The Communist/Islamist Axis Is Powerful, And Temporary
The Queens district that Mamdani used as a springboard to seize power in New York had formerly been held by Aravella Simotas, a fairly typical representative of the next generation of old school Democrats, before being ousted by Mamdani using Muslim bloc votes. On paper, both Simotas, a child of a Greek-American family who had lived in Africa, and Mamdani, the son of Indian Muslims also out of Africa, were both young ‘progressive’ Democrats who had all the right left-wing positions. Mamdani was backed by the Democratic Socialists of America while Simotas was backed by the Queens Democratic Party. There was virtually no difference between their actual positions forcing Mamdani to adopt increasingly insane leftist positions that are now coming back to haunt him to stand out.. “I’ve worked with Aravella, and I’m not quite sure how you could be more left-leaning than she is,” a councilwoman said.Pace Daniel Greenfield, but Mamdani's lunatic political positions are not "coming back to haunt him!" On the contrary, his anti-Israel and anti-West pronouncements endear him to his sizable Muslim voting bloc, while also pleasing the lunatic left, which is reflexively anti-Israel and anti-Semitic. And his nutty economic policies absolutely thrill the large numbers of hard left who live in NYC, while not being off-putting to the straight-off-the-boat Muslims. The wealthy progressives on the Upper West Side and Park Slope just love the idea of voting for a leftist, which they get to do every year, but he is also a Muslim, and that sends a delicious shiver up their spines. Imagine...sticking it to the man TWICE with one vote! Absent some calamity, Mamdani is going to win. Oh sure, Eric Adams might drop out if the bribes are big enough, and maybe either Curtis Sliwa or Andrew Cuomo will too, leaving one of them to try and capture the halfway sane Democrat vote plus the few Republican votes in a rabidly leftist city. But that is improbable. So NYC will be governed for the next four years by a crypto-Islamist communist. We will see socialism plus Islamism in action, and it is going to be a wild ride. The governor has a fair amount of authority over NYC, so she might control his more insane impulses, but there is a huge amount of damage that he can do in four years, including cementing Islamist control over a huge voting bloc, and easing the way for open anti-Semitism to flourish in America's largest city, with its huge Jewish population. New York City is going to be an ugly place, as corporations relocate to avoid confiscatory taxes and anti-business policies. And a fair number of people will leave, because it isn't a particularly safe place now, and Mamdani's explicitly anti-police attitude won't make that any better. NYC's tax base is going to take a hit, and it might be heading to Detroit/Oakland territory! And that is sad, because it once was a great city. But the people will speak in November, and they will get what they are voting for...or, sadly, not bothering to vote!

Just because you personally put away childish things, had an epiphany 30 years ago, don’t try to extrapolate and assume the masses will too. Sadly it doesn’t work that way. This was one of my great blind spots, among others.

If/when he wins, my alma mater (Bowdoin College) where Mamdani went will surely feel pressure to celebrate him, but Bowdoin also has a large Jewish cohort (unfortunately, mostly left leaning), so it will be interesting to see how they choose to cheer him as an alum without mentioning his obvious anti-semitism. The alumni golf tournament is in a few weeks. It's almost always a neutral affair with wine and cheese after the golf, but I'm wondering how far even the swells can be pushed to accept this outcome gleefully. Perhaps I'll do some button pushing at the tourney to find out.

The US has in many ways had a command economy for a long time, at least in certain industries. One might look at it as a "soft" command since much of it is done by volumes of regulation rather than production quotas or rationing, but it is command nonetheless. This is at the root of much of the dysfunction in the health care sector for instance, with all the rentseeking, monopolization, and oligopsonization, which we would not have but for government intervention, certainly not at the levels that exist today.

In Junior High School in the '50s, we had MANDATORY 'Americanism vs Communism' classes. Then they went away. I've always suspected the teachers had a good deal to do with 'makin' it go "Poof!"'. It surfaced again as a 1-hr non-elective course in the '60s when I was at USL, but the 'teacher' was a long-haired hippy type from CA. The computers really did increase the efficiency of health services so why are things worse now? We through it all away on government regulations. Oh, and giving illegals and the FSA free healthcare magnified the problem further.
Hell the whole reason we have "urgent care" nowadays is so you don't have to wait 8 hours in an ER because there are line of detoxing Aztecs ahead of you.

That's part of it. The other part is that there is a shortage of primary care physicians and running an independent practice as a family doc is damn near impossible since it pays dick, relatively speaking. So they move primary care docs into urgent care or hospital-run groups.

This...in spades. The quality of healthcare has diminished alarmingly in the post-Obamacare years. I am sympathetic with the physicians (I think...) on account of increased case loads, and paperwork. But, the likelihood of actually communicating with a concerned doctor has dropped nearly to zero.
My very good doc of 20+ years took early retirement. The Doogie Houser that replaced him lasted two years, and 'retired' early. The worthless neurologist that Doogie sent me to was, I was informed by letter, 'No longer with the practice'. My PC doc at the VA just kind of disappeared, to be replaced by another for *one* visit, now comes a letter that I have yet *another* PC assigned.
If you have a good doc, treasure them.
