I'm probably way behind on this story, but I saw the Tucker clip with Sam Altman (sp?). Talking about one of the AI people at Altman's company who was a whistleblower, who ended up "suiciding."
Tucker said he believed it was murder, and Altman basically got defensive, accusing Tucker of accusing him. I know nothing about any of it, but this is 2025. Of course I believe big tech companies might have their whistleblowers murdered, and made to look like a suicide. Posted by: BurtTC at September 12, 2025 05:06 AM (T+YTi) 20

The Yootoob cat and mouse game continues. Try to watch vids without ads, and when they catch you using a VPN, it can't track you, so it won't let you watch on another platform.
Then your VPN updates its methods, and you are invisible to Yootoob again... for at least a little while. Posted by: BurtTC at September 12, 2025 05:13 AM (T+YTi) Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at September 12, 2025 05:14 AM (O7YUW) 29

My company introduced a chatbot assistant a bit ago.
I've found it to be quite useful in crafting emails. It also produces very nicely formatted minutes of meetings that can be produced just from notes in notepad. It has some other nice tricks, that are productivity boosters, but if you try to use it for researching a problem, or finding technical docs, you spend a LOT of time building rails around its response with ever evolving prompts. I don't think it is really very useful for that approach. Posted by: ghbucky at September 12, 2025 05:20 AM (/xDbx) 36

Posted by: Thing From Snowy Mountain Sony a6400. The number of wildly good prime lenses for the APS-C sensor for under $300, even under $200 makes going with the Sony a total winner. Moving up the price point, in the $500 to $700 range you can get zooms and primes that are every bit as good as full frame sensor $2,000 lenses. Plus the size of the body and the lenses for this camera make it an ideal walking around camera. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions. at September 12, 2025 05:22 AM (aJQjq) 37
@Pixy:
Ditto what FenelonSpoke wrote at #33. Oh, and I had a thought about your comment about the BP meds working maybe too well: It takes time for you to adjust to the "new normal" - don't do anything too strenuous for a while, and if you feel even the littlest bit dizzy, put down what you're carrying, and sit down for a bit until it passes. BP meds take a while to adjust to. I'm on what's considered the weakest dose, and the first two or three days were... odd. Then things smoothed out and I was fine. (Apparently running at 'danger pressure' for a very long time takes some coming down from.) Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at September 12, 2025 05:22 AM (O7YUW) 38

@ Pixy:
Suggestion: Set up a spreadsheet for logging when you take your meds (exact date/time) with a comments column in case you want to note why you took one early, late, or missed it entirely, or if you want to describe how it's making you feel that day. Makes it a lot easier to submit something to your doctor if you need a medication adjustment (and it lets your doctor know you're serious about taking your prescribed medication on schedule.) Wed. night I told Miss Linda about my plans to drive to Indiana this month. The cricket noises were deafening . . . which probably means that as usual she is keeping her thoughts to herself. If you know that they are lying then it stands to reason that you possess evidence of this fact. This may come up with JJ's articles but it seems that a lot of people are losing their jobs for nasty remarks they have been making about Charlie Kirk. Needless to say, the retort has been "Oh, so you right wingers don't care about freedom of speech?"
I finally decided to answer a woman that was making that remark: "You and your kind have decided that the penalty for free speech is death. Pray to whatever god finds you interesting that we're only going after your jobs." The people in question aren't just some randos working in a coffee shop. In Furry Thug news, Stirling the great black cat has made himself unpopular with me. Again. He woke me, or finished waking me, at 3:45 am by sticking his cold black nose in my face and giving the trilling whine that says "I want [something]!" I chased him off the bed, twice, but by that time I was awake. So he'll have to wait until 5:00 to get his breakfast. Which was when I planned to feed him anyway -- but now I want to make sure I don't reward his behavior by feeding him earlier.

To the best of my knowledge, there has NEVER been any evidence to support that claim. There is speculation a-plenty. There are people who claim gnostic understanding. There have been accusations, and smears, but there's never been evidence. And when someone asks for the evidence, what you get is... it's not up to me to give it to you, or this is willful ignorance. You're asking me to accept that you KNOW a thing but you provide nothing beyond "c'mon, man". I've seen too many instances over the years of people getting worked up over an issue just to discover that it was never true. Remember Pedo Prince Andrew? OMG! They are models, mostly vintage, that I wear so rarely that they need to go to a new home -- and to clear out some space in my bedroom. The extra pocket money is good too. Kyoto Animation is one of those old school type companies where everyone was basically family.
Until a lunatic decided that a story idea of his was stolen and put in an anime from this company. So he proceeded to set Kyoto Animation's studio on fire with gasoline. While it was occupied. Many employees, mostly women, burned to death. The only karma in the matter was the vermin set himself on fire and was quickly arrested. He is on Japan's death row last I heard. Part of my irritation is that I think a lot of the modern electronic cameras, especially at the I-can-actually-afford-it price points, have what I would have considered back when I was rich to be lousy lenses. Posted by: Thing From Snowy Mountain
A major constraint on getting good affordable lenses has been Canon and Nikon refused or charged excessive fees to license access to make them. Sony came late to the camera market and to generate some interest they opened up the e-mount system to anybody. The results of this wide open playing field has resulted in an amazing range of lenses for the Sony APS--C camera bodies. One example. I picked up a Samyang 12mm f2.0 autofocus lens for $270. It is like 2.5" L x 2.5" dia and weighs about 9 oz. That lens is tack sharp, has excellent contrast, and has no distortion across the frame. It's kind of mind-boggling after a lifetime of buying a Canon $1500+ lenses. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions. at September 12, 2025 06:13 AM (aJQjq) 85

A new fur felt fedora, such as a Stetson, is insanely priced now, $275 for a hat I used to buy at Meyer's downtown in the '90s for $75. People applying the Gartner maturity curve to "AI" are mis-using that tool. To refer to "AI" as a homogenous thing is fundamentally poor logic.
LLM's don't appear to be economically scalable, even when they work. Re-commissioning Three Mile Island just to answer help desk calls (or whatever) is ridiculous on its face, even if it works. To thus say "trough of disillusionment" misses the point. There has to be a fundamentally different approach. It's not "AI," it's LLM, and LLM appears to be a loser, generally. It's hard to see how it will ever be efficient enough to justify the small benefits that it yields. Posted by: Mr. Proton at September 12, 2025 06:39 AM (vnb0/) 99

There is a fundamental excluded middle that can't be sustained in a representative republic anymore by white lies and polite fictions.
You can't have an ideology that commands subservience and homogeneity on pain of death operating as just another faction in a system designed to forbid subservience and homogeneity. The core beliefs of Liberalism are indeed "violence" to anyone who believes independence and true political diversity are dangerous and lead society away from the utopia they promise. Living as you see fit and choosing your leaders as you see fit is completely incompatible with a faction that demands Gleichschaltung. It's like a political Russel's Paradox. The set of Political Liberty cannot contain the element "Not Liberty" and maintain consistency. A liberal republic has no room for a faction that believes that Liberalism and a Republican form of government are existential threats to human happiness and flourishing. There is Liberty, and there is Not Liberty, and there is no grey area in-between. There is no 0.5 Liberty. There are many forms of the two within their own sets, but the union of the two sets is Null. Posted by: Warai-otoko at September 12, 2025 06:50 AM (06Hmj) 108
Apple's A19 Pro beats AMD's 9950X3D in Geekbench single-core tests. (Tom's Hardware)
Though the A19 Pro has two full-speed cores and the 9950X3D has sixteen of them. Geekbench seems to favour Apple, but it's still a solid result. It’s definitely got some speedy p-cores. It’s getting killed in multi core, with AMD having 12 more cores, so not surprising. But the Apple M5 chip should be a beast if the A19 is any indication. Those are coming out on Vision Pro 2 and iPad Pros soon, apparently, then MacBooks, Mac Mini, and Mac Studio next year. Posted by: SpeakingOf at September 12, 2025 06:50 AM (6ydKt) 109

The key problem with the "don't let them have guns" approach is the same problem that approach has with the population at large.
How? If "don't murder that guy it's illegal" doesn't work, then how is "don't have a gun it's illegal" going to work? Some murder-bent troon is not asking Mother May I to acquire a rifle to go kill someone, and giving up the idea when they can't go pick up a 10/22 from Cabelas on their way home from work. Practical steps: all Antifa members and supporters must be arrested and imprisoned as domestic terrorists for a number of years.
2) gender change surgery and treatment must be banned, and any medical personnel continuing to engage in it must be imprisoned. -- I'm sure he does, Salty. I guess I'm also taking my anger and sorrow deeper to the underlying layers that made this possible. The pure hate coming from the left. The pure hate being fed to school children and college young people by the fanatical hard left teachers and professors. The pure hate that is churned out nonstop by the most pitiful excuse for "media" I have ever witnessed. The pure hate that is tweeted out by the worst kinds of people that could ever have been elected to office. They are all guilty for Charlie's murder. Until the time comes when they change, until the time comes when they can no longer pollute minds and convince them murder is justified, Trump can hunt down those responsible for this atrocity. But there will be more. There's a lot broken with these sick people. Nick Freitas in the sidebar expressed my feelings better than I'm doing. Want some good news? Oldest passed his Star Scout rank board of review last night. He's been working hard, and I am confident he will pursue it to Eagle Scout. Youngest got one of the starring roles in Seussical the musical junior. Dude is whip smart and he can sing on pitch as easily as he breaths. Freak.

A lot of people are confusing “crazy” with Evil. That is a mistake. Evil is often very clear and rational about what its goals are, and how to achieve them.
And Evil revels in having a lot of stupid foot soldiers who understand nothing but always do what they’re told. Posted by: Tom Servo at September 12, 2025 07:56 AM (l8N5O) 240

I bought a cloth covered frisbee for dogs, and taught my dog to catch it. Actually, she taught herself, and it is her new favorite activity.

Morning Horde, thx Pixy.
The people cheering the Kirk murder aren't crazy as they know what they want. They , especially the middle class, are stupid. Once the leftist revolution gets going the middle class gets chewed up. The danger is that much of the mainstream culture has become sick, warped, and poisonous, and that cannot be fixed politically. It must be excused, but the cost of doing that is frighteningly high. Posted by: Tom Servo at September 12, 2025 08:02 AM (l8N5O) 255

Not everyone cheering the murder would be declared crazy. It's possible that there wouldn't have been a murder if all that hatred and lack of respect for life didn't exist.

The end result of the Left is a small inner party, well compensated, a larger outer party of useful idiots, with little but busybody power, and the mass of population as thralls.
This has not worked for 154 years, measuring from the Paris Commune. No matter the wealth of the nation, how smart the people are, or the cultural background. Posted by: NaCly Dog at September 12, 2025 08:05 AM (u82oZ) 267
