got it. Local store had a yuuuge consignment sale from the estate of a long-time customer. I was there just checking as I used to do for their consignment revolvers.

Clerk knew I wasn't looking to spend big $, but he sort of pushed me a bit on this as he knew I was a revolver guy. Forced me to get on the call list (I was #3). One day I was moving rocks in the front yard (xeriscape out there), get a call. Clerk says first two customers on wait list dropped out. I hemmed, hawed, hemmed some more, then drove over and put down nearly twice the $ I ever had for a gun. Glad I did. Didn't buy as an investment but easily more than doubled its price by now.

Had a nice custom holster made by a guy in FL. Always sparks a conversation (and I do shoot it, occasionally, for fun and practice, but only my own tuned-down handloads).

I have two WWII era Oberndorfs k98 and one WWI GEW98. Curiously enough, all of the specs of bolts, receiver, etc. match each other to the .001. Oberndorf (original Peter Mauser factory) never used slave labor AFAIK to produce them either.
All of mine had minor issues--the WWI 1916 Oberndorf Mauser had been tapped for a peep sight on the left side of the receiver, the 1936 was a Yugo Capture, probably reblued receiver. The 1943 had a battered and tapped receiver ring.

Yugos left the swaztikas on many of their captured Mausers for whatever reason. The Russians must have assigned a bunch of prisoners to hammer out those hagenkreuz on their captured ones.

She's ok. She fractured her shin bone and the ortho guy says 12 weeks or so to heal. She's able to get around some on crutches and with some difficulty is still going to work but is stuck in a chair once she gets there. She will be fine, she's just tired of the limited mobility.

30-06 is still fairly reasonable especially in 150gr blasting quality for the 1917 but the new mfg Garand specced ammo is a bit more and sometimes hard to find.

345 rickb223, really just go to the CMP website. There are "qualifications" buy a firearm from the CMP, but they're generally easy to meet. Membership/affiliation with a CMP-linked club, or $20 to join the Garand Collectors Association, plus some evidence of firearm safety/operational competence (got the paper checked off by my old indoor range).

I don't even allow myself to go to the site anymore (the sales part, anyway) as for several reasons I just can't add anything to the collection right now. But somebody above said they had 1917s again (this is EXTREMELY stressful to know, have long wanted one, caliber compatibility and all), even 1911s.

350 Berserker I reload 30-06, otherwise wouldn't touch off the M1s nearly as much (not that it's enough, even as is). Started with 800 rounds of CMP surplus (Greek, HXP), and still use the brass. Per my SOP I got a can of 500 rounds from Prvi Partisan as my "strategic reserve", which I expect I'll burn up some (distant?) day when I finally decide to wind down the shooting.

Garands are nice and we inherited them from FIL. Only problem is he liked brand new wood etc. on them which CMP was glad to do back in the day. Pretty stocks, certificate, and refinished hardware. Sigh. Nice to look at but not my favorites. I prefer bolt actions myself. Used the Carbine as a house gun for awhile before ammo got scarce and expensive.

Went over to ARs for that reason.

Heh. I rebarreled my first 1917 with a WWII era HS barrel. Matched the parkerizing on the receiver.

Built it from a bare parkerized receiver with new matching parts (which you could get in those days) and a beat up original 1917 stock from Numrich. At that time, you couldn't buy the repro stocks for them.

Stock has generous "character" but after cleaning, turned out to be a fairly scarce blondish walnut with a fairly open grain to it. That open grain probably caused a chip around the mag area sometime in the past. Left it as is to honor its condition.

Fun to shoot.

358 Got my M-1 thru DCM 'back in the day' … still got it, too. Looks like it may have received a bit of 'unit-level' maintenance on the stock, too. But, the cartouche is 'EMcF', so there's that. It looks as if the Anniston Depot updated the guts, too - I guess that's a good thing. It's a Springfield. My other M-1 was H&R … sold that one at a gun show in Chalmette, LA.
