18 @Bigen's Dog: Mint *is* Ubuntu with some extra features and fixing some user-hostile design choices that Ubuntu has made recently (such as the Snap store; if you don't know what that is, then take my word for it that you want it disabled; Ubuntu enables it by default but Mint disables it). If you run Mint and install packages designed for Ubuntu, they'll Just Work™.

So if you've narrowed it down to Mint or Ubuntu, I'd definitely say go with Mint.

25 @15/Biden's Dog:

Mint is based on Ubuntu and on Debian
Ubuntu is based on Debian

There's a couple of big differences between Ubuntu and Mint:

1. The desktop environment. Mint's premier desktop is "Cinnamon" and it's one they are the project maintainer (and chief developer) of. Ubuntu uses a Gnome desktop.

I personally prefer Cinnamon because its look-and-feel was the easiest transition from Windows 7 for me. Gnome felt confusing.

2. Ubuntu uses "Snap" for software distribution. Clem (of Linux Mint) very much wanted to avoid this and would stick with apt for system installation, and then add flatpack for installs of software that brought all their own libraries with them, so they could run as an encapsulated bubble. Those installs are larger because of the extra baggage, but they allow you to install software that might otherwise have library conflicts with your system libraries.

See Clem's linux Mint blog entry from June 2019 for more reasoning why they avoided Snap:
https://tinyurl.com/mu4utbt8

The best advice I think I can give you is to try them both on a test machine. See which works better for you, that's important thing. It has to feel right to you.

(Just one more quick reply before I get overtaken by the evil paperwork)

Yes. This. I have a recently-acquired Windows 11 laptop that I keep air-gapped that I picked up for the purpose of taking notes in meetings. (The notes get transferred to a full desktop via USB stick.)

The blasted thing keeps popping up "You should connect to the internet!" and "Your windows security hasn't been updated" when I'm in the middle of working.

I'll be putting Linux Mint on that machine in a dual boot scenario, and it will be the primary operating system. (I use LibreOffice Writer as my document creator and my note-taker, so that'll be an easy conversion.)

Okay, evil paperwork time now, for real.

Damn, it's way to far a walk to find the jar...wait, it's Marmite! The point is we must have bought it about 20 yrs ago on our last trip to England. Do you and others you know enjoy Marmite? Do you think it's safe for me to try?

50 The big news from Da Swamp is that, while it's still warm (77 F.) outside at 5 am, the humidity has plunged to . . . 56%. Desert people would laugh, but compared to the usual 80 or 90% we have at this hour, it's pretty darn good.
Following my second cup of coffee, I'll change, stretch, and walk for half an hour. Maybe more.

I slept later today because I stayed up to nearly 11 watching a retrospective on a certain TV show that many of us love and will discuss ad infinitum, and others don't care about, so I won't go into detail. Maybe I need to do that more often, stay up until 11, instead of hitting the hay at 10.

Anyway! How's the world spinning?

53 G & R, I had a look at your suggestions about Linux installation. Sounds like it's a day's work with everything, including buying a hard drive to back up things. Fortunately a lot of stuff on this 2020 computer is connected to my former work, most of which can be tossed. The remaining items, my personal pictures and writing, I backed up long ago on a couple of flash drives and on my now-regular desktop Mac, and they have been edited and added to over five years. So the documents and pics on this computer are historical documents, nothing more. Even without deleting anything, I have nearly 280 GB free on this laptop.

I'll go have a look at that video. Thanks!

I used to tell people that Linux was a toy OS for people who'd never seen a breast. It's gotten better in recent years, largely due to people wanting to make a UI which didn't rely on the terminal and esoteric commands, Steam making gaming work, and the inexplicable desire of MSoft to make Windows a more annoying version of MacOS.

Apparently, according to the Indian VP of Windows, their plan moving forward is for all input to be voice and have an AI running to determine which context you're working in. I was like... are you actually retarded?

The power supply finally gave up the ghost. I have a refurbished laptop with Linux Mint and its fine, except for the flaky keyboard. That has nothing to do with Linux. This laptop is 'refurbished' for a reason. I bought it cheap on Amazon so wasn't expecting perfection. I'm using it right now! With a spare keyboard/mouse. :-) My needs are light though.

A Microsoft account is usually required to install and activate Office and Microsoft 365 Family or Personal. What it really comes down to is Microsoft is in the business of making money and this is one way to ensure they get paid for their work. You may hate that, you may despise, and if you don't, it really doesn't matter. This is a design choice Microsoft made which is their prerogative. Don't want to play. There's plenty of other options. But it's not that Microsoft isn't keeping you from opening your own files.

GOG.com (Good Old Games)

That's their specialty and reason for existence.

Some titles are still cluttered up with nonsense but on the whole it's trouble-free.

87 Yeah, it’s Microsoft’s choice but the subscription model for software is a money-grubbing PITA.

I’m pretty sure everybody here preferred the days where you bought the box, paid for that software, and used that software for as long as you needed or until the software was updated to the next version and you went through the entire process again, if you chose to do so.

And if you didn’t, your old software worked just fine, without some newer features that you probably weren’t using anyhow.

But nope, every big software company wants that rent-seeking subscription fee for software you’ve probably paid for several times over just so they can show that steady revenue stream on the books.

Now they want to turn the entire world into a subscription model.

Even Star Trek in the 24th century knew better than to make all input be voice commands. Sure, they told the computer to do things and it did it, but they also used a touchscreen interface for most operations (like flying a starship).

And if you have Amazon Prime, check out the Amazon Games section of your account.

They give out several free games every month, and a lot come through GOG, also some from Epic Games Store, so you can download it and own it.

I’ve gotten several freebies on GOG that way.

That ought to kill the cube farm or the "open environment" movement. Places like Galvanize and We Work are doomed.

Even trying to get a coffee and do some "creative work" will be noisy with the loudmouth retard injecting garbage into everyone's work.

Worst hit will be the guys watching pr0n while the rest of the family sleeps.

Yeah, we used to call that updating from Version 1.0 to version 1.1, and it all worked just fine with a CD in the box you paid for.

Then when they did a lot of updates and added features it was called Version 2.0 which was then updated as needed to Version 2.1, etc.

The only difference now is you don’t often get the box and you have to pay these people by the month or year to do something they’ve been doing all along.

Nobody said people were supposed to get something for nothing, my problem is the subscription not the fee.

And water is wet. Ever use Adobe? Apple? Autodesk? Salesforce? Oracle? The commercial perpetual license ship sailed years ago and it isn't coming back. Again, these commercial software house are money making operations and subscriptions are a highly effective way to combat piracy and maximize monetization. You may hate it; nothing is going to change. You either deal with their constraints or you move on.

On the other hand, there are plenty of options that still use the perpetual license model. Linux for example. Affinity Photo as another. Another is Libre Office. Or Thunderbird.

Pay to play or play it your way. It is a choice.

Good Ol' Games. GOG.com. Vintage and newer games. There's a client that helps manage things but you can just download the games and play them without it. One caveat, some games require internet connectivity anyways so it won't help with that, but I imagine you would avoid those types of games.
