Reports: Paramount -- the New Owner of CBS -- Is Close to Buying Bari Weiss' Free Press for As Much as $200 Million, and Giving Weiss a Supervisory Position Over CBS "News" Itself

Dylan Byers reports that the deal, while not yet signed, is on "the 1-yard line."

For those who don't know sportsball, that means that the deal is just 36 inches away from shooting a three-pointer home run.

Paramount is preparing to shell out as much as $200 million for Bari Weiss' buzzy media venture, The Free Press -- and hand her the keys to help steer CBS News -- in a move that's rattling an already shaken news division still reeling from the $8 billion Skydance-Paramount mega-merger.
Weiss, the former New York Times opinion page editor who launched The Free Press in 2022, is reportedly in line for a senior editorial role at CBS News as part of a deal that would fold her outlet into the new Paramount, according to the Puck newsletter.
Paramount declined to comment, but Puck media reporter Dylan Byers pegged the potential purchase price between $100 million and $200 million, with sources saying the talks are in their final stages.

The FCC signed off on the transaction after Ellison agreed to sweeping changes at CBS News, including installing an ombudsman to police bias, dismantling DEI programs and promising to elevate "viewpoint diversity."
Those concessions have already rattled the newsroom. One CBS insider told Fox Business that the new ombudsman amounted to a "hall monitor," while former anchors have publicly warned that CBS News' tradition of independent reporting could be in jeopardy.
Now the prospect of Weiss -- a sharp-tongued critic of progressive orthodoxy who quit the Times after blasting the paper's "illiberal environment" -- stepping into a leadership role has only heightened tensions, according to reports.

Bari Weiss is a liberal, but a liberal who dissents from the AWFL Karen Liberal Establishment "consensus." This would be a win for free speech and conservatives, even though it's really yet another media liberal who's profiting.

They'll never let a genuine conservative have any major role in a media outlet, because they're disgusting bigots who deserve what's coming to them.

But this would still advance the cause of conservatism and of free speech.

The boomerang effect -- the NYT fires Weiss, she starts an independent media outlet that soon is worth $100-200 million and becomes a major editorial decision-maker at one of the main outlets of progressive propaganda -- will be an object lesson for the left.

But then, they've shown that they just can't learn, so the object lesson will mean little to them.

Until the next major humiliation and reduction in status that's inflicted on them.

Related: CBS "News" scaremongers over the new rule that those receiving public benefits must, if able-bodied, at least try to pretend to find work.

From the outset, the biggest change to SNAP eligibility comes from people remaining under the work requirement for an additional 10 years- same as you and me. And, in all fairness, the work requirement doesn't mean actual work. It also encompasses looking for work, or studying in lieu of work. But this is presented as a cut to everyone.
That able-bodied individuals not of retirement age should remain in the job market before applying for food stamps is not extraordinary in and of itself, but is presented by CBS as the most draconian thing. How dare people be on the welfare rolls and be made to look for work?

In general real estate developers are intimately involved in local politics and gather as much subsidies and favors to make their money by buying land cheap and then developing it. Some are ethical as apparently PDT was as he has been anally probed. Most are not and the local pols have an incestuous relationship with these types where donations flow to teh pols and favor flow from the pols to bend the rules to get er done.

That is why libertarians calling for ending zoning laws, no restrictions on building, etc. are unlikely to ever get much traction. Until you fix that system ,people are naturally resistant to the enshittification to the benefit of developers and politicians of where they live--including liberals.

You cannot cram in more housing than zoned and put off the economic costs on your neighbors in terms of traffic, schools, etc. Developers almost always privatize the gains and socialize losses.

It's an acquihire. There are about 40 investors in the company, with none holding more than 3%. Bari will get paid, but there are others that will probably get more - like David Sacks and Marc Andreessen. They raised $15 million at a $100 million valuation a year ago. At the time, they had about $16 million in revenue.

Now, they are going to bring David Rhodes in to run CBS News (which kicks Cibrowski in the nuts), and Rhodes, who is friends with Weiss is lobbying for her acquisition as part of his own conditions.

And, the best part. It's not going to improve their ratings. It's just going to piss off the employees even more.

I didn't know libertarians did that. A few used to accuse me of a straw man when I implied that their principle should be against the "taking" of the use of land in zoning restrictions.

But if they do, it's why you shouldn't let your ideology do too much of your thinking.

Part of the value of your property is the environment in which it is located. Yeah, the gang-bangers who shot holes in your house gunning down some member of another gang who just so happened to be walking in front of your house "did something wrong" to your house--but that's among the other things that they did when they were disregarding laws.

It could be that none were on your property when they detracted from the home's value. Zoning laws are sane--they *can* be overbearing sometimes, but that's not for the community process of decision-making, not "property vigilantes".

Welp, it's been a long time between the release of "Pi" and now but Darren Aronofsky finally made another movie I really like-

"Caught Stealing".

The story concerns a one-time promising baseball player who career ended due to a car accident. He's now a functional alcoholic bartender in NYC. His next door neighbor leaves the country and ask the ballplayer to watch his cat for him.
And suddenly the BB player finds himself knee deep in a violent conflict between gangs.

The trailer makes it look like a Tarantino knock-off but it's really not...or rather imagine a Tarantino movie with all the snark and smartaleckness squeezed out of it.

Great acting, great directing, violence very well used- it has consequences and hurts, nice script.

I'm unfamiliar with the star but he's very good in this role. Probably, the new Brad Pitt.

Check it out. Well worth your time.

You left out the other news, HUD is looking at returning to TANFF provision long waived where able bodied types get a maximum of two years subsidized housing assistance instead of the ever increasing 16.7 year average now on the public teat due to waivers. Like public housing in general, Section 8 has morphed again into multi generational handouts for layabouts instead of who needs it. Not sustainable as welfare in different programs now compose about a billion or so of the total budget growing far faster than inflation. I am excluding Social Security and Medicare as welfare as at least recipients pay some of that freight which is not true of Medicaid (token payments often waived) or Section 8/public housing/foodstamps.

I think of it as a win. An overtly conservative news network will be relegated to a ghetto that nobody other than other conservatives will watch. If FOX has, say 2mm prime-time viewers, another non-leftist network with 2mm viewers is a win. If libs of good faith (yeah, I know) watch CBS, and it becomes the gateway drug to other news, it's a win.

My unofficial, nonmoral take on trannies like White is that they have gone to such effort that they've earned reasonable accommodation (understood in a very minimalist way). But they're still not women. Everyone used to understand that chicks with dicks are not really chicks. And I'd wager White has had more elective surgery and HRT than the average dude in a dress can afford, and also benefits from a naturally nonmasculine body type/frame. In other word, only a tiny fraction of dolls with balls can hope to do what White has done successfully. Most are just wasting their time and resemble dock workers.
