Feel Good Story 29-yo Becomes First Woman to Cross U.S. on a Skateboard–Honoring Stepfather Whose Ashes Were Carried in a Necklace ![]() The stepfather who always believed in her was with her at the end, as his ashes rested inside her necklace while she crossed the finish line. Brooke Johnson had just become the first woman to cross the United States on a skateboard—a record-setting 3,226-mile journey that began in Santa Monica, California and ended when she walked into the Atlantic Ocean at Virginia Beach after 119 days on the road. The 29-year-old lifted her skateboard over her head and couldn’t help but think about Roger, the man who made it all happen—even though he was only there in spirit. Late in his life, Brooke’s stepfather broke his C5 vertebrae and became a quadriplegic. His health continued to decline until he passed away last year. As time was running out, stepfather and daughter often talked about Brooke’s dream of cross-country skateboarding, and she planned to push him across the finish line in a wheelchair. Roger never once doubted that she’d make it. *** “If there’s one thing you take away from this trip, it’s that you can truly do anything you put your mind to.”Read the whole thing. And hug your loved ones because life is short. A Texas man has been charged with murder following a game in which he and his friend took turns shooting each other in the head with rifles while wearing Kevlar helmets. On 17 August, good friends Sean O’Donnell (37) and Aaron Prout (34) were hanging out in the former’s home when they decided to play a very stupid and dangerous game – taking turns shooting each other in the head with a rifle while wearing a Kevlar helmet for protection. Kevlar helmets are used by modern soldiers because they are known to whithstand heavy impacts, but they are not completely bulletproof. In this particular case, the two friends, who had been drinking, were reportedly holding the Kevlar helmet above their heads while the other tried to aim at it with a rifle. All it took was for one of them to miss their shot by a few millimeters to turn their friendly game into a tragedy. “Hard to believe two so-called friends would take turns shooting at each other wearing a Kevlar helmet, inside a house in a residential neighbourhood, while using a rifle,” Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez wrote about the incident on X.Check out the whole story. It cuts down on single-use plastic. It keeps you hydrated. There’s a catch, though. Many of us don’t clean our bottles nearly as well or as often as we think we do, and the germs that hitch a ride on our hands, rims, and lids can stick around. *** A study on the campus of Purdue University put everyday bottles under the microscope to see how clean they really are and which habits help or hurt. The takeaway is a reality check with simple fixes that anyone can put into practice. *** The research team kept the question simple: “How clean are the bottles that students actually use all day?” To get real-world answers, they collected 90 bottles directly from students. They asked owners how they used and cleaned their bottles, then tested the bottles in two ways. First, they swabbed the outer surfaces using a rapid hygiene test called ATP that lights up when organic residue remains. This signal is widely used in food safety as a quick screen for whether a surface is truly clean after washing. Second, they rinsed the insides and counted bacteria clinging to water-contact surfaces. They measured common water-loving bacteria and checked for coliforms, an indicator group that can signal when conditions could support more concerning contamination.Read the whole thing to get the specifics. ----- Speaking of fecal matter - the ONT continues a "regular" feature The #1 Dessert to Help You Poop In the Morning, According to a Dietitian See what I did there? ![]() Army veteran from Vermont gifted free tractor for maple syrup operation The Kubota compact tractor was given free to a Vermont maple syrup producer by a special program honoring military veterans who now work in agriculture. *** According to the website of Wild Woods Maple, Niles served the U.S. Army for more than 25 years and deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. The website says he was also an instructor at the Army Mountain Warfare School in Jericho. After he retired, Niles and his wife, Katie, started Wild Woods Maple and have been growing their family business ever since. Wild Woods Maple recently earned bragging rights by winning a pair of awards in the 2025 Vermont Maple Festival in St. Albans. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent @SecScottBessent 7h The Federal Reserve is among the foremost drivers of inequality in America. By failing to deliver on its inflation mandate, the Fed allowed class and generational disparities to grow worse, expanding the divide between asset-owners and lower-income Americans. Lincolntf I of course have no specific info but the context is that Russian drones have used Polish airspace many times the last 3 years when attacking targets in eastern Ukraine. This time? Who knows. Maybe some "went stupid" for some reason (though I haven't seen much info indicating that EW has been successful on these) and wandered off course.
Many russkis are also convinced some Uke drones did the same thing in reverse, ducking into Baltic airspace before turning east to hit targets close to the border up north. What's distinctive this time is interception by Polish/NATO aircraft. Posted by: rhomboid at September 09, 2025 10:10 PM (U/Byj) 77

Saudis loathe and fear the Persians and Qataris and desperately/correctly desire regime change in both places. Turks are on some weird jag WRT Israel, but remain bitter rivals and enemies of the Iranian mullahs. Public statements condemning this/that in the eastern Arab world, especially anything connected to Israel, require standard filtering. Saudis' #1 enemy is a tie between Iranian regime and Qatar and their Brotherhood pets. All these countries "agree" on almost nothing, and have interlocking/overlapping sets of allies and foes.

Posted by: Banana Dread Pirate Autumn Spice Balls Dream at September 09, 2025 10:15 PM (3uBP9) Legal rights to the name Yes. Someone else had the rights (I think it was Chris Squire). So the four guys just went with their names. The Union Tour was awesome! Saw them twice on that tour. I guess they overcame the legal tussle to put that tour together and release the Union album. Interesting story about that from Rick Wakeman. He spilled the beans on how dysfunctional that process was. I'll see if I can find it. Posted by: Doof at September 09, 2025 10:19 PM (Wc8sE) 106

One of the most hilariously stupid changes made was when maple syrup grades went from (as I recall) two levels of Grade A, and then Grade B, to ..... well, I've never bothered to learn the new system. I just get the darkest version available, since that will be Grade B, or close. Much more/better flavor. Never understood why Grade A was more expensive (I mean I know higher production cost, but for the consumer, made now sense).

Maple syrup bottle handles are just a throwback to the original packaging. They started by using ceramic jugs (which of course had a jug handle). Eventually, they switched over to hand soldered tins. That was all before they were shelf stable, so the syrup wasn't being sold. It was being stored for personal use.
What WAS being sold during this time (1800's) was hard sugar (candy). That was because, no refrigeration available or needed. The bottle handles are nothing more than a nostalgia reference to the original ceramic jugs. Posted by: Orson at September 09, 2025 10:41 PM (dIske) 173

People are just sick and tired of the two-tiered double-standard reporting. As has been said, reverse the races in this story. How many cities would have already gone up in flames? To me there's a point of difference between not caring about the peasants so they could get more $, and actually intending to kill the peasants. Both should lead to removal, but it's kind of like the difference between Imperial Germany and Nazi Germany. And yes, I realize that the Imperial Germans weren't any worse or better than the British or French in WW1 despite the victor written history and wartime propaganda. WW2 was a different story.

Also, as a Vermonter, please allow me to pontificate on maple syrup.
Until about 10 -15 years ago, pure syrup was graded from "Grade A Fancy" to "Grade B". The rich flatlanders from NY, CT and MA always snatched up the Grade A stuff, but didn't know that the grading wasn't about quality, it was about color. Grade A is damn near colorless. Grade B is good and dark. Grade A is sweet, but with very little 'maple' flavor. Grade B is sweet but with lots more earthy maple flavor. Nobody I knew ever bought Grade A. Grade B is where it's at and always has been Nowadays there's no A or B. Just ignore the light colored stuff and go for dark robust or whatever it's called now. 294 fighting fire with fire? No, I thought fire ants were the insect version of firemen.
Do you regularly have fire ants around for general purposes? Just a couple of mounds in the back yard. They showed up on their own uninvited, but since I didn't take steps to have them removed right away, I think they have squatters rights now. Did you shoot the ants out of a potato type gun? I went to the mound and scooped a few shovelfuls into an empty Amazon box, which I then dumped on/near the flames. Or perhaps you had them already in a hose and just opened a nozzle and they flew out like the flow of water? Nope, just repeated that Amazon box thing a few times. If they had extinguished the fire did you expect them to grow in size and power? Nope. I expected them to go back to their ant mound and maybe go get a couple of beers when their shift was over. Would they consider you friend or foe after your attempt to use them as a fire extinguisher? I don't know if I should've called it "fossil" or "fossilized record of biological activity". That last link I posted has a link to the actual paper in a .pdf form. This is the relevant quote from that: Poppy seeds and leopard spots co-occur with organic carbon in ferric-iron poor mudstones but are absent in ferric iron-rich mudstones and conglomerates that lack organic matter (Fig. 1C). These relationships indicate the vivianite and greigite in these features formed by reaction between organic matter, oxidized iron, and sulfate; geological context and petrography indicate these reactions occurred at low temperatures. On Earth, such organic matter mediated mineral forming reactions are often driven by, or are closely associated with, microbial respiration of organic matter [e.g., 5], and models of the reaction chemistry that formed these features are consistent with microbially mediated process [6]. These properties mark poppy seeds and leopard spots as potential biosignatures. Analysis of the core sample collected from this unit using high-sensitivity instrumentation on Earth will enable tests to assess the biogenicity of the minerals, organics, and textures it contains. Good woman and reporter, that Jessica Machado, from the West Portugal region of the People's Republic...
Jessica Machado@Jessicamachadoshow I'm watching the Boston primary election results come in and I'm feeling dread. Michelle Wu pulling away with close to 70% of the vote is a harsh reality. As a conservative woman, wife and mother in Massachusetts, approaching 50 years old, my knowledge about politics, policy and corruption weighs on me daily, inspiring me to work harder to share truth and shed light on things hidden. But sometimes, it's hard to stay motivated. I don't want a far right state. I don't want a far left state. I want compromise. With every day that passes, I feel our state moving further and further away from the one I was born into. The values of family and community being dismantled with each legislative session. The wasteful misappropriation of our tax dollars on things none of us want. As a mother, I'm watching my children struggle to buy a home, even after they did everything we were told they needed to do. I am so worried for their futures... In the "made it bark" department, today I messed with a little old Iron Horse one cylinder 4-cycle engine. They were commonly used as washing machine engines before rural electrification, and had kick starters. This one is equipped with a rope cup for a rope starter. Bore stroke about 2" by 1 1/2", at a guess. I tore it right down, took the valves out, refaced them on the lathe, and lapped them into their seats with compound. Piston and rings were good; did not mess with them. Connecting rod was loose on the journal, so I filed the bearing cap a little, and got rid of the slack. Adjusted tappet clearance by grinding the ends of the valve stems. Cleaned the ignition points. Sprayed a little brake cleaner into the spark plug hole, and put a wad of scotchbrite soaked in brake cleaner in the intake port. Put it on the ground and set a foot on it. Pulled the starter rope. Pop, pop! Wrapped the rope around the cup, and pulled again. Poppity, poppity, pop, pop, pop. It ran for a second or two, and picked up speed until it used all the fuel provided. I won! Got to hear it bark.
I am going to fit it with a weed-eater carb, and see if it can be made to propel a bike. Engine is 80 years old. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 10, 2025 01:03 AM (1ogME) 415

Something else I stumbled on today that I'm geeking out over: https://tinyurl.com/2y8ot342 Some Krauts have a ring laser gyro, a Sagnac interferometer, acting an independent measure of earth's rotation and axis movement (precession and nutation). They increased the precision of this type of device by 2 orders of magnitude, getting to the level of the high precision astrometric methods used now. This is quite an advance. It gives an independent measure of the earth's rotation and polar motion independent of astronomical observations. If those Krauts can squeeze and extra order of magnitude of precision out of that system, it will be able to detect fucking General Relativistic effects, geodetic precession and frame-dragging, of the earth's rotation. That Sagnac rig will tell what the earth did relative to "its own inertial" axes, and the astronomical observations tell what it did relative to a set of fixed axes (well, almost, at least over time scales of hundreds of years). The difference will show those subtle GR effects. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at September 10, 2025 01:16 AM (w6EFb) 423

It was the episode where Batman and Robin are climbing up the wall of a building holding on to a rope in a way that looked awfully like walking along a horizontal building facade with the camera tilted a quarter turn. Cato the Elder pops his head out of the window and says “Carthago delenda est!”. It got a lot of laughs!

And we need to make it easier to involuntarily commit violent schizophrenics. It would save many lives. And, yes, it might be used against us some day, but it is a very definite mental disease, and can be diagnosed properly. Make it need more than one psychiatrist if need be. We also need to commit the resources to open mental institutions. I also suspect the killer in Charlotte was only mad north by northwest: he knew what he was doing when he killed her. His lawyers will plead insanity, of course.

First World Problems!
I have a few DVD players around. I use the BluRay mostly. It plays the old DVDs fine. Mostly. Cox Communications decided to do some maintenance so no streaming for an hour or two. Decided to watch Star Trek:TOS on DVD. I've had them for a while. 15 years or so. Did not work. So, I tried another, older DVD player. Didn't work. Tried DVD player on workstation. No worky. None of the DVDs of season 1 for ST:TOS worked. I'm guessing Paramount used the same shoddy DVD maker as Warner Bros. I don't know that for sure, but it seems that way. I watched Firefly instead. I will endeavor to persevere. Posted by: Puddleglum, cheer up for the worst is yet to come at September 10, 2025 01:57 AM (sAmhv) 449

My Star Trek: TOS collection is blu ray, so I guess I am safe for a few years. I think I bought the blu ray set because you have a choice of the original video or the original video with improved special effects. For example, engineering is using a phaser to cut into the wall of a locked room. The original video has a redshirt holding a phaser and a line of spalling appearing on the wall with the phaser sound effect. The improved effect has a line of bright light extending from the phaser to the wall. This was a labor of love! It was what they would have done if they could have back in the day! Recommended!

457 Can you stream from phone to TV?
Posted by: Boss Moss No. My TV is old. Not 'still has tubes' old, but old for a flat screen. The picture is slowly going away. I'll have to look to get a new one soon. I'll need to re-arrange the furniture because the table I use is too small for the stands on the news TVs. The current old TV has one stand holding the screen up. New ones have two. So, If I get a 50in, I'll need to use a different stand, which I do have, just in no rush to move it. I probably should. I need to clean this place. This would force me to attack the herds of dust bunnies. Posted by: Puddleglum, cheer up for the worst is yet to come at September 10, 2025 02:21 AM (sAmhv) 466

There was a scene in 1967 Bedazzled where the Devil, played by Peter Cook, scratches a brand-new LP and carefully repackages it for sale. It later shows up in a scene where our Faustus, Stanley Moon, a short-order cook, played by Dudley Moore, tries to seduce the girl he loves by playing the latest “mood” music LP for her. Of course with the annoying skip on it, it doesn’t work. It’s a good retelling of the Faustus story, played mostly for laughs.

I bought a particular LP at a record store and was so disappointed that it skipped on one song.
Took it back & exchanged for another copy of the same album. Skipped in the *same place* so took it back... Clerk was skeptical of my "system" and didn't want to exchange again, but was willing to play it on the store's system. *skip* right where I told him. He took yet another copy out of store stock and whaddaya know? IT skipped in that same place. Got my money back & said I'd wait for a different batch to arrive.
