But Trump Didn't Lower Prices Yet!: Inflation Comes In at Negative 0.1%, Meaning Prices Came Down in July in Absolute (not Just Relative) Terms
Trump has been making the case for months that we are no longer in Biden's "transitory inflation" phase. Jerome Powell never pre-emptively raised interest rates due to Biden's inflationary spending, and actually lowered them just before the election to boost Biden's chances, despite inflation still being well above the target rate.
Meanwhile, he refuses to lower interest rates for Trump, despite 1, inflation near the 2% target, and 2, signs of a weakening job market. Well, inflation for July had been "expected" by "experts" to come in at 0.3%, for an annualized rate of 3.6%. Instead, they came in at -0.1%, meaning prices went down, and if this rate were annualized, prices would come down 1.2% for the year. As I've said, the fed fears deflation because people will tend to sit on their money if they know their money increases in value just by hoarding it. Will he finally reduce rates? Allegedly he's considering doing so for later this month, but just by a small amount. 0.25% or 0.5%. An optimistic POV on that; a country doesn't slide into civil war just from social conflict. In almost every case recently and long ago, a true civil war begins when the army splits in half and both sides go after each other. That's when things get sporty! Not many realize that in 1861, more commissioned US Army officers joined up with the Confederacy than stayed in the Federal Army. (a big part of why the Confederacy was overconfident)
As long as a Government has solid control of it's army, then the most likely outcome of severe political unrest is a "Time of troubles" such as Ireland and Scotland have seen in the past.

No, a rate cut isn't long overdue because of the stock market. A rate cut is long overdue because it will most help the middle- and lower-class and small business owners, including with mortgages and other loans (car loans, business loans, etc). Rich guys don't care about a $250 increase (or decrease) in their monthly mortgage. Middle and lower-income people do. Very much.
A rate cut will also slash billions from the cost of our debt, which will benefit the entire country.
There is a reason Powell has refused to reduce rates: he wants to sabotage the overall economy and inflict as much misery on Trump and his working-class voters as possible.
I recognize that not everybody here thinks a rate cut is a good idea. That's fine. I think they are dead wrong, but whatevs.

They only say it is the reason. The real reason is because inflation is a vig paid to government. Technology and the accumulation of knowledge is *deflationary* (I estimate 2-4% a year) if things are stable. Gov profits from that plus inflation. That is the only reason the fed wants inflation.

Also, it helps the job market a lot.

Here's the thing - Trump is advocating for reducing the interest rate, which reduces the interest on the National Debt. Drop the interest rate a point and the U.S. saves $500 billion per year in interest. That is 1/3 of the yearly defect - poof! Add in tariffs, and another $500 billion goes poof. Budget cuts another $100 billion, we are left with a deficit around $500 billion, 1/3 the size of what he inherited. In one year. Grow the economy at a healthy 3-4% and that goes away as well within 4 years. Then you start paying DOWN the national debt, $200 billion a year.

1. Lowering rates will be a big signal that the Biden shitstorm of gross inflation is not only over, but that Trump was the guy that steered us out of that. Democraps can't have that.
2. It's also psychological because a signal that inflation is over and the economy is good helps spur spending, job hiring, and overall happiness (which itself leads to more spending and hiring).

I always figured that Trump's 2016 ability to set economic records was just that they cooked the books for Obama so hard anything competent set records. But lots of economic activity runs on confidence and nobody after a crash forgets the crash for some time.

Banks can't create extra money to give out to people who want to borrow on lowered rates. Banks can only create extra money if the Fed allows the creation of more money, expanding the money supply, specifically expanding M0.

"Reserves" doesn't link to anything. "Assets" is more meaningful.
If I opened the Crusader Bank and Trust with $1 Million in cash, no other assets, and no liabilities, I couldn't "create" anything--my maximum available funds to loan would be $1 Million. If I attracted an addition million in deposits, my funds available for loans would go up by a million, not a penny more.
And both of those calculation purposely left out the "reserve requirements" of a couple of percent because they clutter up the illustration. But Crusader Bank and Trust didn't "create" any money.

We are in a debt system, and dollars are created solely by credit and debt. The fed only states the rate at which money can be lent, not whether or not it can be lent. If it is more expensive there are fewer borrowers, and the money creation is lower.

Look, if your credit union wants to loan you money they originate it from BNY or BOA or one of the other big banks, who are members of the federal reserve. Same thing if you get money on a credit card. The loan is covered by the big banks borrowing from the Fed, at the rate the Fed Chair sets.
The US Treasury sells bonds and notes and the Fed covers it by law. Fed creates money now

Someone suggested he wants to actually get the Fed to stop holding bank reserves (about $3 trillion worth). That’ll flood the bond market with buyers. That should lower bond rates and allow the government to refinance the debt with much longer bonds.
Also the Fed pays banks interest on the holdings, that money would start going to the Treasury instead.

Crusader, I have a book you might like, it is Gold in the Woodpile by O. K. Burrell, and it is about banking in the Northwest from the first settlers up through the Depression. Not really a history, more of a series of anecdotes by a member of the school of business at U of O when Eugene was serious schooling

Many federal civil service employees had long been able to retire and receive generous pensions, social security and Thrift Savings, not counting other benefits for healthcare, life insurance, etc. On top of that, many of those opted to take the extremely generous offers to/through their agencies to leave ("to find other employment") but remain on payrolls through December.
And still others had "transportable skills" along with benefits and left Federal service for private employment, at least for a while. They are often the good "civil society"/deep state rovers - back and forth, back and forth.
Now dependent upon the administration & job.
