Donkey's Day Off Cafe

mountfugifrominternationalspacestation.jpg
Mount Fuji, seen from the International Space Station

Cute: pigeon tries to build a nest for a pregnant cat.

Woman gives her birds a Hawk Warning.

Hare defends her young from a hawk.

Mangroves provide the coast with some shelter from big waves. Plus it's fun to say.

Feral kittycat says hello.

Red pandas are little gentlemen-beggars.

Footage of an "aye-aye" picking its nose. I feel a kinship.

Cory Booker's "bachelor" party.

Fawn runs over to get petted by a human. Cuteness 10, survival instincts -- needs work. See me after class.

Seagulls laugh at their clumsy friend.

Ultimate Driving Skillzzz.

Donkey just wants a hug.

The media is nothing but self-interested propaganda.

Woman adopts one dog, and then goes back to the shelter to adopt her sister, too.

This drone followed an eagle around. Big mistake.

Anyone know what this is? I say that any time I see an animal I can't identify it's "some kind of weasel," and I'm pretty sure this time is no exception. But what kind of weasel, I don't know.

64 For Oldcat.

Pilots aren't just a river thing. They started around east coast harbors in the colonies to guide ships into ports and they still operate today.

The origin of the America's Cup, the oldest international continuous competition in any sport, is the Hundred Guinea Cup off southern England. The US entry was from the New York Club the schooner America. The rich guys who built the yacht hired a lowly harbor pilot from, and this pains me, New Jersey.

In the days of sail harbor pilots would race to be the first to reach an incoming freight ship and win the right to guide them into the harbor. They were ocean sailors.

Richard Brown told the owners to piss off and set the yacht up his way and won the whole thing and that's how it became the America's Cup.

And now you know the rest of the story.

We could always see it every morning, until about noon. Then the clouds rolled in and obscured the summit. The mornings, though, were glorious. I made sure my tent flap opened for the view.

Later on, we got hit by a typhoon. Spent a few soaked days in a pup tent before evacuation. Before that, when it was my turn to go to the food depot to get our meal, the eye passed overhead. Me and this other guy skipped along in the sunshine. By the time we got back, it was pouring again. The whole troop hated us.

132 From Bill Melugin on X:

NEW: The Orange County, CA DA’s office has charged a Costa Mesa woman w/ illegally registering her dog to vote in California and casting mail in ballots in her dog’s name. The dog’s vote was successfully counted in the 2021 recall of Governor Newsom, but was rejected in the 2022 primary.

62-year-old Laura Lee Yourex now faces six felonies.

One felony count of perjury, one felony count of procuring or offering a false or forged document to be filed, two felony counts of casting a ballot when not entitled to vote, and one felony count of registering a non-existent person to vote.

Per OC DA office:

“Proof of residence or identification is not required for citizens to register to vote in California elections nor is it required to cast a ballot in state elections. However, proof of residence and registration is required for first-time voters to vote in a federal election. As a result, the 2022 primary ballot cast in Maya Jean’s name (the dog) was challenged and rejected. The 2021 election to recall California Governor Gavin Newsom was voted down by 61.9% of voters.

The woman also posted photos of her dog on social media with an “I voted” sticker.

186 Mom's interests were not limited to medicine,...
Mom's interest in breast feeding arose when a 1943 train mishap caused my older brother Bill to go without his formula for twenty-four hours (described in Chapter 2). She swore she would nurse all the rest of her children, and she did! Her subsequent medical investigations of the benefits of nursing (coupled with her considerable common sense) led to her series of lectures on breastfeeding, ...

She was shocked that a medical journal suggested using a "stiff bristle brush" ...she declared, swearing that she'd put together a rational piece. Therefore, she compiled her knowledge on breastfeeding in a series of "Letters to Judy,"
"My vines have tender grapes!"

Although I bought several books on nursing while I was pregnant, this manuscript had many tips that I wasn't able to find elsewhere, including the fact that the milk becomes richer as a
nursing session progresses, and that "schedule" feeding can actually damage the breast.

So this book is a compendium of over forty years of breastfeeding experience,...

That affected several of the Founders, including Ben Franklin.

Because they adjusted the start of the year to Jan 1 from the "Old Style" Lady Day, Mar. 25, that changed the year of birth for those born from Jan 1 to Mar. 25.

Whether you bothered to change your birthdate to proleptic Gregorian or just used the old Julian date was largely personal preference, IIRC.

My folks farm in Vermont was heated mostly by wood. And in Vermont in the winter that meant a lot of wood.

Among other Freddy Krueger tools he had has was a PTO driven log saw. Hard to describe what a crazy thing this was but it was basically an open blade that was about a yard wide with teeth the size of a Great White that could cut large trees into logs for splitting. You put a large tree trunk on the table part of this freaky thing and pushed toward the blade. Hand clear because it was going to cut anything in its path.

It was pretty cool.

Pro climate-change cult, pro-NASA funding, anti-RFK,Jr's work, really full-blown TDS stuff. I was so disappointed. She says listen to scientists instead of politicians, oblivious to the reality of the politicization of NASA, CDC, and on and on.

279 I thought to reply, but, a) YouTube (already 800+ comments), b) parsing every point would take an hour at least, and c) lib-deranged folks never listen and the cultists might come a-canceling me for arguing.

Going to be hard to be amused at her skits after this.

If her channel is managed at all, your comment would likely get nuked within seconds.

280 Those cave divers that rescued the Thai kids years ago really had to have nerves of steel. There was some tight passages they had to maneuver through, under water.

285 Spelunkery, y'say?

I'm not terribly claustrophobic, but I've been through some tight passages in my late brother's cave in Missouri that were a tad worrisome. Mostly, I had to keep telling myself that if I could go through one way, I could go back, and the odds of the rock shifting and blocking my way out, while not zero, were very low.

Bro told me how he and two friends were climbing through areas I never went (nor would go). He and one friend climbed up through a tight hole into an open room. The other friend got stuck. They looked down at the floor and there was his face, turning red. Blocking the only way out. IIRC, he managed to wriggle through after removing his wallet.

Yike.

A fellow around here back in the early '60s had his nuts ripped off by a tractor PTO shaft.

He stepped over the shaft (unshielded) and it caught his pants.

290 @Accomack, that is the impression I got as well. My boss would see him at a job-site and start pretending to talk to his trowel, phone, etc., to mimic Fidrych's routine, and Mark would always just flip him off with a smile.

Posted by: Lincolntf at September 05, 2025 09:48 PM (vV6n9)

291 >>I got the impression that Fidrych didn't want to be bothered with baseball.

I got the exact opposite impression.

He was completely dialed in when he pitched. It just didn't define him.

I got into caving disasters on YouTube for some reason and I had no idea that what people call "caves" are actually wormholes that require wriggling, crawling, and twisting. Yeah, I won't do it. The story of John Jones in the Nutty Putty cave is the worst.

293 @Jack Straw, in the early 2000's, Fidrych hated talking baseball. We were cool about it, but it was definitely known.

294 The golf course next to my neighborhood just had a very nice fireworks show. No idea what it was for but it was a pleasant surprise. They always have one on the fourth too. It's nice because I just stand in the street in front of my house for a great view!

295 I am unsure if this is off topic, but our 4yr old granddaughter informed me after school today that she no longer picks her nose. I said this is very good, less germs. We then demonstrated scratching our noses with our wrists.

After watching her 3wk old sister for only two feedings and diapers (5hrs), I fell asleep at 7pm watching a loud war movie.I won't be able to fall asleep like this when I am supposed to in bed.

Their older brother also made a brief appearance but did not say or do anything profound.

That's exactly what I mean.

When he did pitch he was one of the most expressive MLB pitchers ever. That was just talent it was love.

But it wasn't all he was.

I was there too. And I played.

301 I get it @Jack Straw. I played a bit myself. Mark did not seem unhappy when I knew him. That is all I was trying to convey. He was a funny guy. Caught for him once behind Manoog Plumbing in Worcester. Even as an industrial plumber in his 40's, he blew my doors off.

303 Evening all,

Just stopping by to say hello. Our family suffered another loss. We were notified today that our Uncle Robert (Mom's brother) passed away on September 1st. Out of Mom's family other than Grandparents, Great Aunt/Uncle, we were closest to him.

Not a great day, so going to go nurse my headache.

Great ONT tonight.

Goodnight.

305 Ace - for a future cafe. Dad scrambles for a foul ball at a Phillies Marlins game on Friday night. He retrieves it and gives it to his son. Both are in Phillies gear.. He is immediately confronted by a heinous Karen who jumps right in his face and demands he give the ball to her. She nearly (deservedly)gets punched out but he finally takes the ball from his son and gives it to her. She stalks off, full of self righteous indignation.

Incidentally, the Marlins staff came over and gave the son some Phillies gear afterwards.

This has to be viral.
