Ironically, in a way that Belgian soldier that was being honored is responsible for the invaders that have destroyed his country.
It is WWI that led to the end of European supremacy and through WWII European sanity. And Belgium was the last point at what a great war could be avoided. If Belgium allowed Germany passage, or just doesn't call Britain, the war ends in a few years with Germany taking a bunch of French colonies and some Russian lands. Prices since 1999 have only roughly doubled. The prices on that old receipt are more likely from, say, 1972. The amount $21.50 from 1972 would be, again roughly, about $166, according to the inflation app on my iPad, which seems more in line with a current day grocery bill.

MREs will taste good for the first year in the army. Then it gets monotonous. Also if you feel like things that can sit on a shelf for ten years EG twinkies are not real food, then you'll be unhappy. Also constipation if you don't drink a ton of water.
The last two weeks in a tiny place near the Pakistani border I had nothing but MREs and pears. When I got to Bagram I had a proper meal at a cafeteria ... they were not serving at the time, but they had a key lime pie in a cold case. I don't like key lime but I enjoyed that one. 60 Ironically, in a way that Belgian soldier that was being honored is responsible for the invaders that have destroyed his country. It is WWI that led to the end of European supremacy and through WWII European sanity. And Belgium was the last point at what a great war could be avoided. I did know this: The Secretary of the Army is considered the direct successor of the Secretary of War. Henry Knox was the first US Secretary of War, having served in a similar named position during the Articles of Confederation. Washington appointed him to the position under the new govt. Originally, this was the head of all military affairs, but in 1798, the Secretary of the Navy was created, making the Navy itself a cabinet level position. So the Sec. of War was about the Army. This was the way it was through WWII up the restructuring in 1947. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at September 05, 2025 11:31 PM (w6EFb) 172

I did some Googling. 75% of SNAP households have at least 1 employed member Another 19% are elderly (who I suppose you could consider "layabouts").
Probably at least some of the remaining 6% are legitimately disabled in some way (blind or whatever). That doesn't really leave a lot of room for the vast army of layabouts that many seem to imagine. Worse, it completely ignores the REAL problem, namely that in the country that produces the most food in the world, food is still somehow so expensive that a significant portion of the population needs government assistance in order to eat. I'm fortunate enough not to need SNAP to eat, but (being an old bastard) I know a lot of people who aren't so lucky. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at September 05, 2025 11:38 PM (qpyNK) 176

My introduction to packaged military meals was via C-rations. I was lucky, as the dread "Ham and Lima Beans" had been phased out by then.
A C-rat meal was packaged in a paper box. All the foodstuff was inside individual metal cans. Preparing your meal involved opening a lot of little cans. My favorite was the "Scrambled Eggs and Ham" meal. The eggs were cooked inside the tin can, which gave them a definite green tinge. I didn't mind the unpleasant color, so I could often trade a can of dry crackers for a can of yummy green eggs and ham. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at September 05, 2025 11:41 PM (UM4Zh) 181

BourbonChicken, nope not at all. Thus the "H". To drop/deliver as food relief for Muslim and other populations (displaced or refugees). Kurdistan in '91 led to this. Kurds of course mostly consumed the MREs, but there were some issues, and for quick response actions it was handy to have around. Lentil stew is a pretty universally acceptable dish.

Worse, it completely ignores the REAL problem, namely that in the country that produces the most food in the world, food is still somehow so expensive that a significant portion of the population needs government assistance in order to eat.
- Inflation happens first where the artificial cashflow is. The groceries are more expensive because government is subsidizing them, the same way homes are overpriced because of the availability of mortgages. ----- what you did was, you take that cardboard box, tear it into pieces. Then you take your main can of spaghetti or whatever, and use the shredded cardboard to fashion a kind of funeral pyre around the can. Front bumper of a deuce n a half is a good place to cook. Make sure you put a hole or two in the can lid with your P38. It's science. Light the cardboard, it burns, your spaghetti is now hot. Posted by: Don Black. Owing to history and geography Bulgaria has a non-trivial Muslim population. I don't know if they slavicize them as they did in the Russian Empire/USSR. Typically just tack an "-ov" or "ev" on the end.

I just read Trump's EO on the War name change. It's basically, just a "nickname" that is to be preferred for "non-statutory" use, although it directs them to propose legislation to make the change official within 60 days. They pried the word "Defense" off the building. They should replace it with an LCD panel that they can program with whatever the word will be this week. Alaska has so much assistance because there is fuck-all to do in the villages. Easy to claim unemployment and just live off the dole, all while hunting moose and caribou or seals and whales or salmon, and eating just fine. Plus we pay their healthcare costs at the Native hospitals, and cover their job training costs at various locations.... etc.
Of course, a half-gallon of milk in the local store is about $12.00. But honestly, most Natives can't metabolize milk anyway. Just like they can't metabolize alcohol, although so many of them try. And they claim they have a vibrant Native culture.... that now includes high-powered rifles and snow machines. Not to mention high-speed internet in bumfuck North Slope. I know, bitch bitch bitch. Posted by: Methos at September 05, 2025 11:50 PM (zLwRl) I'm sure that's true to some degree. However (once again, being an old bastard) I can remember when old people sometimes had to eat cat food to keep from starving, so that's not the entire problem. I'd rather not see those days come back. You all know that I'm no communist (to put it mildly). But... I don't think any American should be hungry unless he's too lazy to chew. Certainly not in a country where the taxpayers (i.e.., those of us fortunate enough to be above the 50% income percentile) pay farmers to NOT grow food.
