Just stopping by to say hello. Our family suffered another loss. We were notified today that our Uncle Robert (Mom's brother) passed away on September 1st. Out of Mom's family other than Grandparents, Great Aunt/Uncle, we were closest to him.

Not a great day, so going to go nurse my headache.

106 MREs will taste good for the first year in the army. Then it gets monotonous. Also if you feel like things that can sit on a shelf for ten years EG twinkies are not real food, then you'll be unhappy. Also constipation if you don't drink a ton of water.

The last two weeks in a tiny place near the Pakistani border I had nothing but MREs and pears. When I got to Bagram I had a proper meal at a cafeteria ... they were not serving at the time, but they had a key lime pie in a cold case. I don't like key lime but I enjoyed that one. I did not eat pears for a while.

Hard pasta was used, originally, as an easy to carry, easy to prepare, military ration. Soft pasta was easier to make, but couldn’t travel. Hard pasta requires a press to make it. Was invented in the Levant, shortly before the rise of the Arabs in the 700s AD.

Lots of soldiers complained about EVERYTHING.
For my part, I liked the newer MREs. They seemed to be made of actual food - not CBD level of food, but at least Chef Boyardee* level. I came to like the mid-90s vegetarian ones a lot. They were less heavy than the regular ones and pretty dang tasty (for a meal that comes out of a plastic bag).

(* Hey! "CBD" could stand for Chef Boyardee's Dildo! I bet CBD would like that one!)

Probably the air filter blocking up. I've seen it happen before, but not quite that severe. The filter clogs up and pressure builds up. Next thing you know you get a nice backfire. Apparently in this guy's case the pressure released down at the ground which probably hit the blades causing it to jump and fall apart.

Our second grandaughter makes noises in her sleep. It has taken me four years to get used to the first one when they spend the night. I have almost trained myself not to leap out of bed to keep her from waking her brother, which she never did to begin with. Now she can walk into our bedroom if she needs me.

I am unsure if they are going to swaddle the newest girl. She breaks out of any blanket swaddle and needs her hands free or gets po'd. I did not say a word when I first saw the straight jacket swaddle of their first.

Their personalities emerge within days of what they prefer. The new one prefers you feed her within seconds, thanks, or she will let you know you messed up. She's a pretty little girl maniac.

I have a mower that bags and mulches. The exit port is at the rear, and the bag goes between the handles. In mulching (non-bagging) mode, you don't install the bag and a spring-loaded cover blocks the exit port and the grass spins around inside and gets chopped up and winds up in little pieces on the ground.

I did know this: The Secretary of the Army is considered the direct successor of the Secretary of War.

Henry Knox was the first US Secretary of War, having served in a similar named position during the Articles of Confederation. Washington appointed him to the position under the new govt.

Originally, this was the head of all military affairs, but in 1798, the Secretary of the Navy was created, making the Navy itself a cabinet level position. So the Sec. of War was about the Army.

This was the way it was through WWII up the restructuring in 1947.

But food in a plastic pouch naturally lends itself to stew-like items, and rice-based items. So it makes sense. Of the conventional MREs my fave was the jambalaya (with the tiny Tabasco bottles). Again - a rice-based stew-like thing that's perfectly fine out of a pouch.

180 My introduction to packaged military meals was via C-rations. I was lucky, as the dread "Ham and Lima Beans" had been phased out by then.

A C-rat meal was packaged in a paper box. All the foodstuff was inside individual metal cans. Preparing your meal involved opening a lot of little cans.

My favorite was the "Scrambled Eggs and Ham" meal. The eggs were cooked inside the tin can, which gave them a definite green tinge. I didn't mind the unpleasant color, so I could often trade a can of dry crackers for a can of yummy green eggs and ham.

what you did was, you take that cardboard box, tear it into pieces. Then you take your main can of spaghetti or whatever, and use the shredded cardboard to fashion a kind of funeral pyre around the can. Front bumper of a deuce n a half is a good place to cook. Make sure you put a hole or two in the can lid with your P38. It's science.
Light the cardboard, it burns, your spaghetti is now hot.

Mostly they get sent to Anchorage to face a court date for whatever drunken malfeasance they did in the village, and then the village won't let them back in, so they end up as public inebriates in Anchorage, passed out just about anywhere.

And many of them are the product of fetal alcohol syndrome, because their moms were the same way. It's a nasty cycle. And yet, there is no detox center at any of the Native hospitals. They think this is whitey's problem to solve.

266 I am *so* looking forward to milder temperatures! Getting tired of salads & sandwiches. I want to cook some comfort foods, but it's been too hot for that.

It's so nice to just put stuff in the oven, and be able to do other things while it cooks! Not enough hours in a day, and baking/roasting meals is helpful for time-saving.

Soon. Very soon. It'll be wonderful...
